When we see a piece of architecture, we often define it or speak about it purely from the context of its exterior visual presence, praising the style, shape, height, color or usage of materials in an interesting way. Yet what of a building’s inside? The ideals of “Beauty is on the inside” or “It’s what’s inside that counts,” are a part our refreshing tandem conversation with partners in life and design, Jeff Allsbrook and Silvia Kuhle. Join in on our interview as Jeff and Silvia shed a little “natural” light perspective on their philosophical and real approach to architecture, from the inside out. Jan Horn: Reviewing your portfolio of residential design, there is a delicate aroma toward contemporary with notes of mid-century warmth and openness. Are we heading in the right direction? Silvia Kuhle & Jeff Allsbrook: We’ve lived in the Silverlake area for 20 years and are surrounded by the Neutras, Lautners and Schindlers in the neighborhood, making it easy to understand the influence that the Southern California climate has had in this style of architecture that isn’t possible in other places in the United States. Where we differ from that is, we’re not looking at a post-and-beam aesthetic for the articulation of the architecture; instead, we have more of a contemporary approach than a mid-century one. We are not trying to recreate the past, but borrow from it. JH: You both have an internationally based background in education and architecture. How has that global experience influenced or shaped your branded style of architecture? SK & JA: We believe it does in several ways. Stylistic influences from Europe differ from those we see here in Los Angeles. European style is less formal with more attention to materials and details, versus L.A. style with a formal expression around form. Our experience with architects in London and Portugal has an emphasis on how materials come together and the quality of materials and life. The creation of spaces that are meaningful, where a dialogue exists among proportion, the architectural space and occupant. Spaces experienced for the living in them as opposed to just looking at them. JH: Can you share what it means to design a home from the inside out? SK & JA: Understand first how the client aspires to live within a space. Then, you work with the spaces and the relationship to the spaces from the inside, versus coming to the client with an idea about how a house should look.
