Drug And Alcohol Charity Praises Bravery Of Greene King

Page 3

ITFC Charitable Trust update The Trust will once again be running their popular holiday football courses throughout the county this Easter holiday.

The Bury St Edmunds based drug and alcohol rehabilitation charity, Focus12, has spoken of their delight at being named as the sole beneficiaries of the annual Greene King charity ball to be held at the start of this year's Bury Festival next month. The charity is currently facing well publicised funding difficulties, and the proceeds of the evening will go towards plugging the £130,000 gap left by the withdrawal of funding from the Suffolk Drug and Alcohol Action Team (DAAT) in March this year.

Beat those holiday boredom blues and spend the day with ITFC making new friends and keeping fit and active. Courses are open to both boys and girls, of all abilities aged between 4 and 12.

Chip Somers, Chief Executive of Focus12 said: "Greene King have been hugely supportive of us over the years, indeed Steve Magnall, deputy MD of their brewing business, is the Chairman of our board of Trustees. This endorsement of Focus12 and the important work we do, by one of Britain's best known and most loved breweries, is a very brave step and a real indication of Greene King's genuine and enthusiastic commitment to their social responsibility. Last year's ball was a great success and we are hoping this year's event will be even better." There are still a few tables left for the event which will take place in a marquee in the grounds of Greene King on Thursday May 19th, and will include a drinks and canapé reception, a four course meal, charity auction and live entertainment. Tickets are available from the Greene King Visitor Centre on 01284 714297 and cost £46 each or £415 for a table of ten.

Those attending one of the Trust's 2 day courses can expect to take part in fun football skills training as well as mini football games. All participants will receive a medal for taking part and members of the winning teams will receive trophies. ITFC holiday Goalkeeper training camps offer a unique opportunity for children to focus on key goalkeeping skills such as quick feet, ball distribution and angles so that budding Marton Fulops can get a good grasp on how to play in this key position. The Trust also offer Girl's only courses, Crazee's Club a course specifically designed for 4 - 6 year olds and a children's Ability Counts courses, a 1 day specialist course that provides a unique training experience for children who have learning difficulties, physical disabilities and mental health issues. Courses are delivered at various venues across Suffolk including Elmswell, Felixstowe, Framlingham, Ipswich, Bury St Edmunds, Saxmundham, Thetford, Woodbridge and Mildenhall. Courses start from as little as £8 so be sure to book early to avoid disappointment. To make a booking or for any enquires for any of our activities please call 0845 1369333 or for more information visit the Trust's website at www.itfccharitabletrust.org.uk or email communityweb@itfc.co.uk. Last month I said that I had raised several concerns about the consultation process with the council. Although the council agrees that the feedback questionnaire contained unanswerable questions that were not agreed by the council they will wait until the consultation has finished before deciding if more is needed. I will let you know. The workshops, run by developers, were more positive but it's now a question of will the council listen to suggestions from the community?

Symonds Road HGVs Cllr Trevor Beckwith

The problem of heavy goods vehicles using Symonds Road still isn't resolved but is being looked at on a couple of fronts. It seems that it's not possible for the authorities to enforce the restriction as the drivers just claim they are delivering to Lawson Place so are exempt. I have a solution to this loophole and have put it to the council. Again, I will keep you updated as I'm sure those affected are as annoyed as I am at how long it takes to get anything sorted out.

Local elections Elections for the borough council and the town council take place on 5 May. Many don't bother to vote but in the next few years there's great deal going on that will almost certainly affect you or your family so perhaps it is worthwhile voting this time. I've seen an article from a political party councillor reminding us that these elections deal with local and not national issues. I wholeheartedly agree but probably for a different reason. Let us indeed concentrate on local decisions. Decisions to abolish middle schools, to scrap school crossing patrols, to change the terms of the youngster's eXplore cards, to overspend £9 million on the Apex, to break the promise of the cattle market link, to annually hike parking charges, to introduce Sunday charges, to refuse to address the parking problems at Skyliner Way, to spend £21 million on a new council building, to put up with the woeful pace of adoption of new development and the really big one; to completely disregard the views of existing communities who they brush aside to allow massive development where their council wants it. Yes, I'm all for concentrating on local issues and look forward to seeing what the electorate make of it all. The Secretary of State for Communities, Eric Pickles, agrees that local people should be heard so it's a real shame that many local politicians are so confident of getting re-elected they can ignore public opinion. Nice and easy for those individuals but not so good for democracy. Trevor Beckwith Independent Councillor - Moreton Hall

Thinking Of Getting A Classic Car?

MS Society South Suffolk Branch

Classic car enthusiasts paid a visit to a car restoration company as part of an evening class run by West Suffolk College.

Are you or someone close to you affected by MS? The MS Society South Suffolk Branch can provide support, assistance and information about Multiple Sclerosis. We also offer a range of meetings and events on a monthly based around our area, which includes Felixstowe, Woodbridge, Ipswich, Stowmarket & Hadleigh.

The Appreciation and Care of your Classic Car course was studying the Austin Seven in detail this term. Nick Gray, proprietor of Bennicks Motors in Bradfield St George was kind enough to let the group examine his 1935 Austin Seven saloon, one of three on the premises that evening.

The branch can be contacted on our helpline 08455 339417 or via email ms.southsuffolk@gmail.com.

The car was on a ramp, so that students could get a good look at the undercarriage.

For more information please get in touch find us on the internet. www.mssociety.org.uk/southsuffolk or www.facebook.com/ms.southsuffolk

Tutor Patrick Hemphill said:

"We were also able to scrutinise a couple of Jaguars, a Rolls Royce and an American Hudson among others. It was also interesting to visit a working garage with real restoration projects under way and to talk to the staff about their working methods." The classic car course at West Suffolk College is designed to appeal to classic and vintage car owners and enthusiasts alike. It combines sessions in the College's own workshops with occasional outside visits. Students are welcome to bring their own old cars along to be looked at, using the College's excellent workshop facilities. Patrick can provide servicing and restoration tips and advice on what to look for when buying a classic car.

the Bury St Edmunds Group Local writers are holding a special meeting on Tuesday 26th April to celebrate three successful years of Poetry Aloud, the Bury St Edmunds group that provides aspiring poets with a sympathetic platform from which to read their work. Actress and performance poet Katie Bonna will entertain the audience in The Attic, at Benson Blakes bar in St John's Street, Bury St Edmunds. She will provide the finale to a 'Pick of the Poets' evening that will start with members of the group reading each other's work rather than their own as they normally do.

Accountants

Poetry Aloud was founded as a poetry café at the beginning of 2008 by Joe Thraveson-Lambert, and met in The Lounge, in Hatter Street in its first year. "Having the opportunity to try work out on an audience is very helpful," says Jen Overett, "and the website gives you the chance to look at what others have read at the meetings. The comments there can be encouraging too." The website - poetryaloud.org.uk - is managed by Colin Whyles and includes many of the poems read at the monthly meetings, over half of them with recordings, so that they can be heard as well as read. There are over 500 poems on the website, and nearly 50 people have read at Poetry Aloud meetings, though a typical evening would involve fifteen or so readers and listeners. Poetry Aloud meets on the last Tuesday of every month except December. There are other well established Suffolk poetry cafés in Sudbury, Woodbridge and Halesworth, and one has recently started in Ipswich.

Poetry Aloud The next 10 week course starts on Tuesday 26 April from 6.30pm to 8.30pm. To find out more or book a place, call 01284 716333, or call in to the Information Centre at West Suffolk College.

The meeting, which is open to anyone interested, starts at 7.30pm and the admission price is just £2.00.

Katie Bonna has appeared in plays at the Theatre Royal in Bury St Edmunds, and performed some of her poems at Waterstones last year. Further details are available from 01284 701947.

But, it proved to be intriguing, as the abbey wall (called the curtain wall) has some very interesting features… These start with a chimney, if you poke your head up, there's still a hole where the sky comes in! Further on in Mustow Street, set in the wall approximately three metres up, there sits a little doll. I'm not quite sure what she is made from, ceramic maybe? When cleaning the wall in 1984, workmen discovered her. She dates from around 1777 and has a little baby faceand is dressed in 18th century fashion, with bonnet and petticoat. Is it a little prayer book in her arms? Further up the wall from the doll is a circle of what looks like shells. It makes you wonder if, at some point, the level of the street was different and were there dwellings backed onto the wall as there are further up the street?

It was presented to the borough by Lady Bunbury and has different water levels for different sized animals from horses to dogs.

The Mayor took a left into the abbey gardens, so we carried on towards the One Bull, passing a stone with 1777 on it and a property restored by the Bury St Edmunds Town Trust in 1981.

The Fox is said to date from the 16th century and mercifully survived the great fire of 1608. On the old drover's route into Bury, it used to stand next to the Eastgate, but this was pulled down in the 1760's.

During the restoration, horse bones were found under the floorboards dating back to the 1340's. This was where the abbey stables were and the One Bull was the abbey brewhouse.

Apparently, one of the favourite pastimes of the locals was to jeer at the poor wretched folks, being dunked into the river Lark on the ducking stool.

This pub has had several 'make-overs' down the centuries and under the courtyard, runs a long tunnel vault.

In Victorian times, as was the fashion, the Fox was given an external pseudo-Jacobean make-over. Thank goodness, the shiny black beams have been removed, however during the restoration of 1922,real Jacobean panelling was uncovered under layers of paint!

One of the oldest pubs in the town, its core is 16th century and it's a grade 11 listed . There's a story about a bull that would be tethered at the Haberdon for a fertility rite- but that is another story…

The pub was doing a roaring trade so, we crossed the road and went for Susan Buonaparte. a wander up the street, getting stuck behind the Mayor and Mayoress, so it became a meander as it seemed rude to overtake!

Mr Ruffley said: "I am pleased that the Secretary of State has written to me and is recognising that there is a problem with local roads. I am particularly concerned with the pothole damage on the A14 stretch between Bury St Edmunds and Needham Market. In Philip Hammond's letter he advises me that £200 million of additional funding will be allocated to Local Authorities for the 'abnormal damage' caused this winter. I am also glad to see that Suffolk is going to receive a sizeable portion of this local road allocation - £4,441,187, which is fantastic when compared with our neighbours in Cambridgeshire who will receive £2,681,869. I am hoping that these additional funds will be used wisely and that the pothole problem which has affected the whole of Suffolk can be fixed.

The A14 is a vital highway between the Midlands and the Continent and it bisects directly through my constituency. Therefore I will be keeping a close eye on the progress of these repairs."
