Our break in France reminded me of what a magically strange thing the human brain is. Not for the first time we hired a little car while were away, and as a driver back home of an automatic car this plunged me into huge potential confusion - sitting on the wrong side of the car but with pedals in the right order, with a manual gearbox that not only had to be used but used using the wrong hand, and driving along strange roads with strange signs while remembering to stay on the wrong side of the road, and go the wrong way around roundabouts. And all in front of an unforgiving French motoring audience. A recipe for stress? Maybe, but curiously it just comes naturally, as simple as.... - well simpler than trying each to work out a 5 letter word in 6 guesses with no audience or time-pressure. Wordle flummoxes me most days. For some stress-free easy fun my wierd old brain says give me driving abroad any day!

What next for the community centre from ‘The Outlaws’?

We have put together a five-question survey to make a clear case for what is needed in Sea Mills and Coombe Dingle. Please take a moment to fill it in on our website (QR code on photo) or fill in a paper version at Sea Mills Library by 1 September.

Many of you may have watched BBC’s ‘The Outlaws’ over the past few months – Stephen Merchant’s comedy crime drama based in Bristol. Sea Mills community centre featured prominently in the programme, but now there’s a question mark hanging over its future.

Initial feedback has shown that there is a revived community spirit in the area following the pandemic, and people would really value having a secular space to be able to gather for various activities. Suggestions include: sports & exercise classes, art & crafts, dance, music, drama, support groups, courses, a co-working space, celebrational and event hires.

At the end of June, local volunteers from the community group Sea Mills & Coombe Dingle Together (SMCDT) held a wellattended meeting at Sea Mills Library. The original aim was to start a conversation about what kind of community facilities local people would like to see. The centre has been closed since 2019, and we wanted to get a feel for how much interest there was to restore and re-open it – mirroring the storyline of ‘The Outlaws’.

As a community group, we are also looking for volunteers who could help us with this project, and develop other projects and events across Sea Mills and Coombe Dingle. The meeting was joined by a representative from the Council’s Housing Development Team, who came along to introduce the Council’s intention to develop the site. News that the existing centre could be demolished naturally raised a lot of questions. Right now, feasibility underway for a mixed use development comprising affordable housing and a new community space. SMCDT feel strongly that any feasibility study should also include an investigation into the viability of the existing building to see if it could be sustainably retro-fitted and re-opened. However, if any development does go ahead, it’s essential that the Council are made fully aware of the needs of the local community so that any new facility is fully fit for purpose.

Bristol Zoo Gardens: A Big Summer SendOff to remember

all take to save wildlife together. Part silent disco, part storytelling adventure, the show has been inspired by the next chapter of Bristol Zoo’s story and encourages children to get wild themselves with dancing, games and lots of fun for the whole family.

As you make plans for the summer, make space in your diary for one final visit to Bristol Zoo Gardens. After more than 185 years, the iconic attraction will be closing on September 3 ahead of the creation of a new Bristol Zoo at its Wild Place Project site. Before the gates close for one final time, the team at Bristol Zoo Gardens are marking the final opening weeks with a send-off to remember. From July 21, the BIG Summer Send-Off gets underway, inviting visitors to take a walk down memory lane, make new unforgettable memories, and look to the future.

The BIG Summer Send-Off will also feature a Past, Present and Future outdoor exhibition on Bristol Zoo Gardens’ historic top terrace. Running along the main parade, the exhibition will include poems, pictures and heartfelt words to create a history of the Zoo made by its visitors. The team behind the impressive installation is Bakehouse Factory – a multi-awardwinning theatrical events company in Bristol, which is also organising and managing the Zoo’s Big Summer Send-Off programme. The BIG Summer Send-Off runs from July 21 to Bristol Zoo Gardens’ last day of opening on September 3. Visitors can join in the celebrations by purchasing standard entry tickets. The family theatre show, ‘Into the Wild’, will require an additional ticket purchase of just £5 each to cover the hire of a headset. Other activities which form part of the final celebrations are The Zoo and You Poetry and Story Competition, The Wall of Memories and Live Legacy Art. And of course the main attractions are the 300 species of animals, including the troop of western lowland gorillas, the red pandas, sloths and penguins, the Aquarium and Bug World.

The centrepiece of Bristol Zoo Gardens’ summer celebrations is a huge moving gorilla made of wood. The speciallycommissioned sculpture, which is taller than the largest giraffe ever recorded, and as wide as three king size beds, will sit tall on the main lawn. Clad in sustainable wood, the installation will captivate visitors with surprise movements throughout the day, as the female gorilla, named ‘Wilder’, ‘eats’ lettuce. She will also reveal details that will delight unsuspecting guests – her baby ‘Monty Alan’, a name inspired by the national park in Equatorial Guinea where the Bristol Zoological Society works to protect western lowland gorillas in the wild. Weighing more than four tonnes, the sculpture has been made from 180 square metres of local yew, cedar, pine and oak, generously donated by Westonbirt Arboretum.

Tickets for the BIG Summer Send-Off and the theatre show ‘Into the Wild’ are now available to purchase on Bristol Zoo Gardens’ website www.bristolzoo.org.uk. Bristol Zoo Gardens will be open to the public until it closes on 3 September 2022, before the new Bristol Zoo is created at the charity’s Wild Place Project site. You also get to hear the imaginative nicknames the players have for each other. For example, Gloucestershire’s captain Ryan Higgins, who was referred to by everything from “Higg” to “Higger” to “Higgy” throughout his team’s stint in the field.

Feeling like I hadn’t been making the most of freelance life, I decided to treat myself to a day at the Seat Unique Stadium, home of Gloucestershire County Cricket Club. Less than an hour on foot from BS9 to the ground on Nevil Road, I arrived in time to see the start of the second day of Gloucestershire versus Lancashire in a County Championship tussle. The first thing that strikes you is just how few spectators there are in attendance, especially during the m o r n i n g session. This isn’t the stand-packing action of a big bash, super smash, monster mash T20 match, this is real cricket. There are definite pros and cons. Best of all is the fact that you’re free to sit wherever you like, whether that’s plastic seats in the stands, or wooden seats and benches positioned next to the boundary. The choice is very much yours. There’s also a tremendous feeling of community among both the staff and those who have come down for the day.

One big downside, especially for those of us of slightly nervous dispositions, is the feeling that you could actually put the players off. It’s not just the typical no-no’s all cricket spectators need to be aware of, like walking in front of the sightscreen. In such sedate surroundings, opening a packet of crisps felt like a potential act of sabotage that might unfairly sway the match. What of the cricket itself – in some ways the least important part of the day? Particular highlights included Gloucestershire’s Zafar Gohar smashing a six to bring up his 50, Tom Price bowling Lancs opener Luke Wells for 3 with the first ball after lunch, and an imperious innings from their other opener Keaton Jennings, eventually falling just short of his 100 on 94.

Market Comment Asked what he thought would define his premiership, Prime Minister Harold McMillan famously replied, “Events, dear boy, events”. It is much the same with the property market. Events largely control turnover and turnover affects prices - up or down. There are major events like world wars and global pandemics and inconvenient events like fuel and food shortages, interest rate hikes and cost of living rises. But it might surprise you to learn that the events which so often drive the property market are not global or even national: they are personal. These events are births, deaths, beginning cohabitation or ending cohabitation, stage of life changes, ambition, career success and career failure. These everyday events create a need or desire to move on or move in. Personal events will always be with us no matter what is going on in the world or which government is in power. When a government – any government – dabbles in the property market, the result is usually a massive hangover once the policy party is over. So, the market is best left to home buyers, sellers and renters. Right now, the sales market seems to be in a state of zero gravity. We are floating between price rises and price drops, as the lack of property for sale is counteracted by the rising cost of living, garnished with some pretty momentous global news. With the rental market, we are left wondering whether the sacking of Michael Gove and Boris’ subsequent resignation last week, will influence the timeline and proposals of the Renters’ Reform Bill. Only time will tell. So, what is important in a confusing property market? Put it this way; if you wait for global or national events to stabilise, you will wait a long time. BRUCE FELLOWS’ BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS Andrea Camilleri’s Riccardino, billed as the final Montalbano mystery, is another enjoyable romp around the inspector’s Sicilian home town. Not enjoyable for Riccardino though, since after waking Salvo up with a phone call at 3 am, he is immediately gunned down in front of his two lifelong friends by a helmeted motor cyclist. The friends cannot assist although they saw the crime. There’s the usual efficient help from Fazio, interference from above, glamorous ladies to interview, wonderful food to enjoy vicariously and also a salt mine and a bishop, even an appearance by the author - all highly entertaining. What a shame it’s the last. The sixties: if you can remember them, you weren’t there. Luckily for us, Rosemary Tonks wrote her scintillating novel The Bloater at the time, so she has no memory problems. Min works with Jenni at the BBC in groundbreaking radio-phonics. Carlos, the bloater of the title, is just one of the chaps revolving around Min, who’s married to George, so unmemorable that she once shut him in the kitchen while he was still eating. There’s also Fritz, her cleaner; Geordi, probably gay; and Billy, a much more promising prospect. With great characters and sparkling dialogue, this is a brilliant and always entertaining comedy of manners. Sarah Jane is an efficient small-town cop but how did she get there from her Tennessee/Alabama origins? James Sallis tells us in his noirish thriller. Running away from her father, as her mother already has, it’s a short step, via a kindly judge, from petty crime to the army and consequent trauma in Iraq. She lands back stateside and flips burgers in greasy spoons till the sheriff she’s been helping out disappears and she takes over. Who was he? Why did he disappear? Sarah Jane struggles to understand and to make sense of her own life too in this terrific, dramatic and sometimes heartbreaking novel. In the Shadows of Castles, the gripping second volume of local author GK Holloway’s 1066 Saga, takes us back to the early days of the Conquest. William, newly crowned King of England, must consolidate his victory as the English dispute his right to reign. Bandi and Whitgar, English patriots, fall in love with two sisters and we criss-cross the country with them as William reacts in brutal fashion, destroying towns, massacring inhabitants and building castles to overawe the English. Will love and hope survive in these dreadful times? This is an imaginative, often nail-biting novel and highly informative of a crucial period in English history. Monsieur Ka, Vesna Goldsworthy’s fascinating and riveting novel features a huge literary ‘what if’. What if Tolstoy’s great novel ‘Anna Karenina’ was based on a real family and further, that the heroine’s son was alive and living in post-war London during the frozen winter of early 1947? Albertine, married to Albie, a career soldier, is our route into this intriguing situation. She takes a job reading in French to Anna Karenina’s now aged son and comes to learn about his post-novel life. But there’s Albertine’s own story too, complicated and tragic. Rich in incident and character, this is a wonderful novel, not to be missed.

The Westbury on Trym Show will once again be show-casing the interests and talents of local people at the Village Hall on Saturday 3rd September. Doors will be open to members of the public at 11am and the presentation of trophies will be at 4.30p.m.

There are a number of classes for children and young people, including cookery, art, craft, colouring, handwriting and photography. Of note are two classes - the Arthur Brice Young Gardener for the Future Trophy; once again it will be awarded for the best children’s living garden in a 2 litre ice cream tub, and a desert (not a dessert! ) on a dinner plate. The schedules contain lots of ideas for creative minds and keeping children entertained during the summer holidays!

This year, the show is celebrating ‘100 Years of the BBC’ so a number of the classes will be aligned to this theme. Briony May, a semifinalist in the 2018 BBC series of the Great British Bake Off and Bristol resident, will be opening the show. Her more recent TV appearances have included Escape to the Country, Food Unwrapped, Would I Lie to You? and Celebrity Mastermind. Briony is not a stranger to the Westbury Show as, in the past, she has been an entrant herself!

Delicious hot meals, sandwiches, cream teas and cakes, a BBQ and an ice-cream stall will be on sale. The gardens will be full of stalls and attractions for all ages and interests; these include Bristol Bee Keepers, We Make Bristol, Country Markets, WOT Allotment Society and a plant stall.

The Hall will be full of impressive displays of fruit, vegetables, flowers, cookery, art, crafts and photography to name but a few! For the first time SusWoT (Sustainable Westbury on Trym) are sponsoring a video class. People are invited to submit a clip lasting up to two minutes, the theme of which is ‘Natural History in Westbury & the River Trym’. Bill Long, our ‘Town Crier’, will be keeping everyone informed about what is happening, so look out for him in his regalia on the day! Bartees Strange was born in Ipswich to an Air Force father and opera-singer mother. Like many military children, he spent much of his early life moving from place to place, both around Europe and back in the States. Settling in Mustang, Oklahoma, Strange balanced his own love of opera music and post-hardcore, eventually moving to Brooklyn and joining the band Stay Inside.

Next Step Relationship of Command by At The Drive-In A key event in the life of Bartees Strange was seeing At The Drive-In live. His first gig witnessing a rock band that weren’t all-white had a profound effect on him, pointing the way to a career in music. We’d be foolish not to pick such low hanging fruit as this month’s next step, especially fruit this juicy.

It should therefore come as no surprise that Strange’s solo music doesn’t stay in the same lane for too long. Having wowed critics and fans with his genre-hopping 2020 album Live Forever, he now returns with Farm to Table, a collection of songs informed by his family and friends, and their part in his journey so far.

Released in 2000, Relationship of Command is the third and mightiest offering from the El Paso post-hardcore group. It’s an adrenalinefuelled gut buster of an album that’s packed with anthems from start to finish. It also contains One Armed Scissor, the definitive song in their armoury. With its giant riffs, bold dynamic shifts and Cedric Bixler’s fervent vocal delivery, it’s the perfect embodiment of the entire genre.

That thematic thread allows Strange to explore many different styles across the album’s ten tracks. Hanging from the same bracelet, each song is a charm that makes sense both on their own and together. Opening track Heavy Heart discusses Strange’s guilt about how hard his dad had to work all his life and how often he himself leaves his own family behind when he’s out on tour. The sunburst indie suggests that better times are ahead and such weight doesn’t have to drown you.

Vlog Of The Month Justin Hawkins Rides Again Justin Hawkins Rides Again find the Darkness frontman discussing specific bands, songs and the state of the music industry. There are two factors that make it such an enjoyable listen/ watch. Firstly, Hawkins is a gifted presenter who is full of positivity and humour. Even when talking about music he’s clearly not a natural fan of, he’s always searching for the good within. Of equal importance is his deep understanding of how songs are constructed and an ability to break them down into their component pieces. Watching episodes on ubiquitous hits like The White Stripes’ Seven Nation Army, it’s amazing what you can still learn.

Elsewhere, Wretched is a ginormous EDM anthem, albeit one in which Strange questions his right to do well while others are suffering. That electronic vibe spills over to Cosigns, the other side of the coin on which Strange stops to take a look at how far he’s come, mentioning some of the other musicians (Phoebe Bridgers, Courtney Barnett, Justin Vernon) he’s now sharing a table with. The closing trio of songs. Escape This Circus, Black Gold, and Hennessy show how adept Strange is at finding the right sound to tell his story. In turn, melancholy country to discuss the lack of hope in the world, an alt-pop ballad paying homage to where he’s come from, and a soul jam over which he lays bare his

HISTORY NOTES NO. 173 - JULIAN LEA-JONES A sad day for Henleaze and a much missed figure

was shown that had been presented to him by the Korova Record Company to commemorate sales of 60,000 of Echo & The Bunnymen’s third album ‘Porcupine’. His artistic talent was recognised at a very early age by his Art Master at St Mary’s Roman Catholic Secondary School, Northamptonshire, Christopher Fiddes, who nurtured him and encouraged to him go on to Northampton School of Art. Whilst there he became a lead member of a club known as the Thursday Group, and one of their notable achievementswas a thirty-foot mural depicting the history of Earl’s Barton. Initially prepared at the request of the vicar of the Saxon church, to mark its thousand-year history, the mural (Earl Barton’s equivalent of the Bayeux Tapestry?) can still be seen in their village hall.

Kit Edwardes, a well-known and popular sight in Henleaze, sadly died on the 24th of April 2022. His full name was Christopher Vincent James Edwardes, and he was born on January 20th 1952 in Wellingborough, Northamptonshire. Kit was one of six children to Nora Edwardes. He had a twin brother Andy, and older brother Robin and three sisters, Angela, Katie and Dorothy. In Henleaze he will be remembered, even by those who didn’t know him personally, for his friendliness and sartorial elegance. It was unusual to see him in the same regalia twice. He had over one hundred suits, ranging from Scottish kilts to pinstriped business suits, complete with bowler hat and silver topped cane. His outfits were always absolutely, (as Jermyn Street), shop-window perfect. Possibly his joy of dressing-up dated from his days in the 1980s, when he modelled for Barbour which featured in the ‘This is Bristol and Bath’ magazine. Others in Bristol also knew him as a talented artist. In the 1980s he’d had exhibitions in the Arnolfini, Bristol Museum and Art Gallery, the Watershed and even as far away Manchester and in Australia at Sydney’s Artspace Gallery.

Kit went from there to the Northampton College of Art, during which time he won a scholarship to Camberwell College of Art. Christopher Fiddes added that in over thirty years of teaching thousands of pupils, Kit was his most promising student, and he felt that his work could have been on a par with the old masters. After completing his degree year, Kit qualified for a further scholarship to the Royal College of Art at South Kensington, however tragedy struck with the death of his twin brother Andrew, ‘Andy’. After living in Howden, Yorkshire, Kit and his partner settled in Bristol where they were reunited with a former school friend who was also involved with the pop group and had moved into the film world. The result was that that Kit joined them and moved into the Bristol Old Vic’s school house in Coldharbour Road, Redland which, for a reason known only to themselves, was cal led The Palace, (compared to student digs perhaps)?

However, Kit was much, much more than just these roles. A complex character, he had led a rich and active life. I wonder how many people know that he had been a roadie for the hugely successful pop group Echo and the Bunnymen, accompanying them on world tours? He had also been involved with their pop contemporaries Teardrop Explodes, as well as appearing in two films. At his funeral, which took place at Westerleigh Crematorium, a plaque 37

and included memories of joyful shared events. The eulogies gave insights into Kit’s exploits and aspects of his life that many never knew.

It was during this time in Bristol that he also became a passionate cyclist, with a group of friends who called themselves the ‘Hardly Athletic’. The Nova Scotia Pub in Cumberland Basin was their meeting point, from where they used to cycle to Weston-Super-Mare, with some trips up to one hundred miles. Daniel Day Lewis in his early acting days was sometimes one of their number, but Kit’s friend Lew Gardener was his cycling partner for forty years and at the funeral, gave one of the eulogies and read a poem. With busy main roads and a pack of about thirty cyclists, spills sometimes happened and on one occasion the domino effect meant they all, including Kit, went down. Most mishaps were minor, and they were able to remount and continue, but one involving a car, left Kit unconscious needing hospitalisation.

I have been grateful to his sister Katie and Ella and friends for providing me with the information that has made this brief account of Kit’s rich and varied life possible. His good humour, friendship, and of course his zaniness touched everyone he came in contact with. Lastly, an unusual aspect of Kit’s funeral, was the replacement of the standard polished wood coffin with a gloriously painted and completely covered, decorated floral coffin. A thought that lifted the spirits. The service ended with the ‘Voice Squad’ rendition of a traditional Scottish song ‘The Parting Glass’. Goodbye Kit, we all miss you.

Sadly, in recent years although he continued his love of painting figurative art, and was able to pass on his skills to others in art classes at Stoke Lodge, he succumbed to illness. Diagnosed with cancer meant he had to give up his flat and was found sheltered accommodation. Thanks to his girlfriend Ella, it was still in the same neighbourhood, and she was able to nurse him in his last illness. Such was Kit’s enduring popularity that at his funeral the chapel was packed to bursting with his lifelong friends, many of whom had travelled long distances to give their final goodbyes. Suffice to say his service took over an hour, as in addition to the service there were eight eulogies. Kit’s son Tom’s was very moving

21ST CENTURY MYSTERIES What’s this about video content?

Some of the 21st century mysteries that we’ve looked at so far are genuinely new and baffling inventions of the modern world. This month we’re turning out attention to a muchloved symbol of British life that has quietly going about its business for 182 years, that is until someone decided it’s time to shake things up. That’s right, we’re talking about postage stamps. What’s this all about then?

By downloading the Royal Mail app you can attach additional video content to the post you send. An early example of this has been provided by Bristol’s own Aardman Animations. By scanning the stamp’s barcode into the app, senders can select exclusive Shaun the Sheep videos that can then be attached to the barcode and viewed by the recipient of your post.

You may have already seen the new stamps as they have been in circulation since February. Though they look largely similar, there’s no missing the giant barcode that’s now attached to them; a barcode that many philatelists are worried will eventually take over the entire space of their beloved stamp.

Eventually it will be possible to attach personalised videos and send messages on birthday and other occasions. So in future, as well as receiving your red bills through the mail, you might also expect a video from an angry debt collector explaining exactly what will happen if you don’t settle what is due!

It’s worth noting that some stamps will remain un-barcoded. These include special stamps with decorative pictures and Christmas stamps. It is the stamps that feature the profile of Her Majesty the Queen on a plain coloured background that have been modernised.

Will old un-barcoded stamps be wasted? The deadline to use up any non-barcoded stamps is 31 January 2023. This does not apply to special stamps with pictures on and Christmas stamps. If you reach the deadline and still have non-barcoded stamps, you can exchange them for the barcoded ones through the Royal Mail “Stamp Swap Out” scheme. The scheme opened on 31 March this year and allows you to swap out non-barcoded stamps. To do this you need to download and print the relevant form, depending on whether you wish to swap more or less than £200 worth of non-barcoded stamps. The form must be completed and returned, with the old stamps, to Royal Mail.

Do these new barcodes have a useful purpose?

Can I use non-barcoded stamps after 31 January 2023?

The official answer, according to the Royal Mail, is that these barcodes will help, “to facilitate operational efficiencies, enable the introduction of added security features and pave the way for innovative services for customers.” The important thing is that they are intended to help Royal Mail stop counterfeiting and enable the tracking of all letters to improve efficiency. They also provide the sender with the ability to attach video content to their barcoded stamp.

This is an easy one to answer… no you cannot. Essentially, using an old stamp after that date is the same as not paying for postage at all and your recipient will therefore incur standard charges. We fully recommend that you head over to royalmail.com/sending/barcoded-stamps to find out all the latest information and download the relevant forms.

Top Tips for Separated Parents Navigating the Summer Holidays The warm summer days are coming quickly upon us and many families will be preparing to go on their annual summer Samantha Hickman holiday. Airport chaos aside, making arrangements to spend time with your children if you are separated from the child’s other parent can be tricky. Getting it wrong could result in serious legal consequences, including allegations of child abduction or child trafficking. Whilst we don’t promise to alleviate all the stresses that come with planning a holiday with your children, we have set out below our list of top tips to help deal with some of the tricky issues. 1. Plan Early Discussions between separated parents can be difficult, particularly when discussions involve taking a child out of the country. Booking a holiday will come with great expense so it is important that plans are made early to avoid any unnecessary cancellations. It is important that both parents and the children are fully on board and feel comfortable with the arrangements that have been made. If possible, involve the children and other parent in the planning process. 2. Make Sure You Have Consent to Travel Any person wishing to travel abroad with a child must ensure that they have

specific authority from anyone with Parental Responsibility to travel. Ideally you should get consent in writing so that you can present this as evidence if consent is disputed or questioned at a later date. If the other parent will not agree, you must seek permission from the court. If you have a Child Arrangement’s Order in place that states your child lives with you, you can take your child out of the UK for up to 28 days without the permission of the other parent or the Court. If you fail to obtain permission, you could find yourself accused of ‘child abduction’ and an order could be made for the immediate return of the child. 3. Get Your Documentation in Order Properly documented travel agreements and plans are essential. You should include information regarding your travel schedule, names of those travelling with you, information regarding your proposed methods of transport, accommodation information, contact details and other key details about your trip. This approach provides clarity for both parties and seeks to elevate any concerns for the other parent. If you are the travelling parent, you need to make sure that you are in receipt of the child’s passport in plenty of time and have copies of any other documents relating to your child which may be useful. For example, any medical notes

(where applicable) and a copy of your child’s birth certificate (if your child has a different surname). We also recommend that you keep a copy of written permission (from the other parent or court order) which allows you to legally travel with your child. 4. Get Legal Advice If You Cannot Agree Please do get in touch with one of our specialist family lawyers if you are unable agree matters between you. There are various options available to try and resolve the issue, ranging from mediation to issuing an application to the court for a decision to be made by a judge.

TALKING PETS WITH VIKING VETS Goodbye to a faithful friend

straight away, settled in the bed that had been made ready for her, and keen to eat whatever was offered. She has been a very healthy dog (kept slim against her will). As she was aging she ended up with arthritis and kidney issues, but we have managed to keep her as comfortable as possible over the last year.

I have been a vet for nearly 30 years, and have had to put many dogs to sleep. I regard this as not only a privilege, but also the most important part of my job to get right. As a dog owner myself, I know how big a part these furry friends mean to us all. For some people it may be the only being they will spend the majority of their time with. They listen without arguing. They love unconditionally. They are there come rain or shine. They get us out of bed when we would rather wallow in self pity. They help us meet other people. They reduce our risk of heart disease. They help us recover quicker from surgery. They help children learn to care for others. They help the blind navigate the world. They help the police catch criminals, and the list goes on.

It is very difficult to decide when the right time is to put a dog to sleep when you have a very slow decline in quality of life. When you know your dog, you can see the tiredness, the lack of interest in all that gave her joy, even the treats became uninteresting. It is then time to let her pass away into an endless sleep. Our lovely Ruby passed away surrounded by love with the taste of Parma ham on her lips. We will miss her, but the memories lives on forever.

That string after the question mark is a set of tracking parameters. It feeds information about you to sites so they can keep tabs on user behavior. For example, they might want to know where traffic came from, like if it was through Twitter or a newsletter. It’s a quiet but pervasive way your privacy gets undermined while online, and Firefox now has baked-in protection from it.

When it comes to choosing which web browser to use, there’s not a lot to choose between Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, Firefox and Apple Safari. I prefer Firefox as it’’s independent and more focussed on data privacy and it’s just introduced a nifty new feature to further stop unwanted tracking.

With the update to version 102, Firefox now automatically strips tracking parameters from some URLs, including those shared on Facebook. It won’t cover all the sites you might visit during the normal course of a day but it’s a welcome privacy addition.

You know how when you copy some links, the URL turns out to be insanely long? You might recognize the first part of the URL as a normal link, but everything that comes after it is just a Byzantine collection of letters, numbers, and symbols. When a company starts out, as long as it has 2 or more shareholders, an agreement should be considered. Over time, new shareholders may join the business or the roles of the shareholders may evolve. These are just 2 examples of when a need may arise for reviewing and updating an existing agreement.

Drafting shareholders’ agreements Shareholders’ agreements should be carefully drafted and tailored to meet the bespoke requirements for the Company. This will ensure everyone’s rights and obligations are clear, allow the company to operate effectively and minimise the potential for disputes.

Shareholder disputes A shareholders’ agreement cannot prevent a dispute arising between shareholders but it set out the mechanics for what should happen in the event of a dispute or even define certain actions that could make a shareholder a compulsory leaver. Shareholders agreements can set out a dispute resolution procedure which shareholders must follow before disputes are escalated.

So if one partner, say, contributed £40,000 by way of a cash contribution to the purchase of the property and the balance of the purchase price was raised by way of a joint mortgage (say £60,000) which was paid by the other partner a court could implied that the the intentions of the partners was that property should be owned by them in shared proportion to their contributions.

Where two people cohabit in a property owned by just one of them does the nonowning partner acquire an interest in the property as a result of contributing towards the outgoings of the property - for instance the mortgage? There have been a number of cases where unmarried partners have fallen out and an issue has arisen as to whether the partner who is not the legal owner of the property can claim an interest in it as a result of contributions they have made. These can include contributions to the mortgage.

The way to avoid these issues is to have a “cohabitation agreement” setting out precisely what the individuals concerned intended. The agreement should say that your partner has your permission to live in the property without paying rent but not having a tenancy and that in return he will make whatever contributions to the mortgage you agree.

Essentially, the courts have to decide whether there was an implied agreement by which in return for making, for example, contributions to the mortgage, the partner of the owner would acquire an interest in the property.

You can go into much more detail as to exactly who will pay for what. It is sensible instruct a solicitor to draft a cohabitation agreement. The solicitor cannot not act for both you and your partner – your partner would have to be advised of his rights to take independent legal advice.
