I’m sure I’m not alone in giving names to various non-human things, and certain inanimate objects. Cars for example all have names - mine are always female. So I currently have Ophelia, who was preceded by Marjorie, Lulu, Alison, Wendy, Myrtle, Emily, Rachel, Francesca, and my first car Kirsty, a little mintgreen Ford Fiesta. Strangely though I can’t remember the name of one of my “ladies” the blue Ford Focus. Maybe that’s because she was so nondescript, my least favourite car.

VIEW FROM THE LORD MAYOR’S PARLOUR and out into the Bristol Channel towards Portishead. The ship is a former naval auxiliary vessel which is now operated by the volunteers of a charitable trust to provide training for young people and youth groups.

Historically the Lord Mayor was honorary Channel Pilot, so it is traditional to steer the ship back into the Avon and home up the gorge. I took the wheel under the very close supervision of Captain Bob Baker and got us home under his expert guidance.

The whole crew were incredibly knowledgeable and experienced in Bristol’s maritime history, so this was a really unique experience.

They say that time flies when you’re having fun. As I write this in early September I’m already well into the second quarter of my year as Lord Mayor of Bristol. I’ve attended a huge range of events, met hundreds of people, chaired three meetings of the full Council and started to work in earnest on the Downs Committee. It still feels like I’m just getting going though and I’m sure that there will be plenty more to come. It does feel like the diary is getting busier as we head into the autumn, with lots of events postponed from earlier in the year.

Up in Westbury we attended the official opening of the Grace Garden school. This is a new special school for children with emotional and social needs on the former Cherry Orchards site off Canford Lane.

Operated by the Ruskin Mill trust, they specialise in teaching and therapy based on practical skills connected to the land. The site is beautiful and the whole place has a wonderfully calm and healing atmosphere.

It was a real joy to celebrate their opening and I can’t think of a better new use for the site.

On a warm Friday evening in mid-August the Lady Mayoress Kath and I attended a reception at Bristol Cathedral to celebrate Luke Jerram’s “Museum of the Moon”, which featured on the cover of last month’s Bristol Nine. It really was stunning to see up close and I hope that lots of you got the chance to do so. It was also lovely to be able to mingle and chat to people in the open space of the cathedral nave, almost like old times.

One of the many pleasures of being Lord Mayor is welcoming people into the Mansion House in Clifton which is my “official residence” (although we don’t actually live there). We are holding open house “At Home with the Lord Mayor” events on the 1st October and 1st December. EXPLORING ASHTON COURT ESTATE track and keeping this first wooded area close on your left. As you clear the wood the views open up downhill on your left.

It’s easy to forget that the Ashton Court estate is so much more than just the home to the Balloon Fiesta and Ashton Court itself. Take the time to explore it though and you will be reminded that it is a huge expanse of beautiful natural space, where you can easily lose yourself - intentionally or unintentionally - and take some time from the busy life that continues just beyond its boundaries. This month’s walk explores some of the upper part of the estate, bordered by Beggar Bush Lane and Clevedon Road. The walk is about 2 miles, along well made / well worn country tracks, and isn’t too arduous (except for a short lung-buster towards the end that comes complete with a bench), so it is fine for the whole family. It is a bit rough in places though, so not ideal for mobility scooters or buggies. It is completely off-road so traffic isn’t an issue.

Keep walking straight ahead towards a larger wooded area, crossing a gravel track that comes across you at right angles - take the gravel path straight in front of you that will lead you to an entrance where the mountain biking trail heads into the woods. Don’t enter the woods here, instead bear right and continue anticlockwise around its perimeter until you reach the far end of the wood. Here the land opens up and you need to bear gently left and downhill so that you head clockwise this time around the edge of the next wooded area that lies ahead of you.

As you drop down across the open ground you will soon have woods aheads of you as well as on your right and far left, so you are heading into a wood cul-de-sac. In the corner, where the wood on your right meets the wood ahead, is a narrow track that leads you into the trees.

Follow this track, past a crumbling estate ruin on your right, and very soon you will emerge back out into the open, with a gravel track running uphill from left to right and a meadow straight ahead of you. This is an orchid protection area, well signposted on the little swing gate into the field. Directly oppposite you is an impossible-tomiss long metal fence that encircles Longwood Quarry. The interesting views into the quarry are long gone, blocked up in the name of safety and security, so there is no real point crossing the field over to the fence. You need to be heading to the bottom far left hand corner of the orchid meadow, so follow the track clockwise around the edge of the field until you reach the wooden

The walk starts from the kiosk by the pitch and putt course, so you need to enter Ashton Court from the top end, through the gatehouse at the top of Rownham Hill, opposite the road that runs down to the suspension bridge. Drive down the avenue beyond the gatehouse and then turn right (you have no choice, straight on is blocked for cars) until you get to the carpark at the top of the rise. Park up - £1.20 all day, cash only, no change! - and you are ready to go. Head off round the back of the kiosk, following signs to the Disc Golf Course and walk away from the kiosk on the well worn track in the grass, so that you are heading towards the woods with the lower part of Ashton Court, and views towards

the west of the city, over to your left. This top flat plateau of the park is skylark territory in the summer. Skirt anticlockwise, following the grassy

gates that lead out of the meadow and into the woods.

Head though the gate into the woods, ignoring the path that turns immediately right (this is a mountain bike-only track). Twenty yards into the woods though, turn right onto the wide, well maintained track that runs through this beautiful section of, what seems to be, predominently beech trees. If the sun is out it filters through the canopy making this a magical place to walk - a footpath and bridleway that you will share with dog-walkers and an occasional horserider.

Continue on up the path and in fifty yards or so you will encounter another swing gate, which exits you from the deer enclosure and onto a well maintained, and thankfully pretty flat, track. Turn right here and follow the path, with the fenced deer enclosure immediately on your right. I don’t know how many deer are resident here - I spotted four small fallow deer browsing in the undergrowth, so it is worth taking a breather here and see what you can spot.

After a couple of hundred yards on this wide woodland walkway the path offers you a choice - straight on or turn left. You need to go for the latter, onto a clear track that drops steadily downhill for a hundred yards, towards the sound of traffic below. At the bottom of the slope, with the busy Clarken Coombe road to Failand ahead of you beyond the wall, you need to double back left, continuing along the path with the wall and road now to your right. You will be continuing to drop gently - remember, on a circular walk for every down there is an up! - with the path eventually beginning to open up as the tall beech trees start to give way, on your left, to what I suspect is an older plantation. This is the clearly marked deer enclosure, behind black metal fencing that proclaims “No Admittance”.

However at the bottom of the drop, as the main path veers right, there is a metal swing gate where you can enter the Fallow Deer Park. Go through the gate, take a deep breath and head off up the rough winding path that takes you

After about two hundred yards running alongside the deer park your track through the woods will burst back out into the open and you’re nearly there. Head off across the grass, uphill and gently to the left, across the footgolf course, until you reach the brow of the hill. From here you will see the car park ahead of you - and the prospect of a well earned coffee.

21ST CENTURY MYSTERIES 5 Big Questions On… Hashtags

as possible online, then you should definitely use hashtags. They make your content searchable for both users and algorithms and ultimately allow you to increase your audience.

This month we’re sinking our teeth into the world of the hashtag, or perhaps that should be #5bigquestions on #hashtags

Other reasons to use hashtags include:

1) What Is a Hashtag?

A hashtag is a word or group of words without spaces or punctuation which are preceded by the # symbol (known as the number, pound or hash sign). Used on social media sites such as Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and LinkedIn, the purpose of a hashtag is to categorize and group together content in order to make it more discoverable by users.

To engage with conversations that are happening online.

To show support for an important cause or issue.

Create your own hashtag for a specific promotion or idea.

4) What Does “Trending” Mean?

When something is trending online it means that a large number of people are currently writing about and searching for that particular topic using a specific hashtag. Trending topics tend to be current affairs or live events that have gained a lot of attention.

The best place to see this is the “Trending” section on Twitter and by knowing what people are currently talking about, and using the trending hashtag in your own posts, users are able to remain current and part of the latest online chat.

Platforms such as Instagram and LinkedIn now allow their users to follow specific hashtags.

This means that user will see posts containing hashtags they follow, for example #BS9, in their social media feeds.

2) Where Do Hashtags Come From?

The idea of hashtags was developed for Twitter by marketing specialist Chris Messina in 2007 as a way for the platform to group together related Tweets. Messina then included the first ever hashtag in a Tweet on 23rd August of that year when he posted:

If you are a business, brand or influencer (more on them in the future) that uses social media, or someone likes using to reach as many people

Always start with the # sign and make sure your hashtag doesn’t contain spaces, punctuation or other symbols.

Remember, hashtags are meant to be searchable so don’t use anything which is too niche.

Similarly, keep things short and punchy.

The more memorable the hashtag is the more likely that other people will be using/looking for it.

Rather than using vastly popular hashtags, try and find slightly more niche words and phrases being used by your target audience – these allow you to connect with the right kind of people.

Nobody likes a hashtag spammer. It’s far better to use one or two relevant ones than litter your social media posts with everything you can possibly think of.

Long lease flats - how to sort out repairs.

The long-term solution to this problem is for the flat owners to buy the freehold themselves. By statute, provided at least half the flat owners participate, then they can ultimately force the freeholder to sell at a price which is determined in the ways set out in the legislation.

If you have a long lease (say 99 years) of a flat a common problem is dealing with repairs to the structure and exterior of the building.

Let us say for example that there is a leak in the roof which is leading to damp problems in the flats below. Very often the lease says the flat owner (meaning the lessee) is not responsible for anything outside his/her flat and that repairs and maintenance will require a contribution to the cost of repairs. Unfortunately it is not uncommon for the freeholder (who is usually responsible for carrying out repairs to the structure of the building) to do nothing. What can be done to sort it out?

Another advantage of buying the freehold is that once you have done so, you can grant 999 year leases to each flat which should make them easier to sell.

Alternatively, if it would be too expensive to buy the freehold then the majority of the leaseholders could set up a “right to manage” company. If that was done and the right to manage acquired by serving all the relevant notices, then the company would take over the freeholder’s responsibility for carrying out repairs to the fabric of the building and in return it could collect service charges from the flat owners.

One solution would be to reach agreement with the other flat owners to get quotes for the necessary repairs and agree that you will share the cost on a voluntary basis. Of course, that only works if the other flat owners co-operate.

A Clifton retailer is appealing for unwanted school shoes to help children in poverty in Africa.

Tanya travelled to Jolaurabi School in January 2018 to help fit the 300+ donated pairs of shoes. She fell in love with the children and their families there and vowed to continue to support them, her aim being to provide shoes for all 800 pupils at the school on an annual basis.

THE HAVE-A-GO CHEF Lasagne, tuna pasta bake, spag bol, macaroni cheese (Note: macaroni with cheese is macaroni cheese, not mac ‘n cheese - don’t get me started!) - they’re all simple, basic “pasta with sauce” kind of things - quick to make, filling and so simple they are a perfect entry into the world of “cooking for yourself now you’ve left home and gone to Uni” that so many freshers are currently looking for. So on the basis that anything goes with pasta - and pasta goes with anything - I thought I’d have a go at putting some things together and see what kind of meal came out. The result was, I have to say, rather good - so I commend it to the house. Of course, as with all these recipes, if you want to go off-piste then you go for it. Here for example I used dolcelatte, as a mild blue cheese that didn’t threaten to overpower the other ingredients. If you want to go for a strength 5 mature Stilton instead then you go right ahead. Similarly, feel free to use whatever pasta shape you like - the “do try to use cartone, its just the best shape to carry the sauce” theory is all a bit of nonsense in my book *. I use penne simply because it’s easy to pick up in pairs on a four-pronged fork.

Method OK, let’s get cracking.

Porky Pasta with Blue Cheese This makes a lot - three of us had it twice, so that’ll be six good portions.

Ingredients • •

2 white onions, finely diced 3 cloves of garlic, crushed 2 small / 1 large sticks of celery, finely chopped 250g fresh tomatoes, as tasty as you can get, roughly chopped about a dozen mushrooms, whatever sort you like - finely sliced 1 tbsp chopped fresh rosemary (dried if you must) 1 tbsp chopped fresh sage (ditto) 1/2 litre vegetable stock 250g passata 300ml sour cream 250g dolcelatte cheese Salt and black pepper olive oil

First off, pop your pasta on to boil in plenty of salted water. This should take 10-12 minutes and can be done in advance if it’s easier as it will reheat nicely later in the recipe. Drain and set to one side.

In a large deep pan heat some olive oil and then add in your chopped onion and chopped celery. Fry gently over a medium heat for 5-10 minutes until the onion has softened and gone shiny and translucent.

Now add in your garlic, cook for a couple more minutes and then turn up the

second layer of everything - meat sauce, mushrooms, pasta and cheese sauce.

heat a little, add in all the pork mince and continue to stir over the heat until the pork colours up and goes from pink to pale brown.

Sprinkle in the rosemary and sage, add in the chopped tomatoes and the passata and about three quarters of the stock. Stir, bring to the boil, then reduce to a gentle simmer. Cook uncovered for maybe twenty minutes, stirring occasionally to make sure it doesn’t stick or go too dry.

Add a little more of the stock if necessary.

The aim is to end up with a meaty sauce that is quite dry (no watery juice at the bottom), so if you need to just simmer a little more until the liquid has reduced.

Your sauce should be ready anywhere between 20 and 30 minutes cooking time.

For the cheese sauce, in a small saucepan add all the sour cream. Chop 100g of the dolcelatte into small pieces (this will be sticky and aesthetically a mess but that’s fine) and add it into the sour cream. If you have any of the vegetable stock left add maybe a wineglass full to the sour cream / cheese mix. It’s not the end of the world if you don’t, your sauce may just be a little thicker - or you can add just a dash of hot water). Add in a large twist of black pepper. Gently cook the cheese sauce over a low-medium heat, stirring to help the cheese break down. When it is smooth and fully melted take off the heat.

Don’t worry if it looks a bit thin, that’ll be fine.

Now it is assembly time. Pre-heat your oven to about 180-200 degrees C (about gas mark 6). In a large deep overproof dish (a large ceramic lasagne dish is great - or you could use two smaller dishes if necessary) add in about half of the meat mixture and spread over the base of the dish. Top this in a layer with half the uncooked mushrooms. Next spoon over about half of the cooked pasta and, using the back of a large spoon, push the layers down as well as you can (there’s more to fit in!). Now drizzle over half of the cheese sauce mix, covering all the pasta as best you can. Then repeat the process with a

Finally chop the remaining 100g of dolcelatte into small pieces and dot these randomly across the surface of the dish, before putting it into your pre-heated oven. Cook for about 20 minutes, by which time the cheese topping will have melted and the visible edges of the pasta may have turned a bit crunchy.

Remove from the oven, spoon everybody up a nice big bowlful, garnish with something green - probably parsley, basil, whatever - and serve maybe with a crisp salad and a drink of some sort. Enjoy - I hope you will.

Changes to social care Early in September, the news was dominated by the Prime Minister setting out the Government’s plans for social care in England and how they will be funded.

The proposed changes announced by Boris Johnson on Tuesday affect those entering care from October 2023 and these are the headline points: If you live in your own home, all of your social care will be funded by taxpayers if you have less than £20,000 in assets — excluding the value of your home. Partial funding is available if you have assets worth up to £100,000.

As is the case with current means testing, once you have moved in to a care home, the value of your property will be included in your assets. In this scenario, some people may need to sell their home to fund their care if they have a low income.

There will be an overall cap on the amount any individual has to pay for care of £86,000. The figure only covers personal care costs, not residential (aka ‘hotel’ costs) which can be extremely high!

The Care Act 2014, which is the framework to be used to introduce the reforms announced today, fixed the personal care cost calculation using the costs that would be assessed and paid by a local authority, not the (usually much higher) self-funding costs levied by homes.

The Government’s main document on its changes says that it will use legislation in the Act to ‘ensure that self-funders are able to ask their Local Authority to arrange their care for them so that they can find better value care’. Precisely what effect that will have in practice is unclear.

It seems the reality of the proposed changes mean that unfortunately for many their assets are still at risk from being swallowed by care costs.

HISTORY NOTES No. 163 - AN ALARMING START TO THE DAY in 1892. This machine required a pilot light and was lit by gas—not a great contraption to have next to you while you sleep.

By the early years of the twentieth century middle-class families, who had relied on human labour to help with the running of their homes, were having to turn to mechanical means to try to ease the household burden.

Many 1920’s homes in Clifton and northwest Bristol still had one or more domestic servants, as evidenced by the systems of call bells such as those illustrated in my August 2019 History Note number 118. At the time of writing that article our then house still had its servant call system, complete with indicator box in the kitchen. Ours was hand lettered and made

by Jarvis & Co of Elton Road in Redland who probably also installed the system and bought the components from MAC, Bristol’s Metal Agency Company.

This was followed in 1902 by the equally dubious, but slightly more commercially successful, ‘Clock That Makes Tea’, which used a methylated spirits burner to heat the water.

How did it work? When the alarm clock went off, a match was struck to light the spirit lamp beneath the kettle. When the kettle boiled, it would tilt forward and pour the hot water into a waiting cup. A second alarm would go off when the tea was ready—if you had somehow slept through the commotion.

One of the problems was that many of the early devices attempted to replicate the actions of a sentient human i.e. by tipping the kettle of boiling water into the teapot and hoping that all the water went into the teapot and not over the sleeper! Any accidental knocking of the apparatus during the night causing misalignment could give rise to the expression ‘arising from bed like a scalded cat’.

Nowadays the only being in our house with servants is a Siamese cat. Fortunately, she can’t reach the call buttons. There were bell pushes in the drawing room, dining room, study, bedroom, and front & back doors and, most alarmingly, one on the side of the bath.

I say ‘alarmingly’ – no pun intended - because the system was connected to the mains without any safety cut-out. In the event of an electrical fault, a call for help could may have resulted in the housekeeper arriving to remove the corpse! Upon buying the house in the 1970s disconnecting the system was a priority task.

However, the museum’s account of a nineteenth century commotion would, as we shall see, have paled into insignificance compared to a RAF Technician’s attempt to out-perform Heath Robinson!

Nevertheless, by the 1920s domestic service was in decline, which provided the impetus for devising mechanical devices to replace the missing housemaid. The need for an early morning cuppa was one such motivation.

Although the new labour-saving inventions didn’t go as far as Aardman Animation’s Wallace and Grommit’s automatic breakfast delivery, many of the early contraptions were more akin to Heath Robinson’s zany, amusing, amazingly complex but totally impractical creations. However household technologies were developing at great speed, changing the face of domestic work.

Although alarm clock-initiated tea-makers were created in the late nineteenth century it was not until the 1950’s that tea makers became safe enough to become a familiar bedside accessory. Trials were very successful; it boiled a mug of water in under a minute. But how to initiate it before I awoke?

The weight of the filled teapot switched the power from the kettle to a bell and bedside lights.

I had a brilliant but misguided idea, (eat your heart out Heath Robinson). Simply wind the cuckoo clock at the same time each night, connect the neutral side of the mains to the clock mechanism, stick a brass electrode to the wall with ‘Jungle’ tape, (duct tape), so that when the clock weight ran down and touched the contact it completed the 240 mains connection to the mug assembly - the live side of the mains being connected to the ring of alternate steel bolts.

In the late 1950s, when I was in the RAF, Tufnol ® was the generic name of an electrical insulating material made from many layers of cloth, probably linen. These were sandwiched, and compressed in a phenolic resin, to form sheets or blocks. It was both very strong and capable of withstanding high voltages and was the ubiquitous material for constructing test benches, and equipment where high strength combined with electrical insulation.

Indeed, during World War II, it was said that “Every time a Lancaster took off, a thousand Tufnol parts went with it.” It was so strong that I remember a friend used a piece to craft a replacement tooth sector which had broken on his car’s flywheel. Riveted in place, it worked perfectly.

However my unofficial use of it was in the construction of a novel and lethal automatic tea maker. I had been given a traditional cuckoo clock, which graced the wall above my barrack room bed (Pit). Unfortunately, I then came across an Electrical Research Association article about industrial water heaters that worked by passing mains electricity directly through the water, inside a glass insulated container. Unlike a domestic electric kettle they couldn’t boil dry, no water meant no electric current. I thought “this is interesting, I don’t have a suitable glass container, but an RAF China mug would surely do”. I added top and bottom plates of Tufnol® with the mug clamped between them, a sealed tube as the

A lovely few days of early morning tea were enjoyed, but they say pride comes before a fall. Unbeknownst to me, while I was asleep, someone put salt in the mug of water. I was awoken by a horrendous bang as the fuse box was blown off the wall. (Perhaps we shouldn’t have previously replaced the fuse wire with nails). This event was followed by shouting, and should I say, much cursing, amid general pandemonium before we all made a sharp exit. One outcome was the imposition of punitive barrack damages, shared between all of us, guilty and innocent alike. The other outcome was the unanimous decision to tell me to stick to the more conventional style of teamaker and not come up with any similar hare-brained ideas. After that I stuck to making robots – maybe I’ll tell more about those another time.

Commercial property evictions ban extended to March 2022 and proposed new arbitration process The Government announced in June 2021 that it would be extending the current ban on forfeiture of a commercial lease for non-payment of rent until 25 March 2022. This will have been a welcome relief for many tenants, especially those in the leisure and retail sectors who have been most impacted by lockdown closures, but for those landlords who already have considerable arrears, there will be concern that by continuing the existing measures for a further 9 months it will do nothing to unlock the stalemate or allow the market to recover.

Landlords are still able to pursue a contractual debt claim and the ban on statutory demands and winding up petitions expires on 30 September 2021, so there are other options available. However, the most recent measures could be seen by some to be more favourable to tenants which will be frustrating for those landlords who have sought to work with their tenants during the pandemic to proactively navigate the implications of the nationwide closures.

It has also been announced that new legislation will be introduced by the Government in this Parliamentary session. It is intended that measures will be introduced to ring-fence any outstanding commercial rent arrears built up by tenants as a result of the pandemic closures and tenants and landlords will be guided to come to an agreement on how to deal with the money owed. This will be either by agreeing to waive some of the total amount due or by drawing up a longer-term repayment plan.

Where agreement cannot be reached, an arbitration process will put in place under the new legislation to make a formal award that will be legally binding and must be complied with by both parties. This new arbitration scheme will be delivered by private arbitrators, who must prove their impartiality, in accordance with guidelines outlined by the legislation.

The extension to the current eviction ban and the proposed arbitration scheme will potentially be controversial, and while it could be a lifeline to some, it will undoubtedly cause hardship for others. If you are a tenant struggling to pay your current rent or you are a landlord who has tenants with arrears then it is worth speaking to a legal professional about your options.

A community hall in Redland is finally reopening its doors after closing for a major revamp which was swiftly followed

by Covid restrictions.

Westmoreland Hall – the headquarters of Girlguiding Bristol & South Gloucestershire (BSG) - secured grants to pay for the refurbishment in 2019 but had to remain shut during 2020 to comply with pandemic rules.

Access, security and facilities have all been improved, making the space a much more inviting place for Girlguiding members and the local community.

The hall once belonged to Redland Collegiate School and was acquired by the Guide Association in 1934. When owned by the girls’ school, the hall had a curtained stage at the far end and a tiny kitchenette. Girlguiding Rangers who attended meetings there in the 1960s recall the room being cold and drafty even during the Spring.

Grants for the recent refurbishment were received from a variety of organisations including the John James Bristol Foundation and Enovert Community Trust.

Girlguiding uses Westmoreland Hall as a base for staff and volunteers and it will soon be home to Guiding units in BSG, who will hold their weekly meetings there.

The refreshed space is also now welcoming its first hirers since the start of the pandemic.

Joint County commissioner, Lorna Lee, said: “We are so excited to finally reopen Girlguiding BSG’s headquarters and have a space which is accessible and functional for all those who will use it. Thanks to the grants we received and all the hard work of our staff and volunteers we now have a place to meet, be proud of and grow

BRUCE FELLOWS’ BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS Want to feel uncomfortable but always entertained and highly amused?

Then The Dinner Party, Joshua Ferris’s witty but often excruciating and sad collection of eleven stories of the middle-class (and lower) is the book for you. In the title story a husband goes to investigate the non-arrival of his and his wife’s dinner guests and learns more than he bargained for. Retired life in Florida, the anxious life of a Hollywood writer, life in a mobile home; what horrors they each display! Uniting these tales and most of the others is the truly appalling behaviour of some comically horrendous men. Well worth your while reading.

In 1977, when Calista is 21, she meets famed film director Billy Wilder. He employs her to interpret for him on the Greek island where he is making his final film. Wilder struggles with the realisation that his time has passed.

It’s Spielberg and Scorcese time now. Jonathan Coe tells the story of Billy and Calista in his vivid, funny and very moving novel, Mr Wilder and Me. In the present day, Calista has her current family difficulty to deal with but remembers how Wilder was haunted by the tragedy of his own. This is a great novel, and for everyone, not just film buffs.

Pizza Girl by Jean Kyoung Frazier is the story of . . . well, we don’t know her name, but Jenny to whom she delivers pizza with pickles christens her.

At 18, Pizza Girl is struggling with life. In fact, she’s a mess. Pregnant and living with her mother and wonderful boyfriend, Billy, who’s given up school for her, she still suffers over her father’s death but hopes the middle-aged Jenny and Jenny’s young son Adam can help her through. Or will her mental turmoil drive her to disaster? This is a highly inventive, very witty novel that engages the reader from start to finish.

He’s a caring janitor and a whizz computer technician but is Micah obsessive?

His family make jokes about his highly ordered life but in return, Micah loves their mayhem. Then a teenager knocks on his door claiming to be Micah’s son with a long-lost girlfriend. It’s clear to Micah that he isn’t. But then the ex-girlfriend turns up and what do you think? Redhead by the Side of the Road is the title of Anne Tyler’s superb novel that tells Micah’s story. Human and gripping from first to last, it’s a wonderful tale of family life. But will the splendid Micah find a happy ending?

If you liked the film, you’ll love the novel based on it. If you don’t know the film then the novel will be the better for being a total surprise. Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is out in soft covers. Stuntman Cliff Booth, murderer? Rick Dalton, has been actor, or will a spaghetti western save him? Sharon Tate, slaughtered or not? Charles Manson, misunderstood? He just wants to be a rock star. It’s not the film, it’s more than the film, it’s an engrossing snapshot of Hollywood in 1969, a time of great change in the film industry, chronicled by a master.

MUSIC - PRESENT, PAST AND FUTURE Album of the Month Senjutsu by Iron Maiden (Parlophone Records)

album from 1982 your attention. Featuring three of their most iconic songs, Hallowed Be Thy Name, Run to the Hills (itself a Top 10 single) and the title track, it’s the best kind of assault on the senses.

There are certain genres that we don’t really talk about in this column and heavy metal is definitely high on that list, especially when made by a group who many consider to be almost four decades past their peak. But such is the brilliance of Senjutsu, Iron Maiden’s seventeenth studio album and first in six years, that we’re prepared to make an exception.

A large part of the reason for the album’s magnificence is that it is the first Maiden record to feature the vocals of Bruce Dickinson - dramatic, operatic and the perfect accompaniment to the similarly ambitious music. The injection of energy he brought to the band is immediately apparent on opening track Invader and the trademark Maiden rhythm section, hurtling along and dragging everything with them, is also fully developed from the start

2021 finds the band in an ideal position. Their place in metal history confirmed, and giant audiences across the globe always hungry to see their shows, they have the confidence and security to pursue and fully realise new ideas, no matter how ambitious. Here, that ambition manifests itself as a double album of only ten songs which is both epic in scope and patient in mood.

Song inspirations were similarly grand in scope, drawing from the conquest of the Native Americans, the TV show The Prisoner and the hanging of a convict, and frightening enough to horrify large swathes of the general public, further bolstering record sales.

The long track lengths allow each of them to build, flow, ebb and flow once more. Leading with the title track, Bruce Dickinson and gang are determined to follow every trickling tributary, happy to leave the mainstream of metal for altogether proggier waters. The Parchment starts stoically before providing space for each of Adrian Smith, Dave Murray and Janick Gers to lay down some serious guitar work. Death Of The Celts, with lyrics like, “The burden of blood, the breaketh of bone/The battlefield now I make it my own” is charmingly bombastic.

The Number of the Beast remains the pinnacle of Iron Maiden’s recording career and proof that they deserve their place alongside more fashionable metal icons such as Black Sabbath and Metallica.

GARDENING TIPS FROM HILARY BARBER In October, don’t be too hasty to tidy up the garden as seed heads and grasses create a lovely autumn/winter habitat for the wildlife in your garden. Do also create some piles of twigs and leaves in the back of borders for overwintering frogs or toads and, if you are lucky, a hedgehog!

Start to rake up leaves. You can put small quantities in a compost bin and mix them in well, but it is better to compost leaves on their own, to make leaf mould, a great soil improver and mulch 2. You can make a simple leaf mould bin with four posts and chicken wire. Alternatively, use biodegradable loose weave jute sacks (hessian), pack the leaves in tight and store them in a corner of the garden 3. Continue to plant spring bulbs such as daffodils, crocus, alliums, snowdrops and try to finish planting by the end of the month, with the exception of tulips. Tulips are best planted later, in November, to reduce the chance of tulip blight which breeds in warmer soils 4. If they have finished flowering, prune shrub roses by one third to prevent wind rock and breaking of the branches during the winter. Also prune climbing and rambling roses this month and tie in the stems before autumn winds cause any damage 5. Plant hardy trees, shrubs and climbers (especially clematis and wisteria) while the soil is still warm and moist. Give them a good mulch (see 10) If the weather is still clement, with no frosts forecast, you can also continue to plant perennials 6. Complete scarifying, aerating and top dressing to your lawn and apply autumn lawn feed before the end of the month.

Bristol 1904 Arts Society Announces

110th Annual Paintings Exhibition Bristol 1904 are excited to announce their 110th Annual Paintings Exhibition, open to the public free of charge, with the chance to buy members’ work. Traditionally held in May, but due to earlier COVID restrictions the Exhibition will now be held from 23rd - 30th October. This time around, Bristol 1904 will not only celebrate decades of creativity, but also the rebirth of their Society.

Founded in 1904 as Bristol Savages with artistic roots running deep into Bristol’s creative history, the Society has rebranded with a new name and new activities that more accurately portray current interests. This still includes the classic painting, music, magic, poetry, storytelling and fellowship.
