Before you leave the hospital with your newborn, you should know that all parents are required to transport their baby home in a New York State, Regulation Approved Car Seat.

The car seat must always be placed in the back seat on the passenger side facing the rear window, not front. (See diagram) For more information on Car Seats and to have yours installed for free by a certified inspector, visit the NYC website at http://www.nyc.gov

THE JOYS & BENEFITS OF BREASTFEEDING 

\Breastfeeding is normal and

healthy for infants and moms. 









Breast milk has disease-fighting cells called antibodies that help protect infants from germs, illness, and even SIDS. Infant formula cannot match the exact chemical makeup of human milk, especially the cells, hormones, and antibodies that fight disease.

For most babies, breast milk is easier to digest than formula. It takes time for their stomachs to adjust to digesting the proteins in formula because they are made from cow's milk.

Premature babies do better when breastfed compared to premature babies who are fed formula.

When you breastfeed, there are no bottles and nipples to sterilize. Unlike human milk straight from the breast, infant formula has a chance of being contaminated.

Breastfeeding makes your life easier. You do not have to purchase, measure, and mix formula. There are no bottles to warm in the middle of the night!

IMPORTANT DISCHARGE INFORMATION There are several important things to remember to secure a timely discharge from Coney Island Hospital.

1- Please keep in mind that discharges from the hospital must take place before 12:00 noon. Please make arrangements for transportation prior to your discharge. (See back panel for infant car seat information.)

2- Remember to have a full outfit for the baby to go home in.

3- If your physician has prescribed medication, feel free to utilize the hospital’s pharmacy or a pharmacy of your choice.

Remember to ask the RN to explain your medication and its side effects.

4- Remember to keep your scheduled clinic appointment for yourself and your baby.

SAFE HAVEN LAW If after leaving the hospital with your baby you find yourself overwhelmed and believe that you cannot take care of your baby, you may take your baby to what is known as a “Safe Haven” location. These locations are:  Any Hospital  Any Church, Synagogue or Mosque  Police Station  Fire Station No questions asked nor will there be any charges filed against you.
