Co-Curricular Activities THE BRITISH SCHOOL AL KHUBAIRAT

SECONDARY TERM 1

CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES (CCAs) AT BSAK

At BSAK, our world class curriculum is delivered alongside an array of engaging co-curricular and enrichment activities, which complement each other in providing students with opportunities to explore new interests, deepen thinking and develop their talents.

BSAK’s Secondary CCA programme offers students from Years 7 to 13, a range of activities outside of the core curriculum to promote intellectual challenge, broaden and deepen experiences, as well as providing opportunities to develop leadership and teamwork skills.

We are extremely proud of this exceptional and unique extended academic enrichment provision, which is carefully designed to deliver the very best opportunities for all students. Sixth Form students will support the delivery of clubs where possible to add to the experience. Not only are these students excellent role models for our younger students, but this also gives them the invaluable opportunity to build their own interests and skills in preparation for life beyond school.

In addition to clubs included in this booklet, we have an outstanding range of sporting, dramatic and musical co-curricular activities which have not been included here. Sign-up for these clubs will be conducted through various trials and auditions, which students are made aware of throughout the year. Information regarding how to sign up and the timeline involved, including at what stage of the application process you will know if your child has been successful in obtaining a place in the CCA, will be shared with you via the Parent Portal. Please note that some clubs offer limited numbers and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

● All students who are not enrolled in a CCA for that day need to have arrangements in place to be off school site by 2:50pm.

● For students who are enrolled in a CCA that day, arrangements need to be in place for them to be off school site promptly after the end of their final CCA session.

There are two CCA sessions per day, Monday – Thursday:

● Registers are taken for our internal records and safeguarding; however, due to the voluntary nature of secondary school CCAs attendance will not be tracked or followed up on as per normal school attendance.

● In the rare event that students are enrolled in a CCA in Session 2 but not Session 1, they are required to sign into the secondary library where they can complete some independent study. The secondary library is open daily until 3:45pm and can be used for quiet study/reading.

● Students who have a CCA in Session 2, but not in Session 1, are not permitted to leave the school site between 2.40-3.45pm and will be refused entry back into the school site if they do so.

Physics Olympiad

Years 10, 11, 12 & 13

British Physics Olympiad - The BPhO is to encourage the study of physics and to recognise excellence in young physicists through fifteen annual physics competitions. Why not take the challenge!

How do students get to the level of solving Olympiad problems? It sounds like an impossible task. You need to practise on questions. Look at the past papers relevant to your age group. They are generally harder than the ones you will get in class, but that does not matter.

One of the key aspects that will help is to work with a friend or a small group and discuss a question each week. Someone chooses one or two and you try them out. You do not have to succeed in everything, but you need to have thought about the question so that you can engage in a discussion and see what it is that got you stuck.

Choose ones that are on a topic you have covered recently. Do not expect them to be easily solved - you have to think about them for some time. But you get better; more confident and a little faster perhaps, and you learn not to be defeated and give up.
