Reconnect with nature in the four-season wonderland of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Explore this great American wilderness with its shimmering waterfalls, long-range views, and lush green forests. With four entrances to the Park near Bryson City, visitors have easy access to backpacking, hiking, camping, viewing historical structures, fishing, tubing, and other outdoor adventures. The highest peak in the Park — Kuwohi (Formerly Clingmans Dome) — offers spectacular 360° views of the Smokies and beyond.
Located at the Cherokee, NC, visitor center entrance to the Park, features include a pioneer village, riverside trail, and historic artifacts. It is very common to be able to view the elk in the fields during the dawn and dusk hours. The historic Mingus Mill is just 1⁄2 mile further north by car.
A unique part of local history, the Road to Nowhere is a six-mile scenic drive or strenuous bike ride into the Park that dead ends at a tunnel for hiking. This is a popular area for hiking and exploration, including the 33.5-mile Lakeshore Trail. From Bryson City, take Everett Street/ Fontana Road three miles north to Lakeview Drive.
Just five minutes north of downtown Bryson City, Deep Creek is a popular area for tubing, hiking, biking, waterfalls, and fishing, with numerous tube rental outfitters at the Park entrance. It also includes a section along the creek with tables and grills for picnics.
Forney Creek, Eagle Creek and Hazel Creek are three isolated north shore areas accessible only by boat or foot. These remote creeks are wildly popular fishing destinations and are also popular among backcountry hikers and campers. Local outfitters and guides can assist you in accessing this area.
Along with outdoor adventure, natural beauty and a quaint downtown, Bryson City offers numerous unique experiences. As part of your visit, we encourage you to be bold and try something different. We are especially excited about our Farmers and Artisans Market that runs every Friday from May to October. Enjoy authentic artisans and crafters, as well as local fresh produce, eggs, and breads.

The Nantahala National Forest is one of Bryson City’s most coveted public lands for outdoor adventure. Visitors can explore the wide open spaces of this lush forest including hiking, whitewater rafting, zip lining, biking trails, fishing, and water sports. The forest is also home to two long distance trails – the Appalachian and Bartram Trails, as well as the Nantahala River Gorge and the Fingerlake Day Use Area. All hiking trails in the Nantahala National Forest are pet-friendly.
Fontana Lake has been called the best-kept secret in the North Carolina Mountains. The 29-mile long, 11,700-acre lake has more than 240 miles of shoreline, and more than 90% of the land around the lake is bordered by the Great Smoky Mountains National Park or the US Forest Service. This abundance of public land and unspoiled wilderness ensures pristine lake and mountain views for generations to come.
There are plenty of access points to explore Fontana Lake. Several public boat ramps are available for launching your own boat, paddleboard, or kayak, or you can reach out to a local outfitter and rent the equipment. For a full-service experience, visitors can utilize one of our knowledgeable guides who will arrange the
entire trip for you including sunset cruises, fishing trips, camping trips and access to historic areas of the park like Hazel Creek and Eagle Creek, as well as the option to rent a pontoon boat from one of our local marinas. The Fingerlake Day Use Area is open during the summer months and includes a small park with picnic tables, public restrooms and a primitive swimming area.
At 480 feet, the Fontana Dam impounds Fontana Lake and produces hydroelectric power. This engineering marvel has historical significance to the residents of Swain County. In response to an urgent need for electric power during World War II; many residents gave up their private land to the Federal Government for the creation of Fontana Lake and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Appalachian Trail crosses Fontana Dam, where visitors can walk or drive across the dam or stop by the visitor center from May through October.
The Gorge is the epicenter of outdoor adventure in Swain County. Here, people of all ages can enjoy whitewater rafting and kayaking, zip lining, fishing, biking, jeep tours, horseback riding, hiking and gem mining. The 200,000 paddlers who come every year make the Nantahala River one of the most popular whitewater rafting rivers in the Southeast. With mostly Class I and II rapids, it is a great place for family fun; rafters as young as 6 years of age (or 60 pounds) can raft on the Nantahala River. A drive on US-19 through the Gorge is worthwhile for scenic views, restaurants, picnic areas, and pull-offs to watch the rafters on the rushing waters.
The Nantahala River is also a popular fishing spot, especially when it comes to fly fishing. Trout Unlimited named the river one of 100 Best Trout Streams in America. The Upper Nantahala is stocked and designated as a delayed harvest trout stream. Although the Lower Nantahala is supported by a delayed harvest stream, it’s not designated as delayed harvest, meaning folks do not need to follow delayed harvest fishing rules when fishing the Lower Nantahala and can use whatever lures or baits one likes.
Hiking in the Nantahala Gorge and surrounding Nantahala National Forest offers terrific trails and varied challenge levels. The best part? All trails welcome dogs, unlike in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park where pets are not allowed, so bring along your furry companion! Favorite insider hiking trails include:
• Appalachian Trail
• Bartram Trail
• Findley Falls
• Flint Ridge Trail
• Nantahala Bikeway
• Wesser Creek Trail
• Wesser Bald Fire Tower

Deep Creek, just outside of Bryson City and the Oconaluftee River in Cherokee are two of the purest rivers in the Smoky Mountains where you can enjoy a tube ride that’s part rushing rapids, and part lazy ripples and swimming holes.
Tubing companies generally operate from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day; however, Deep Creek tubing can begin earlier in May and continue after Labor Day if the weather is warm. Tube rental companies are located on West Deep Creek Road near the park entrance.
