You may be concerned that increasingly, solicitors’ practices are becoming ‘law firms’ with a solicitor meeting the client, taking on a matter and then supervising paralegals and legal executives to carry out the work. Corfield Solicitors does not operate in this way; we simply offer three fully qualified solicitors, personally dealing with your matter from start to finish. Deciding to leave his city centre firm, Jonathan Corfield established his own practice in Sneyd Park in 2009 where he and his wife have lived for many years and raised their family. Charles Corfield joined the practice later that year after graduating from Bristol University with a Masters in Law and both were later joined by Stuart Corfield when he also qualified as a solicitor. Our fees are set in order to make a living rather than a fortune. No ‘extra costs’ are added for home visits. No additional ‘out of hours’ charges are made.

THE EDITOR’S SMALL PIECE much now a part of our household bubble. With restrictions to our mobility imminent we dashed over to a rescue centre in west Wales and took on the job of homing two tiny little bundles of fluff. And now I feel like a born-again cat lover, because Spud and Otis have brought us immense fun and affection and joy over the last three months. The chap on the front cover is Otis, the bigger of the boys, and this is his little brother Spud. Nedless to say in the thirteen weeks they’ve been with us they have grown - both are well over twice the size and weight they were when they arrived - but neither has eased up on their inquisitiveness, mischief and playfullness that they display in buckets. They couldn’t though be less identical twins - Spud is the cool kid, very laid back, whereas Otis is reluctant to sit still and comfortably heads up the count in terms of things knocked off and broken. That said, in an unguarded moment earlier today Spud sneaked out of my office window and climbed onto the roof of the house. We only knew he was missing when we heard him miaowing as we sat in the garden having lunch. Thankfully he was coaxed back inside, but I sense more scrapes ahead with them both.

Hello there and welcome to the new July magazine. I hope this finds you in good spirits, socially less distant and enjoying, as best you can, what nature has bestowed on us - a hot early summer interspersed inevitably by what we call “large lumps of rain” falling from the skies. I’m sat in shorts as I type this at 9pm, windows open, 2 fans on and the prospect of a hotter tomorrow. Then the chance of a storm on Friday and the possibility of more like this It’s interesting talking to people and discovering what they have been up to, what has seen them through the lockdown thus far. For some it seems to be gin and jigsaws, others it is by disappearing into the world of Zoom with virtual choirs and online quizzing. And for anyone with a garden then if it’s not immaculate now it never will be, will it? We have been very fortunate in having two newcomers to stay with us, boys who are very

Before I leave you to the magazine can I just say how lovely it has been receiving feedback from lots of kind people saying how nice it was to start receiving the magazine again last month? It was really gratifying to know that people had missed their copy, so it is a pleasure to sign off and hit the print button again in the knowledge that it’s all worth it. Thank you for your support, and for supporting the local businesses who probably rely on us all now more than ever. Cheers, Andy

GOOD READS - BRUCE FELLOWS’ BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS Tangerine: a native of Tangier, which is what Lucy becomes when she turns up unannounced at college friend Alice’s Moroccan apartment. There’s heat, menace, a background of dying colonialism and the city itself with its twisting alley ways, violent history and cosmopolitan atmosphere. But why has Lucy come? The friends haven’t spoken for a year. Something happened back then. Is it all forgotten? Why can’t Alice leave the flat? Surely Lucy can help, can’t she? And Alice’s husband John, what is it he does? In the vein of Patricia Highsmith, Christine Mangan’s thriller twists and turns and is gripping and disturbing from start to finish. Christie Watson was a nurse for twenty years and now is exactly the right time to read The Language of Kindness, her astonishing account of what it is to be a nurse. Based on her own life but also introducing the wonderful colleagues she’s worked with, she gives a truthful, tender, though sometimes raw account of life on the wards. There’s enormous skill on display, there’s exhaustion, humour, dedication, heartache, stress but also inspiring and uplifting days when a patient returns from the brink, when a baby is born, when a husk of a child returns to a proper life. This book is seriously good. At the Berlin Olympics in 1936 a crew of students from Washington State University rowed into history when they won the coxed eights against Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy. All of working class origins, they had to take term time odd jobs and work every summer to afford their tuition fees. Concentrating on the harrowing childhood and hard teenage years of the number three in the boat, Joe Rantz, Daniel James Brown tells the inspiring story of their three year progress to selection for the Games and then victory in The Boys in the Boat; a thrilling account that is simply impossible to put down. Hilary Mantel, not with a historical doorstop this time but an easily manageable and excellent collection of stories: The Assassination of Margaret Thatcher. From a terrifying Greek island taxi ride to an English woman stuck in a flat in Saudi Arabia, via another woman hoping to meet her dead father, we are navigated in unusual and disquieting directions. There’s childhood cruelty, coming out in a doctor’s consulting rooms, travelling the country to address literary groups, and a long wait for the plumber where the caller turns out to be someone different entirely; all told with a sound judgement of the necessary precise detail. It’s terrific. The Kill by Richard House is set in Naples and if you like your novels complicated then this one is for you; think of the film Memento. Two brothers rent a room, they hire a driver; an American student disappears; a brain-damaged security guard finds human remains. Is the murder based on one in a novel called The Kill? And what is the sequence of events? Another American student turns up to write about the mystery. What happens to him? Who is Mizuki? What about the palazzo? The plot is a maze but once you’re in, you have to keep going. It’s a great read. 8

Senior Snippets

Staying active at home

Welcome to the latest edition of Senior Snippets: the monthly advisory column with the older members of our community in mind, brought to you by John Moore, Director of Home Instead Senior Care in North Bristol. With many older people still confined to their homes, here are some simple ways to keep active at home. ●

Break up long periods of sitting down It’s a good habit to try and get up once an hour and stretch your arms and legs a little. Even if it’s just walking to the kitchen to put the kettle on, it all helps. But if you find standing difficult, just moving your arms and legs for a few minutes every hour is also beneficial.

Do some gentle stretching Stretching is a great way to keep supple, and doing it daily can also help improve flexibility and balance. Try the following stretching exercise. 1. Sit on a chair 2. Lift your leg up off the seat keeping your knee bent 3. Return to sitting position 4. Repeat with the other leg

Try sitting exercises from your chair Be sure to choose a chair that is stable, solid and doesn’t have wheels. You should be able to sit with your feet flat on the floor and knees at right angles. 1. Sit upright with your feet flat on the floor, cross your arms and reach for your shoulders. 2. Without moving your hips, turn your upper body to the left as far as is comfortable and hold for five seconds 3. Repeat on the right side and then five times on each side.

If you would like some additional support or are concerned about a loved one, and would like to speak to someone at Home Instead, please do get in touch. Telephone 0117 989 8210 or email john.moore@homeinstead.co.uk

ON OUR DOORSTEPS out over gorgeous rolling countryside and the city below, contemplated giving up what he had got for what he might get in embarking on a solo career. Turned out pretty well for him, and to be honest it would be hard not to be inspired, philosophical or simply blown away by this special place.

Last month I described a walk in the woods surrounding Kings Weston House, and noted that despite living in BS9 for almost 25 years Penpole Wood was an area I’d never visited - sadly. For me it was a reminder of how much of natural beauty and interest there is nearby, that we may or not know of but have certainly not discovered.

I’ll let readers discover Solsbury Hill for yourselves and not say too much descriptively about it. Suffice to say we went on abeautiful day when the cows were grazing on the open grass, butterflies by the score were enjoying the sun and battling the breeze and the skylarks singing enchantingly in the big skies. I have no doubt it would be equally dramatic in other ways on a stormy day or a moonlit (k)night (sorry, little nod to Genesis fans there).

This month, for no reason other than it popped up into my consciousness by way of a randomly chosen musical playlist on my phone, I visited another local place that I long new of but had not found the opportunity or reason to check out. Which is in itself a surprise given the song that takes its name from the place is easily in my top ten tracks of all time. Just north of Bath and a stones throw from Batheaston is a hill with a flat top. It’s not a big hill, not difficult to climb, but rewards the explorer who manages to find it (it is deceptively hard to get to) with stunning views of Bath and its surrounds (I always think Bath looks better from a distance). As important for many a visitor will be the fact that, with a jaunty tune rattling around your head, you can declare that you have been “climbing up on Solsbury Hill”.

As mentioned, it’s hard to believe a hill can be easily missed but we struggled to find it, as did some friends who visited since on our advice (she blames his mapreading skills, he blames her inability to use a satnav). It is roughly midpoint between Swainswick on the A46 and Batheaston we approached it driving along Swainswick Lane and the very narrow Solsbury Lane which is a dead end but with room for about 5 cars to park at the top. If you find it I’m sure you’ll enjoy it. Next month I’m going to explore somewhere elso on our doorstep that I’ve not discovered in my 30 years in Bristol not sure yet whether it will be Stoke Park Estate, Snuff Mills or Troopers Hill. Or any other gems you might like to suggest.W

Immortalised in song by Peter Gabriel back in 1977, Little Solsbury Hill to give it its full name (presumably Peter struggled to get “Little” to scan well musically) is just a joy. Apparently he visited the hill and, looking 20

Resolving your HR issues in the aftermath of Covid 19 As the economy starts thawing from its enforced deep freeze, UK businesses are attempting to return to some sense of normality. The hope is that there will be a swift economic rebound. The level of Government financial support so far has been colossal and much needed, but that is scheduled to end shortly. Firms will therefore increasingly have to adapt and become more self-reliant by the time we hit the Autumn.

HR Resolve can assist Whether you are a business or an employee, an initial free consultation will give us an understanding of your situation and identify how we can help. Resolve your business staffing issues

If you are a business employer and need to adjust your staffing levels, make changes to employees’ working hours and pay, identify job roles that are no longer viable, we will show you how to carry out your requirements properly.

Implications for business For some firms, the previous levels of customer trade and revenue may not return to profitable levels. They will face difficult decisions – whether to continue fully staffed, to make cutbacks, to ask their employees to work parttime, or perhaps decide that the business is no longer viable and let people go. For small to medium businesses squaring up to these challenges, it is crucial that they can access solid, professional HR guidance on how to make changes to their staffing. Get it right, and you end up treating your employees fairly and legally. Get it wrong, and you face potential employment tribunal claims and reputational harm.

We can help you put together all the documentation required and support you as much as you need, throughout the whole process from beginning to end. Helping you and your valued employees manage the changes fairly and legally, reducing unnecessary stress and with the least disruption possible. Resolve your employment situation

Impact on employees

If you are an employee who believes you are not being treated legally and fairly, we can support you with your employment rights and help secure the outcome you need.

For employees, there may be worries and uncertainty meeting them as they return to their jobs. Will their role continue as before, will they be facing a reduction of working hours, maybe even redundancy? Whilst most organisations try and follow correct employment law processes, there are some that fail to do so. THIS BS9 LIFE - DUNCAN HASKELL privileged position; able to work from home, a home with a back garden and plenty of space, in a part of the world with great walks nearby and a caring community on the doorstep. Clearly my struggles coming up with a topic to write about pale in comparison to the true difficulties faced by those whose might be ill, have lost their jobs, are struggling with home schooling or any of the other devastating consequences of the current pandemic.

Because the act of deciding what to talk about right now has wrapped me up into a giant knot, I’m taking a slightly meta approach to things this month and am writing a column about writing a column. Perhaps, by sharing the inner machinations of my creative process, I’ll come up with something useful by the bottom of the page. Even at the best of times it’s impossible to keep up with the daily news cycle and remain on top of current affairs. Considering all that’s currently being thrown at us on a daily basis, anything that I write now, in mid June, will no doubt be dwarfed by some other seismic event by the time you’re all reading it.

Lastly, there’s a moral dilemma to be answered. This column isn’t a platform for my personal beliefs, but a light-hearted look at Bristol life. However, during these important times of civil unrest should I use my 400 words to speak up for Black Lives Matter. By not speaking of ongoing injustice am I part of the problem? Is my silence complicity?

The calendar often dictates what I write about. Particularly at this fertile time of year when Bristol is teeming with festivals each and every weekend. Festivals which have sadly (but necessarily) been removed from our lives. And yes, shops have just reopened and lockdown is gradually easing, but who knows whether that will still be the case come July. Perhaps I should join the queue outside of Primark, as a true journalist would, but having spent the last three months doing everything I can to socially distance, I just can’t bring myself to take one for the team.

The result of all this overthinking is a kind of creative paralysis, one which is of little use to anyone and one which I promise to have rectified come August! Duncan Haskell (for the avoidance of doubt, this month’s photo is not of Duncan, nor was it taken in BS9 - Ed.)

There’s also my deep-rooted fear of looking like I’m complaining. I know I am in a very

TRAVELS OF THE BISHOP’S KNOLL ORGAN - CHRIS STEPHENS Following on from Chris Stephens’ articles last year on the history of Bishop’s Knoll in Sneyd Park comes this musical update.

AG Powell the honorary editor of “Cooee!” the Bishop’s Knoll hospital magazine wrote in 1930 “The lighter side of hospital life - that helped so materially to maintain the cheerfulness of the patients and which medical science regard as so vital - was as well organized as the other aspects. The finest musical talent in Bristol was available for concerts which formed a regular feature of the entertainments throughout the war period. A Saturday afternoon scene in the main ward - the ballroom of Bishops knoll in peacetime - comes to mind. At one end of the beautiful room is the platform with its fine two manual organ; on either side oral range to cots on which slide the stricken soldiers, some of whom have spent months patiently waiting for indescribably ghastly wounds to heal, or shattered limbs to mend. In the centre is the audience, visitors, nursing staff, and convalescent men”.

“A few days after the First World War broke out Robert Edwin Bush and his wife decided to convert their large house, Bishop’s Knoll in Sneyd Park, into an emergency hospital. Bush (1855-1939) had bought the house in 1905 after the death of its previous owner Peter Prankerd (1839-1902). Both these owners had made their fortunes in Australia which is why Bush intended his hospital to be used by wounded soldiers of the Australian Imperial Forces. Either late in 1914 or early in 1915 Bush commissioned a two manual pipe organ to be built for installation into the former ballroom of Bishop’s Knoll, seen below as the hospital’s Ward 1 containing 12 beds.

This is certainly borne out by an account by Bombardier W.G.Haynes who wrote “I remained at Bishop’s Knoll for about six weeks, and spent a very enjoyable time. I found out that Commandant R.E.Bush works very hard during the day, assisting and superintending the preparation of meals, as well as running the whole of the work in connection with the hospital. Often during the evenings he would come into the splendid balroom (or Ward 1), and play tunes to us on the superb organ that stands at the far end of the ward on a raised platform. Whenever he played “Onward Christian soldiers!” he would remark : “Ah! Here’s one with a chorus,” and the men would join in the singing of this hymn very heartily”.

This was constructed by Thomas William Lewis (1863-1942) whose home was in Bishop Road, Horfield but whose works were in Backfields Lane, Stokes Croft. T.W Lewis was not as well known as the unrelated organ builder T C Lewis but 15 years later would build the organ for the Bristol Masonic Hall in Park Street, and probably also the magnificent 1913 organ in St Ambrose church in Whitehall (attributed in the National Pipe organ Register to T and W Lewis as at this time Walter Thomas Lewis was working for his father).

Bush almost certainly learned to play on the Willis organ paid for by Headmaster John Percival in its original location in the new Clifton College Chapel. He would have been under the tutelage of Mr W.F.Trimnell (18391901) who was the College’s Choirmaster and Organist from 1864-1896 and noted for his patience. Trimnell, like his brother, had been a chorister and later deputy organist at the Bristol Cathedral. The Bishop’s Knoll

It is clear that Bush was a good player of the instrument and it was used during WW1 both for accompanying hymns for the wounded soldiers and also in the concerts held there. 29

TRAVELS OF THE BISHOP’S KNOLL ORGAN - CHRIS STEPHENS concert advertised here must have amounted to the inauguration of the organ which had only been installed six months earlier. It is noteworthy that the Master of Ceremonies on this occasion was Private William Stumbles, a remarkable Australian soldier who, after recovery from his wounds, was invalided out of the Imperial Forces - but having recovered in Australia re volunteered and returned to active service as a Sergeant. Much to everyone’s delight at the Hospital he attended the Gallipoli Day (Anzac Day) parade in Bristol in April 1917 where (below) Powell presented him to the Lord Mayor.

in 1940 and its Harrison and Harrison organ destroyed since when a piano had been used in services held in the adjacent church hall. Funds to build the original church in 1868 had been raised by a committee chaired by E.S Robinson, a prominent Baptist and founder of a Bristol paper and packaging business. He was well known to Mr and Mrs Bush as well as A.G. Powell who had been employed by Robinson after he left school. This connection is perhaps how the organ came to be donated. The church secretary at that time wrote “‘It is a dear little organ, good looking, possessing two manuals, a pedal board and varied range of stops. It was formerly in the hall of the Bush family home in Stoke Bishop and should be just about the right size for our hall.’ The organ’s final move was in 1955 when the Whiteladies Road church was rebuilt and the organ became redundant. It was moved to the Counterslip Baptist Church, which had also been bombed during the Second World War when it was located in Victoria Street. After that the Church used several temporary venues before it moved to Hengrove Hall, Whitchurch for several years. The church was finally rebuilt on its present site on Wells Road, Whitchurch in 1957. However before it was relocated there the organ was rebuilt and enlarged by Percy Daniel and Co. of Clevedon who installed it in a panelled oak case with louvered front.10 I understand that Daniel’s records are with the Somerset Archive and hopefully he may have taken some photographs of the original organ before the rebuild. It would also be good to know whether it was hand pumped during its time at Bishop’s Knoll, for although most of Bristol had an electricity supply by 1915 the photographs of Ward 1 suggest it was still lit by gas!”

The last patient left Bishop’s Knoll in February 1919 and the house then returned to its former family use, but soon after Bush died in 1939 house was requisitioned for use by the Bristol Aircraft Company whose factory was being dispersed all over Bristol. When peace returned in 1945 the house was bought from Mrs Bush by the Board of the United Bristol Hospitals for use as a Preliminary Nurse Training Unit. At this point the organ was removed and replaced by a blackboard so that the music room could take on its new role as a lecture theatre.

FINANCE - “WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE?” ASKS PHIL JAMES the money that goes back into the economy and the jobs it creates. Maybe it also benefits other companies in the supply chain, maybe it benefits some of the functions of the public sector. Often investments are made into those leading innovation, finding new, more sustainable products or services. An active fund manager will consider many things before investing, such as who the company is, its reputation, plans, what sector it’s in and the impact – for example the company may be in Technology or Healthcare, both of which have been very resilient during the COVID 19 outbreak in recent months and therefore a positive influence on the S&P 500 in the US. However, they have probably avoided or reduced exposure to airlines, energy and financials (all of which are significant to the UK economy). They will also consider the reserves of any company, as the more secure a company’s balance sheet, the more they are able to withstand shocks. It’s worth remembering some sectors were in decline long before COVID 19, while some companies have moved swiftly to benefit. Ultimately, they will either Fail, Survive or Prosper.

As questions go, it’s a short one – just 6 words. However, anyone trying to answer it at the moment, will take a great deal longer, with liberal use of that word, ‘However’ being required! In recent weeks I have thought of COVID 19 and all its implications (not just financial), as being like going into a dark tunnel. For many, the impact will take years to recover from and for some, only the passing of time will make things a little easier. It does seem however as I write this article in the 2nd week of June, that there is now light at the end of the tunnel. Of course, our own and other’s wellbeing, depends on so many issues, but it would be naive to think that financial stability doesn’t play a role and that is why it’s not a binary choice between protecting public health or protecting the economy. It’s not as simple one or the other. There has to be a balance as an economy that is failing, has huge and far reaching implications on people. Yes, we might see reductions in the value of investments, pensions and property, however the impact will lead to increased unemployment, greater debt, greater poverty, more dependency on food banks, poorer health, a greater number of businesses failing and greater pressure on the public sector.

So why is it difficult to know where we go from here? Well as the weeks have passed, a growing understanding of some of the impacts of COVID19 has emerged. As the number of cases and deaths has reduced, optimism has increased which has influenced a recovery of sorts in stock markets, but this perhaps creates more vulnerability to disappointing setbacks from here. So even if the worst is behind us, the economic indicators for the 2nd quarter have yet to fall into the hands of the media and it will be the 3rd quarter really, before we emerge from lockdown and influence the next 12 months. While income from shares will decline for the remainder of the year, the more optimistic point towards an improvement in 2021; be realistic about GDP and unemployment headlines and focus towards the end of the year and into 2021.

Back in March, we had no idea how long the dark tunnel was, we didn’t even know if it was different to any tunnel we’d experienced before. There wasn’t a guidebook as to what to expect, what would happen and what needed to be done and so it was little wonder that global stock markets (that notoriously dislike uncertainty), reacted in the way they did. In reality, with no crystal ball or hindsight, investment managers have to rely on knowledge and experience, which enables them to see changing events and react accordingly. I have always believed that in times of significant uncertainty and volatility, active investment management (having investment professionals making decisions on your behalf), rather than passive, really pays off. Yes, you will pay more in charges, but often during volatile times, these additional costs are nothing compared to the potential benefit of having someone ‘limit the damage’ that could ensue.

So, fund managers invest in companies. They do so in the hope that this benefits their investors, however in doing so, the company receives capital which enables them to continue production of a product, create new services, expand into new areas. This in turn benefits the staff they employ, the salary they earn, the taxes that are paid,

SOLUTIONS HYPNOTHERAPY

If you would like to join the sessions then all you need is a nice, quiet comfortable space to relax (maybe a blanket and pillow!) and access to zoom via your pc, tablet or smart phone. All you need to do each evening is click on the following link.

fo r a b a l a n c e d m i n d & b o d y

The last few months have seen us as individuals, a nation and the world face things that we (certainly I) never thought we would. Simple things we took for granted doing like grabbing that morning coffee on the way into work through to the larger and much more serious things like the health and safety of those we love.

As a Hypnotherapist I have worked with people struggling with anxiety and depression for the last 14 years and I have never been in a situation where so much has happened to so many and so quickly and I have been very aware of the impact that the worry, stress and challenges of this situation on our mental health and well being.

I have also continued to work with clients during this time, via zoom offering one to one virtual sessions. I had used zoom for many years but certainly not for everyone, however after seeing the very positive impact that zoom sessions are having for people who are facing challenges like many of us such as work changes, financial security, health anxiety and missing that all important interaction with family and friends, I am looking to open this up and offer more sessions virtually, until such time when it is safe to also offer face to face sessions in my practice.

With this is mind I have been running free relaxation sessions since the start of lock down to help anyone who might be feeling anxious, having trouble sleeping or just need a bit of time out to relax. These sessions are still continuing if you would like to join me. The sessions run every evening Monday to Friday from 8 to 8.30pm and during this time I will give you some tips and hints as to things that have been proved (by neuroscience!) to make us feel a little better, improve sleep and reduce anxiety, followed by a guided relaxation. A great way to spend your evening and helping you to get a better quality sleep.

If you are interested in finding out more please get in touch, I offer a free initial consultation during which I will explain more about how the mind works in creating anxiety, anger, depression, how this affects our sleep, our moods and feelings of well being and much much more. This is all based on the latest research and neuroscience. I will also share how and why hypnotherapy can help.

PRIZE WORDSEARCH - NUMBER ONE Listed below are twenty one of the best known military aircraft of the world. Twenty of the names are hidden in the wordsearch grid, meaning one has gone off the radar. The words can be hidden forwards, backwards, up, down or on a diagonal. Just find the missing aircraft, let me know what it is and if you are the first correct entry out of the hat after the 30th July deadline you will win the book and the model kit. Entries please to andy@bcmagazines.co.uk, text 07845 986650, tel 0117 259 1964 or in writing to 8 Sandyleaze, WoT, BS9 3PY. Happy aircraft spotting

Two prize wordsearches for you this month, for no reason other than I felt like doing two. The first has an aeronautical theme, the second on page 68 has a craft theme. So, aircraft first. During the lockdown I have taken curious pleasure in revisiting the childhood pastime of making model aircraft, and now three scale model fighters are dogfighting in the skies over my desk here at BS9 towers. Quite by chance I was contacted by local resident Steve Ladd, a retired USAF fighter pilot, to ask if I’d like to review his forthcoming memoirs “From F4-Phantom to A10-Warthog”. You can read this in the September issue. So, putting things together we’ve got an aircraft _____________________________ themed wordsearch for which the prize is an Airfix scale model of the Phantom together with, in due course, a copy of Steve’s book.

News from Henleaze Tennis Club Tucked away from sight, just off Springfield Grove and not far from the traffic lights on Kellaway Avenue, this popular tennis club has been in existence since 1926. Originally a 2-court club, it was one of four tennis clubs organized by various local church groups on land sold off by Springfield Farm in 1923. The original grass courts were eventually laid to tarmac and, when the neighbouring two courts then owned by the Waterworks Club, were purchased in 1993, the club became a four court playing facility. After lockdown, the club committee was delighted when it was announced that tennis could come back, albeit with some strict restrictions in place. The everpopular club sessions remain impossible due to the requirement to reduce the spread of infection and protect players and staff. The clubhouse is closed removing possibility for the usual social tea, coffee and cakes which members so enjoy. But we are back on court! With a new system of court bookings established, ‘lockdown singles boxes’ running, and members linked in through WhatsApp to arrange games, the courts are being very well used. A number of new players have signed up in the last couple of weeks and we are always keen to hear from anyone interested in playing at our club and happy to talk through the variety of options, including short term ‘taster’ membership. Following a recent successful planning application the club is aiming to see floodlights installed on one court which is a very exciting development. Hand in hand with this improvement has come the appointment of a new Head Coach, Will Hardiman. Due to start work on the 1st April the Lockdown made for a tricky start! However, the coaching programme is establishing well.

Will has been c o a c h i n g professionally for over ten years and grew up in a tennis family in Bristol. With a focus on delivering a diverse and exciting tennis programme, he has experience w o r k i n g with both Juniors and Adults of all ranges of ability. As a former top national junior and Avon County champion, he has a wide understanding of the game which informs his coaching of technique and tactics on court. Will has launched an accessible and fun filled programme for all ages and abilities. We can’t know exactly what the ‘new normal’ will be for tennis clubs. We do know we will be delighted when we can reopen the clubhouse and recommence club play sessions and our lively social events. However, lockdown has provided an opportunity to reflect and the current restrictions have forced the club to look at new ways of working. It will be interesting and exciting to see how the club can adapt to a changing world and increase the opportunities for sharing the sport we love. Out of crisis comes opportunity!

The effect of COVID 19 on divorce and financial settlements - here is a summary of the challenges being posed to the family law process as a result of the current pandemic.

disadvantage one party. You can apply to have a decision reviewed if you believe a sudden and unforeseen event has made it unfair, however normally a market downturn would not qualify.

Divorcing couples could face delays, battles over maintenance payments and separation from their children as coronavirus has thrown traditional court processes out of the window. The pandemic has led to job losses, financial difficulties and childcare problems while schools are closed. These factors could force some families to reconsider settlements and even whether to get divorced at all.It is still possible to get divorced, despite courts being closed. However couples may experience delays. Court staff have had to move to working from home and, although some hearings are being done remotely via video link, only urgent cases – for example involving domestic abuse or child protection – are being prioritised. Remote hearings clearly have a part to play but on the downside it could be harder for judges to assess a person’s character via a video call and this could lead to some people feeling they have been treated unfairly. It should be mentioned that divorce cases only go to a court hearing if disputes over financial settlements or children cannot be resolved by the couple or their lawyers.

Problems in selling the family home . The housing market too is going through difficulties and sellers may be hard-pushed to find a buyer at this time. That could throw settlements into jeopardy if couples are unable to sell their family home – potentially increasing their capital gains tax liabilities when they do finally reach a deal. Capital gains tax on divorce. Husbands, wives and civil partners may have to pay capital gains tax when transferring assets from one person to the other after the relationship has legally ended. These include shares, property and certain personal possessions that have increased in value. Everyone has an annual tax-free allowance of £12,000. Any profits made on the sale of an asset that exceeds this allowance will be taxed at a rate up to 28% Living with an abusive partner. What can be done? Those who have not yet separated from their partner will still be considered as part of the same household and have to isolate together for the foreseeable future. Those who are still living with a coercive partner at this time should try reaching out to charities such as Women’s Age and Refuge. Some are now communicating with victims via What’s App, as it may be hard to make calls discretely while the partner is also at home. In serious cases of abuse recourse can always be had to the police.

Renegotiating a financial settlement if coronavirus has made it unfair. The pandemic has also thrown stock markets and businesses into chaos. Circumstances are changing all the time, which could create a situation where a financial settlement suddenly becomes very unfavourable for one party. If, for example, a couple has decided to split their assets equally, with one partner keeping the house and the other the shares and pension, a significant fall in stock markets could severely

An update from the Bristol North West Climate Action Group

Try these key tips: 1. Organise your tins and dry goods by use-bydate. 2. Don’t over fill your fridge to allow cold air to circulate 3. Re-grow salad from scraps

As we start to come out of lockdown, what will remain the same in our city? What will need to change? How can we help shape the future, so we get a balance between the economy, the climate and our health and wellbeing? There has been quite a bit going over the last weeks and months around making the city more liveable, as we begin to go back to work, socialise and shop a bit more.

Avonmouth Reuse Shop For many people, lockdown has provided the opportunity for DIY projects or home improvements. But before you throw your bulky waste away, remember you could donate it to the Reuse and Recycling Centre in Avonmouth. Many people would be very happy to get a hold of those items that don’t fit in your home anymore.

Waste not with Bristol Waste Some jobs have gone on despite lockdown. It is thanks to our key workers that we have been kept fed and watered, and had our bins emptied and streets cleaned. Now we need to redouble our efforts to reduce, reuse, repurpose and recycle our waste and help improve the local environment.

Reaching our 2030 carbon neutral target Congestion in Bristol was three times the national average before lockdown, and emissions from the transport sector remain the largest contributor to pollution. A recent report by the Cabot Institute has found that Bristol must cut car journeys by at least 30%.

Could you waste nothing for a whole year? Last year, 50 families from all over Bristol participated in a year-long challenge dedicated to reducing household waste. This year, Bristol Waste are taking the #WasteNothing Challenge to the next level with 100 households receiving zero waste kits, support, and an online forum to help them reach their zero waste goals over the next 12 months. Applications for the challenge can be found at www.bristolwastecompany. co.uk/ - search for Bristol Waste, Waste Nothing challenge and go to the “Take the Challenge” tab.

We will need to make the majority of local journeys on foot or by bike if we are to achieve our net carbon target by 2030.This will help improve people’s health, create better places to live and travel in, and drive clean economic growth. It has been lovely to see families out walking and cycling recently, but will this stop now that more cars are back on our roads? Have your say on Bristol’s future Bristol has received funding to help improve its walking and cycling infrastructure post Covid. The Council has developed a new interactive map to capture the changes needed to pavements and roads in Bristol. Add your ideas to the interactive map: https://www.bristol.gov. uk/covidtransport Bristol Green Capital Partnership are holding an event on Wednesday 8th July. Bristol’s Reset, Nature’s Recovery will consider how we might tackle some of the huge challenges the Coronavirus pandemic has raised. It will be a chance for us as individuals, organisations and communities to harness some of the positive changes and help us recover as a city. www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/bristols-reset-naturesrecovery-tickets-109817920356

Negoang Finances in Divorce During Coronavirus

Sam Hickman

The pandemic has sent financial shockwaves throughout the world. For those negoang finances on separaon, the current climate may pose some challenges. We explore some key points separang couples may want to consider.

Firstly, be assured that solicitors, mediators and the court connue operang remotely to support you. The first step in reaching a selement is to exchange financial details with your spouse. Usually done using a ‘Form E’, you are required to disclose detailed informaon about your assets, liabilies, pensions and income. Financial Uncertainty Financial implicaons of the pandemic are being widely felt. In relaon to divorce, significant challenges are presented when it comes to valuing assets. Whilst all valuaons are a snapshot in me, the current uncertainty is more significant than usual fluctuaons. The value of shares and investments are likely to have decreased, the property market is uncertain and income may be unknown for the self-employed or those facing potenal job losses. Reaching agreement about the family home is likely to be parcularly challenging; valuaons may not be carried out in person, mortgage capacity may have changed for those needing to buy a new property and many banks have raised the amount of deposit required. This will undoubtedly affect your negoaons.

54

Whilst the future of the economy is uncertain, separang spouses will need to carefully consider the ming of obtaining valuaons. If already obtained, some may consider updang valuaons, whilst others may seek to delay this. We encourage pares to seek independent financial advice and consider the impact of the current economic climate on your finances during negoaons. Separaon Agreements If you are confident that the current market will not affect your financial negoaons, you should seek legal and financial advice and look to finalise the selement. However, some separang couples may decide to enter into a Separaon Agreement, instead of formalising a selement at this me. A Separaon Agreement typically sets out who will: • • •

issue formal divorce proceedings and when; pay the bills; and what will happen with the home, bank accounts and investments.

WIt can also detail childcare arrangements.

They can be highly persuasive with the courts. When the me is right, these agreements can form the basis of a formal financial selement in a Consent Order that is approved by the court. If the value of assets or either spouses’ income changes significantly before a Consent Order is approved, further negoaons may be necessary to ensure both pares’ needs are met and the selement is sll considered ‘fair’ by the court. We do not recommend transferring any asset with substanal value, e.g. the family home, prior to lodging a Consent Order with the court.

My Selement Doesn’t Seem Fair Anymore In some very limited circumstances, you may apply to the court to vary a financial order. We have reported on this in our arcle ‘Challenging Divorce Selements in Light of Coronavirus’, found on our website.

If you would like legal advice on your divorce or separaon please contact Sam Hickman on 0117 314 5435.

HISTORY NOTES NO. 149 - JULIAN LEA-JONES Library Angels and bookish moments

View, Westbury Park. Other gaps in the book scene have been filled by charity bookshops such as Oxfam, Amnesty International and The Heart Foundation, with many other charity shops selling donated books.

Tristram Fane Saunders’ recent article in the Daily Telegraph imparted the thrilling news that at last bookshops were re-opening post-peak, and how books have provided solace to many of us during the Covid 19 lockdown. His article reminded me of our own bookish moments and provided the inspiration for this month’s History Note.

Experiences of Library Angels Whilst preparing a paper about the St John’s Conduit for a Medieval History Congress in the USA, up against the submission deadline and urgently needing information about the Sugar refinery set up on the site of the Carmelite Friary, I had been told that the information was in one of the Central Library’s hundreds of Bristol & Gloucestershire Archaeological Societies Volumes of Transactions, but with no idea which one. Faced with the daunting task of searching through all of these, I did the only thing possible. I stood in front of the shelves, shut my eyes, and concentrated on a mental image of the engraving I had been shown of Mr Young’s ‘Great House’, (on the site). I walked forward and selected the first book to hand and opened it at the page which amazingly contained the exact paragraph describing the dispute that had taken place between the parishioners of St. John’s and the owners of the refinery. The refinery was not leaving enough water for the parish. I believe this is a classic example of the technique described by Arthur Koestler as Library Angels, or as another friend described it as “Library Dowsing”.

Our cat Jenny helping with cat-a-logueing During the mid-nineteenth century Bristol’s population numbered 154,093, and before we were a university city we had eighty registered bookbinders (1) and sellers, of whom eight also sold second-hand books. Compare this with the late twentieth century when, in 1962, we had only twenty-two bookshops (2) and now with the population approaching 600,000 there are even less!

For the following examples I must thank my wife. In the middle of researching the introduction of the GMT telegraphic time signal to Bristol for a restoration project, we happened to be in St Helier on holiday. We visited a second-hand bookshop, (of course), whereupon Diane spotted a small leather notebook on the floor beneath a shelf. Eureka! It was exactly what was needed for the project; a nineteenth century directory of all the telegraph offices in the country together with the technical details of the lines.

Many of us of an age still miss many including Claude Gill, Arthur George’s in Christmas Steps, The Pied Piper, Chapter & Verse, and Bill Singleton’s “Bishopston Books. However the good news is that in addition to national chains such as Blackwell’s, (who took over William Georges (3)), Stanfords, Foyles, Waterstones and WH Smith, we still have some notable local survivors such as; Beware Of The Leopard Books, Dreadnought Books, Bloom & Curll, Storysmith, Bakers Books, Forbidden Planet, Bristol Asian Bookshop, Many of our small independent shops have closed due to retirement and no one willing to continue the business. A recent and notable exception to this trend, is ‘Max Minerva’ who have carried on and extended the tradition of the much loved Durdham Downs book shop in North

On another occasion, visiting Bath’s much missed Shires Yard Market, at the time the current project was Dowsing and Ley Lines, the term coined by Alfred Watkins in the 1920s. Diane’s find? A signed first edition of Alfred’s Old Straight Track setting out his theories and discoveries. Both discovered by my very own library Angel! (continued overleaf)

HISTORY NOTES NO. 149 - JULIAN LEA-JONES Serendipity and some bookish moments

Victims Relief Service’. I was able to publish the fascinating remainder of his story and give the long-lost letter to Harry’s descendants. The moral of this story is you never know what you may find in old books, and where it may lead.

What is meant by Serendipity? Horace Walpole wrote to his friend Sir Horace Mann first coining the expression, Serendipity, describing it as the “facility of making lucky and unexpected discoveries.”

Window shopping during an unexpected visit to Birmingham I came across a second-hand bookshop, and upon enquiring if they had any books on Bristol, the shopkeeper’s badtempered response was a surprisingly vehement “No!” Intuition made me persist and eventually he admitted that there were some in the cellar still boxed, but he was far too busy to unpack them. Again, I persisted, and he reluctantly agreed that if I came back in a few hours he MIGHT get them up for me. Calling back afternoon I was handed a large box of books, papers etc and told that I had to buy the lot or none. The 1970 asking price of seven pounds for something sight unseen, I could ill afford but the same ‘message’ that made me persist said “Go on.” The find was amazing; several nineteenth-century leather bound biographies of Bristol Worthies and an opening-day commemorative programme for Bristol University. Certainly, worth the cost, but the magic find was a set of cutting books containing private notes, articles, certificates, and correspondence spanning forty years of Miss Winifred Parry’s life as Bristol’s first lady reference Librarian and a suffragette. An aside – it seems that sellers of second-hand books fall into two distinct categories; Those who are amazingly helpful, and those, thankfully a minority, who resent parting with any of ‘their’ books.

How many of our readers remember the ‘Larky Lot’ second-hand bookshop that used to be at 89 Lower Redland Road? I was a frequent lunchtime visitor to the shop as it was conveniently near the Shakespeare Pub. In April 1994 I bought several Bristol Books and a delightfully worded letter fell out of one of them. Dated 7 January 1919, to Harry Cottrell, from friends in Dolê in France, and précised, read as follows: “To Harry Cottrell among the brethren of the Maintenance Department. Greeting. Thy enquiries touching gruyere cheese and the price thereof have touched me profoundly, I have therefore conferred with one Puget Bernard, a merchant of cheeses in the Rue de la Sousprefecture of this town. The said merchant of cheeses having for many months now delivered here at Dôle, and moreover being assured of the goodwill and justice of the nation of the English, the said merchant, I say, will send unto thee such cheese of the kind called gruyère as thou mightest desire… In faith, in hope, and in love, and in the name of myself, Madame, Monsieur, Raymond, Hélène and last but not least Marie Louise, a worthy sister indeed before the Lord, I send thee Greeting for the New Year. Thy friend, Ralph Goss.”

A Henleaze jumble sale find of a book was an amazing as it eventually linking up an Opera libretto, and a poem to the book. The 19th century book titled ‘Mathilde’ caught my eye, and although in French I understood enough to realise that it was about the Crusades and the Templars. A friend, the late Roy Davis agreed to provide a summary translation to see if it contained any new information about the First Crusade. However, he was in the middle of translating a difficult libretto and couldn’t look at my book until he had finished. The 1784 opera was Haydn’s ‘Armida’ and the libretto had been written by Coltellini in Italian, and to date there had been no English translation. Haydn had taken his theme from Tasso’s 16th century poem about (continued on page 78

Imagine my surprise when a couple of days after publication of the discovery in the next ‘History Notes’ I was contacted by a friend, Marian Liebmann who told me that, because of the language of the letter, and the use of ‘thee’ and ‘thou’, she guessed that Harry Cottrell could have been a member of ‘The Society of Friends’ (Quakers). Marian put me in contact with Roger Sturge, also a member of the community. His reply solved the mystery, but there was more! “Harry Cottrell was indeed a Quaker and a friend of my parents.” Thanks to Roger, I received a potted biography of Harry as well as a explanation for the letter. As a practicing Quaker opposed to warfare, in 1914 he registered as a conscientious objector and volunteered for the ‘Quaker War

CHARLOTTE’S CAKE CORNER Fudgy Chocolate Celebration Cake

9.

Pour evenly between the tins and place in the oven for 30 minutes. To check the cake is ready, insert a knife into the centre. If the knife comes out with a lot of mix on, place back into the oven for a further 10 minutes. You are looking for the knife to be a little dirty. 10. Allow the cakes to cool. 11. When the ganache is set it will be firm but spreadable. You are now ready to start icing the cake. Start by sandwiching the cakes together. Then cover the top and work your way along the sides until the ganache covers the whole cake. 12. You can decorate the cake however you want but here I have used fresh strawberries, Maltesers and chocolate shards.

Serves 10

For the Cake : Plain flour 420 grams Caster Sugar 630 grams Baking Powder 3 tsp Cocoa Powder 100 grams Eggs 2 large Vanilla extract 3tsp Oil 160ml Milk 380ml Boiling Water 380ml For the Ganache : Double Cream 500ml Dark Chocolate 250 grams Milk Chocolate 250 grams

Top tips You can make the ganache from your favourite chocolate. Just ensure you stick to the ratios of 50% chocolate to 50% cream.

Method: 1. Start by making the chocolate ganache. To do this chop your chocolate into small chunks. Place into a medium size bowl. 2. Place the cream in a saucepan, on the hob, over a medium heat. Stir the cream continually to prevent it from catching. The aim being to gently warm the cream, not to simmer or boil it. 3. When the cream is hot, pour over the chocolate and leave for 10 minutes. Stir the mixture until smooth and silky. Leave to one side to reach room temperature, then place into the fridge to set for an hour. 4. Meanwhile, you can begin making the sponge. Preheat the oven to 180C/160C Fan/Gas 4. 5. Line two deep 9 inch cake tins with greaseproof paper. 6. In a large bowl sieve the flour, baking powder and cocoa powder together and mix in the sugar. 7. In a large jug combine the eggs, milk, oil and vanilla extract. 8. Pour the jug mix into the dry ingredients and gently stir until fully combined. Whilst stirring slowly add in the boiling water. The mix will be very runny, do not worry, this is what will give the cake its fudgy texture.

You can make the ganache a day in advance. Just leave it in the fridge overnight and remove it about an hour before you would want to start icing. If you want a polished look to the cake, when decorating, you can heat up a metal pallet knife with boiling water, dry it using a teatowel, and go around the cake. This will ensure sharp edges and a neat finish.

TALKING PETS WITH VIKING VETS - MARIA LOWE, MRCVS facing the busy summer season. A few weeks ago I saw a lovely Staffy called Baby. The owners were concerned about her odd gait coming down the stairs. I took one look at her and thought she had something seriously wrong. We ran some bloods and found her liver enzymes to be sky high, so we decided to perform an ultrasound. It looked like something was going through the liver, diaphragm and into the chest. After draining the chest of 75 ml of fluid we took Baby to surgery. We located the end of a wooden skewer in the stomach, opened the stomach and pulled a 25 cm skewer out! Baby made a complete recovery in just a few days much to our surprise. So, please make sure you do not leave any skewers, corn on the cob ( the core of corn on the cob is probably the most common foreign body we remove from dogs, the core is not broken down by the stomach. Don’t even put them on compost heaps, they don’t break down) for the dogs to pick up.

The world has been going through an event that thankfully so far seem to be happening every 100 years. Unfortunately due to our increasing interconnected world, it may be less then 100 year until the next pandemic. We are by no means anywhere near back to normal. The virus will be reoccurring and we have to be vigilant in our response to this to avoid a full lock down again. We will not know which national strategy was the best until at least a year has passed. Who protected the population whilst also saving the economy. It is also important to remember that strict strategies that they are able to implement in some Asian countries, would not be tolerated here. Life at Viking Vets has changed a great deal. All clients are seen outside, pets are taken into the building, or seen in the outside consulting tent. The dogs have been surprisingly happy about this. I think it is years worth of bribery and kind words. Indoors we wear masks since we are unable to keep a 2 metre distance when handling the pets. We have a buddy that we work with in case there is an outbreak amongst the team, we have only been close to one colleague. I just want to give a small BBQ warning as we are

As a long-standing, independent firm of solicitors in Henleaze, our office at 100 Henleaze Road has served the local residents since 1953 through many challenging times. The changes to all of our personal circumstances and the risks to local businesses have made the last 3 months perhaps the most worrying time for our clients in the local community. We have shared your anxiety and worry at a time when the safety of loved ones has been paramount. Since the Government lockdown in March, our solicitors and support staff, the majority of whom reside in the local area and whose children attend the local schools, have continued to support and comfort our clients through this most troubling period. During lockdown we have held many client meetings by telephone and video conferencing and we have continued to conduct home visits for our elderly and vulnerable clients where it has been essential to do so. We are immensely proud of all of our departments for their outstanding client service in these times. Whilst there has been anxiety and apprehension about travelling in lockdown, which will continue in the weeks to come, we fully understand that our clients still need to put their affairs in order and to ensure the same for their parents and children. 66

We are pleased to say that we have reopened our offices at 100 Henleaze Road and 139 Whiteladies Road. Our reopening has been subject to ensuring the safety of our clients, staff and contractors when on site.We have restructured our reception area and ensured a safe, ground floor walkway from our front door to our meeting rooms so that our clients will have a very short ‘walk zone’ upon entry and exit from the offices. We have positioned an ‘anti-bac’ station, masks, gloves, floor disks and multiple protective screens in the reception and meeting rooms. Our new layout will ensure we can safely achieve social distancing between solicitors and clients at all times. For non-essential face-to-face meetings, we will continue to offer client appointments by telephone or video conferencing.

To speak to one of our team and learn more on arranging an appointment in the office or by home visit, please telephone 0117 962 1205 or email to info@amdsolicitors.com We look forward to seeing you again and to helping you through what is likely to be another challenging period for the second half of 2020.

The Downs : After much lobbying Council officers have now obtained a court order covering all of the Downs, so it should be simpler and quicker to evict unlawful traveller encampments. MUSIC NOW AND THEN - DUNCAN HASKELL Next Step

Album of the Month Homegrown by Neil Young (Reprise)

Brian Wilson Presents Smile by Brian Wilson (Nonesuch)

This month we’re taking a time capsule back to one of the finest hot streaks in music history, courtesy of this impossibly-delayed release from Neil Young. Had it come out in 1975, as planned, it might have shared the stage with his classic albums Tonight’s The Night and Zuma. Raising expectations even further, Young calls it the missing link between Harvest, Comes A Time, Old Ways and Harvest Moon.

As far as “lost albums” go, The Beach Boys’ Smile has to be right up there. There are many reasons why it’s intended 1967 didn’t happen, Brian Wilson’s mental health struggles being of particular significanance. Instead, the watered down Smiley Smile came out and couldn’t live up to it’s predecessor, Pet Sounds. In 2014, Wilson finally completed what his band had started and released his new version of Smile. An explosion of ideas and orchestration, the tracks were split up into three movements “Americana”, “Cycle of Life” and “The Elements” – with themes such as childhood, fatherhood and spirituality.

So why the delay? Inspired by his faltering relationship with Carrie Snodgress, Young couldn’t bring himself to finish the album or listen to the songs, describing it as, “The sad side of a love affair. The damage done. The heartache… I wanted to move on.”

Wilson’s voice, lacking the full glory of its 60s peak, still had a naïve charm which perfectly matched songs like Barnyard and Cabin Essence. Styles rolled in and out like the tide, leaving musical brick-a-brac on the sand for him to pick up and play with.

Though that melancholy undertone is perceptible from the start, the songs are never maudlin or offputting… for the listener at least. Opener Separate Ways has that immediately recognisable loose groove, with The Band’s Levon Helm providing the beat. The piano ballad Mexico has a similar floating quality to After The Goldrush and Love Is A Rose recycles his own song, Dance Dance Dance.

In this new context, Heroes and Villains, Surf’s Up and Good Vibrations had loftier company to share their qualities with, and the listener had a fuller picture of what we missed out on all those years ago.

As it’s a largely acoustic affair, the more rocking numbers We Don’t Smoke It, Vacancy and the title track bring a nice contrast. This really is a master at the peak of his powers; equally comfortable when reclining or raging.

Podcast of the Month Wind of Change This podcast will appeal to fans of conspiracy theories just as much as it will those of the German heavy metal band Scorpions. Over eight episodes, investigative journalist Patrick Radden Keefe is on a mission to find out whether or not the CIA were actually the writers of the group’s worldwide hit – a whole cast of intriguing characters combine to keep this series fascinating from start to finish.

The fact that a handful of these songs have made their way out into the world previously doesn’t undermine their appearance here. Take Little Wing, the opening track of Hawks & Dove. Here, Young’s pleading for the titular figure not to fly away with the fading summer is imbued with the added weight provided by the rest of the album. It’s not inconceivable that Homegrown could have achieved similar levels of success to Harvest. That Young could walk away from that prospect is probably all you need to know about his singlemindedness as an artist. With his heartache now faded, we can finally enjoy this masterpiece.

SUSWOT - GROWING DURING LOCKDOWN For many years Sustainable Westbury-on-Trym has worked to increase the amount of food grown in Westbury’s gardens. SusWoT has done this by providing vegetable plants and seeds at low prices. Tomatoes were the first vegetable offered but many followed. Seeds were sold in small packets for 50p, so rather than having 1000 lettuce seeds and wasting most of them a sensible number could be had more cheaply. The seeds and plants sold were chosen for being suitable for the local area, largely clay!

on the task of growing plants from seed. During the lockdown local street groups were being set up. SusWoT members contacted their local groups to spread the word that SusWoT was still offering seeds and plants. Other social media were also used. Two people managed the orders and coordinated the distribution. Most people came to front gardens whilst exercising and took their purchases without seeing anybody. Where customers were housebound, SusWoT arranged delivery, sometimes by other neighbouring customers. People paid by bank transfer or left cash.

The Get Growing Trail through Bristol is the culmination of SusWoT’s efforts to Get People Growing. It comes at the perfect time for planting out beans, tomatoes, squash, courgettes, brassicas and other vegetables. It’s late for sowing some seeds but SusWoT offer beetroot seeds that can be sown until August. SusWoT bought its seeds early this year. Seven hundred tomato seeds were sown from January onwards. In March lockdown began and gardening activity increased as people rediscovered their gardens. By April seed suppliers were overwhelmed and garden centres had been shut for a month. Plants sent from nurseries to customers were dying in the post. Conditions were perfect for selling vegetable plants and seeds locally. How could SusWoT grasp this opportunity to promote ‘grow your own’ during lockdown?

By the beginning of June 1250 plants and 135 packets of seeds had been sold to 130 customers. Perhaps not surprisingly there had been more sales than usual. Fewer tomato plants had been sold but more beans, brassicas and cucurbits. A large number of herbs were sold for the first time. The process has been different to the usual one of targeting the Westbury Fair and Get Growing. Some people have been working hard for weeks processing orders and growing plants. Customers have had to be found rather than them just turning up. But it has been fun and certainly made lockdown a very busy time.

SusWoT’s monthly meetings at the Village Hall were impossible so weekly zoom meetings were set up. Ten SusWoTers planned and executed the sale of seeds and plants. A website page showed what was available and how to get in touch and several people took

IN THE GARDEN WITH CATHY LEWIS Poppies’ delicate, tissue-paper petals are fleeting but what these iconic plants lack in robustness they make up for in vibrancy. There are over 70 different types of poppy but these are some of the most popular…

of horror. It is easy to grow from seed and sits wonderfully in wildflower meadows. Like me, you may have the perennial Welsh poppy (Meconopsis cambrica) growing in your garden where it self-seeds between paving, stone walls and other seemingly inhospitable places. It is pretty, colourful and a generally welcomed guest.

The oriental poppy (Papaver orientale) sports gigantic flowers with the pizzazz and charisma of flamenco dancers. As well as scarlet there are lovely pink and white blooms to choose from, all of which emerge from fat, hairy buds. The plant is perennial and long lived providing you give it plenty of sunshine and welldrained soil. Cut it back after the first flush and it should bloom again in late summer.

The Himalayan poppy (Meconopsis baileyi) is easy to admire for its eye-catching shade of blue. It’s rather fussy though, needing cool conditions and rich, acidic soil to do well. The Icelandic poppy (Papaver nudicaule) is biennial and comes in a range of warm, fiery colours. Unlike most other poppies it makes good cut flowers.

You can get fun and frivolous cultivars of opium poppy (Papaver somniferum) to grow from seed including ruffled petals and pompoms. Colours range from rich pinks to deep purples. Once the petals fall the pepper pot seed heads become features in their own right. I allow mine to self-seed and look forward to new plants popping up wherever they’re happy.

The tangerine and eggy-yellow flowers of the Californian poppy (Eschscholzia californica) have a vibrancy that appears almost radio-active. These are set off to perfection against the glaucous, filigree leaves. It’s a sun-worshiper that thrives in poor, well-drained soil.

The field poppy (Papaver rhoeas) is a dainty flower with powerful symbolism. It produces thousands of tiny seeds which can remain dormant for decades until the soil is disturbed, exposing them to light. This is why battlefields became blanketed with flowers - tiny beacons of beauty in the midst

HISTORY NOTES NO. 149 - JULIAN LEA-JONES (continued from p58)

Lastly, the most unusual bookstores had to be in Seattle. The ‘Clean and Decent place for Books’ had comfortable sofas, and offered discounts between Midnight and 8am! But our favourite must be, ‘Twice Told Tales’ that had many more ‘tales’ than one would expect even in a bookshop. Like Russia’s Empress Elizabeth, who introduced cats into the Hermitage Museum to dispose of nibbling rodents, the owners of Twice Told also have feline staff to deter the mice and cheer the customers. This is done by a series of high-level runways so the cats can thread their way between the rooms via holes through the walls high above the customers, although the cats are happy to come down for smoothing.

the liberation of Jerusalem. Roy had reached a block in his translation and decided to take a break and tackle my book whereupon he was amazed to find that the book’s account of ‘Matilda of Tuscany’ provided the very translation key he had been seeking! His letter to me ended ...”so from [your book find and] these few sentences we have a lead from Tasso, to Cotellini and to Haydn’s musical setting”. Good news for Roy, but sadly it did not provide any further insights into the Templars in Bristol Memorable Bookshops and eccentricities. Do you remember Arthur George’s bookshop on Christmas Steps? The genial Arthur, always recognisable in his Ronnie Barker style brown dustcoat, his endearing slight eccentricity was that even after currency decimalisation he steadfastly continued to price all his books in Pound, Shillings and Pence, LSD. When you came to pay, he would carefully add them up and only convert the total to pounds and pence at the till. However, for an even more bizarre bookshop pricing system go to the Mumbles in Pembrokeshire. Each shelf had at the end, a board with different sized notches. You fitted your selected book in the narrowest slot and read off the adjacent price!

Our mistake was to show the picture to our cat Jenny, who thought it was well worth emulating - but no we have not cut holes through the walls for her.

At the top of Park Street, William George’s (Blackwell’s) had their low cost second- hand books on open shelves outside the Berkeley Square side, a favourite lunchtime hunt for sixpenny bargains.

Eur-Ing. Julian Lea-Jones - C.Eng.,FRAeS © June 2020

Lastly having given some examples of bookshop encounters but what of other bookstores further afield? Working and travelling across the USA provided some unusual book-buying experiences.

Notes (1) Source - Mathews’s Bristol and Clifton directory for 1856.

Visiting the City Lights bookstore in San Francisco, which was the hangout of Timothy Leary, Alan Ginsberg, and Jack Kerouac, the harbingers of the beat crowd. I had just bought a copy of Kerouac’s ‘On the Road’ and, remembering Arthur George’s pricing system, said, “How nice it was that although in England we had changed to decimal currency, Timothy Leary still favoured LSD.” I had to explain.

(3) William George was only 17 when he established his first bookshop, and by the twentieth century they had three shops, on Park Street for New books, Second-hand, and Academic. What probably was not realised was that the business had been bought by Blackwell’s in 1929. Despite the buyout, the shop continued trading under the George’s name until rebrand as the parent company in the 1980s.

WHAT’S ON & COMMUNITY NEWS Listings continue to be a little different this month. Given the current restrictions on gatherings, and the continuing (albeit relaxed) requirement for social distancing, the ongoing operation of many of the clubs, societies, choirs, social groups, fitness sessions and companionship groups remains uncertain. So rather than reiterate activities in each listing that may not now be possible it seemed sensible to just list the local groups who have asked to feature, together with their contact names and details.

So, here are the regularly listed clubs and groups together with ther latest contact details I have. Cardens

Brilliant Sorters of Financial Stuff Hilary Carden, Managing Director of Cardens

Are you asking yourself whether you want to go back to your old work routine? If you’re 50 or over you might be wondering whether early retirement is a possibility. But how can you work this out? Here are 3 simple steps to get you started: Step 1: How much money will you need to live each month?. I like to break this into three categories: Essential, Lifestyle and Discretionary. You then have three possible goals to aim for. Step 2: Put together a list of all your ‘liquid assets’. These include savings and investments and the value of any pension plans. Deduct your outstanding mortgage or any loans to get your total. Don’t include any value from your house unless you definitely want to downsize and release equity. Step 3: Take your total from Step 2 and multiply by 4%. For example, £500,000 x 4% = £20,000 per annum. I must emphasise it’s a very rough rule of thumb to determine what your income could be whilst maintaining capital, but I find it’s a good starting point. If this doesn’t give you the answer you were hoping for, or raises more questions than it answers, why not schedule a free 20 minutes consultation to find out how we can help? Call us now on 0117 209 0259.
