Meandering through a Los Angeles neighborhood, a curbside and contemporary home caught my architectural eagle-eyes! Beyond the home’s fashionable display of clean, crisp and couture lines, the intersecting cantilevered roofs celebrated a connection of spaces—at least what we could see from the front exterior elevation. This one deserved a knock at the door of its innovator, Jeff Soler of Soler Architecture. Jan Horn: Your residential portfolio is a stunning display of unique homes, inside and out. To what do you attribute such diversity? Jeff Soler: I never want to become a slave to one particular style, and we are always looking to expand our work in different directions. We strive to bring a well-studied integrity to our projects that is respectful of the style, without losing a sense of eccentricity and playfulness that can make a house feel like a home. JH: The interior finishes and furnishings, from project to project, are of particular interest. What is your level of involvement in bringing it all together? JS: I really enjoy looking at the project in its entirety, from finish surfaces to hardscape and landscape design. I think that is where we sort of cross over the current divide between architects and interior designers. We assist in selecting the plumbing fixtures, appliances and lighting fixtures. We definitely have an opinion on things. JH: The Riggs Place Residence in Los Angeles is of particular interest. Would you share your strategy or process of design decisions that were involved during design and construction? JS: The clients were terrific. They wanted the house to embrace the pool and blur the boundary between the interior and exterior. Once we had the basic plan strategy in place, we were really able to focus on the more sculptural aspects of the form. I love the anthracite metal cladding combined with the rough limestone. JH: Can you give examples of key design elements you incorporate in your designs? JS: I am a sucker for a freestanding tub in a master bathroom, but more generally speaking, we let each individual project define its own key design element. We like to leave room for the clients’ furnishings and objects to express themselves within the space. I never want the house to feel too over-designed, to the point that it becomes rigid.
