THE EFFECTS OF REFLECTIVE SURFACE APPLIED TO A BAKERY

REFLECTIONS

2021 - 2022 FRANCESCA LEVENTIS

Mirror has properties that are unique to reflective surface, the ability to expand and create by reflecting the space around it. The initial studies of the project began by experimenting with t the placement of mirrorsin relation to their surroundings to achieve certain effects. The studies were categorized by what interior relationships between body, site, and container the mirrors were manipulating and the effect is had on how the body experienced that interior.

PROSTHETIC STUDIES

After the initial experimentation of arranging mirrors and studying the effects of the reflections, mirrors in the form of prosthetic were studied. Manipulation of one’s own perception using mirror to distort how a body interacts and functions within an interior. An example would be the periscope allowing one to look beyond, to extend our vision. These prosthetics helped transition to using mirror as a tool and not just an illusion.

FILM STUDY

Creating a narrative based on everyday behaviors that occur in specific parts of the interior. The film uses the mirrors to pinpoint these moments of action, these moments where bodies activate space, these moments where the holistic interior is being affected. The story is told by highlighting key moments when the body engages with another interior element to complete an action ocurring within that space. This idea of curating a process and using mirrors to highlight specific moments of daily behaviors fueled that idea to curate the baking process.

Scene Various locations around the bakery. Time Present.

How does mirror manipulate the process to engage the users with the space? Bakery – play Performers – workers Customers – audience Moments that become stage Mirrors – spotlights (being used to expose the backstage) Open to production Giving audience the holistic performance that includes not only the retail moments that are the “final production”. It exposes the labor behind the product to showcase the process in a way that engages the customers, but also becomes functional for the workers.

BAKERY Separating out by function, schedule of process was essential. The floor plan was set up to enhance the zoning catering to the workers and considering the proximity of equipment needed at each stage of the process. The spaces were then categorized as more active spaces or more still zones. Active areas and still areas were treated in two different ways depending on what mirror property was assigned to its function. The active spaces received treatments allowing for observation and showcase process from a new perspective, occurring above the worksurfaces. The rest areas were treated by using mirror to multiply and create an illusion as customers look beyond into the rest of the process.
