HEADMASTER’S REVIEW
‘Success is no accident It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do ’
This inspirational quote from possibly the greatest footballer ever, Pele, really sums up the BSAK approach to sport To learn from everything including when it does not go to plan, to persevere through challenges and to love what you do. This is BSAK Sport.
The hours our sportsmen and women, our coaches and our parents put in, to ensure all preparations are in place for success, are a key component to why BSAK has such an exciting sports programme. But no preparation is greater than learning from challenges.
Our success is evident at the hundreds of fixtures and tournaments we play. It is evident from our GCSE PE and BTEC Sport Science academic results, and it is evident in the culture of sport we exemplify on a daily basis.
I was asked to draw upon some special moments from the extensive BSAK sporting calendar This task alone is not a simple one due to the success BSAK has once again experienced in the sporting arena and the amount of opportunities we have created
For me, school sport is about creating opportunities for students to participate and compete This may be within a PE lesson, a House Competition, in school fixtures or on the international stage. I am very proud that there are a multitude of levels in which our students can compete, ensuring we strike the fine balance between mass participation and elite competition. It takes a special PE Department to achieve this and the BSAK Team really has mastered this aspect.
There are many wonderful memories I have of the year. The highlights include; the continued growth of cricket and golf as competitive sports at BSAK, competing against schools from Dubai in Rugby, Football and Netball, the amazing BSAK 7s series, hosting a superb U13 BSME Games, participating in the BSME Games at every age category, seeing our swim programme move to another level of competitiveness, having a number of students reach the pinnacle of international competition, including one of our Alumni gain a full International Cap representing Wales at Rugby It really has been a year to behold and I am so proud that BSAK supports students at every level and every age access sport This is vitally important
It has been a spectacular year for sport with our extensive fixture lists and competitions, but for me, although great to win, I am more excited that our sports programme is another part of the BSAK that supports the development of character, of resilience, of passion, of good people.
This is what sport means to me and I am so proud to see that on a daily basis at BSAK. It is this culture that shapes our legacy and that of our students.
Mark Leppard MBE HeadmasterREFLECTION A YEAR IN SPORT
This year has seen BSAK students compete in so many different sports and activities We are very proud of our sporting programme, as we aspire to introduce students to as many sporting events and activities as possible.
This year we have created more competitive teams than ever before. Many age groups now have three competitive teams per age group, which is fantastic, and means that more BSAK students are participating in competitive sport.
Sport enables our students to develop the values that we hold dear at BSAK. Resilience and endeavour are two of the School’s values that we see students showcase on a daily basis, and they never fail to represent BSAK in a positive light at so many events throughout the competitive season.
This year we have seen our BSME representative teams on the podium for the whole event We are very proud of the fact that within these major events we have been crowned both Football and Netball champions at different age categories
We continue to foster amazing team spirit and it is lovely to see our students support each other in their pursuit of sporting excellence. We have a rich sporting heritage and with the commitment of the PE team and our amazing students we expect this to continue for a long time.
We never plateau at BSAK. We are always striving for more and this year has seen BSAK enter additional tournaments and events, and competing in the best sporting opportunities the region has to offer. We are excited for the year ahead but we would like to use the Sports Awards ceremony of 2024 to recognise our fabulous community. Teachers, parents, governors, PE team but most importantly our wonderful students.
NOMINATIONS TEAM OF THE YEAR
BSAK TRITONS
The BSAK Tritons had a fantastic inaugural season with 45 members from Primary and Secondary school regularly attending training sessions focused on the three disciplines of triathlon: swimming, cycling, and running The squad consistently represented BSAK with dedication and great sportsmanship. Throughout the season, the squad achieved over 33 podium positions, including a remarkable 11 podiums at the first-ever ADEK Cup Schools Championships.
U19A BOYS FOOTBALL
The undefeated U19 Boys football team won everything this year. They won 5 out of 5 games in the ADISSA league, scoring 16 goals in the process. They also beat a very strong DESC team 5-0, as well as winning the ADISSA end of season tournament. A very successful season culminated in winning the BSAK 7s, a brilliant achievement against the strongest school teams in the UAE.
U13 BOYS RUGBY TEAM
The Under 13s boys Rugby team has had a sensational season, showing a great mixture of brawn and balance. An eye-opening start, put the 'cat amongst the pigeons' at our own BSAK 7s, where they finished 2nd to a talented Dubai College side. The players took their revenge with a dominant win at the Dubai College 10s, showing a real flair and ability to thrive under pressure. The previous U13 squad that won this event, went on to win the Dubai 7s U19s in 2018. On more local fronts, the A-side won ADISSA and the B-side came runnerups This shows the quality amongst the whole squad A massive congratulations on your season and a great starting place to build upon
NOMINATIONS SPORTS PERSONALITY
LAWERENCE
Lawrence led the undefeated U19 football team with immense success this year. His determination to win was evident, ensuring the team were prepared and in the correct mind frame to compete. On the pitch a leader at the back, confident with the ball at his feet and never shy of putting in a tackle, Lawrence excelled and was a mainstay in a very successful BSAK U19 team that won it all, conceding very few goals in the process! Lawrence was also an integral part of the BSME squad that competed in Kuwait.
ROBBIE
Robbie has had a brilliant year of sport at BSAK. He has been selected to represent the UAE U18’s Rugby Sevens squad on the back of a great season for the school team, of which he captained He was also an integral part of a very successful U19 football team, winning everything they entered. His quality was evident throughout the season, with many teams taking to ‘ man marking’ him to attempt to limit his impact on the game. He was also an integral part of the BSME Games squad that travelled to Kuwait A talented sportsman, a key player of every team he is a part of!
JACK
Jack represents the values BSAK hopes to develop in all its student athletes, and is a role model for BSAK sports. He has worked tirelessly throughout his time showing perseverance, a calm persona and a desire to get better, year-on-year. He has represented the rugby programme with a quiet leadership style that has inspired his teammates and the competition to step up. This was highlighted in a Quarter Finals win at Dubai 7s Vs. JESS. This is one of the best individual and collective performances I have seen at BSAK. It shows the character of the man to excel when things are most difficult He has played a variety of sports and represented the Quins senior squad this season.
