Deep Creek Just five minutes from downtown Bryson City, Deep Creek is one of the park’s most family friendly and accessible destinations. Its wide, well maintained trail is easy for small children and moms with strollers to manage, and parking is conveniently located at both the trail-head and the picnic area. Waterfalls/Hiking: Enjoy three beautiful cascades as you hike alongside the creek. Continue along the trail to access numerous back country trails with one even reaching Clingmans Dome. Tubing: Floating down the cool and pristine waters of Deep Creek is one of the most popular – and affordable – family activities in the Smokies. Fishing: With its native brown, rainbow, and brook trout, Deep Creek is one of the best cold water trout streams to be found in the Great Smokies. Picnic Area: Open year round with plenty of tables and grills, restrooms, and changing areas. Also available for rental through the GSMNP is a large pavilion which is perfect for weddings and family reunions.

This 35 mile drive from Cherokee, NC to Gatlinburg, TN offers numerous pull-offs and scenic overlooks. 14

Nantahala Gorge US 19 through the National Gorge is a beautiful drive that follows the river and offers multiple pull-offs and picnic spots as well as river access. At the western end of the Nantahala Gorge, turn onto Wayah Road and follow the river up Nantahala Mountain. You’ll find some truly spectacular cascades on the way to Nantahala Lake; the second highest lake east of the Mississippi.
Blue Ridge Parkway
The nation’s most popular scenic highway begins only 20 minutes from Bryson City in Cherokee, at the entrance to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Cherohala Skyway
This spectacular 51 mile stretch of road connects Hwy 143 in Robbinsville, NC to Tellico Plains, TN, traveling through the Cherokee and Nantahala National Forests.
Waterfall Loop Enjoy a day of waterfall viewing as you travel from Bryson City and the Deep Creek area to Cherokee, Franklin, and Highlands. Many are accessible from the road while several will require an easy to moderate walk to view. Several outfitters offer expert instruction for all skill levels. And two venues provide the opportunity for mastering whitewater kayaking skills. One is the Class III ‘Nantahala Falls’ at the end of the 8-mile rafting course. The other is a ‘Championship Wave’ feature, created for the 2013 ICF Freestyle World Championships. Further downstream, past the mouth of the Nantahala, the placid waters of Fontana Lake are ideal for flatwater kayaking.

Fontana Dam Celebrating 75 Years in 2020
Fontana Dam was built in the early 1940’s to serve the growing electricity demands of the region at the height of World War II. At 480 feet high, Fontana is the tallest dam in the Eastern United States, and at the time of its construction, it was the fourth tallest dam in the world. The dam impounds the 29 mile long Fontana Lake, with over 240 miles of shoreline; development has been kept to a minimum as over 90% of the land around the lake is owned by the National Park Service or US Forest Service. Boaters can enjoy the pristine water and unrivaled views including Clingmans Dome, the Park’s highest peak, as well as sightings of the bald eagles who nest along the lake. Visitors can walk, bike or drive across the top and enjoy great views of the lake above the dam and the river below. The visitor center is open daily April - October, and the observation deck is open all year. The lake’s deep, cold waters provide the ideal habitat for a variety of fish. In fact, record size muskie and walleye have been pulled from its depths. And many believe it’s one of the best small mouth bass fishing lakes in the country, including the Fisherman’s Bass Tournament Circuit, which has held a Hall of Fame Classic at Fontana every spring.
