Project/Design Brief For my design brief I will be looking at the designer Phoebe English, researching about how she designs and creates her work and, whether or not she’s a sustainable designer. After the reasearch i will look into creating prints for a ready to wear design range, that corresponds with Phoebe English’s designs for her online store that showcases her latest works. At the end of this project I am to have better knowledge, on sustainable fashion, about the designer and how they work, but also marketing and a better understanding for illustator and photoshop

PHOEBE ENGLISH

PHOEBE ENGLISH

PHOEBE ENGLISH

Phoebe English is a British fashion designer, who understands that fashion is one of the largest causes of pollution in the world. As a brand they’re aware of the impact they have, and she tries to keep a low carbon foot-print, which is great to see a brand with transparency, as you don’t regularly see fashion brands do this. Phoebe English and her team work from their, studio in south london where everything is made to order, reducing the need to mass make a garment.

The brand mainly uses neutral colours, meaning that if you were to buy a garment, you’re more likely to wear as it goes with almost anything. Occasionally they will add in a pop of colour, like blues or oranges however are on the more dull side so that, they can be worn with anything thanks it looking more toned down. You might also see on their “Instagram” that, they might used things like lace or safe prints like stripes.

when it comes to Phoebe Englishs USP(unique selling point), is that alot of her designs are gender nuetral, meaning both male and female can wear them. packing like hangers are send back to the london studio to be reused for other delveries. Everything is made to order no mass production.

fabric is locally sorced within uk and eu and any fabric trimming or cut outs are reused for new garments or fashion range/lines.

They offer to re-purpose or fix garments to keep the longevity of any garment someone has bought from Phoebe English. As they believe that a “good design should last forever” and they see is as if that garment can’t worn for a long time it’s not successful if the customer can’t wear it for year to come.

Over all I’d say the brands identity is about being conscious about fashion and, how we should be more sustainable as consumer. Buying clothes that will last for a long time, and not buying fast fashion where clothes will only last a couple weeks, then get thrown away by us to buy the same thing again and repeat the process. To not buy thing in Quantity but Quality.

Product Brand Analysis Most of the brands products range from the cheapest, being £45 which are face mask and a jewellery pouch, with the most expensive item being a coat for £550 however, most stuff sold by Phoebe English ranges from £150 to £400 at most. With the brand you’ll see that all garments are made sustainably, although it says reclaimed it means they’ve reused the fabric from their manufacters fabric cut outs. they claim they use this as a part of their practice for new garment line however, it maybe a mixture of the used fabric and new fabric which is why they may label it as reclaimed cotton or silk. once they’ve sold a garment on there online store, they often reuse their plastic hanger for the items deliveries, and they don’t use any plastic packaging execpt the hanger all garments are sent of in recycleable and biodergradble packaging, that is FSC certified (forest stewardship council). Also offering their customer how to properly care for the garment in a safe environmently freindly way.

“SKT 403 QUILTED PUFF SKIRT” £370

Made From 70% reclaimed silk 30% reclaimed wool 100% relcaimed Oeko Tex Bamboo Viscose

The style of Phoebe English’s brand almost reminds me of a Japanese street trend called mode, that was inspired by fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto. It’s very minimalistic in terms of colour however, is semi maximalist when it comes to the styling of the garment, when you see models in the clothes. And it seems like everything it supposed to be not fitting so that it doesn’t emphasis on the figure, making the garment look comfortable to wear which, I generally prefer. However the clothes designed by Phoebe English look more formal so you look put together but comfortable.

TMG/CUSTOMER PROFILE BOARD For the Phoebe English’s TMG/Customer Profile I’d describe them to be, a business woman or is a modern working girl who interest in the art or fashion. They’re aged around 25-60 plus as the models that are photographed in the garments look to be around this age range, along side the brands style being quite classy and modern. They try to lead a healthy and eco-conscious lifestyle, living in a modern home or flat outside the city, spending their time gardening or cite seeing. Because they try to lead a good life they drive an electric car, as they’re seen to be environmentally friendly. But when they to go shopping for clothes or anything they buy second hand or repursosed garment or buy from small business as they are trying to be fashion conscious.

PHOEBE ENGLISH SUSTAINABILITY REPORT/BOARD

Sustainable 500-word report (Phoebe English) Phoebe English is British fashion designer who’s eco conscious and her work revolves around lowering her brands carbon footprint as low as possible and, being sustainable as much as you can be in the fashion industry. Most of the information about the brand sustainability is shown on Phoebe English’s website, on the about page split into section going into detail how they’re trying to be sustainable. English realises that she has impact in the fashion industry and how it’s the second biggest contributor to pollution, and that it starts with the production of garments making sure to take responsible from the start till the end product. According to the website her and her team, “We use British fabric or British finished fabrics wherever possible; the sourcing is kept close to the UK or EU to reduce the overall carbon footprint of importing far distances. We reuse our ‘waste’ which is returned to us from our manufacturers as off-cuts and put them back into the next collection”. You can see this when looking of what each garment is made from using the word “reclaimed” to show that they’re reusing the waste materials from their manufactures, however we don’t know how much is actually reused, however they do reuse their dead or surplus stock or clothing line for a new range which is great to see meaning, each new/old design sold on the website is a limited piece. When is comes to fabric and packaging they make sure they’re eco-friendly using “GOTs certified organic cottons” and “oeko-Tex certified bamboo silks”, which is nice to see a brand research fabric they use and if it a better alternative. But you’ll find that the word biodegradable is mentioned quite a bit, that brings up a slight concern as many things can be labelled as biodegradable, but it could only be the packaging on not the actual product, “To avoid plastic, we use a variety of biodegradable natural finishings such as buttons made from palm nuts and milk protein.”. when it comes to the brand, they actually mean it as palm nut (Corozo) and milk proteins (Codelite) are well known to be biodegradable buttons are made sustainably. As for packaging and selling products, all garments are made to order as once someone purchase from the Phoebe English website the order is made in their London studio, that has pickup availability as well as delivery. When they do have to get the products delivered all packaging is recyclable, listing the companies that are FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified, buying the packaging from “Ombu London, Eco-Craft and Greenstat”, these are the companies they list who they buy their sustainable and biodegradable packaging from “compostable packaging, consisting of recycled tissue paper, secured with paper washi sticky tape, inside a protective glassine paper bag from FSC certified”. Not to mention they also reuse their hanger returned from customer deliveries or old garments, and is the only plastic used within their packaging. It’s great to see that everything is many plastics free which is rare to see, as many brands high- and low-end use plastic for deliveries. In conclusion I like Phoebe English takes everything into consideration and is a transparent designer, on how her brand is trying to be sustainable and the practices they use making sure they’ve done their research and updating practices to be sustainable, in an industry where it almost impossible.
