PROJECT INSPIRATION Having worked in the exhibition/experiential field for two co-ops, I noticed that what happens post-exhibit was never discussed in the design phase. For this reason, I wanted to explore the options available to designers and how this could determine an exhibition.
2
PROJECT STATEMENT Exhibitions can change in the blink of an eye; as soon as one is complete the design for its replacement begins. Each exhibition is as unique as the space it inhabits which makes it difficult to reuse materials for the next exhibit. This project explores how an exhibition can maintain its creativity while having a smaller ecological footprint.
3
To start my research I looked at ways the exhibition and entertainment fields have been trying to ‘go green’ and lessen their footprint. The typical way the entertainment business would create all the different sets, both stage and film, is by recycling sets. Many are easy to reuse, whether freshening up with paint or just changing the staging. However, when looking at the current exhibit discipline, the obvious is being done; design for reuse, use recycled materials, recycle materials when finished. In order to develop a new way to design an exhibit, I looked at various wall systems, as well as wall organization (right). From this, I decided to create a wall system that combines both movement in its space and movement of object on the wall.

When selecting a site, I was looking for a space large enough to house an experiential environment. This location is approximately 24,000 sq ft and is surrounded by more than enough parking for visitors. The site is also three blocks from Fountain Square, which is an ideal walking distance for those site-seeing. This building is also not occupied, so is a clean slate for whatever moves in.

The design of the building is intentionally left rather empty due to the eventual presence of a flexible wall system. The aspects of the permanent structure includes two points of vertical movement from each level. In order to create different views into other areas of the building, the presence of ‘landmarks’ allow for a unique look through out the exhibits that eventually inhabit the building.

This wall system is designed to be versatile, which is why it includes multiple types of walls. Wall A allows for variations in displaying and attaching things to the wall. Wall B creates a pass through in a long wall. Wall C includes a glass panel to provide a view into an adjacent space. Walls D and E create a smooth transition between an angled and straight wall. 11

design 16
In order to prove my concept of the wall system, I decided to choose an ‘out there’ theme to create a unique experience. Candy Land was my inspiration because it had the structure of a path that an experience can be designed around. Even though, I am choosing to design a Candy Land experience, the intention is that the space and wall system can be changed around to accommodate different themes, whether it is a different game theme, or a different topic 17
