Hello there and a warm (with any luck) welcome to your June magazine. I hope this finds as many of you as possible jabbed / double jabbed and that you are beginning to enjoy the return of freedoms that we seemed to lose an eternity ago. I have smiled when seeing presumably sane members of the public sitting wrapped in coats, hats, gloves and in some cases blankets, on the pavement outside a restaurant or bar and “enjoying”a cold drink and a probably as cold meal, just because they can. Aren’t we a funny breed? Now with a return indoors allowed our dining experiences must improve, and with any luck by the end of this month we will all be enjoying, together, the summer we crave.

Independent Day School for Children

Normality, or more specifically a return to it, is something that is now customary to mention in daily conversation. Of course we won’t really return to things exactly the way they were - as a species we evolve, adapt, adopt and get used to changes that are thrown at us. I subscribe to the BBC’s Archive feed on Facebook and enjoy being reminded of how things were when I was growing up. The introduction of decimalisation, interviewers and interviewees smoking in the TV studio, boffins predicting widescale unemployment as computers the size (and price) of a detached house get to rule our lives, and so on. Change happens and is ongoing, and although it is sometimes triggered by the unavoidable and the unwelcome, there are positives in embracing the new normal. Of course some things don’t seem to change. I’m writing this note the day after the Eurovision Song Contest. Nul points the new normal is the old normal.

Senior Snippets Getting back to exercise Welcome to the latest edition of Senior Snippets: the monthly advisory column with the older members of our community in mind, brought to you by John Moore, Director of Home Instead in North Bristol.

As the lockdown regulations ease and we can all start to get out and about again, now’s a good time to get back into a regular form of exercise.

Walking is one of the best things we can do and has many health benefits including: strengthening bones, improving mobility and muscular endurance as well as cardiovascular health. It also promotes better mental health and cognition and improves the quality of sleep.

Although walking is considered low impact, if it has been some time since you exercised, take things gently.

Don’t do too much too soon, or immediately go back to what you use to do.

Perhaps start with half the distance you were used to and gradually build back up to where you once were.

Give your body adequate rest, build up the distance and intensity, plus the number of walks you do each week, over time.

Bear in mind preparation. The best way to avoid injuries and make the most of your walking routine is to warm up. This will help loosen your muscles and joints, especially if the weather is chilly.

Comfort is key, make sure you wear well fitting shoes with good support and traction.

Walking can be fun and sociable, walking with friends helps maintain an exercise regime. Alternatively join a local walking group and make new friends at the same time!

Coral Island by The Coral

Ogden’s Nut Gone Flake by Small Faces With it’s famous spoken word links by actor and comedian Stanley Unwin, this 1968 classic from Small Faces is an ideal next step after Coral Island (though we really would also encourage you to check out The Coral’s debut album). The main concept appears on the second side of the album, over six songs it tells the story of Happiness Stan and his mission to find the missing half of the moon.

A concept album over four sides about a fictional seaside resort by a guitar band whose best record (their 2002 self-titled debut) came out almost two decades ago might not sound like essential listening, but bear with us as this one really is worthy of your time.

Mellowed by the passage of time, the demonic psych shanties that this Wirral band once made their name with have been replaced by a melodic jangle not too far removed from the likes of Teenage Fanclub (whose new album Endless Arcade is another belter). Songs like Change Your Mind, Mist On The River and Vacancy have a gentle appeal which allows them to slowly creep under your skin.

The big difference between Ogden’s and Coral Island is that the former has a much more upbeat feel to it. Released in 1968, a year after the Summer of Love, there’s still a sense of positivity and possibility drifting across songs such as Afterglow (Of Your Love) and Rene. Side A closes with mockney classic Lazy Sunday, one of the finest songs Small Faces ever made, and a jewel of the 1960s.

There’s also something of a sombre feel to the album, helped by the passages of narration which crop up throughout to tell the story of Coral Island. Snippets of stories featuring arcades, piers, leaving crowds of tourists and retired entertainers help create a mood of melancholia reminiscent of a visit to an abandoned seaside resort during the off season. A similar mournfulness can be felt in the music, whether on acoustic lament Old Photographs or Syd Barrettesque The Calico Girl.

Even the surreal Side B has time for great music. Rollin’ Over successfully borrows the famous riff from Jimi Hendrix’s Foxy Lady and closing track HappyDaysToyTown is a joyfully whacky swansong. Taken as a whole, Ogden’s Nut Gone Flake can stand shoulder to shoulder with anything else made during one of the most exciting and experimental decades in music history.

Podcast of the Month

Though this recurring theme and narration provide a point of interest, it’s the quality of the songs themselves which make Coral Island a genuinely compelling listen. Autumn Has Come is right up with their Pass It On and In The Morning in their catalogue of simple yet striking ballads and Take Me Back To The Summertime somehow perfectly balances influences as geographically diverse as Mersey Beat and Americana (courtesy of some fine lap steel).

Soul Music

Each 30-minutes episode of this BBC Radio 4 podcast delves into a single piece of music and the powerful emotion impact that piece has on listeners.

From how Gloria Gaynor’s I Will Survive inspired the first female rower to cross the Atlantic solo to The Proclaimers Sunshine On Leath becoming the spiritual anthem for the Hibs Supporters Club in Edinburgh, the power of music is highlighted time and again throughout the 150+ episodes of this iconic series.

This late into The Coral’s career, it’s testament to James Skelly and his bandmates that they still have the vision and ability to make a visit to Coral Island such an affecting experience.

EURO 2020 PREVIEW - BEN THOMPSON When UEFA president Michel Platini announced in 2012 that EURO 2020 would be a ‘Euros for Europe’, a one off celebration across the whole of Europe to mark the 60th anniversary of the tournament, he certainly didn’t envisage that no games would be played in 2020. Yet here we are in June 2021 on the eve of the opening game of Turkey versus Italy in the Stade Olimpico. The slogan of the tournament, thought up by Platini and his cronies, was ‘Live it For Real’ - which is ironic as at 8pm (BST), there will be 52,975 empty seats in Rome, with the majority of supporters watching from their living rooms. However there is hope that the final, on the 11th July in England’s national stadium Wembley, could host a full house of fans for the first time in over a year.

Switzerland are in strong form and if they can get the best out of Xherdan Shaqiri, who has been out of sorts with Liverpool, they will be in with a chance.

Outside of Belgium, and making their debut appearance in the Euros are Finland with a recent win against World Cup winners France to their name and an amazing run in the qualification campaign to finish 2nd in their group.

Without their usual manager Ryan Giggs, Wales will have to adapt to the new tactics of replacement Rob Page quickly in what will be a tough group. The talismanic figure and captain Gareth Bale will have to be at his very best, and there are promising signs as his league form boasts 11 goals in 20 games in an underfiring Spurs team. Gareth Bale can’t do it all on his own and the likes of Ethan Ampadu, Daniel James, David Brooks and Neco Williams have the potential to shine at Wales’ second appearance at the Euros.

Russia are looking to build on their hosting of the 2018 World Cup that saw them beat Spain on their way to quarter finals where they were knocked out by runners-up Croatia.

Italy have had a renaissance under the greatly respected manager Roberto Mancini after failing

The Great Danes are back after failing to qualify for Euro 2016 and will hope to repeat the shock of 1992 when they beat Germany to win the competition. EURO 2020 PREVIEW - BEN THOMPSON England have a wealth of young exciting talent at their disposal with the likes of Phil Foden, Mason Greenwood and Jude Bellingham all looking to repeat the heroics of Wazza and Gazza at the Euros and cement their status in the group of the most exciting prospects in Europe. Gareth Southgate will be looking to continue his fine record as a manager at major tournaments, however the path to the final could be potentially more tricky than in Russia as the winners of this group will face the runner-up from the ‘Group of Death’.

Group C - Austria, Netherlands, North Macedonia, Ukraine The other new boys at this year’s Euros are North Macedonia after securing their place via the play offs. Amongst their ranks they have highly rated Leeds Player Ezgjan Allioski.

If Scotland’s qualification campaign is anything to go by, the Tartan Army is in for a bumpy but exciting ride. They were one of the last teams to qualify by winning two play-off games via penalty shoot-outs. With Steve Clarke at the helm and players of real quality such as Andy Robertson, Kieran Tierney and Scott McTominay they have a fighting chance of getting through this group.

Austria and Ukraine have been drawn together and will play a hotly contested game that will feature future Galactico David Alaba of Austria and Premier league winner Oleksander Zinchenko of Ukraine.

Croatia are the Word Cup runners-up having beaten England in heartbreaking fashion in 2018.

Their captain and talisman, the 2018 Ballon d’Or winner Luka Modric is now 35, and their recent form has been poor. Despite this I’d rate them as second favourites to qualify from the group.

After failing to qualify for the last World Cup the Netherlands are back on the international scene, invigorated by the much improved form of Memphis Depay at Lyon, much to the surprise of Manchester United fans after his ill-fated spell at Old Trafford.

Finally the Czech Republic completes the group with star-man Tomas Soucek leading West Ham to a very strong finish in the Premier league. They are the only team to have beaten England during qualifying and will draw some optimism from that.

25 years on, memories of Euro 96, that great summer of football epitomised by Gazza’s flick, volley, goal and dentist chair celebration, will resurface for those of a certain age as England and Scotland have been once again drawn in the same group, along with Croatia and Czech Republic.

Group E - Poland, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden Spain are having something of a resurgence after crashing out of the 2018 World Cup in the round of 16 to Russia, They recently thrashed Germany 6-0 and are strong favourites to win this group.

And who do I think will win? That’ll be Portugal, and if you want more of an outside bet then I fancy a few bob on Italy.

This group has inevitably been given the infamous tag of being the ‘Group of Death’ and for good reason. It features both the former World Cup and Euro winners in France and Portugal and 2014 World Cup winners Germany.

The Player of the Tournament will be Bruno Fernandes and the Golden Boot will go to Robert Lewandowski.

Portugal have been collecting trophies with ease over the last few years, adding the Uefa Nations league to their collection in 2019. Cristiano Ronaldo will be supported by an ever-stronger cast featuring Premier league stars Bruno Fernandes and Ruben Dias.

Whoever does what, enjoy the festival.

France, like Portugal, have an embarrassment of riches featuring Kylian Mbappe - earmarked as a future Ballon d’or winner surely. Manager Didier Deschamp’s task will be to manage the huge ego’s of some of these players and get them singing from the same hymn sheet.

Germany have had a torrid time of late, losing to minnows North Macedonia was the icing on a very unpleasant cake. However they still have

There are few immediate implications for individuals as a result of Brexit, but those with homes in an EU country will need to be aware of several key points.

ON OUR DOORSTEPS - SNUFF MILLS The walk from here needs little in the way of direction from me, it is flat, well signposted and easy to follow. There is a main route that follows the banks of the River Frome (think something between the Trym and the Avon in terms of scale) towards Frenchay, and lots of subsidiary paths that lead off into the wooded valley either side of the river.

Here’s a reminder of how big Bristol is. It covers 110 square kilometres, has a population of just under half a million and is represented by 34 council wards. Let’s compare that to London 1,572 square km, 9 million people, 631 council wards. So London is about 18 times the size of Bristol.

Ok, so when I lived in London for about a year and a half, back in the days when the world was in black and white, I felt I knew the city like the back of my hand. I walked everywhere and I knew everywhere. So how is it that after 32 years in the little city of Bristol I am still discovering places? Why after three decades have I only now unearthed Snuff Mills?

Following the path from the carpark you will soon pass the cottage gardens, Whitwood Mill (a stone mill, never a snuff mill) and a small weir, then continue along the north side of the river, until you cross it on Halfpenny Bridge and continue along the south bank.

I guess it is in part because I have spent all my time in the north and the west of the city, so have never really ventured out east in search of places new. Sure, I had heard of Snuff Mills, but it is not really on the way to anywhere so unless you hunt it down it goes unnoticed.

I only discovered it recently when seeing a sign for it on the way to a friends house, and I made a mental note that I should finally pay it a visit. So on a bright, dry day in mid May - you’ll remember the one, it was the only one when it didn’t rain - I set off to rectify this oversight.

There now follows a path of maybe three quarters of a mile that is not only a lovely walk but is great for children and buggies too as it is flat, wide, well surfaced and traffic free. Mind you, do keep an eye on the littlun’s because although some of the path is fenced there are sections where there is open access to the riverbank, and the Frome is free flowing especially after the recent rains.

Snuff Mills isn’t hard to find, but easy to miss - if that makes any sense. I headed all the way down Muller Road to the M32 Eastville Junction and turned left as if to join the motorway outbound, but immediately veered sharp left, before the sliproad, and onto the main road towards Stapleton. This heads under the motorway, by the traffic lights, up the hill past Colston’s School and the impressively beautiful Stapleton Holy Trinity Church, and meanders for about half a mile through Stapleton before dropping away to the right to reach a little roundabout. On your left is the entrance to Stoke Park Estate, but you need to head right at the roundabout, dip downhill and after only 100 yards or so turn left by the signpost to Snuff Mills. Follow the narrow River View and park in the large free carpark.

If you follow the south bank, ignoring the paths off up into the woods, you will eventually come to a second larger weir. At this point the path starts to get muddy, and then a little further on veers up and right, away from the river. At this point the surface degenerates (“un-maintained” says the notice boards) and becomes a rocky path where the potential to slip or stumble becomes obvious.

ON OUR DOORSTEPS - SNUFF MILLS A walk along the Frome at Snuff Mills reminded me in many ways of the walk along the Trym in Blaise, albeit on a grander scale.

Your are accompanied by the constant sound of running water as you walk along the floor of a valley clothed in majestic ancient woodland, with cliff faces and rocky outcrops rising darkly above you, visible through the trees. And all the way you could be forgiven for forgetting that, like Blaise, you are just a couple of miles from the centre of the south west’s largest city.

To add to the fun of your walk, especially if you have children with you, why not take part in a spot of birdwatching en-route? I was fortunate to see not one but two kingfishers, flying at speed and in formation low over the river, like a couple of Red Arrows - but blue. Maybe see which of these birds I spotted on my walk you can see - and count your points if you want to make a game of it.

This might be a good point to turn and head back the way you came. If you persevere though, and scramble over the rocky path, it will soon start to descend gently again and you will reach a bigger, but still small and quaint, bridge over the Frome. This is Frenchay Bridge, dating from 1788. If you wish to continue your walk you can do so by following paths that lead from here to Frenchay and Bromley Heath, but I chose to head back.

Enjoy the walk.

On your return you can take one of the obvious paths that head off up to your left that will lead you to the Oldland Court Estate.

Mentioned in the 11th century Domesday Book the estate has seen many changes of layout and ownership, including a re-landscaping at the hands of Sir Humphry Repton in the early nineteenth century, and the demolition of the house after WW2. Oldland Court passed into public ownership in 1936 and is now a great place to visit with an excellent children’s playground, cafe, walks and picnic areas.

It was only a matter of time before a “sort of curry” dish emerged in print, as Saturday night is homemade curry night for us (enjoyed last night with a mug of tea and the ritual humiliation of the UK in Eurovision).

Ingredients 2 onions 4 cloves of garlic 5cm piece of fresh ginger 500 ml vegetable stock 500g total of cauliflower, floury potatoes and mushrooms 1 mugful frozen peas 1 tsp paprika 1 tsp chilli powder 1 pinch saffron, soaked in a little hot water 1 tbsp dark soy sauce 1 tbsp mango chutney 1 tbsp creme fraiche (optional) Olive oil

This time around it is a vegetarian dish, but one that can easily be modified for those who like a bit of meat. If so just add 300g of diced chicken in, and halve the quantities of potato and cauliflower. The taste is reminiscent of bombay potatoes that you get from your favourite takeaway. I wanted to call this dish “Aloo, aloo, aloo” as it was originally planned as a three vegetable dish - potatoes (Bombay Aloo), cauliflower (Aloo Gobi) and mushrooms (Aloo Mushrooms).

But I decided it needed peas as well (Aloo Matar I think), and “Aloo, aloo, aloo, aloo” doesn’t sound so good. So it has been (not so snappily) re-christened.

Method 1.

If you have a food processor then roughly chop the onion and garlic, and grate the ginger, and then blitz them in the blender until you have a finely chopped paste. If you don’t have a processor then it is absolutely OK to chop the onion as finely as you can, crush the garlic and grate the ginger.

Now take your cauliflower, mushrooms and potatoes and chop all of them into small florets / bite sized pieces (about the size of the top half of your thumb).

If you are doing the chicken option then chop the chicken into pieces slightly smaller than the size of your veg.

In a wok or large deep-sided frying pan warm up a tablespoon of olive oil on a medium heat, then add in the onion, garlic and ginger mixture. Fry gently for five to ten minutes, stirring frequently, until the onion has softened and the mixture is nice and golden.

Lower the heat under your pan and add the paprika, chilli powder,

THE “HAVE A GO” CHEF saffron liquid and soy sauce to the onion/garlic/ginger paste and mix in together. Don’t let the mixture burn as it can easily catch at this point.

or spoon a little out if it is too liquid, and give it a couple more minutes to reduce the sauce to a nice consistency.

Take the curry off the heat and, if you want to, stir in the creme fraiche.

(When testing the recipe out I added in greek yoghurt and it wasn’t a great success - the photo here makes it look as if it had curdled a bit. It tasted better than it looked but in future I’ll stick to the creme fraiche, or more likely not add in anything at all).

10. All you need to do now is serve your curry up with some plain boiled rice, or as I did some brown rice (which takes much longer to cook than white so don’t forget to put it on nice and early).

11. Add the obligatory garnish - I forgot to buy any coriander so had to make do with a basil leaf but it doesn’t matter, it’s just for show really - then enjoy your supper.

(If you are having chicken then add in the chicken pieces to the pan, coat in the spice paste, increase the heat to medium and then fry gently for five minutes).

It is time to add in the potatoes, cauliflower and mushrooms, stirring things well to ensure that all the veg is coated with your spice mix. Add in the stock, bring to the boil and then reduce to a very low simmer. Pop a lid on the pan if you have one and then leave the curry to cook for fifteen minutes.

7.

Remove the lid, add in the frozen peas and the mango chutney, stir well and return to a gentle simmer, uncovered, for a further five minutes.

Now it is testing time - check the veg and / or chicken to see if it is cooked through. If necessary add in a little more water if it is looking too dry, 24 39

BERWICK LODGE AND THE NATIONAL GARDENS SCHEME of gardens, four of which offer a peaceful garden for visitors and which are yours to explore as part of the NGS summer season.

Getting this far in the magazine suggests to me that you might have already found this month’s walk on page 14 (unless you are a strange creature like me and always read a magazine (but not a novel) backwards).

In which case you will have read of my discovery of a hidden Bristolian gem, Snuff Mills. Closer to home is another such gem, one which I guess many readers will have heard of but perhaps not many have visited.

Berwick Lodge is a beautiful independent hotel and gardens, and next month you will have the chance to have a bit of a look around the grounds. To get there is an adventure in itself. Heading up towards the Mall go past the Old Crow roundabout, then just before the second roundabout by Clifton Rugby Club you turn left, as if cutting back into Henbury. Cross the Henbury road into the little lane opposite that runs alongside what used to be the sports ground (under redevelopment) and follow the jade coloured BL signs. You will go up through the woods, a couple of sharp rights and lefts (great view on your right of the old Filton airport from here) before emerging above the M5. Cross the motorway bridge (a bit unnerving) and head straight on up the driveway until you arrive at the big gravelled car park on your left.

I was fortunate enough to get an early look at the gardens and a chat with engaging Head Gardener Robert Dunster. Robert comes with quite some pedigree, having worked for Prince Charles in the gardens at Highgrove, and not surprisingly employs the same sustainable, organic, natural gardening methods as the heir to the throne would espouse. As with any garden, Berwick Lodge is, and will always remain, work in progress, and regular vistors will get the chance to see how the gardens develop and mature over the seasons and years.

When I visited in April it was cold and wet, but signs of spring were everywhere, and by the time of their NGS opening in July the grounds will look beautiful. Robert has been working on many fronts, restoring the orchard, tending the natural flower meadow, planting up the herbaceous border, encouraging the clematis and wisteria up and along the pergolas. Recent tree pruning has opened up a pretty view across to Wales, and the grounda are dotted with large specimen trees of many types.

HISTORY NOTES - JULIAN LEA-JONES No. 159 - A most famous but forgotten son, Edward Hodges Baily

provided continuity between traditional classical and emerging new styles. By 1818 he had won several medals and monetary prizes, but his reputation as a master sculptor was made by his commission for the Bristol Literary Institution.

The work, “Eve at the Fountain”, still has pride of place in the Bristol Art Gallery and Museum in Queens Road,

This account is based upon my more detailed paper which featured in UWE’s, Regional Historian journal. The project was the brainchild of my Temple Local History Group member, David Brace, who in 1985 set in motion a chain of events which had an amazing outcome that none of us could have ever imagined.

His first Royal patronage came when King George IV included him amongst the artists commissioned to execute the sculpture group in front of Buckingham Palace, in the Throne Room at the Palace - where friezes around the walls depict scenes from the Wars of the Roses, namely, Battle of Tewksbury, Battle of Bosworth Field, Union of the red and White Roses, (marriage of Henry VII to Elizabeth of York), and the bass relief panels on Marble Arch. Although his major work, ‘Eve at the Fountain’, is in marble he also worked in silver, bronze, and stone. At the height of his career, he was justifiably regarded as ‘the sculptor to the nation’ as testified by this listing of some of his commissions: Lord Byron, George Cannings, Sir Astley Cooper, Lord Eldon, Charles James Fox, Earl Grey, Sir Thomas Lawrence, Sir Robert Peel, Lord Mansfield, Lord Nelson, Thomas Telford, HRH The Duke of Sussex, The Duke of Wellington, Southey (the Bristolian Poet laureate) and for Hannah More’s grave tablet at Wrington Church.

Edward Hodges Baily, one of Bristol’s incredibly famous sons, was born at No 1 Red Lodge Court, just off Park Row, on 10th March 1788.

Edward’s father John, an eminent ship’s carver, was rumoured to have been responsible for the carving of the original Indian Chief figurehead for the ship Demerara that stood for many years outside the Rupert Street side of the former Demerara House at the end of Colston Avenue.

Edward attended Bristol Grammar School but paid more attention to producing portraits of his school friends than to his studies. Leaving school at fourteen he was entered into a merchant’s accounting office, but office life clashed with his artistic desires and after only two years he decided to leave. Two friends who encouraged his artistic talents were Mr. Weeks and Dr. Leigh, a local surgeon. Possibly it was the influence of Mr. Weeks, who modelled in wax (a fashion started in England by George III), who introduced him to that medium and aroused his interest in threedimensional art. Marguerite Fedden, also writing about Edward, had been told that it was the sight of a memorial monument by John Bacon to Mrs. Draper in Bristol Cathedral that influenced Edward to turn from drawing to modelling.

According to his family a delightful statue of ‘Sleeping Nymph’ was modelled on his daughter.

Apparently, Edward discovered her asleep on a couch, whereupon he took the opportunity to model her impromptu pose. Another of his civic commissions was for the ‘Statue of Justice’ that surmounts the old Council House in Corn Street.

When erected, much adverse comment was made because the figure of Justice held the Sword of Retribution but had no scales of judgment or balance - an omission which attracted ribald comment from the Bristol Magpie newspaper.

However, the omission became even more worrying when the building, still surmounted by Baily’s statue, became the Crown Court, (good news for miscreants because by then the copper sword of retribution had corroded away)!

A major milestone in his life was when his friend Dr. Leigh showed some of Edward’s Homeric Studies, of the Odyssey and the Iliad, to his friend John Flaxman. Young Edward’s work so impressed Flaxman that he invited him to enter his studio in London. Within the year Edward’s prodigious talent had been recognised, and although only twenty he was made an Associate of the Royal Academy, followed by full membership the following year. He continued as a pupil of Flaxman for seven years before getting a position as sculptor and carver for a firm of gold and silversmiths, later setting up his own at a studio in Percy Street in London. His output as a sculptor was amazing and his artistic works

HISTORY NOTES - JULIAN LEA-JONES photographer, to take a picture of what was probably already Edward’s most photographed statue, that of Nelson on the column in Trafalgar Square. His photograph was taken and included in our Temple Local History Group’s newsletter, along with the article Reg Doshell, steeplejack and a letter from Nigel © Nigel Lea-Jones. describing how he managed to take the photograph from a totally unexpected viewpoint, (remember this was long before the days of drones - N Naively I thought Nigel would use a telephoto lens, but no, He climbed the column!

Great, Great, Aunt Sophia Gould. Until that time, although Frances knew from the inscription that the delightful little wax silhouette was of her Great, Great, Aunt, she had no idea who had made it. However, I then remembered Marguerite Fedden’s account of Edward’s youthful enterprise producing portraits in coloured wax. What would have been more natural for the young Edward than to make this present for his mother using his new-found wax modelling skills? If this supposition is correct, the description could have been added when it was either framed or reframed about five years later when his skill had been acknowledged by the Royal Academy, but before he was made a Fellow of the Royal Society.

An alternative explanation could be that he made it during his time with Flaxman.

Now for the exciting discovery. During my visit to Frances, she mentioned a large oil portrait of “E.H.” formerly on the wall of their house in Bristol which had been damaged during the World War II blitz. Apparently it had been rescued, crated up and sent to her brother, Peter Palmer Bawn, who lived in Falkirk, Scotland. There this account would have ended but for another chain of events which were set in motion by this news.

At that time I was editor of the Bristol Masonic Society Newsletter and ran an article about our Baily discoveries which was read by Christopher Williams.

A few months later one of our members, Mrs. Frances Charlton, visiting me on another matter, happened to see our magazine open at David’s article and asked if we realised that E.H. Baily was one of her relatives. Frances then gave me the following explanation. “I knew that my family were connected with this Bristolian, as my father had mentioned his name many times. However, when I saw David’s article I was reminded of my illustrious ancestor, Edward Hodges Baily.

Coincidentally, a short while later while sorting through old books that had belonged to my grandparents, I found one which had been given to my grandfather, inscribed inside; “James F Bawn, with his Uncle’s best wishes September 1875”. Upon my Mother’s death I was left a framed wax silhouette of Sophia Gould on the back of which is written, ‘Sophia Gould wife of John Baily, Mother of Ed H Baily R.A born in Christchurch, Hants’.

Now for yet more coincidences. Above the portico of the Hall at the bottom of Park Street is a frieze sculpted by Edward when the building was the home of the 19th Century Bristol Institution for the Advancement of Science and Literature.

Details of his description of the sculpted figures on the panel and their meaning are included as they further demonstrate his interest and knowledge of the classical subjects. “My frieze represents; The Arts, Sciences, and Literature being introduced by Apollo and Minerva to the City of Bristol, who seated on the Avon, receives them under her maternal protection and dispenses to their encouragement and rewards, whilst Plenty unveils herself to peace, since under their happy influence their explanations of the human intellect flourish and improve.”

Christopher Williams was at that time the Worshipful Master of the Baily Lodge of Freemasons In the Province of Bristol, which had

Christopher’s interest was piqued by the history of the Lodge’s namesake, and in 1988 he asked me for an introduction to Frances Charlton.

This resulted in the family agreeing to loan their portrait for an exhibition in Bristol, and arrangements were made for its collection from Scotland. However it then turned out that the portrait had never been unpacked since being rescued from the blitz, and neither Frances nor her brother knew the extent of any damage.

Because of the painting’s importance we sought the advice of the City Museum and Art Gallery.

Their Curator of Fine Art, Francis Greenacre, warned us: “After so many years, be prepared to find nothing in the crate but fragments of canvas and mouse droppings.” Next our thanks went to our friend Kevin Rees-Jones, who in September 1990 cheerfully volunteered to undertake the very long drive, to Scotland and back to collect the crate. Thus, after an absence of nearly half a century, the crate, hopefully containing the portrait of Edward Hodges Baily, RA, F.R.S, arrived back in his home city. With great trepidation the large crate was opened. Imagine everyone’s relief and delight when we unwrapped a splendid, but shrapnel damaged, portrait of E. H. Baily. The even better news was that the worst shrapnel damage was outside the area of the portrait itself. Francis thought that it was probably repairable. Christopher Williams, on

behalf of Bristol Freemasons very kindly donated the cost of professional restoration.

So it was after much goodwill, organisation and luck that after nearly 150 years, Edward Hodges Baily, R.A., F.R.S. was able to take up residence in the very hall whose portico he so delightfully enhances with his sculpted panel.

A further interesting discovery was made when the restorers announced that it was a true family portrait as it had been painted by Edward’s son, William.

Conclusions. A chance sighting of a picture in an open book set in train a set of actions and revelations that resulted in more being found out about one of Bristol’s most famous sons, and a masterpiece of art returning to the city. All of this was only made possible by a curious set of circumstances and much goodwill. It would be fitting if all the different threads of Edward Hodges Baily’s life could be pulled together as a memorial to this famous Bristolian, of whom we should all be proud. It is sad that as far as I know this very famous son of Bristol has no plaque in his home city to mark his achievements.

Power of Attorney When a person makes a power of attorney, they appoint someone else to act on their behalf. The person making the power of attorney is called a donor and the person appointed to act on their behalf is called an attorney.

If a person wants you to look after their financial affairs for a temporary period, they can give you an ordinary power of attorney. If they want you to look after their affairs for a long period of time, they can make a lasting power of attorney (LPA), of which there are two types: property and financial affairs LPA and health and welfare LPA. Although a common request amongst family members, few people discuss the potential risks of agreeing to be someone’s attorney. Of course, it is understandable to want to take the pressure from a loved one but you should be aware of your legal duty of care obligations before you agree.

Shut off Windows tips and tricks. In my experience, I’ve rarely if ever found these “tips” helpful. So switch ‘em off!

5. Stop OneDrive from syncing. Microsoft’s cloud-based OneDrive file storage is great, but it can slow down your PC as it syncs. If you don’t use it - stop the syncing. Or....

6. Use OneDrive Files on-Demand. You can keep syncing to an absolute minimum and only do it when absolutely necessary by using Files-On-Demand 7. Turn off search indexing. Slower PCs that use indexing can see a performance hit, and you can give them a speed boost by turning off indexing.

8. Clean out your hard disk. A bloated hard disk filled with files you don’t need could be slowing down your PC. Windows 10 has a surprisingly useful built-in tool for doing this called Storage Sense. Take a look!

9. Clean out your Registry. Over time, Windows registry gets filled with countless outdated settings leading to system slowdowns. Use a registry cleaner to tidy up.

10. Disable shadows, animations and visual effects. Windows 10 has some nice design eye candy, but they can exact a performance hit. Turn off shadows, animations, visual effects and transparency.

Change your power settings. If you’re using Windows 10’s “Power saver” plan, you’re slowing down your PC. That plan reduces your PC’s performance in order to save energy. After a very dry April, try to ensure that you are using water saving techniques in the garden. Always mulch your soil to retain moisture, and only water the garden in the morning or evening and direct to the base of the plant. If necessary, I water heavily every 3 days. Also make sure that your pots have saucers underneath.

Keep on top of your weeds! Dig up perennial weeds such as dandelions and couch grass, and enchanters nightshade; and hoe chickweed, shepherds purse and hairy bittercress before they seed.

Mow your lawn every week, but if it’s dry don’t cut too short. It’s not too late to fertilise with seaweed extract, but do it just before rain, as then it will be watered in.

Keep deadheading as this will encourage your plants to produce more flowers instead of diverting energy into producing seeds Now that they have photosynthesised back into the bulb, you can take all the untidy dead leaves off your daffodils.

Stake all tall perennials like these delphiniums if you haven’t done so already, to stop them flopping over.

Give a good feed to your roses to ensure that they continue flowering - organic chicken manure pellets or liquid seaweed extract is best for the organic gardener as they don’t suppress the growth of beneficial mycorrhizal fungi. Other plants could do with the same too, so that they continue to flower throughout the summer.

Trim your evergreen hedges, such as privet, box and lonicera this month. Make sure there are no late nesting birds though! (Do keep an eye out for box caterpillar as they are decimating box plants. Topbuxus is a great preventative feed for box) Prune spring flowering shrubs such as Weigela, Philadelphus, Deutzia and Choisya after they have flowered towards the end of the month. To regenerate a woody plant you can cut out some of the oldest wood (up to a third of the bush) right down to the base don’t leave it too late or the new growth will not have enough time to produce a decent

Because pollinating insects prefer other flowers, I have interspersed my orange pelargoniums with flowering herbs such as sage, lavender, thyme and rosemary, which bees love!

Options for Tenants looking to make an early exit from their Lease

exiting your lease it would be advisable to speak to us at the earliest opportunity so we can check if your lease contains a break clause. The rules relating to break clauses can be quite tricky and often there are conditions attached to the break which must be complied with in order for any notice to be effective.

The last year has been a difficult time for many businesses that have either been unable to open for trade, or who have seen their income drop but overheads stay the same. Whilst the government has tried to help, the inability to trade and falling profits has meant many businesses are facing some tough decisions.

The result is that some tenants are looking to exit their leases early. This article covers the options available to tenants who, for whatever reason, are looking to make an early exit from their lease:

3. Assignment This is where you transfer your lease to another person or company (the assignee).

Most leases contain a clause which requires you to obtain the consent of the landlord before the lease is transferred.

Often the landlord will require the outgoing tenant to enter into an authorised guarantee agreement - this essentially guarantees the obligations of the assignee whilst they are the tenant under the lease. So, if you are looking for a clean break, then you will not necessarily get that with an assignment.

1. Surrender This is where the lease is formally ended by entering into a deed of surrender. All continuing obligations under the lease are terminated and the tenant can potentially fully walk away.

However, agreeing to an early surrender is solely at the landlord’s discretion. They are not obligated to agree and will mostly want some sort of financial recompense for loss of rent during any vacant period, remarketing costs and legal costs for a new lease among others costs.

4. Underletting Again, if you are looking for a clean break then underletting may not be for you but it could a viable option where you want to generate some income from excess space that you do not currently need but that you may require back at some point in the future. Underletting will also need the consent of the landlord and again there will be costs to pay for this.

So this is the best option for the tenant in terms of releasing themselves from any continuing liability but it is something that will need to be negotiated with the landlord.

Conclusion Whilst restrictions are now starting to ease, shops are reopening and people are getting back to the office, the full effects of Covid 19 on the commercial property market will continue to play out for many months or years to come.

But transaction levels are starting to increase which shows that confidence is starting to return.

Casey’s a waitress and she’s been writing a novel for six years. She’s trying to get over Luke, while contending with customers and superiors at work and she lives in a garage. She’s mourning her mother and she’s in debt. She’s thirty-one and things should be better than this, she thinks. Then she meets Silas and then Oscar and they’re very different but both lovable. Oh, and Oscar has two kids that Casey likes. What to do? Well, if you read Lily King’s funny and beguiling novel Writers and Lovers, you’ll find out what she decides and about the novel too. It’s a great read.

If you like quirky, mysterious and slightly disturbing tales that end with a twist, you’ll love Reality and Other Stories by John Lanchester. In Signal, who is the tall man in grey who’s so helpful with the children and has a mobile phone constantly to his ear? And the title story: Iona wakes in her villa bedroom, the start of a reality show for sure, but where are the cameras? And you’ll laugh out loud at the end of Kit when the kit is finally assembled. There are phone messages, a selfie stick, and several other technological triggers in this excellent collection of sinister entertainments.

Dublin born-and-bred Ava teaches English in a Hong Kong school for rich kids. Prices there are phenomenal but her pay isn’t so she moves in with her highly-paid though uncommunicative banker friend Julian. They are just good friends and insist on staying so even when they become more than that - they’re modern and want to remain modern. The situation becomes more modern still when Ava meets Edith. Edith actually listens and the pair have conversations and conversation leads to more. This is the basis for the Exciting Times that Ava lives through in Naoise Dolan’s terrific, witty, thoughtprovoking and gripping novel of that name.
