WELCOME FROM OUR HEAD OF PRIMARY We are a lively, busy, happy and hardworking school where our students are helped to develop a ‘growth mind-set’ and achieve the best they can. All students in BSAK Primary School are encouraged to achieve their best in academic, sporting and creative fields, whilst at the same time developing their social skills; manners, a respect for each other and those around them, kindness, helpfulness and a willingness to participate for the benefit of others. “Achievement and laughter are out trade marks!
Children are central to all we do and our school is a way of life for all students. We are in the business of teaching children to a high standard, turning them into confident and interested learners. It is not just our heritage and facilities that mark out our school; it is the atmosphere and happiness that runs throughout our community. MRS ELAINE RAWLINGS Head Of Primary

INTRODUCTION TO
KS2
Welcome to Key Stage 2 at BSAK. Like every other area of our school, we value relationships very highly. Respect is a value we promote through lessons, assemblies and within our expectations for behaviour day to day. Our students and staff are incredibly respectful to each other. Your child will learn with the support of committed, hard working teachers and learning assistants who prioritise getting to know each and every child. We strongly believe that warm, positive relationships are the key to happy children and successful learning. Genuine partnership with parents is something we encourage, promote and value as we recognise the crucial role this plays in your child’s education. In Key Stage 2 transition is carefully planned and we provide detailed and comprehensive transition programmes for students who move
from Year 2 to Year 3 and from Year 6 to Year 7. Equally we have student buddy systems for all new students on arrival at BSAK. Days for students are busy in Key Stage 2 as students are encouraged to make the most of the many opportunities within and beyond the classroom. Expectations in terms of self-motivation, independence and self-organisation increase as children mature both as young people and learners. Challenge within our curriculum grows year on year and we ensure learning experiences remain broad and balanced. BSAK is a special and unique community and we look forward to welcoming you to Key Stage 2.

HOUSE
SYSTEM PRIMARY HOUSES The British School Al Khubairat follows a traditional British house system. The Houses offer a variety of opportunities which encourage team spirit, a healthy sense of competition and most importantly allow for vibrant self-expression. The House system is an integral part of life at BSAK and brings out the very best in our community. There are four houses in the Primary school, whose names are derived from an animal or bird from the Middle Eastern region: Dhabi, Oryx, Cormorant and Falcon.
Every pupil is assigned to a house on entry from Year 1 which remains with them until Year 6. All staff members are also assigned to houses. The house system in Primary is led by 2 ‘Staff Heads of House’ and by ‘House Leaders’ in Year 6. At the beginning of each Academic year, one boy and one girl are chosen to represent their house as a ‘House captains’ across Year 2-5. The house captains and leaders support staff during house assemblies and other house events. The house with the most house points for the month, celebrate by being allowed to wear their house colours i.e. Falcon wear red on a designated Thursday each month. The children with the most house points for each month are awarded a special badge and certificate and celebrate in a ‘Breakfast With The Stars’ event with the staff heads of house.
05
STUDENT
LEADERSHIP At BSAK we recognise that student leadership is an integral part of student success as it instils quality life skills and shapes individuals. As students move through the school and develop maturity, more opportunities to take positions of leadership and responsibility are available to them. Some of these positions are elected by their peers, such as Class and Year Group Representatives and House Leaders, and others are given to students on a rota basis in class, such as Monitors and Prefects. Year Group Representatives form the Primary School Council, led by the Head Girl and Head Boy, and supported by members of our teaching team. Every term, two Year 6 students are awarded the prestigious position of Head Girl and Head Boy, selected by teaching staff and members of the Senior Leadership Team. By developing leadership qualities in our students, we are preparing them to thrive in the future and be the effective leaders that the world requires.

SAFEGUARDING AND
COUNSELLING
MS PRIYA MITCHELL School Counsellor Designated Individual
MRS ELAINE RAWLINGS Head of Primary
MR MARK LEPPARD MBE Headmaster
MISS TERESA WOULFE Head of Secondary
MR PETER CHURCH Bursar
The welfare and safety of children who attend the British School Al Khubairat is our paramount concern. We will promote the health, well – being and safety of the students in all we do. Our children have the right to protection, regardless of age, gender, ability, race or social background. They have a right to be safe in our school. BSAK expects all of its employees and volunteers to share this commitment. The school recognises and understands its responsibilities to work together in partnership with other agencies both here in the UAE and the UK to help children to grow up in a healthy and safe environment. Appointments are subject to satisfactory checks including the enhanced DBS check, Prohibition check and references. If you have any concerns in this regard please contact any member of our Safeguarding Team on +971 2 204 0200 safeguarding@britishschool.sch.ae
07
OUR CODE
OF CONDUCT The School code of Conduct lies at the centre of everything we do in school. The points set out in the Code of Conduct form the basis of our rewards and consequences systems. Please take time to read it through with your child. It will be discussed in detail with pupils at the beginning of term and will be constantly referred to, throughout the year. Courtesy You should behave with respect towards all members of the school. Fellow pupils, teachers, those in supporting roles, office, catering, cleaning and maintenance staff are all equally important to the school and deserve your respect . Good manners are expected at all times. BE COURTEOUS Consideration Behave towards others as you hope they would behave towards you. Whatever you do, think first how you would feel if it happened to you. BE CONSIDERATE Common Sense A few written rules are necessary to any community, but for the most part, common sense will tell you whether something is right or not. BE SENSIBLE Respect There are three underlying principles of respect that ensure that BSAK pupils benefit from their time at school and enjoy all that school has to offer: Respect for oneself: (appearance; organization; commitment) Respect for others: (pupils; teaching staff; non-teaching staff and visitors Respect for the environment: (classrooms; changing rooms and lavatories; stairwells; grounds and other places visited) All pupils are expected to respect the Code of Conduct at all times. Those showing exemplary standards of behavior and attitude will gain public recognition such as Effort and Conduct Awards, House Points, Head of Year and Head of School Awards

REWARDS CONSEQUENCES
ANTI-BULLYING Primary School Rewards
Golden Points are awarded for outstanding effort or acts of good conduct in school through our comprehensive reward system. On-going exemplary behavior is recognized with ‘Star of the Week’, ‘Star Conduct the Term’, Star Effort of the Term’, ‘Year Group Leader’, ‘Deputy Head’ and ‘Head Teacher’ awards. Each of these is assigned a House Point value which is logged against the pupil’s name. All children have an opportunity to receive certificates and awards in front of their peers which leads to shared celebration of success. Pupils are rewarded as individuals with stamps and certificates but their personal endeavor also adds to the ongoing House Point total for their school House. At set milestones, pupils earn House Point certificates for their accrued House Points: Bronze (15), Silver (30), Gold (45), Platinum (60) and Diamond (75). At the beginning of the next academic year, individual pupil House Point totals return to zero to provide them with fresh impetus for the new year and to enable new entrants to start from the same point as their peers. Primary School Consequences We promote and reinforce the Code of Conduct at every opportunity to maintain a positive and safe learning environment. Consequences are in place to uphold the expectations in the Code of Conduct and ensure the safety of all. We employ consequences appropriately to each individual situation. There is clear escalation of the consequence as the severity of the offence increases. We do not tolerate bullying of any kind (refer to Whole School Anti-Bullying Policy on the Parental Portal). If we discover that an act of bullying or intimidation has taken place, we act immediately to prevent any further occurrences of such behavior. We do everything in our power to ensure that all children attend school feeling safe and secure.

The amount, format and expectations of homework will be progressive through the school. Homework tasks will be varied and engaging for every learner.
13
CO-CURRICULAR
CLUBS
BSAK offers an extensive range of co-curricular activities for children in Year 3-6 which enrich the educational experience for all of our students. Activities are advertised via our online co-curricular management system (iSOCs) and parents sign their children up for activities before the start of each term. Further information regarding the clubs on offer and sign up are sent to parents at the beginning of the academic year. We have a wide range of academic, pastoral, instrumental, artistic and sporting clubs for the students to choose from; developing skills such as team building and confidence in a positive learning environment outside of the normal classroom setting. Some activities are ‘invite only’ or through selection by ‘trials’ – details are given to parents regarding this prior to sign up taking place. We encourage all students to participate in the co-curricular program throughout the year as it is viewed as part of the ‘BSAK experience’. Individual instrumental/singing tuition is offered by our full-time team of specialist Music teachers. Lessons are arranged on a rota basis for students, so as to avoid missing the same academic lesson each week. Associated Board instrumental and theory exams and Trinity Classical, Rock n Pop and Music Theatre exams may be taken twice per year. While many pupils are encouraged to take exams, it is understood that for others this may not be the best course of study. Ultimately, our aim is to deliver tuition which is tailored to the individual's needs. The department also offers Music Theory and Aural classes as well as a plethora of co-curricular ensembles. Information about the lessons and fees can be organised by contacting the Music Administrator. Instrumental@britishschool.sch.ae.

ATTENDANCE AND
PUNCTUALITY Regular attendance and punctuality are a prerequisite for student progress and a vital preparation for adult life. It is essential that students form good habits with regard to attendance and punctuality early in life. In the interests of student welfare, attendance and punctuality records are logged electronically and monitored regularly. Future schools, universities and employers will refer to these records when considering applications. The First Day Back On the first day back in School pupils will need to meet their class teachers on the shaded pitch at 7.25am. They will then be escorted to class. We encourage independence in your children in the Primary School so please wave them off at that point - you do not need to be with them in the year group area or classroom. This routine will only be in place for the first day back at school to show the pupils where they need to line up. After that, the pupils will be expected to make their own way independently to class in the mornings. Registration each day is between 7.25am and 7.35am and it is essential that your child is in class for this period. No child should be left unsupervised on the school premises before 7.15am. Late Arrival If your child arrives in school after 7.35am, please report to Reception with your child. The class register will then be updated. Your child may then move to lessons. First Day of Absence If your child is unwell, going to be late or cannot make it into school for any other reason, please contact Reception before 8.30am. The number for Reception is: 02 446 2280 Option 1 – (Nursery to Year 6 – Primary Receptionist) or Option 3 – Absent (answer machine to leave a message). Alternatively you may send an email to primaryabsent@britishschool.sch.ae detailing your child’s name, class and reason for absence/lateness. It is only necessary to call on the first day of absence.
15
If we do not hear from you, we will try to call you. However, if there are many absentees, this can be a long process and may delay our Receptionist from discovering if there is an emergency issue. After a period of absence, please ensure that your child has a note, or send an email to primaryabsent@britishschool.sch.ae formally explaining their absence. If you do not confirm a child’s absence and provide a reason, this will be noted as an unauthorized absence. Request for children to leave school early If your child has an appointment with the doctor or dentist or has to leave school during school time for any other reason, please notify your child’s class teacher accordingly. Please notify the Primary Receptionist if you collect your child early for any reason so that a note detailing that he/she is no longer on the premises may be added to the class register for safety reasons. Late Collection The official end of the day is 2.35pm (1.35pm on Thursday). Shortly after this time, any child who has not been collected will be taken to the Primary Reception area to enable the teacher to start the next part of his/her working day; leading after school clubs, marking, attending meetings, planning and preparing resources. The Receptionist will log the child’s name in the ‘Late Collection’ log and will endeavor to contact parents to confirm collection arrangements. Please ensure that children are collected on time at 2.35pm (1.35pm on Thursday) as late collection has a negative impact on the smooth running of the school and in particular, the co-curricular activities programme. The same procedure will be followed for late pick up after co-curricular clubs. Regular attendance and punctuality are prerequisites for pupil progress and vital preparation for adult life. Please promote positive attitudes towards learning in your child through supporting your child’s regular attendance. Levels of attendance and late arrivals and collection are logged and monitored in the interests of pupil welfare and may trigger a letter of concern to parents. Request for Leave of Absence Whilst we understand that, in certain exceptional circumstances, students may have to be withdrawn from school and miss curriculum time, we would advocate that this disruption is minimised wherever possible. If you intend to withdraw your child, you are requested to email the school primaryabsent@britishschool.sch.ae with reasons clearly stated, in advance, so that the details can be added to your child’s attendance record. We would strongly advise parents to avoid holidays during term time. Absences for holidays will be recorded as ‘unauthorised’.

HEALTHCARE
AND NURSING The Clinic opening times are as follows: Sunday – Wednesday 7.30am – 2.30pm (nurse available until 5pm for anything urgent during after school clubs and sports) Thursday 7.30am – 1.30pm (nurse available until 3pm for anything urgent during after school clubs sports) School Telephone Number – 02 204 0200 Email – nurses@britishschool.sch.ae
The school clinic at BSAK is staffed by a team of HAAD registered school nurses and professional administrators. The nurses main role is to provide first aid and/or emergency care to all students and to ensure the safety of children at all times. When To Keep Your Child At Home BSAK has a policy for when children are unwell. Please see the School website for certain illness’s that require you to keep your children at home. BSAK Healthcare Contact Details For Parents When children become unwell in school and parents need to be contacted, it is important to ensure that parental contact details on our system are correct, as these are used when we call you in an emergency. Your contact details can be updated via the Parental Portal. Collecting Your Child From The School Clinic If you receive a call about your child who needs to either go home or be seen by a Doctor, we request that you collect your child as promptly as possible. We suggest that within 1 hour is an acceptable time frame, however, we appreciate that this may not always be possible. If parents are unable to collect their child, they should notify the Nurse of the details of another person who is able to collect them. Children must sign out at Reception with their parent in order to receive an exit pass to leave the school premises. Healthy Eating and Food Policy BSAK promotes Healthy Eating and we are a Nut free school. Please see the School website for our Nut and Prohibited Food Policy. Medical Information for School Trips At the start of each year each child is issued with a Medical Sports and Trip form for that academic year. It is an ADEK requirement that we receive a form for every student.

TRANSPORTATION BSAK runs an excellent School Bus service which is provided by our new partner, Shanawaz Transport Services. Shanawaz operate a large Fleet of buses, all 32 Seat in size. The buses are equipped with point seat belts, internal and external CCTV and have GPS location systems. Parents have access to an App where they can view the time their child boarded and disembarked the School Bus and can see, in real time, the exact location of the School Bus their child is travelling on. The bus company is regularly inspected, is compliant with at DoT and ADEK Regulations and drivers and supervisors are professionally trained and certified. There is only one drop off in the morning for the start of School and one afternoon pick up once School has finished. Many pick-up and drop-off locations, both inside and outside Abu Dhabi city limits are offered. In order to support a consistently good service at an affordable price, ADEK have introduced a cap on school bus fees, reducing them, with immediate effect to AED 5,000 per annum. All payments for the School Bus should be made directly to the BSAK accounts department. For details of available pick up and drop off locations, please contact Shanawaz Transport at bsakbus@shanawazgroup.com. LEARNING SUPPORT The school values the abilities and achievements of all children and strives to meet the learning needs of every child. Lesson planning provides for differentiated learning tasks to make the curriculum accessible to all children, and to enable each child to make personal progress. If a teacher has concerns about any child’s personal progress, he/she will share these concerns with you. Likewise if you as a parent have concerns about your child, please speak to your child’s teacher at the earliest opportunity. Most learning needs can be met through class differentiation and by the teacher’s professional skills in managing a mixed ability class. However, if a teacher has more specific concerns about aspects of a child’s learning they may seek support from our Learning Support Department. The learning support team work with children within the classroom setting and through short periods of individual or group work away from the class. If the school feels your child will benefit from such support you will be fully involved in the process and begin to have regular review meetings with the learning support teacher. Partnership with parents plays a key role in enabling children with learning difficulties to achieve their potential. We recognise that parents hold key information and have knowledge and experience to contribute to the shared view of a child’s needs and the best ways of supporting them. The school will have regard to the UK Code of Practice when carrying out its responsibilities toward all children needing learning support.
LIBRARY BSAK Primary Library boasts over 30,000 titles by world renowned children’s authors. Spread out over two floors, the library is a treasure trove for curious young minds and contains a host of fiction and non-fiction books on topics ranging from dinosaurs to fairy tales. Our dedicated Librarians arm young learners with the tools they need to become responsible and capable library citizens through our fun and interactive library skills programme which begins at FS1. At BSAK we understand the importance of parent and guardian involvement in children’s development, therefore parents are encouraged to visit and borrow from the library daily. On any given morning and afternoon, parents, grandparents and guardians can be seen reading to children in our library. We believe that promoting this sense of BSAK community spirit is what helps to foster a love of life-long learning in our young library users.

YEAR 5 Welcome to Year 5’s fun, frolics and fascination. Keeping your children’s eyes shining with excitement about learning, fascinated by the world around them and curious to find out more is why we come to work every day and what makes teaching the very best job in the world. As your children move into the Upper KS2, we are looking for them to take on additional responsibilities and we encourage them to become more independent. To help achieve these goals, a positive and motivated attitude to learning and a growth mindset are key. Our holistic approach to both our children and curriculum ensures all needs will be catered for, with particular focus on developing reading skills through the use of our Accelerated Reading Scheme, the explicit teaching of vocabulary and regular use of technology to enhance and augment children’s learning opportunities. We know that by working closely together as a team; children, parents and teachers, collaborating and communicating effectively will help ensure your child has the most positive learning experience possible; feeling loved, safe, cared for, appreciated, listened to and therefore confident! We can’t wait to meet you all in September. YEAR 6 It is with great pleasure that the Year 6 Team welcome you to the new academic year. Year 6 is an important year in your child’s learning journey and we will do our utmost to make their last year in Primary Education a successful one. Belonging to one community, Year 6 children will show respect for each other and themselves; tolerant of differences and proud of their diversity; honest and positive about their learning and behaviour every day. As educators, our aim in Year 6 is to develop learners who support each other and are confident, responsible, innovative and engaged. The curriculum framework based on the National Curriculum of England and Wales, but adapted for our location in the UAE, is designed to involve learners in an active and creative learning journey that will provide a solid foundation on which the later stages of education can be built, thus preparing them for success in their Secondary School and beyond. We will endeavour to ensure children are ready for life beyond the Primary classroom by nurturing independence, a growth mind-set and a sense of self-worth. Within this safe environment, children will be encouraged to take risks, self-reflect and readily seek advice from those around them. Happy children will thrive with the support of teachers, family and friends and will be fully prepared for all that life has to offer in their bright futures. We look forward to working with you to achieve these goals.
