So, the shortest month of the year is with us, and like many a third rate celebrity it has changed its name to appear more attractive than some people think it is. Before we adopted the Latin name for our second month, Old English used much more colourful and descriptive names to describe the month now known as February. The most common Old English name was Solmonath, which literally means “mud month”, but my favourite was a lesser-used name - Kale-monath - which meant “cabbage month.” Hardly a mediafriendly name though, hence the change under the ever-trendy Romans to February, which comes from the Roman festival of purification called Februa, during which people were ritually washed. On second thoughts I think I prefer the month of the brassica.

Fans of the River Avon will, I am sure, be delighted to see the return of the tide times on page 26. After my initial error last month, in ordering the wrong volume of timetables from the UK Hydrographic Office, things got worse when my order for the correct set got mixed with an order, on the same day, for another Andy Fraser and I received his set of nautical charts for Carmarthen Bay and a pair of course plotting dividers. No use to a landlubber like me, but at least my namesake can navigate his way into the Cumberland Basin should he choose to sail over from west Wales. Thankfully I now have the right volume so normal service is resumed.

THIS BS9 LIFE - DUNCAN HASKELL Armed with smart phones, smart watches, smart speakers, tablets, sat navs, and innumerable other devices that are designed to make life easier, I sometimes wonder if I’m slowly losing the ability to think for myself and if I’ve tuned out of all those natural signs that help point the way. Could the rhythms of life in and beyond BS9 provide everything I need? I’m certain that I don’t need a calendar, smart or otherwise. One example is the boom of fireworks signalling the arrival of November, their intermittent rumblings continuing until their final New Year’s hurrah. Fox-mating season, complete with its own haunting sounds, then brings us to the middle of February – Reynard’s dwindling libido meaning better sleep all round.
It’s not only the sounds. The arrival of snow drops, wild garlic, garden blossom and bluebells all take their turn to welcome in the warmer weather and signal the passage of time. The shed petals left by the explosion of rhododendron in the woods above the Blaise estate act as a red carpet for the summer. The area’s bird life too can be just as reliable – in particular the visiting fieldfare whose consolations begin to grow from the end of October each year. Tuning into human behaviour also helps. The noise of multiple bins being dragged out signals every Wednesday evening (thrown off by the occasional bank holiday roster). Even without children, it’s easy to know when the school holidays have begun; the test being whether it’s possible to cross Canford Lane on foot without having to wait 5 minutes for a gap in the traffic – to confirm, check the happy faces of everyone waiting for a bus, safe in the knowledge that their daily commute has been halved. I’m now looking for other ways to remove my reliance on technology. I recently calculated that the perfect poached egg takes me 3 minutes 40 seconds to cook (I’m still undecided whether or not to add vinegar to the water). All I need to do now is work out a walk that takes me that exact amount of time, including time needed to put shoes on and open the door, from the hob to a memorable landmark outside and back to the hob again. If I master that I can live a timer-free existence. This tech-free life, I think I’ve cracked it.

THE JOY OF YUUP As youngsters, didn't we all have ambitions? When we grew up we wanted to be this or that - a train driver, a famous writer, a comedian, a chef and so on. Of course a very few made it, and their dreams came true through perseverence, luck or just grabbing that once in a lifetime oppportunity. For the majority though they remain just that dreams. When we are young, birthday and Christmas presents tend to be "things" - gifts that can be wrapped. Things that (usually) provided instant gratification - short term fun creating short term memories. In other words "Stuff". And that is fine - who doesn't remember getting their first bike, or hamster or Lego Death Star? But as we get older we realise that, in many respects, we've moved on - as one friend put it "we've got enough stuff". I'm sure we've all experienced it - scratching our heads when trying to think of what to get our sister, mum and so on for their birthday when they've got all they want and need. Thankfully though something has come to our rescue - something driven by technology, entrepreneurial spirit and, going back to my intial observation, our propensity to dream. The Experience. The computer generation has grown up now, and we have reached an age when we have enough stuff, we have (to a certain degree) disposable income, and we still have that desire to dream. And technology, coupled with forward thinking busineses and clever marketing, is providing us with memorable ways of fulfilling those dreams. Now there is a whole world of opportunity for us to "have a go", "try our hand at" and do things because "I've always wanted to do that". OK, so for the vast majority of us we're not yet able to experience being a spaceman or a professional tennis player. But if we want to drive a racing car, make sushi in a professional kitchen, animate

The beauty of being such a small group was that a) we could all easily watch Alison's demonstration, and b) she was able to move around the table giving us one-to-one guidance as we all practised our technique. I suspect I had more than my fair share of guidance.
PS - back in the 70's I remember that come Christmas or birthday certain relatives, bereft of gift ideas, would send me and my sister gift tokens, usually for £5 to spend in either Boots or WH Smith. They were very welcome of course, but didn't grant us access to a quad bike safari or a pottery masterclass. As we've seen, times have changed - but if you are still unsure after working your way through the Yuup choices you can still send a gift voucher. Many things in fact, all local, all interesting experiences. We whittled the list down to a fun pottery workshop, a magic masterclass and a calligraphy experience.
After a short coffee break we reconvened for a pen and ink demonstration using a traditional nib and calligraphers ink - we had initially used modern fibre-tipped calligraphy pens - and also a brief look at quills. Turns out swan feathers are not that easy to get hold of. In professional hands the traditional pen and ink script provided a much more satisfying level of crispness and clarity. We then had a go ourselves with pen and ink - and in unprofessional hands it proved far more taxing and unforgiving.
In the end we plumped for the calligraphy being in the art shop on Park Street it was super convenient - booked ourselves in through the Yuup website and before we knew it we were sat with four other budding calligraphers - Maggie, Emmeline, Rosalie and Amy - and our guide for the afternoon Alison.
All in all our afternoon of calligraphic tuition was great fun, incredibly relaxing, interesting and a very different and enjoyable way to spend an afternoon. So thanks to Alison for her time, skill and patience, and if you fancy a go then hop on to the Yuup website.

Executors – Choosing Correctly Is More Important than You Might Think

When drafting your Will, choosing your executors is a key decision and one which is not always given sufficient thought. The ultimate remedy for choosing the wrong executor can mean a costly court application for their removal, so choosing wisely is important.
What Does an Executor Do? Executors are responsible for administering your estate after you die. This involves: • • • • • •
identifying and gathering in all the assets paying off any outstanding debts such as credit cards and mortgages reporting to HMRC and calculating any inheritance tax, as well as any capital gains and income taxes if applicable obtaining the Grant of Probate advertising for any creditors producing detailed estate accounts and making distributions according to your Will
These tasks can quickly become onerous, time-consuming and complicated particularly if other issues arise, such as a claim being brought against the estate. Beware Wearing Two Hats Executors also have to be careful not to fall into the trap of unwittingly or otherwise promoting their own interests if they are also beneficiaries under the Will. Take this common example: The son of the deceased is the executor and entitled under the Will to a half share of his parent’s house. He wants to purchase the house. His brother, who is not an executor,

inherits the other half under the Will. The executor brother needs to ensure that he purchases his brother’s half at the highest price that he could otherwise sell it for on the open market. If he does not, or deliberately tries to purchase at an undervalue, he is breaching his duties as executor and could ultimately be removed and held personally liable for the financial losses to the estate. Traps like these are easy for innocent executors to fall into sometimes without realising. But the role of executor can also offer opportunities for executors with less integrity to potentially exploit. It is therefore vital to choose the right person(s) who have the required expertise and judgement. How Should You Choose? People often think that choosing friends or family members will be less expensive than a professional. Lay executors do not charge for their time but many will instruct solicitors to administer the estate on their behalf anyway, which often results in similar levels of costs to appointing a professional in the first place. If you particularly want a certain friend or family member to be executor but also want the expertise of a professional, it does not have to be a binary choice and in some cases it can be advantageous to choose a combination of both. In deciding, some key factors to consider are:
•
Bereavement – Lay executors are often mourning the loss of a relative or friend at the same time as managing administrative executor’s duties. By choosing a professional, this emotional complication is removed.
•
Technicalities – Professionals are well equipped to deal with complicated trusts and tax-related matters. The more complex an estate, the more the chance that a lay executor may find themselves instructing experienced advisors in any event.
•
Disputes - If there is a prospect of a dispute arising on your death between family members then a professional executor will be equipped to deal with this, whereas a lay executor may be a party to the dispute themselves and struggle to stay neutral or to deal with the added complexities of resolving a family dispute.

FINANCE MATTERS - PHIL JAMES, GROSVENOR CONSULTANCY Financial Planning - Tips for the Future As I said last month I have seen a definite increase over the past couple of years of people taking stock of their personal and financial arrangements. People’s circumstances have changed; sometimes through choice, sometimes not. There has undoubtedly been a great deal of soul searching, people have reflected on their futures, some have made changes and many have identified priorities and asked for my help in making them happen. It’s interesting to me that in the past this ‘taking stock’ has often occurred around the beginning of a new year, or after a milestone birthday, but 2020 and 2021 was quite different. It felt to me that people had much greater clarity about their objectives and rather than procastinate on them, they have taken decisive action. At the heart of what I do, sits peoples life events. You can’t help people financially, without first understanding the person. It might be identifying why they are losing sleep, what’s making them worry. Sometimes, simply quantifying this ‘worry’ with people (using cashflow modelling), provides enormous help as they realise that the reality is not as bad as they thought. I’ve often said, we are told we live from one crises to another, but often key elements of our futures are still within our own control. Sometimes however the reverse is true and people have much greater risk in their arrrangements than they realised, a case where the reality needs corrective action. More a case of blissful ignorance to risk, perhaps. Often I am spending time with people looking forward. Helping people plan for the futures, helping them achieve their objectives and these might be over the coming year or two or as often the case around retirement planning, much longer term. One area of advice that has changed for me over the past decade or more as pension freedoms became a reality, is helping people while they are in those retirement years. Quite often the objectives people have in retirement change, particularly in the early years and I have always said, the ceasing of work is a significant life event and taking a year or two to work out
where priorities are, is no bad thing. Flexibility of assets is key in these cases. So, taking all this into account as we progress into 2022 , if you havent been ‘taking stock’ over the past year or two maybe now is the time to: REVIEW – your debt levels, existing expenditure, existing arrangements, tax effciency of your arrangements and making sure you are using the tax reliefs available to each and every one of us. PROTECT – recognise the importance of an emergency fund, what would happen to your income, capital and tax position in the event of illness, or events outside your control, or to your dependents in the event of your death. PLAN – Putting a plan of action together to give you the best chance to achieve your objectives, reducing costs, maximising growth, being tax efficient. IMPLEMENT and REVIEW – Naturally a plan has to be actioned, but then of course reviewed to accommodate changes over time both personal and financial. This is a typical process I go through with all financial planning clients and hopefully will continue to do so for many years to come. Finally, a note to Bristol Nine readers. I have been writing a monthly editorial for 10 years now, and have decided to take a break from doing so. I hope in amongst some 100 articles there have been one or two helpful suggestions to readers. Lasting Powers of Attorney - The Pitfalls of Instructions and Preferences for your Attorneys.
important to be aware of the distinction between instructions and preferences. Instructions are things that the attorney must do, whereas preferences are things that the donor would like the attorney to do or consider. Despite the aim of assisting the attorney with decision making, if not thought through and included in the LPAs with care, instructions and/or preference can sometimes cause problems and conflict with other parts of the LPA. This can lead to the Office of the Public Guardian, the body who review and register the LPAs, raising queries or rejecting the application to register the LPA. For example, you cannot ask your attorneys to do something that is against this law. This can include wording regarding euthanasia or assisted suicide. Another example is where you appoint a number of attorneys to act on a ‘joint and several’ basis and then change the way you want them to act in the instruction section. For example, you might ask that certain decisions are made together or that a specific attorney makes a certain decision. This would conflict with your choice that attorneys act jointly and severally and can result in the LPA being unworkable.
AMD’s Laura Webber considers the importance of careful consideration surrounding additional guidance to your attorneys. A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is a legal form that gives authority to those appointed as Attorneys to make decisions on behalf of the donor (the person who has created the LPA). There are separate LPAs for Property/ Financial Affairs and Health/Welfare. A key difference between the two LPAs is that the Property and Financial Affairs LPA can be used even when a Donor still has mental capacity (with their permission). A Health and Welfare LPA can only be used when a Donor has lost mental capacity. Within the LPAs, it is possible, to include instructions and/or preferences for your attorneys. This can often be very helpful, especially if the donor has not spoken with and does not intend to speak with the attorney(s) to let them know their thoughts on particular financial and health matters. This might be the case where professional attorneys are appointed. It is however
In addition, if a donor has managed investments, or wants their attorneys to be able to ask a bank etc to manage their investments, it is very important that specific wording is included in the Property and Financial Affairs LPA to ensure that management can continue, or be considered by the attorney, should the donor lose mental capacity.

AROUND THE WORLD IN EIGHTY DISHES - CAMEROON Time to ring the changes in the magazine kitchen, and introduce some sort of theme to the whole affair. We were playing our favourite board game over Christmas ("Where Is Moldova?") and talking about flags and nationalities and stuff and started to talk about national dishes. From that conversation, and the appearance on TV of David Tennant as an excellent Philleas Fogg, came the idea to take the kitchen on the road, pick a country each month and try to cook one of that nation's favourite dishes. Our daughter, a lover of and expert on flags, was given the choice of first country - and plumped for her favourite, Cameroon. So, our journey starts in central Africa, and it's not long before research into the foods of this part of the continent lead to warfare - more specifically the Jollof Wars. Jollof rice is to this part of Africa as biriani is to India, paella is to Spain, risotto is to Italy and special fried rice is to China - with as many local, regional and national variations as there are chefs. The name comes from the 14th century Wolof (or Jolof) empire, which comprised much of what is now Senegal, The Gambia and Mauritania. As the population of the empire spread west into central Africa they took with them their recipes which, over generations, led to the emergence of huge variations of recipe and heated debate about which country produces the best Jolllof - and how. Should it be long grain or basmati rice, scotch bonnet chilli or no chilli at all, beef or dried fish, rice cooked in the tomato sauce or added to the sauce, and so on. The good people of Cameroon, Ghana, Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Liberia all stake claim - in a battle of culinary history that of course will never be resolved as there is no correct answer.
So in the best tradition of nicking other peoples recipes, changing them slightly and claiming them as your own (as the President of North Korea seems to have done with the burrito) I have researched Cameroon versions of Jollof rice, tweaked them, boiled them in a pot and come up with my recipe. Don't stress about quantities / dimensions etc - at the end of the day it is pot of rice with stuff in it - I am sure your Jollof will come out fine. And if you don't have a food processor I am sure that if you chop all the ingredients very finely and combine them they will work just as well. Ingredients • 350g beef (steaks or stewing) • 300g (dry weight) long grain rice • 4 medium tomatoes • 1 carton / tin of passata • 1 white onion • 1 bunch of spring onions • 1 red pepper • 1 red chilli • 1 stick of celery • 1 good handful of fresh basil • 2 tablespoons of fresh thyme • 1 good handful of fresh coriander • 3 large cloves of garlic • 1 thumb-sized stem of fresh ginger • Olive oil • salt and pepper • 1 large carrot • 1 handful of green beans • 1 small tin of sweetcorn Method • Rinse the rice a couple of times to remove excess starch - this will help prevent it from sticking. Cover with plenty of salted water, bring to the boil then simmer as per instructions until cooked (approx 15 mins). Drain and set aside.

Make your "red mix". Deseed and roughly chop the red pepper and the chilli, quarter the tomatoes, and put them all in a food processor. Blitz until you have a nice red blend. Remove from blender bowl and set aside. Now make your "green paste". Finely chop the garlic, grate the ginger and roughly chop the celery. Drop them into the food processor, together with the thyme, basil, coriander and 2 tablespoons of olive oil. Blitz until you get a rich, creamy green paste. Set this aside too. Chop the onion and spring onions finely together. Now cut your beef into one-inch pieces, put in a saucepan and cover with cold water, a little of the sliced onion and a teaspoon of the green paste. Stir together, bring to the boil then simmer very gently for 10 minutes. Remove the beef using a slotted spoon onto a chopping board, and set the cooking water to one side. When cool enough to handle chop the beef into smaller pieces about the size of a hazelnut. In a large pan / wok heat about 4tbsp of olive oil until reasonably hot (doesn't need to be smoking though!), then add in the remainder of the onions and fry for about 5 minutes until soft and translucent. Then add in the beef and continue to fry until the beef starts to brown. Now add in the passata, the "red mix" of tomatoes, pepper and chilli, and the remaining "green paste". Combine together, reduce the heat and simmer for

10 minutes. If at any time it starts to look a little dry stir in some of the reserved beef cooking water. You are aiming for a sauce that is the consistency of a "cream of.." soup. Meanwhile peel and finely dice (about 1/2cm) the carrot, and finely chop the green beans to a similar size. Boil in salted water for just three minutes, then drain, refresh in cold water and drain again. Return to your Jollof sauce. Now add the cooked rice into the pan and gently fold in to the sauce until all the rice is nicely covered. Add in the carrots and beans, and the sweetcorn, stir again and leave to warm though on a low heat for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
It's time to eat. Serve the Jollof rice in a bowl, with the inevitable garnish of something green - a sprinkling of basil will be fine. Next month we are heading off to Jamaica....

VIEW FROM THE LORD MAYOR’S PARLOUR I’m told that January as I write this is always the quietest time of the Lord Mayor’s year, and it provides an opportunity to look back and reflect on a December which was incredibly busy but wonderful fun.
Eve was a very special experience that I will remember for a long time.
I kept a running tally over the Christmas period of turkey dinners and carol services, and the final score was eight of each (including the turkey dinner I cooked for my family on Christmas Day itself!).
Away from purely Christmas events, we attended a performance of Hansel and Gretel in the woods at Arnos Vale Cemetery by the Insane Roots theatre company. They take over unusual venues and build them into the stories that they tell. In this case the performers led the audience through the lantern-lit woods as they told the fairy tale, which was a truly magical experience. I would highly recommend looking out for their future shows in interesting locations around Bristol.
I attended a huge variety of Christmas events, but some of the highlights for me were a small community celebration with residents in Redcliffe, where we turned on the Christmas lights, had some carols and mulled wine and just spent some time relaxing and enjoying each other’s company. I also joined a “Festive Friends” lunch at St Werburgh’s Community Centre, laid on for elderly and isolated people to come together and enjoy a Christmas lunch and a singalong. These smaller community events are a contrast from some of the big high-profile things that I go to, but really embodied the true spirit of Christmas for me. Having said that, reading at the festival of nine lessons and carols in the cathedral on Christmas
My final Christmas memory was riding into town one evening on Santa’s sleigh, blasting out Christmas music and raising money for the Lord Mayor’s Charity Appeal. It was a surreal experience and after a few hours my arms ached from waving but it really was brilliant fun and one of those unique experiences that make this job such a privilege.
Earlier in December I attended a series of events to celebrate Bristol’s affiliation to the HMS Prince of Wales, one of the Royal Navy’s two new aircraft carriers, and the largest in the fleet. These culminated in a naval mess dinner on board the SS Great Britain and a service at the cathedral where the ship presented the city with its white ensign to be permanently laid in the cathedral. As I look ahead to handing over the chains to my successor in May, we will be holding our final “at home” reception at the Mansion House on Friday 11th March. TALKING PETS WITH VIKING VETS The Veterinary Nurse Veterinary nursing is not for the faint-hearted and usually involves cleaning up lots of blood, vomit and diarrhoea! Infection control is a big part of the job. Whilst many think the job is cuddling puppies all day, this could not be more wrong. We spend lots of our time assisting the vets in anaesthetics and surgical procedures, the nurses essentially keep the patient alive whilst the vet does the surgery. Veterinary nurses can take bloods, carry out scale and polishes, x-ray and even perform minor surgeries. A day in the life of a veterinary nurse could look a little something like this: Arrive in the morning and check in on any inpatients and check if any medication is due • Admit and prepare the patients for their surgery • Take and run bloods in the lab • Clean up bodily fluids • Monitor the anaesthetic and keep the patient alive! • Recover the patient and ensure
they have a smooth recovery • Care for the patient post-op (lots of cuddles) • Run lab tests • See nurse clinics • Take animals out for toilet breaks and give them lots of TLC • Communicate with owners and keep them updated • Clean up vomit • Assist vets with any restraining and handling of animals • Cuddle patients You must be passionate about animal care and wellbeing, as well as being organised and knowing how to prioritise tasks. On busy days kennels can be full of patients and consultations can be back to back, it can be stressful but the team sticks together and always make it work. 21ST CENTURY MYSTERIES Each month we tackle those mysteries of modern life that baffle us all in the 21st century. This time around we’re exploring the world of crowdfunding. What is crowdfunding? Crowdfunding is a way of raising money for a specific idea, project or cause. By asking a large number of people (a crowd) to donate a small amount of money, successful campaigns are able to raise the funds they need. In exchange for these donations, backers will receive a product or service – with those donating larger amounts receiving additional perks. Campaigns have a specific target and run over a short timeframe. Once the target is met, the people who donated money/backed the campaign should expect to receive the product/service they funded Why do individuals and business crowdfund? In many ways, crowdfunding is the ultimate marketing tool; allowing any individual or business to test the popularity of an idea without having to first spend lots of money designing and creating it, only to then find that there isn’t a market for it. By setting a realistic target and pitching your idea to as many people as possible, it can be proved once and for all whether or not an idea has legs. Crowdfunding campaigns are a way to pitch directly to customers, fans, friend and family. With no upfront costs they are also a fast way to raise money and a potential alternative where traditional funding options, such as a bank loan, aren’t available. Sounds great, are there any disadvantage? A lot of work needs to be put in to a campaign before it launches for it to be ultimately successful. Thought needs to be given to the different tiers of investment that will be on offer and what backers will get in exchange for their money. Successful campaigns often come with an engaging video and other visual aids. After that initial work has been carried out and the campaign launched, it still needs to
be promoted to a large and relevant crowd. Even then, success isn’t guaranteed. 10% of Kickstarter projects finish without receiving a single pledge. You should also note that some platforms are “all-or-nothing” meaning that a campaign has to reach or exceed its target or else no funds will be released. What are some of the best Crowdfunding platforms? There are thousands of crowdfunding sites but, having helped raise a total of $6.3 billion for its users, Kickstarter remains a vastly popular choice for both tech and creative businesses/individuals. Its main competitor is Indiegogo which has the advantage of offering both flexible and all-or-nothing campaigns. Elsewhere, niche platforms focus on specific areas of funding. GoFundMe remains the go-to choice for fundraisers looking to raise money for charitable causes and Classy is a platform specifically aimed at non-profit organisations. Similarly, SeedInvest focusses on startups. There are also subscription models such as Patreon. For example, musicians may use Patreon to raise money for a new album and will provide their monthly subscribers with intimate performances, interviews, and behind-the scenes access. Is there anything else we should know? If you’ve successfully raised your target then you need to deliver on your campaign promises, you don’t want to end up like Ryan Grepper, the developer of The Coolest Cooler – a cool box with built-in speaker, USB port and ice crusher. Back in 2014 Grepper’s Kickstarter campaign raised over £13 million from 62, 642 backers – the year’s most-funded campaign. Fast-forward to 2019, with spiralling costs, angry backers and 1/3 of the units still undelivered, the company was forced to close, thus ending one of the most disastrous crowdfunding campaigns of all time.

Through a shared appreciation of beloved tracks and by revealing her own inspiration and source material, Power builds a bridge to her fans in a far more powerful way than any Instagram or Tik Tok post could.

Struggling from health issues and facing twilight head on, often with little or no accompaniment, these songs brim with a whole lot of guts and heart. The first of the series came out in 1994. Largely recorded on a simple setup at Cash’s Tennessee cabin it mixes some excellent new material (Like A Soldier) with covers of songs by the likes of Kris Kristofferson, Leonard Cohen and Tom Waits. It’s the perfect vehicle for Cash at that point in his career. His voice wears the scars of a life well lived and each future edition is similarly affecting.
It helps that Power gives us what we want from a covers album - the right balance of songs that the casual listener will know alongside deeper cuts which reveal something of her sonic foundations. The elegiac quality of The Pogues’ A Pair Of Brown Eyes is dialled up by the stark production and detached delivery. A similarly gothic feel, aided by a churning guitar and vengeful drum beat, is entirely appropriate for her take on Nick Cave’s I Had A Dream Joe. Imbued with an acceptance that’s not heard in Nico’s original version, Jackson Browne’s These Days takes on an altogether more soothing feeling.
Such is the strength of the material, it’s difficult to choose the standout moments. American III: Solitary Man has a stoic strength which shines through on Cash’s covers of U2’s One, Neil Diamond’s Solitary Man and Nick Cave’s The Mercy Seat. Perhaps most essential is his version of the Nine Inch Nails song Hurt, found on American IV: The Man Comes Around. Faced with his own decay, it’s an arrestingly powerful moment that still makes it mark. Throughout the series, Cash proves that he’s a masterful song interpreter channelling his own unforgettable life through the music of others.
There’s clear reverence for the source material throughout and Power has an innate ability of being able to take different genres and successfully dress them in her own palette. Whether originally performed by Frank Ocean (Bad Religion), Bob Seger (Against The Wind) or Kitty Wells (It Wasn’t God Who Made Honk Tonk Angels), Power handles these songs with care, enveloping them in a comforting embrace before gifting them back to the world.

Don’t fall in to the ISA trap The tax efficient benefits of saving through an ISA are widely known. Introduced in 1999, today the ISA is seen as a cornerstone to savings and investments. Many people have amassed a significant savings pot, which of course is tax-free. However, the tax benefits only apply during the holder’s lifetime, meaning the funds will form part of their taxable estate for the purposes of inheritance tax (IHT). Perhaps it is not until later in life that you may start to consider whether the tax benefits of an ISA extend to IHT, only to find unfortunately they do not – potentially leaving you with a different issue. There is an ISA available which can reduce or negate IHT. An AIM ISA portfolio or AIM IHT ISA portfolio consists of AIM-listed shares that should benefit from IHT relief, in addition to tax free growth and income. The portfolios invest in AIM-listed companies that qualify for something called Business Property Relief (BPR). Shares held in AIM companies for at least two years potentially qualify for BPR, which if still held on death should
not be liable for IHT. One of the main benefits of these ISAs is the speed at which the investments become IHTfree compared to other options (you may have heard of the seven year rule) meaning you can potentially pass more of your wealth on to your loved ones. It is possible to transfer a portion or your entire ISA ‘pot’ to an AIM ISA, depending on your estate planning needs. The same tax benefits apply, taxfree income and growth whist retaining access to the money with full control. There are risks associated with these ISAs, so they may not be suitable for everyone. Your capital may be at risk. However, if you have IHT concerns, it could be enormously beneficial to explore the options to ensure you don’t fall into the ISA IHT trap. HISTORY NOTES NO. 167 - JULIAN LEA-JONES No. 167 - Supermarket packaging C19th Style In historic times, right up to the early twentieth century, the purpose of packaging was primarily to transport goods, whether dry or liquid. Obviously, the container also provided protection, both from spoilation by the environment and for security, whereas nowadays its function can also include display and product advertising. The next time you are struggling to get your supermarket purchases out of their plastic cocoon consider the nineteenth century reusable equivalent. The packaging known by our grandparents was certainly re-fillable but was also heavy and not necessarily as environmentally friendly as one might expect. For example, a material that was used to make jars, bottles, and pots, and in fact containers for anything from beer, chemicals, or even hot water bottles, was stoneware pottery. Stoneware was the no-frills workaday material to transport liquids for both domestic and industrial use. One advantage was that it could be made acid resistant and was more robust than glass, and unlike Henry Ford’s Model T car came in a choice of three colours – grey, cream or brown. However, one version of stoneware, (‘Salt-Glaze’ ), was made by throwing shovels of salt into the pottery kiln part-way through the firing. The salt melted and formed an impervious glaze on the pots, but at a cost. The process released clouds of noxious fumes that in wet weather fell as a very acid rain, concentrated enough to eat holes in tin roofs, (I guess it didn’t do wonders for laundry or for people’s lungs either). As demand for acid resistant containers increased, the environmental issue became so severe that an alternative was needed. A saviour came under the mantle of a Bristol firm, who by 1857 became Price Powell and Co. They developed a salt free acid proof glaze that overcame the environmental problems and was far superior - but still very heavy for larger sized containers. The large jar with bottom dispensing bung shown here is nearly 3 foot high. Imagine lugging that back
to the store to get refilled! Remember these date from the time when you considered it normal to take your own container or bag to the shopkeeper to be refilled from a barrel, tub or sack. In other words it was normal for the customer to ‘Bring Your Own Container’, BYOC, decades before it was ‘on trend’. Also pictured but at the other extreme is the tiny ink pot. The tall bottle probably held schnapps, and even today although now made of glass, the continental straight-sided styled bottle is maintained. Whatever its shortcomings, stoneware was as ubiquitous in the 19 century as plastic packaging is today. However, although pottery fragments will also remain in the soil for as long as plastic they are not as detrimental to our planet and lifeforms. However, although these examples mainly date from the nineteenth century, one product came in stoneware jars even into the supermarket era of the mid-20th Century. Remember Keillor’s Dundee Marmalade? It came in straight sided white jars that can often be found in bric-a-brac shops, (but now costing more empty than they were when full). I guess most of the survivors now do duty as kitchen utensil holders or as pencil jars – a good example of reuse! The historical development of packaging has been well documented, especially by people such as Robert Opie, whose museum in London has examples of over 12,000 items

HISTORY NOTES NO. 167 - JULIAN LEA-JONES including domestic everyday products, still in their original packaging, Despite the importance and convenience of modern packaging, because of overpackaging it is often regarded as a curse: an unnecessary cost and a serious waste of resources. Consider the example of biscuits. One may be forgiven for thinking that modern biscuit packaging is a triumph of display over function. When I was a child, locally made biscuits were dispensed and weighed out by the shopkeeper from one of a range of large, 10 inch square shaped tins (probably made at the St Thomas Street Tin plate works), from which the biscuits were decanted into a brown paper bag. If you were poor, or if you explained you only had a little pocket money, the shopkeeper would probably let you have a bag of ‘Brokens’ for 2d. ( ~1p). Nowadays an arty photograph of the biscuits in their cardboard box or shiny plastic case may entice, but when you eventually extract them from their protective wrapping you may sadly discover that you have paid a lot of money for ‘Brokens’. (Editor's Note: back in the 1980's whilst working for Rolls-Royce in Derby one of our reps was responsible for "the biscuit run". His component manufacturer was based in Ashby-de-la-Zouch, next door to the McVities factory. McVities had an on-site shop that sold broken biscuits to the public, at ridiculously cheap prices, and once a fortnight Gary would take orders and come back to Main Works with a car load of brown cardboard broken biscuit boxes. Each was like a kids lucky dip, opened in the hope that you got an excess of Bourbons and a short measure of Rich Teas.) In days gone by, not only would the product but the packaging would also have been made in Bristol. The biscuits could have come from
Ashley Vale and the paper bags made locally by E S & A Robinsons of 2 Redcliffe Street, who had hundreds of different styles of paper bags. Some were lined to contain wet products, whilst others were designed to keep the damp out. In the nineteenth century almost every product needed would have been made locally. A search through a late nineteenth century Matthews Bristol Directory reveals that there were at least other 91 makers of ‘things’ from baskets, bottles, clocks, gloves, scales to umbrellas, all made within the city and not imported from the other side of the world. In other words, a three, not thirtythousand-mile supply chain! Over the last decade there has been a steady increase in the realisation that although it has been essential for the suppliers of products who have extended global supply chains, such as fruit and vegetables airlifted from around the world, plastic packaging is bad for our planet. Suppliers rely on plastics to provide a protective atmosphere and extend the product’s shelf life, especially for supermarket food. Bizarrely, we recently had to import CO2 from America to provide a protective atmosphere for food packaging, but when opened the CO2 is released back to the atmosphere. I wonder whose CO2 quota does it count against? We know that plastic film packaging helps suppliers extend product life and the transparent packing is used to visually enhance the product. However, trying to get items out of vacuum shrink wrapped products is often very bad for the temper! But change is in the air! Due to increasing public pressure suppliers have come to realise that there are alternatives to much single use plastic packaging, without having to return to the days of extremely heavy and cumbersome stoneware and wooden barrels. Brown paper bags can once again have a waterproof lining, and compostable plastics are suitable for a wide range of products. On and near Whiteladies Road, there are at least three shops offering ‘Fill your own’

HISTORY NOTES NO. 167 - JULIAN LEA-JONES containers for everything from porridge oats to household cleaning products. ‘Wild Oats’ on Lower Redland Road was our local harbinger of the new/old BYOC idea, later to be joined by Preserve Foods on Westbury Hill, Westburyon-Trym. ‘Better Food’ and latterly ‘Scoop Wholefood’ are both on Whiteladies Road. More good packaging news: the mail order book seller, Postscript Books’ delivery cardboard boxes are sealed with paper tape and the books wrapped in green biodegradable bubble wrap, also sealed with paper tape that you can now find the end of! Thank you Postscript! Also, I notice my Royal Aeronautical Society magazine comes in a compostable A4 envelope - hopefully the postman won’t drop it in a puddle. Lastly even the little plastic sachets of cut flower food from Edith Wilmott in Westbury on Trym are compostable – to them our thanks!
and helpful is not always fully thought out. I am referring to cafes who have changed to wooden cutlery, because “…it is more, ‘Environmentally friendly’”. Friendly for whom? The trees are cut down to make what are single use items - yes, more laudable than plastic, but have you tried cutting up a lunch with a small wavy edged glorified lollipop stick? Compare this with, for example our domestic cutlery which has lasted for sixty years, (compared to one meal for the wooden cutlery). BRUCE FELLOWS’ BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS Intimacies is Katie Kitamura’s compelling and thought-provoking novel; the story of, well, we never learn her name but she’s an interpreter escaping New York to find a new life in the Hague working at the International Court. It’s not just her work that absorbs her. A friend witnesses a crime of violence and it begins to preoccupy our heroine as she meets the victim’s sister and then the victim. Her lover says he’s separated from his wife but is he really? And why does the murderous ex-president request her as his personal interpreter? She has decisions to make in this highly intelligent and disturbing tale. In his spare but vivid novel Dream Sequence, Adam Faulds tells a tale of obsession, and lust for success and fame. Kristin has a date in London with Henry, the star of a TV drama and currently occupied in getting a part in a film with a famous director. Henry’s days fill with gym visits, voiceovers, a flight to Qatar for a film premiere; and meeting Virginia. Very little is what it seems in this intriguing novel. What is the nature of Kristin’s and Henry’s date and what will be the result? Each of them is self-obsessed and can anything good come of their meeting? Caesar to Brexit; two thousand years of England in 270 pages. Rapid, direct and enlightening, demonstrating parallels that emerge in age after age, James Hawes’s The Shortest History of England is the compact but erudite history that you’ve been needing to remind you of half-remembered facts and difficult to follow reasons for things that happened in the long ago. There’s the constant, always crucial division of England into north and south along the river Trent; the impossible to escape relationships with neighbours; the thousand-year-old class system that is peculiar to us. It’s a wonderful read that will help you better understand what’s going on today. Okay, so you’re a writer struggling with your next novel when someone at a writing workshop tells you a story that would make a tremendous novel. But it’s their story to tell. You wait and watch but the expected blockbuster fails to appear. Then you hear the man is dead. What do you do? Well, in Jean Hanff Korelitz’s excellent thriller The Plot, Jake, the novelist we were thinking of, writes the book and sells millions. Moral dilemma? Not really. Jake revels in his success. Until a text arrives: ‘Thief!’ What can he do? The suspense is killing as Jake heads for an unexpected ending. Marie Mitchell shoots an attacker dead in her bedroom to protect her infant sons. Quite a big deal for a young single mum. Of course, there’s more to Marie than that and Lauren Wilkinson fills us in on her story in her stunning novel that merges fiction with fact, American Spy: African-American Marie is actually an FBI agent. Frustrated for ages behind a desk, she’s eventually given the job of helping to undermine the revolutionary president of Burkina Faso, Thomas Sankara. As a spy Marie is brave but vulnerable. Where will her task lead her? This is a revealing read and impossible to put down.

Farming and divorce Farming divorces can often be complicated and difficult to resolve. Divorcing spouses have claims in relation to income, capital, property and pensions, as well as claims against any business owned by either party to the divorce (which includes a family farm) The early exchange of financial disclosure can often prevent delay and legal costs from escalating. The integral role that the farm has played within the family in generations past, along with the role that it is intended to play in those to come, can present complicated legal challenges when a member of the family gets divorced. In many cases, it may be that the farm, its buildings and surrounding land provided a family home and an income for the divorcing couple and their children for the duration of the marriage; however, they may not actually own any of these assets.

In a divorce, particularly farming divorces, there is never just one way to skin a cat. At the outset, you should be aware that going to court is not your only option.
