This article is important to me beacuse it is the first article I had published. It was written over the summer of 2012 at the MIPA summer workshop and edited it to relate back to my school for publishing on our first day issue. I often look back to this piece to compare myself as a writer now to three years ago; I can see that I have become more mature, compelling and narrative, which can be seen especially compared to my column on rape, which can be read later in my portfolio.

My first year on staff, I was a “freelance� writer for the newspaper due to scheduling conflicts, so all of the work was done on my own time.

This article exemplifies the early stages of my ability to illustrate people within a short story, as well as interview many sources and put the information I am given together in a well-writen piece.

This article was the result of a lack of entertainment material the day before publication. In between the time I got home from school and the time I went to bed, I had the interview done, the story written, edited and ready to be placed on the page.

The subject of the piece also lived 200 miles away at the time, so all interviews had to be done over Facebook messages.
