Dear Parents This booklet sets out to outline the Essential Online Curriculum that your child will be following for the next twelve weeks. As a staff body we have created what we believe to be the key areas or skills of the curriculum that still need to be covered for your child to gain a sense of completion and to ensure that the building blocks for the following year are in place. Following the initial two weeks of distance learning, we have looked at feedback from students, parents and staff and have developed a range of approaches to vary how your child learns on a daily basis. What we are committed to is that no child should be working on their chrome book for six hours a day, they need time and activities away from them. What this plan does not give is the detail of what is taught, this just like in class will be delivered by the teacher and each teacher has the autonomy to teach this in the way that is best for the class they have. You will observe that this plan also includes advice on how we intend to support your child away from academic studies as we feel that this is crucial for the development of each and every child. It also contains advice as to how you can support your child’s well being at home and ensure that they get into a daily routine. I would like to thank all of our parents for the tremendous support we have received as we have embarked upon this new venture together. I am acutely conscious that many of you are working in challenging situations as many of you have more than one child and many of you are trying to work from home yourself. On behalf of the BSAK staff I would like to express my immense gratitude for all that you are doing. I would also like to express my sincere gratitude and thanks to our teaching staff who have been asked to teach in a way they have never experienced. This has been a very steep learning curve for us all to ensure that we provide nothing but the best support for our students. Like many of you, they are parents themselves having to juggle two jobs. My ďŹ nal thanks must go to our students who have certainly shown a huge amount of resilience throughout this time. I know that many of them are really missing the human interaction of coming into school and we miss seeing them on a daily basis. The vast majority of students have really embraced this distance learning and the teachers have praised their efforts. They have shown true BSAK endeavour and resilience and they are a credit to you as parents. Teresa Woulfe Head of Secondary

WHAT IS AN ESSENTIAL ONLINE CURRICULUM? Our Term 3 curriculum was, as it always is, carefully planned by staff to deliver the highest quality education in the classroom and under normal circumstances. Following the UAE Government’s decision to keep schools closed until the end of the academic year we took the decision at BSAK to reevaluate our curriculum for Term 3 in light of the challenges this presents as well as drawing upon the experiences and lessons learnt from the first weeks of distance learning. The Essential Online Curriculum is our strategic response as a school to ensure that we provide the very best education and learning during this period when students are learning from home. We have therefore focused on the most important, ‘essential’ learning in each subject during this time so that students and parents can focus their efforts and attention on what matters most and what will have the greatest impact, both now and also upon future learning and progression. Our aims in developing our Essential Online Curriculum are: ● ●

● ●

To adapt the curriculum to be delivered online in the most effective way possible. To provide an educational experience and online learning experience that, as closely as is possible, aligns to the normal school based experience. In doing this we hope to reduce as far as possible the impact of this period on our students’ long-term learning. Ensure the needs of all students, working remotely are taken into account in the planning and provision of the curriculum and learning at this time. To provide a clear overview of learning in each subject for students and parents across the 12 weeks of distance learning from the 12th April through to the end of the academic year.

This booklet provides an outline of the essential learning in each subject and details the topics and key learning objectives in each subject. We have also provided information on the key assessments that will be completed in each subject during the rest of this term. Although assessing students’ learning is more challenging during distance learning it is important that we provide some key assessment opportunities. Again these have been redesigned by our teachers for this period. Providing assessment opportunities is important for a number of key reasons. Firstly, for students it is important that they have a clear direction, purpose and outcome to their learning during this time. Secondly, this information is vital for teachers. It allows us both to evaluate learning during this time but it will also provide valuable information that will allow us to plan our 2020-2021 curriculum. This will be important as we plan ahead to next year and take account of the impact of this period in the curriculum plans we put in place next academic year.

PASTORAL SUPPORT DURING DISTANCE LEARNING During this period of distance learning, we still firmly believe in the importance of pastoral support for our students. It is vital that, throughout this period, we maintain dialogue between parents, students, form tutors and teachers. This communication will allow us to help support our students with their learning and ensure that this period is as successful as possible. To this end we have arranged a number of opportunities for this to happen effectively: ●

Each Sunday there will be a Form Group Zoom meeting to allow regular contact; This is an opportunity for Heads of Year to pass on information via the Form Tutors and for tutess to ask questions and maintain that face to face relationship. This will act as a well-being check. This will also be an opportunity to collect face to face feedback from students.

Form Tutors will also be in contact by email at the end of the week.

Heads of Year will send out a message to their year group on a weekly basis.

Assistant Heads will send out a message to their key stages fortnightly.

Please note that lines of communication are always open, either by email or through a specific Google Classroom. We encourage all of our students to make contact with their class teachers or Form Tutors if they have concerns during this time. In this way, we can help ensure the wellbeing of our students and make this period the success we know it can be. Year 8 Firstly, I would like to thank the Year 8 students for their positive response to our ‘new normal’. In true BSAK spirit, students have risen to the challenges of self isolation with resilience and positivity. Thank you also to our parents for your support throughout. During this time of distance learning it will give Year 8 students some time to reflect on the choices they will be asked to make in the next academic year. During Year 9, students will make their subject choices for GCSE Exams. This knowledge should also offer some motivation to keep engaging fully with our distance learning curriculum. I look forward to seeing the Year 8 students during their form time zoom sessions and will be reminding everyone that myself and the form tutors will continue to be available to offer pastoral support throughout this period of remote learning. I am also available by email if any parents require support or advice. Mike Edgar Head of Year 8 | medgar@britishschool.sch.ae

STRUCTURE YOUR LEARNING Distance Learning is hard - there is no doubt about that. For a student, it requires grit and determination - or two of our school values: Endeavour and Resilience. The same could be said for parents as they help their child(ren) navigate through these challenging times! After this initial three week period of distance learning, no doubt you are all in a better place in terms of how each student structures their learning day. As teaching staff, we have also reflected on the amount of work we are providing, and we will hopefully be able to ensure that, moving forward, the amount of work provided is of a manageable amount for our students. The following are tips for how to structure each day, and also how the rest of the year will work: THE LEARNING DAY ● Keep a structure for the learning day - our advice is to follow the school timetable - although flexibility depending on the household/individual is prudent. But it is not a good idea to work late into the evening - have a definitive stopping point for the day’s work. And there is no necessity to work beyond the 55 minutes of any lesson - students should communicate to their teacher that they have completed as much as they could within that time. ● Having a definitive stopping time for learning work also helps with down time and with family time- we need to look after each other during these times. When a student has reached the end of their learning day, pack it all away - there is a sense of pleasure that comes with packing it away - while having ‘work’ in view all evening is not good for their mood! ● In the morning, the best advice is to prepare for the learning day as they would do a school day - have a shower and have breakfast before starting any work. ● Make sure that students have many short breaks - between each subject’s work, have a short break, and make sure to have a good lunch break. Keep hydrated during the day. And move away from your learning space during these breaks. ● Make sure the working location is supporting good learning - a place with good natural sunlight; a desk large enough to support the work easily; a comfortable chair. ● During learning time ensure that distractions are out of sight and reach or turned off - e.g. mobile phones, TVs, games consoles. ● Look after emotional wellbeing by having rewards each day to look forward to. Individual families should discuss these! ● Remember that Distance Learning is more independent - students need to try hard to work out the learning; however, they should not be worried about talking to teachers and explaining any issues/concerns.

STRUCTURE YOUR LEARNING THE LESSONS ● All lessons will continue to be posted on Google Classroom. ● There will often be extension tasks set by staff. The British School Al Khubairat is proud of its non selective student body, but this creates challenges during this time of distance learning in particular, how do we stretch and challenge our more able (of which, BSAK have many). The extension tasks are there to do just this - students who are aspiring to the highest grades can look at these, if they are able to manage the time. ● Subject teachers will provide video or audio starting points to most lessons. This is to maintain an element of contact with the students beyond the written word, and will enable clear instructions for the lesson and some direct modelling. ● A small amount of lessons may be on Video Conferencing. This will be communicated via subject teachers if it is to happen. These will take place during the actual timetabled lesson time. There are well discussed positives and negatives of using live lessons - and BSAK has taken the pragmatic approach of having a small amount, chosen at key points in the learning by teaching staff. When students are partaking in live lessons, they must ensure that they are following the Video Conferencing Agreement, which can be found here. ● During May and June, there is also an expectation that students in Years 7 - 10 will be preparing for their end of year exams. During this time information will be sent home about how to best plan their revision and tips for revision. A slight reduction in workload can be expected during this time to reflect this.

MENTAL HEALTH WELLBEING MRS PRIYA MITCHELL "Situations change from time to time. A friend may become an enemy and an enemy a friend. Life is inconsistent and ever changing. So are health and weather. We must, therefore, be prepared for the unexpected changes coming our way." Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan

This inspirational quote resonates as we all navigate through the current challenges in our day to day lives. Our ‘normal’ has significantly changed and we are all adapting to new rules and ways to manage our days. There are two ways of experiencing these changes, dependent on our mindset and perspective. We can either focus on the challenges and how hard these are, resulting in negative emotions all round or we can reflect on what the lockdown and remote learning is enabling us to do. Later wake up times, spending more time with members of our household, becoming creative and finding new and interesting ways to support our children and their remote learning. This is new territory for everyone and a great way to upskill ourselves. However, recognising that many of us are experiencing frustration, feeling overwhelmed and anxious cannot be ignored. Anxiety is often the result of feeling out of control so it is hardly surprising that children and adults are both facing an increase. The Counselling Service has posted some helpful resources on the Parent Portal and this will continue. Please share these with your son or daughter. Upcoming additions to the support currently offered are Zoom parent coffee mornings, signposting to websites and new information as it is released as well as uplifting quotes and stories so please do keep checking the portal. END OF YEAR EXAMS End of year exams cover the work that the students have completed throughout the year. It is an opportunity for our students to have practice in preparing for the higher stakes examinations they will sit in years 11 and 13. Students become better at preparing for exams each time they do this process. For this reason, we are keeping our end of year exam schedule in place. The exams will take place online during the weeks beginning 14th and 21st June. During these weeks, there will be scheduled times for each examination, where it will go ‘live’ only for a specific amount of time. This timetable will be shared with both students and parents by the end of April. Due to the examinations taking place online, there are a number of different ways that they may be completed - this will be communicated by departments closer to the time, but each will attempt to secure the integrity of the process. Students will receive a booklet of what may appear in the exams by the end of April; this will help to steer the students’ revision programme. In the weeks prior to the examinations, we will be sending out helpful tips on how best to tackle revision. The week prior to the exams will be a revision week, where subjects only provide revision work for the students - however, this should not be the only revision the students do! These exams are important, as they will help shape our understanding of how well the students have progressed this year; however, we will be making allowances for the unprecedented nature of this year’s examinations.
