We had a short break on the Gower in South Wales in May and struck it lucky with the weather - the sun was out but the fellow tourists weren’t so we had miles of sand to ourselves. The front cover of the magazine this month is a photo of the path alongside the Phoenix Hedge - an almost mythical place in Henleaze that, I confess, I had my suspicions even existed until I tracked it down yesterday. Now I know it’s a real thing I’ll try and discover more, and share that with you next month.

THEY’VE ARRIVED ........... of Wales are similarly populated, and if you know where to look they are not uncommon, in the air or perched in old woodland. But it seems like years we’ve been asking ourselves when will they arrive here - and now they have. The BOC tell me that they had half a dozen sightings in Bristol in April, and three times that number in the “Avon” area, so they are around. My chance sighting was over Blaise woods just beyond Canford Lane - I thought it was a buzzard being hounded out by the corvid residents, but the sound was wrong and as it fled the characteristic fork tail and rufous red colouring gave his / her identity away. A magnificent and graceful bird and, in my book at least, a very welcome visitor. According to the RSPB there are upwards of 4,500 breeding pairs in the UK now. Keep an eye out - I hope you spot one soon.

Seeing and hearing my first swift of the summer last week (mid-May) was lovely. Seeing a flock of 13 jays fly over was exciting - apparently they are migratory, flying in from Europe, with young birds sometimes flocking when searching for a mate (the Bristol Ornithological Club had a sighting of 23 at Sand Point in late April). But more exciting still is the long-awaited (well, by birding types) arrival to the skies over Bristol of the magnificent red kite. If you’ve travelled towards London over the last few years, and looked to the skies anywhere east of, say, Swindon, you may well have seen red kites, their unmistakable silhouette especially clear against a grey Reading sky. The skies

BRUCE FELLOWS’ BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS Roman Holiday – The Secret Life of Hollywood in Rome does what it says on the cover. From the fifties on, Hollywood’s major figures went there attracted by the sun, the way of life and the studio profits locked up in Italy that could only be spent there. Caroline Young tells their stories in fast and scandal-fuelled style as revealing as the paparazzi that plagued them all. Divorce was a problem for Sophia Loren and Ingrid Bergman; Ava Gardner was the life and soul of the party; most people drank too much; pasta was slimming, apparently. Only Audrey Hepburn lived a sensible life. A fascinating read. On 9/11, Ben Matson loses his girlfriend. He moves on, makes a new and happy life – wife and children - until he hears of a death that brings everything back again. Christopher Priest’s compelling novel An American Story guides us through what happens next and what happened before. The dead man is Tatarov, a scientist Ben once interviewed, his girlfriend was Lil, but why was her body never found? And why were the aircraft’s black boxes not found and why did the Twin Towers, built to resist a plane crash, collapse so easily? Full of mysteries and conspiracies, this book is impossible to put down. For three years in the early 2000s Naveed Jamali, a young American of French and Pakistani origin, sold secret information to the Russians. Prior to this, he’d been desperate to join US Naval Intelligence. When they turned him down, he approached the Russians and reeled in a Russian diplomat/ spy using charm, street smarts and his parents’ book business. He talked the FBI into supporting him and thus unknown to his Russian contact became a double agent. How to Capture a Russian Spy is Naveed’s quirky, exciting and totally gripping account of his career as an amateur but highly successful spy. He now works in Naval Intelligence. Bernhard Schlink’s excellent novel Olga takes its German heroine from the late nineteenth century to the eve of reunification. Clever and driven, Olga comes from a Prussian village and struggles to find a place in society. She falls for the son of a local landowner but despite her intelligence the class divide between them remains a huge chasm and Herbert, her beloved, a model of German manhood, has grandiose ideas which she can’t take seriously. Enthralling and moving, the novel paints a vivid portrait of a woman whom life and its vicissitudes cannot defeat, who right up to the end can still produce a surprise. In Far Eastern Tales, Somerset Maugham takes us back to the by-gone days of the British Empire, where travel was by steamer and long plantation evenings were filled with bridge, dancing to music from the gramophone and simply masses of booze. The loneliness! No internet of course, no TV or even radio. Maugham’s descriptions are precise and vivid, the jungle, the rivers come to life but the most bizarre wildlife is the British population, restrained, laconic, but underneath, savage and passionate and Maugham tells their tales directly, there are no lines to read between. Love, adultery, murder, we get them all. A terrific read. 18

MAYORAL REFERENDUM: Bristolians overwhelmingly voted on 5th May to scrap the role of elected Mayor of Bristol in favour for a more transparent and democratic Committee System. The turnout for the referendum was 29% with 38,439 votes for the Mayoral Model and 56,113 votes for a Committee Model. Thanks to all those who voted.

Party Wall Disputes

Essentially, that will contain various clauses to minimise the damage you suffer as a result of your neighbour’s work and to make good any damage.

In semi-detached and terraced properties issues can sometimes arise about the wall dividing one property from another. What is the position where there is a dispute about that wall - for instance if one neighbour in the course of, say, renovating their kitchen damages your side of the wall . What is the remedy?

Where there has been a failure to deliver such a notice and the work on the wall has just gone ahead then a claim can be made against the offending individual for compensation for breach of his obligations under the Act and possibly also under the law of negligence or nuisance.

On some property transfer deeds it makes clear that the dividing wall is a party wall. It would probably be worth checking the original transfer granted at the time when your house or your neighbour’s house was first sold. That can be obtained from the Land Registry.

The compensation would the cost of making good the damage that has been caused and possibly a small sum for distress and inconvenience. To progress the matter, it would be sensible to get a surveyor (or possibly a builder) to go into both houses, find out what it is that needs doing to rectify matters and give you an estimate of the cost of that.

However a dividing wall is likely to be regarded as a party wall. What that means is that each neighbour owns half the width of the wall. A person can do work on a party wall subject to complying with the requirements of the Party Wall etc. Act 1996. They are supposed to send you a formal notice, stating the work that they propose carrying out. Unless you agree to them doing the work, each side has to appoint their own surveyor who will negotiate the terms of what is known as a party wall award.

Hopefully, it should be possible to negotiate a settlement to but as a last resort you could take the matter to court if it made economic sense to do so. Edward Lyons

TALKING PETS WITH VIKING VETS Senior cats We used to say that each human year is equivalent to seven cat years. This has now been refined, we think a one year old cat equals a 16 year old human physiological, and a two year old cat roughly a 21 year old. Thereafter each human year is four feline years. An eleven year old cat is defined as a senior ( 63 human years) and by 15 they are defined as a super senior. A study done by the Royal Veterinary College reviewing 4009 cat deaths in 2015, found the average age to be 14 years. Indoor cats lived longer than outdoor cats. This is due to more accidents happening outdoors.

With increasing age comes sadly increasing health problems, however a lot can be done to slow the progression of many diseases. The most common issues we see are dental and renal disease, hyperthyroidism and arthritis. We can help our cats with all of these issues as long as we are recognising them in time. What is Intestacy? When an individual dies without making a Will, they are described as having died intestate, which means that their assets and belongings (estate) will be distributed according to the rules of intestacy.

If there is no surviving spouse or civil partner, your child/ren will receive everything. Step children receive nothing, regardless of how long you cared for them unless you have legally adopted them if there is no Will to stipulate they should inherit.

Currently, only 43% of adults in the UK have a Will. This means there are over 31 million people without a Will who are risking having their estate being left to individuals that they may not have chosen. They are also risking inheritance tax being paid on their death as they cannot control who ultimately gets their estate.

If you die intestate leaving no surviving spouse or civil partner, your estate will be distributed in a strict order from closest blood relatives to furthest. If there are no surviving blood relatives and no valid Will, the estate goes to the Crown which is called ‘Bona Vacantia’.

In England and Wales, if you have a surviving spouse or civil partner and children and you do not have a Will, the law states that your spouse receives all of your personal possessions, known as chattels. Your spouse also receives £270,000 and 50% of the balance of the rest of the estate, known as the residue. The child/ren receive the other 50% of the balance of the estate.

This is just a brief outline of the rules of intestacy, which is a very complex area. Avoiding the issues that can arise is simple – to protect your estate and ensure your intentions are clear and adhered to, organise your Will today for your peace of mind.

THIS BS9 LIFE - DUNCAN HASKELL Helped by Stephen Merchant’s obvious affection for and knowledge of the city, and ignoring the occasionally dubious attempt at a Bristol accent, I thoroughly enjoyed the action/drama/comedy Outlaws when it aired on the BBC last year. One unexpected result of that enjoyment has been that parts of town I’d previously paid little attention to have become key destinations on my very own TV tour.

So what are the most iconic? In terms of buildings, it really doesn’t get any bigger than the BBC Natural History Unit on Whiteladies Road – the home of groundbreaking series such as Frozen Planet, Blue Planet and Springwatch and very much at the centre of our city’s wildlife filmmaking.

On a slightly different note, the bench installed at Ashton Court to mark the final series of Ricky Gervais’ After Life show has become a frequent rest point on our walks round the estate. Featuring the words ‘Hope is Everything’, as well as a QR code linking to the charity CALM, it’s somewhere to stop for a moment of quiet reflection.

One of the most famous locations in British sitcom history can be found just a stone’s throw from Ashton Gate stadium. Whitemead House, or Nelson Mandela House as it’s known on screen, was the home of Derek and Rodney Trotter from series 6 of Only Fools and Horses onwards. Then there’s the teen drama Skins, so ubiquitous with the city that you can even download a map of its filming locations from the Visit Bristol website – closest to home is Blaise Castle House Museum which apparently turned up in Series 4 Episode 3.

Taken together, this got me thinking about other essential points on a television tour of Bristol and I quickly realised that it would be a case of what to leave out rather than trying to pad out any such tour with the locations of numerous minor injuries featured on Holby City.

With the likes of Poldark, His Dark Materials (with a scene shot at Blaise Orangery), Sherlock and many others using our iconic city for key moments and locations, I’m curious to know what makes your list of essential television tourist hotspots. Let me know via editor any@bcmagazines.

It’s now impossible for me to drive by Sea Mills Community Centre without thinking of Merchant and his gang of misfits doing their best not to do their community service. Similarly, I can’t walk by The George Inn in Shirehampton without hoping to catch a glimpse of Christopher Walken mid pint.

Separation for Unmarried Couples - A Hidden Sting in the Tail

When unmarried couples own a property together and experience a relationship breakdown, one of the main things they will need to consider is what to do with the property they live in. They may decide that one party will buy the other out or they may sell the property altogether. This situation is very common, however separating couples often do not consider the tax liabilities which may arise.

Unmarried couples may agree that just one of them will take over ownership of a property they bought together, including any outstanding mortgage. The person taking ownership will pay SDLT on the total ‘chargeable consideration’ if it exceeds the SDLT threshold. The current SDLT threshold is £125,000. Chargeable consideration includes any cash payment that one makes to the other for their share and the proportion of any outstanding mortgage in relation to the share of the property being transferred. The 3% surcharge applicable to the purchase of additional properties should not be in point even if more than one property is owned but care does need to be taken that exemption from the surcharge applies.

Capital Gains Tax

Stamp Duty Land Tax (‘SDLT’) may apply where the property is going to be transferred from joint names to one party’s sole name. In this situation, the person that is acquiring the share of the property may be liable to pay SDLT.

Capital Gains Tax (‘CGT’) can apply when a property is sold or transferred. The tax is charged on any gain that the property has realised - if it has risen in value since it was bought, CGT will apply.

If property is transferred because of divorce, legal separation or the end of a civil partnership there is no SDLT payable. However if the joint owners are unmarried and not in a civil partnership when they transfer the property from joint names then they may have to pay SDLT. This tax often catches unmarried co-owners by surprise. It is important to work out this cost early and factor it into consideration when reaching an agreement.

CGT is not normally chargeable if the property is your main home as principal private residence relief will apply. However, it is chargeable if the property is your second home or if you have not been living there for more than nine months prior to the sale. If you are an unmarried couple and your relationship breaks down, this is worth consideration because if you move out and the property is sold more than nine months later, CGT will be chargeable on a proportion of the gain equal to

the period where principal private residence relief cannot be claimed. It also applies where an unmarried couple own two or more properties, ie one being the main home and the other being a property which is rented out. In this scenario CGT would be payable on any gain made on the sale of the property which has been rented out. You will pay CGT if your overall gains for the tax year are above the annual exempt amount. For 2021/22 the annual exempt amount it £12,300. Certain payments made to improve a property may be deductible to reduce any gain.

VIEW FROM THE LORD MAYOR’S PARLOUR I’m only a couple of weeks away from the end of my incredible year as your Lord Mayor. I think it will take some time to look back over everything at the end and process it properly, but for the moment life is as busy as ever with engagements.

I was also a guest at the 80th anniversary parade for the Avonmouth Sea Cadets at TS Enterprise, and guest speaker for the “Tuesday Together” lunch here in BS9 at Westbury Baptist Church.

One of the nice things about this role is being able to carry on ancient traditions in our city. One of those is the creation of “Burgesses” or “Freemen” of the City. Historically this was a status granted by the Mayor to someone who had completed a seven-year apprenticeship which allowed them to carry on a trade in their own right in Bristol. Today its value is purely historical but the tradition continues. It was a pleasure in early May to make my colleague Cllr Geoff Gollop a Burgess of the City of Bristol.

There has also been a bit of a nautical theme to the month. The 2nd May saw the 525th anniversary of the Matthew’s famous crossing to Newfoundland. It was great to be able to join the celebrations on board and thank the amazing team of volunteers who look after her. On a slightly sadder note, the Pride of Bristol leaves the city on the same day that I hand over my chains. She will move to the Royal Naval Museum in Hartlepool, where she will continue her mission of providing training and adventure to young people. It was a real honour to steer her home up the Avon Gorge and into the entrance lock of Bristol Harbour for the last time (under very close supervision from Captain Bob Baker of course). Thank you to the team who have looked after her and brought so much benefit to Bristol over the years.

Speaking of awarding honours, the University of Bristol is currently catching up on graduation ceremonies for people who completed their degrees during Covid. I was invited to be a guest at a graduation ceremony for 2020 graduates. I’m usually the only person in the room wearing a robe, so this made a nice change! I’ve had the chance to visit various groups and charities around Bristol over the last few weeks. It was an inspiration to visit Empire Fighting Chance in Easton and see the work that they do using boxing as

A new charity and a new challenge

Sir George pays well and looks after his people”. “What about the science chappy, what does he do?” “I don’t know exactly, I know he is foreign, and I think he designs flying machines for Sir George”.

Imagine this if you will. It is the early 1900’s and a Henleaze resident notices a young man with long dark hair and a rather bohemian air walking along Westbury Road The young man seems to be deep in thought, and every now and then, he stopped, retrieved a notebook from his pocket and made a few notes before continuing on his way, only to pause again after a few minutes to repeat the process before resuming his walk. Who is he? He looks too old to be a student at the University College. Perhaps he is a lecturer at Bristol’s new University. His steps take him to a house opposite Cote House estate, (later to become the site of Lady Monica Wills’ home for retired gentlewomen), not far from the turning to Henleaze Gardens. Who is he - a visitor? He seems be quite young to own such a large house.

It turns out that the interlocuter’s ‘science chappy’ was arguably the most worldfamous person to ever live on Westbury Road and certainly the only person to have a national airport named after them. Have you guessed who he was? Henri Marie Coandă, the young man seen on Westbury Road and photographed on the steps of old Filton House, was born in Romania in 1886. After finishing high school in 1903 he enrolled at the Engineering School of Bucharest, subsequently going to Germany where he obtained his PhD in Engineering Sciences at Technische Hochschule. Henri later went to France, to enter the Superior School of Aeronautic, where he graduated as valedictorian - as top student he was given the honour of giving the Valedictory address. He then began his engineering career with the famous French engineer Gustave Eiffel, with whom he became a close friend. In 1910 he created and tested the first jet aircraft in the world called the Coandă 1910, which he presented at the International Aeronautics Exhibition; However, the concept was too powerful

Interestingly older readers may remember from the 1950s the concept of twin rear mounted engines in the Sud Aviation Caravelle commercial transport aeroplane. Not generally known is the fact that Coandă, by then nearing retirement, was employed by Sud Aviation as a design consultant. It must have been a proud moment for Henri to see his 1916 concept take to the skies, at speeds of which he could only have dreamt.

and too heavy on fuel consumption for the frail wood and cloth aeroplanes of the day. Thus propellors would continue to be their driving force until the English inventor, Frank Whittle, in 1930 patented a practical Turbojet. Whittle’s invention heralded the Jet Age, (a web search for ‘Farnborough Air Sciences Trust Museum’ will provide details and images of of Sir Frank Whittle’s breakthrough invention). Henri brought his bump of curiosity to Bristol and became Sir George’s Technical Director at the new Bristol and Colonial Aeroplane Company and was one of the aviation pioneers responsible for establishing Bristol as a world-renowned centre for aviation. In 1912 his BristolCoandă Monoplanes aircraft featured at the International Military Aviation Contest, one of which won the first prize and two of which were purchased by the Royal Flying Corps.

After a long life during which he was lauded many times for his scientific discoveries, Coandă eventually returned to Romania in 1970, dying there in 1972. In 2004, Bucharest Otopeni International Airport was renamed the Henri Coandă International Airport in his honour. Henri had over 2,000 patents to his credit, but it was for his 1934 patent concerning the phenomena of fluid flow (an aerodynamic surface effect), known worldwide as the ‘Coandă Effect’, that he is still best known. Tech To Help With Disabilities Technology often seems to drive many of my clients up the wall (with some justification at times!), but I do like to remind people of some of the good that can come of developments, particularly with regard to health and helping with disabilities. Apple recently marked Global Accessibility Day by unveiling plans to extend its existing accessibility features with machine learning to provide sophisticated solutions to help people with disabilities get around, communicate, care for their health, and more. Apple’s latest Watch already has the capability to monitor your heart rate, blood oxygen levels, and even do an ECG - here are some more interesting services being rolled out imminently by Apple and other manufacturers...... Door Detection A tool that helps people who are blind or have low vision navigate the last few feet to their destination. AROUND THE WORLD IN EIGHTY DISHES - THE U.S.A. After last months South Korean soujourn - hope you liked it - the BS9 international food road show has arrived in the United States of America, and brings you a classic Louisianna sandwich known as a Po’boy.

can’t grasp the beautiful game of cricket, I absolutely loved it. And secondly the cuisine I encountered seemed to consist of taking a full grown meal and sticking it in a sandwich. I had a fish sandwich that was three whole fillets of breaded fish (of some sort) bursting out of a bap, and a pastrami, saurkraut and sliced cheese sandwich where the monster portion of “fries” was included with everything else between the slices of bread. Tasty - yes. Subtle - no. So, the Po’boy follows a similar style. It’s a big sandwich filled with fried Cajun prawns and salad, topped with a special sauce. I think the real star of this recipe is the remoulade, and after all, who doesn’t like a good remoulade? OK, no, I’d not heard of it either. It’s a sort of glorified spicy mayonnaise - its origins are European but has been adopted and well nurtured by the Americans. When you see the ingredients and mix them all together you’d be forgiven for thinking lordy, what a strange mix - this is going to be potent. Yet an alchemy takes place in the bowl and, while never dull, it doesn’t incinerate your taste buds. Of course you can add a little more or less of any ingredient to taste. I love the simplicity of “hot sauce” - it’s a sauce and it’s hot, it’s hot sauce. There’s all sorts on the market just choose something that matches your level of hotness and sauciness.

Named (according to legend) in recognition of striking streetcar conductors in the 1920’s, where the “poor boys” were served filling sandwiches by sympathetic local restauranteurs, the Po’boy has become a classic of Creole cuisine. Now, at the risk of alienating the population of the most powerful nation on earth, I must confess I’ve never felt the urge to go to the USA - it’s just never got close to the top of my must-go travel list. However I did have the opportunity to go there with work about 20 years ago and spent a week in Pittsburgh. It was a largely forgettable experience, barring two things. The first was the baseball - I got to see the Pirates play and, for all my reservations about it being rounders on steroids, for those who

the panko breadcrumbs, salt and Cajun seasoning. 7. Now, prawn by prawn go along the line - using tongs makes this easier but you can use fingers - coating your prawn first all over with flour, then beaten egg before letting it swim around in the breadcrumbs getting all coated and crispy. When fully coated place your prawn carefully on the final plate. 8. Repeat 23 times for the remaining prawns. Of course you can do extra prawns if you want to, and depending on the size of your bread roll you may end up with a few crispy prawny spares at the end - for tasting purposes. 9. Time to fry. In a large fring pan add sunflower oil to a depth of about 1cm, and heat until it reasonably hot - not smoking but a breadcrumb dropped in should immediately sizzle. 10. Add half of your prawns gently into the pan and let them sizzle away for about 3 minutes, by which time the prawns should be visibly pink (where you can see through the crispy coating). Turn the prawns over to cook the other side for a similar period, by which time the prawns will be cooked through and the batter nice and golden. Remove the cooked prawns and leave to rest on kitchen paper while you cook the second batch of prawns. 11. Time to serve. Split your bread / roll along the side, leaving a little uncut hinge, and open up. Spread both open faces generously with the remoulade, add in the shredded lettuce and sliced tomato, and then place all the crispy prawns on top. Close the bread lid, prepare your jaws for some serious exercise and get stuck in. It’s a real tasty mouthful.

2 heaped teaspoons of Dijon mustard 8 heaped teaspoons of mayonnaise 1 heaped teaspoon of creamed horseradish 1 teaspoon of hot sauce (any you like tabasco, sriracha etc) 1 tablespoon smoked paprika 2 teaspoons of Cajun seasoning 1 large clove of garlic, crushed 1 lime - zest and juice

First, prepare the remoulade. This can be done well in advance. In a small bowl add all the remoulade ingredients, stir well, cover with clingfilm and pop in the fridge to cool. Finely shred your lettuce - I used a little gem as it has a much nicer taste than an iceberg lettuce which, frankly, has no taste at all. Slice your tomatoes, removing the stalky but as you go. Now get yourself ready to do your prawns - this is a military exercise requiring precise organisation - OK, it’s not tricky at all but uses lots of crockery. Take three bowls and put them side by side on the worktop. At either end place a dinner plate. On plate one place your prawns, and pat them dry with some kitchen paper. Half fill bowl 1 with the flour, bowl 2 with the beaten egg and bowl 3 with 52

THERAPY DEMYSTIFIED - NIGE’ OLLIS With mental health issues, and awareness of them, very much in the public eye - a situation seemingly exacerbated by the uncertainties and isolation that came with the pandemic - it seems a good time to have a look at what is out there in terms of understanding, support and possible treatment. In the first of an occasional series we start with an overview of the world of “therapy” by therapeutic coach Nige’ Olis

“What is therapy? How can it help me, and what might happen in sessions?

I’m sure you may’ve seen the headlines: we’re facing a mental health crisis in this country. The headlines aren’t entirely a terrible thing, though, in the sense that during the past decade mental health awareness has begun to slowly emerge from the stigma that caused people to avoid speaking about their mental wellbeing. However, it’s a myth that you need to reach crisis point before reaching out and benefitting from therapy.

I need some help with anger; I wish I could stop feeling anxious; I am so stressed; I’m finding it difficult to manage my emotions; I can’t decide whether or not I should make this decision; I can’t let go of this guilt; will I ever get past this loss/grief; I’m finding it difficult to manage existing relationships or develop healthy new ones; I’m tired of feeling overwhelmed; I can’t remember the last time I had a decent night’s sleep; I haven’t been able to drive since the accident; I’ve had enough of being in constant pain and/or fatigue; the things I used to be interested in no longer bring me joy; I want to change this pattern of behaviour.

As I say, this list is by no means exhaustive but may reflect the more common situations and thinking patterns that could subsequently be impacted by seeking therapy. And while it may take courage to take that first step, the therapeutic environment is intentionally a nurturing, safe space open to truly understand ourselves. We may talk to friends and family about the things I’ve listed, but it won’t necessarily help us discover the root causes that underpin what we’re thinking and feeling, and may actually inhibit our ability to heal, or move past difficult or painful experiences.

In reality, as well as improving your overall mental wellbeing, therapy can help show you a way forward when you feel stuck, while also potentially enhancing your existing and future relationships. So, what are the signs that suggest therapy might be worth contemplating? While it’s true such a list could prove exhaustive, you may increasingly begin to notice you frequently think things like:

tools and techniques to effectively allow emotion to simply be – that allows you to feel comfortable with feeling uncomfortable – it can be both enlightening and incredibly freeing. Suppressing perceived negative emotion, or experiences, also takes a huge amount of central nervous system energy. However, our culture has done an excellent job at emotion suppression, at both ends of the spectrum. e.g. Upset? Don’t cry. A bit too happy? Calm down!

My personal goal will always be to allow the client to be seen and heard, without judgement, paving the way for desired, lasting change. In the months ahead I hope to further use these occasional articles to continue to help demystify therapy, the therapeutic process and create a deeper understanding of mental health awareness and wellbeing.”

So, what might happen in sessions? Well, it’s certainly true that every therapist is different – even those trained in the same modalities will bring with them their own life experience and wisdom – and there are many different modalities. However, when you discover the right jigsaw fit for you, the side-effect is likely transformative, helping to complete the picture. Therapy

MUSIC - PRESENT, PAST AND PODCAST - DUNCAN HASKELL Album Of The Month How To Let Go by Sigrid

Next Step Emotion by Carly Rae Jepsen Sigrid has spoken of many influences, Coldplay, Neil Young and Joni Mitchell being just three of the artists who have helped shape her approach to music. But rather than take our next step straight from the source, we’re recommending you check out another sophisticated modern pop album instead.

This last month has been a bountiful one for new music. As a result, we’d strongly recommend that you check out the latest albums from Kendrick Lamar, Fontaines D.C., Kurt Vile and Florence + The Machine. Our attention though is turning to Norway, where Sigrid has just dropped something of a pop masterpiece.

Canada’s Carly Rae Jepsen will forever be best known for 2012’s Call Me Maybe. Though arguably one of the greatest moments in popular music history, it’s just the tip of a deeply rewarding iceberg. Perhaps most rewarding of all is her glacier cool third studio album Emotion from 2015. In collaboration with some of the era’s finest writers, including Dev Hines, Sia, Greg Kurstin and Peter Svensson, the album’s 15 tracks (based on the essential Deluxe edition) are a collection of age-defying synthpop gems.

There’s always a point when your favourite musician or band takes things to the next level. For some (John Peel being a very famous example) that evolution and expansion in sound is the point where they lose interest. Unable to enjoy what was once rough, ready and unpolished now that it’s had some of the edges have been softened and the audience being aimed at is a much larger one. The rest of us can sit back and enjoy a collection of bold and surprisingly eclectic songs, all held together by Sigrid’s enthusiasm and commitment to the music.

Featuring songs such as Run Away With Me, I Really Like You and Your Type, the album starts firmly in the mainstream before venturing to more experimental fringes on its second half. It’s an album that has something for everyone; wherever you lower your sonic grabber you’ll come back up with a winning song. Taken as a whole though, it’s one of the most compelling pop statements of the last decade.

Of course, like most pop albums, the singles tend to pack the biggest (sucker)punch. They also give a taste of what to expect across the record’s 12 tracks. There’s a real sense of community here, so come out of the city and enjoy a summer stroll in BS9. WoT Ukrainian Welcome Hub to open on 1 June Westbury Churches are working together to open a local ‘Hub’ for Ukrainian guest and their hosts. Westbury-on-Trym Methodist Church will be open on Wednesday mornings, 10.00am – 12.30pm to allow guests and hosts to socialise over refreshments and cakes. There will be provision for young children and the volunteers will be able to guide people to access other help. The initial meeting took place with representatives from the Methodist Church, Parish Church, Baptist Church and St Mary’s Stoke Bishop, a local host and a representative from the Avonmouth Foodbank.
