BEK plastics Ltd BEK Plastics Limited was set up by my husband, Harry and myself on 31st October 1996. This means that we have been trading for just over 13 years, unlucky for some but I consider it lucky as we are still trading and have had our most successful year (2009) despite adverse trading conditions. Since Harry's retirement last year, the Company has been run by Mandy and myself. Like most installation companies, we rely on our excellent fitters to keep up the standards that we have set. When BEK was first established, we supplied and installed roofline products only. Satisfied customers started asking us to install windows for them and so now we install all PVC-U products from fascia to windows, doors, conservatories and decking. The decking that we install is of such a high quality that we are the approved installers for Center Parcs. Since moving buildings six years ago, we now have a successful supply-only trade counter for all the products we sell. Customers come to us and are surprised that Mandy and I have such a good knowledge of products and how to install them. We sometimes offer to go and do the work for them. All the local Builders Merchants and DIY stores tell people to go and see Edna as she knows what she is talking about. We also install fascia for six different window companies and more builders are now using us to supply and install our products. All our window installations are covered by FENSA (membership no.20718), our fascia installations are PERC (purveyors of excellence in roofline and cladding) registered and everything carries a 10 year insurancebacked guarantee. Customers know that we do not do pressure sales and everything is carried out in a relaxed, happy and helpful atmosphere. Customers always leave with a smile on their face and most of the time a hot chocolate or coffee in their hand! Regards Edna

'Good foundation' for future market prosperity Market traders and councillors in Bury St Edmunds have welcomed the results of a review which looked at ways to secure the future vitality of the town's Wednesday and Saturday markets. Presenting the report first to stakeholders and then to the Bury St Edmunds Area Working Party, Nick Rhodes - representing the National Association of British Market Authorities (NABMA) who carried out the review - said: "This is a thriving and very popular market with a lot of good professional people running it, very professional traders and good quality products." NABMA, which has extensive experience of markets throughout the country, carried out wide-ranging consultations and visited the borough's markets in Bury and Haverhill. The review makes various recommendations, such as better publicity and communications, a customer charter, support for new businesses starting up on the market, a review of waste management to reduce costs and increase recycling. The review also said that the council was capable of making any necessary changes so seeking an external partner, or privatising, the market was not necessary. Cllr Sara Mildmay-White, Cabinet member responsible for the borough's markets, said: "This was an excellent review which gives us a good foundation on which to work, in partnership with the traders, to make sure the market is fit for the future. Bury's market is an important part of the town which adds greatly to its overall prosperity. We need to ensure it thrives not just now but for many years to come so our children and generations beyond them can continue to enjoy its attractions and benefits. I am looking forward to working with traders to secure the market's future."

Statement On Behalf Of David Ruffley MP David Ruffley MP would like to thank everyone who has sent messages of support and good wishes following the incident at Victoria Station on 17 June. He has much appreciated the huge number of very kind letters he has received. David is making excellent progress and is set to make a full recovery from the depression he was suffering. He is very much looking forward to resuming his full constituency and parliamentary duties in the autumn. Indeed, he believes he will return fitter and stronger than ever. David has also been very encouraged by the wholehearted support he has David Ruffley MP received from the Conservative Party. The Prime Minister has spoken to David to offer his total support and the Parliamentary Party has rallied round to help with the smooth running of his House of Commons office in his temporary absence. If David's constituents need help, they should continue to address letters to him at the House of Commons, London, SW1A 0AA or email: info@telldavidruffley.com and his office will respond to them on David's behalf.

Three cheers for parks St Edmundsbury has been awarded three green flags for its parks - the largest number in the county. The triple success comes as the world famous Abbey Gardens wins accreditation and East Town Park in Haverhill and Nowton Park in Bury St Edmunds successful retain the awards granted in previous years. Together the three parks welcome over 850,000 visitors a year and across the borough, there are more than three million visits to the green spaces managed by St Edmundsbury Borough Council. Cllr Lynsey Alexander, St Edmundsbury Borough Council Cabinet member for Culture and Sport said, "We treasure our parks and I am delighted they have been confirmed as being of such a high standard. As they are free, they are particularly valuable in these difficult economic times, and I recommend anyone who has yet to discover the parks, to pay a visit, and be delighted with what they find." The Green Flag Award is the national standard that recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces in England, Wales and Scotland Only green spaces that are free to enter and open to the public are eligible. The award is a sign to visitors that a park has met strict criteria, which among other things require it to be a clean, safe and welcoming place to spend time.

Hanging baskets

By Ken Crowther Summer at last, so lawns and patios need to look at their best so we can enjoy al fresco lunches and long evening BBQs. The biggest job of the month is to see that all your plants are watered regularly and the soil retains as much moisture as possible, so at least we can prevent the worst damages of drought.

Sensible watering regime now Creating a sensible watering regime now, will help to prevent plant damage if the weather stays hot as predicted, and the rains refuse to fall in any great amount. The secret of success is to get the water deep underground where plant roots can easily take up the moisture. It's no good wetting the soil surface on a daily basis. That just encourages plants to create surface roots that are more susceptible to hot sun and drying winds. It also encourages annual weeds to pop up to compete for available moisture. Instead you need to get water down to below 15cm (6 inches) from the surface. You can do this most easily if you sink a plant pot, cut off lemonade bottle or similar, up to its rim beside shrubs and between bedding plants, so that water from your can or hose is placed instantly at root level and you have a reservoir that fills and drains easily and quickly.

Hanging baskets may need watering daily, although large pots and containers usually hold enough compost so that they only need attention every few days. To maximise the amount of water that can be held by the compost, many gardeners add water-holding crystals before planting up. Mixed into standard composts this combination of ingredients allows Hanging plant roots to absorb moisture and nutrients as and when they need it, and also reduce the need for frequent watering.

Basket

Dead-heading flowers Dead-heading flowers will always encourage maximum blooming as this prevents the setting of seed and a natural tendency of plants to stop all further growth once they have achieved their life's ambition of producing seed for the next generation. Fuchsias produce many green seed pods that take up a lot of the plant's energy and these should be removed by weekly dead-heading. Most Petunias, including the Surfinia and Million Bells varieties, are sterile and so do not set seed, so this is a job that doesn't have to be carried out for maximum plant vigour.

In this way daily watering of beds and borders is totally unnecessary. It is Remember if you want more help from Ken just go to the website: much better to water thoroughly and deeply once a week instead of wetting the surface every night. Your plants will grow more strongly, and gardeningwithken.com and most important of all enjoy your you can enjoy the extra spare time relaxing in your garden. Lightly feed- garden. ing of plants regularly will give them the strength to send down stronger, deeper roots to this reservoir of moisture. A weekly feed of a good liquid feed like Miracle-Gro or Maxi Crop will do the trick. Always use liquid feeds at this time of the season as they react more quickly. Watering and feeding container plants growing on the patio is a regular job.

More investment in future business at The Apex An area on the first floor of The Apex, the new public venue due to open soon in the heart of Bury St Edmunds, could become an extra space for events and catering, a report states this week. But it will need an investment of approximately £200,000 to turn the extra space into a businesslike addition and equip the rest of building to reach its full income earning potential. The area was handed to St Edmundsbury Borough Council when arc developer Centros gave up control, says the report to next week's Bury St Edmunds Area Working Party (11 August). The new public space will operate as an extension of the other open areas on the first floor but it does mean the council needs to install a new bar and all the other fixtures and fittings needed to make it a success. Initial discussions with potential hirers also suggest that a higher standard of conference chairs and tables will be needed for the rest of the building to match the excellence of its design and construction and the expectations of customers. Having this new area means The Apex can be run flexibly and hire out a range of different spaces out to various organisations at any one time. There will be extra overheads, such as the cost of heating and lighting, but the report says the additional flexibility means the area could increase the income already anticipated in the existing business plan. Cllr Sara Mildmay-White, Cabinet member for Asset Management, said: "Every day we get closer to opening a building that is hotly anticipated as a superb quality addition to the region's arts venues. The Apex will add significantly to cultural opportunities for generations to come. Investing in this additional space will help to increase the building's flexibility, and I'm looking forward to seeing how it works to complement the other spaces in The Apex."

Since the mention of the possible parishing of Moreton Hall, there has been positive feedback from the community. Top Tips To Recycle Your Paint Ever wondered what to do with your remaining paint after you’ve finished painting your house? It is estimated that the majority of paint (83%) currently collected in the county is water-based, and much of this material could be diverted away from costly specialist hazardous waste disposal. The public are advised to reduce and reuse as much of their unwanted paint as possible as we all have a duty to minimise the amount of waste we generate, so please follow our recommendations below for paint reduction and reuse: • Follow the guidelines on paint tins before you buy so that you only buy enough paint for the job and do not have large volumes of excess remaining • Use any remaining paint on other suitable jobs • Give away any unwanted paint to friends of family or give directly to a local charity to use • If you have water based paint left over, mix with sand and leave the top off the tin to allow it to dry out. When solidified, double bag it and put it in your normal waste bin • Contact your local district or borough council to arrange for a collection (which may incur a charge)

My top 5 tips when travelling to South Africa 1) Travel with Somak Holidays as they offer many ways to see South Africa, from an organised tour, suggested itinerary or self-drive holiday. 2) Stay on a private game reserve to get the best game viewing experience - there are 'Malaria-free' areas too! 3) Don't miss seeing the unusual sight of the Penguins at Boulder Beach in Cape Town 4) Blyde River Canyon (3rd to the Grand Canyon) is one of those hidden secrets that should not be missed. 5) Don't miss the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to cuddle a purring cheetah at the Cango wildlife Ranch on the Garden Route

Bury Town Council Update Monthly topic - August 2010 - Minden Ward It's summer time and dare I say it but we seem to be doing alright with the weather so far. Bury is a very pretty town and the Abbey Gardens, roundabouts and floral displays once again are incredible. For this we owe our gratitude to the Bury in Bloom team of which I have to say I am a very proud member (I play a very small part in it, I hasten to add). On Tuesday July 20th the judges were around for Anglia in Bloom, it was a lovely day and all went well. The sheer beauty of some of the displays can't help but take your breath away. I was so pleased to see that Westley Middle School took part so well done to them. The next stage of the competition will be Britain in Bloom which is being judged on August 4th, hopefully the weather will stay kind to us and enable us to do well again this year. I visited my ward recently and had a chat with a few of the residents and apart from some anti-social behaviour problems no-one had anything much to report which brings me to my next point. I am on the panel of the Safer Neighbourhood Team; we had our meeting on July 21st at Westbury Social Club and discussed issues that had been raised by residents of Minden Ward. Suffolk County Council has managed to address the safety issues of schoolchildren at Westley by arranging to have zebra crossings at both Westley Road and West Road. That's all for now. I hope you all enjoy your summer holidays and in the mean time any problems that occur please do not hesitate to contact me. Councillor Patrick Chung (Minden Ward)

Ipswich Town Community Trust is once again kicking off their Weekly Soccer Centres for young people aged between four and 19 years. This season will see the 10 week courses take place throughout Suffolk including venues in Ipswich, Felixstowe, Kesgrave, Saxmundham, Woodbridge and Bury St. Edmunds.

South Africa - probably my most favourite country visited - is a land of great diversity and beauty with tropical coastlines, arid deserts, exhilarating game reserves and stunning mountain scenery. It also has a proud tradition, a welcoming nature and first-class infrastructure which make South Africa a perfect holiday destination.

A South Africa holiday caters for all tastes from relaxing on the beach to the wilds of a remote game reserve and from sipping cocktails in the cosmopolitan city of Cape Town to savouring the five star wine and cuisine along the Garden Route. It's all there just waiting to be discovered with some of the very best retreats available across the 7 key regions of South Africa:
