'The main purpose of this meeting is for the Council to hear the point of view of local businesses, but we have also invited some speakers we think are excellent and we hope that they will be an added incentive for businesses to come to this meeting. We have called it 'Bury St Edmunds…bucking the trend' because all the evidence we have suggests that the town was not hit as badly as many places by the recession and is now in a good position to move forward with confidence in 2011. We obviously want to do all we can to ensure that Bury St Edmunds grows and prospers.' Places are free, but should be booked by contacting St Edmundsbury's Economic Development Services on 01284 757683 or economic.development@stedsbc.gov.uk. Businesses can also submit any questions in advance.

A trial scheme to compost street sweepings has successfully diverted 526 tonnes of material from landfill. St Edmundsbury Borough Council runs ten road sweeping vehicles to keep road gutters and pavements in the borough clear. Between June and October a trial collected the equivalent of 51 full bin lorry loads of material. The sweepings are predominantly soil and organic compostable material but also contain a small amount of litter which is separated out and recycled. Forest Heath District Council has now joined the scheme which has been put into full operation. Cllr Peter Sevens, St Edmundsbury Borough Council Cabinet member for Environment said: "The material we are collecting has a high organic content, making it ideal for composting. The key to the scheme was in finding a supplier who could transport and process it. The borough has an enviable recycling record and I am delighted that this scheme has been a success."

was to again address our concerns and to also ask why the council just won't listen. The meeting did have a familiar feel to it; thousands of us are wrong and nanny St Edmundsbury knows best. The Chief Executive even told us we shouldn't be whingeing about traffic congestion while we continue to drive our cars. So, there you have it, on with the trainers and off you go. They say you could even get the bus. Ho-ho-ho seems As expected, on 14 December, the Tory adminisvery appropriate (and seasonal). Combining that sort of advice with a tration of St Edmundsbury Borough Council got their way and will blight the eastern side of Bury St pliant administration results in a toxic mix for those of us fighting to protect and even improve Moreton Hall. Luckily, it remains a very good Edmunds with yet more development. Just to place to live but that is despite the council and not thanks to it. All we remind everyone, it's 500 houses to the east of Moreton Hall any time after 2011 and 1250 houses can do is keep watching these people and challenge them to provide at Compiegne Way any time after 2021. The one the infrastructure they claim they can provide to make it all work. Do condition regarding infrastructure is the relief road, you ever wonder why they haven't provided it so far? I do and I ask but Cllr Trevor they won't answer; they can't answer. as they call it, leading to the Rookery junction on Beckwith the A14 which has to be built before the houses. You probably know that Eric Pickles, the Communities Secretary, is releas- Cllr Trevor Beckwith Moreton Hall, St Edmundsbury Borough Council ing many directives in an attempt to give more influence to ordinary people. In light of that, I tried to get the proposals for Moreton Hall put on hold until the all the directives had been assessed and implemented. Good for Mr Pickles and good for us you would think, so it really is perverse that the council wouldn't wait until they had a clear idea of the government's intentions. That wouldn't suit our box-tickers who just want an easy life. Over many years, I have been warning about what they were up to and it's good that the community came together in objecting and then went further by forming a residents' association. Although I suspect just about everyone on Moreton Hall will be angry at this betrayal, I urge them to be prepared to have their say when it comes to the creation of the master plan for the area. Yes, I do mean betrayal; what else can you call it when we finally reach the conclusion of 35 years continuous development only for the council, alleged custodians of our welfare, to disregard hundreds of objections and chose the soft option?
Cross Country Runners Three West Suffolk College students competed in the British Colleges Sport East Region Cross Country competition at Easton College in December, and two will go through to the national championships at Bath University in April. [Wednesday 15th December] Alex Dunbar won the men's race, beating a field of 44 regional runners and retaining his title. Alex, who is in the second year of a National Diploma Sport and Exercise Science course, has carried on where he left off last year; he is a very talented and dedicated runner who trains six times a week. He will represent his College and the region in the national championships for the second year in a row. Sophie Tupman, a first year National Diploma Sports Development and Coaching student, ran an excellent race, finishing 5th in the women's event out of 21 regional runners. Sophie has also qualified to represent the College and the region in the national championships. For Jordan Greenwood, a Synergy student, the BCS Cross Country championship was his first competitive event representing the College. Jordan competed well in a very strong field, coming 27th out of 44 runners, a respectable result for a first race. All three competitors were a credit to the College throughout the competition.
A week before the council meeting, the Moreton Hall Resident's Association held a public meeting with senior council employees in attendance. It's a great shame that none of the cabinet councillors were available but no doubt they are in great demand. The meeting

The Clock Workshop
January 2011
The important clock collection held by Moyse's Hall Museum, Bury St Edmunds, continues its horology lecture series at 2pm on Sunday 23 January with a talk by Ian Coote, member of the British Horology Institute.
January's meeting started off with our usual Buck's Fizz toast to the New Year and a welcome to some more prospective members. We continued with a talk by Alison from the Flotation Centre in Bury. The benefits of "floating" to both our physical and psychological health were explained and discount vouchers were available for the many members who were interested. Just what was needed! We followed up with a brief discussion and vote on the proposed Resolutions ahead of our proper vote in May. Business covered the diary of events for the next few months including a Retail Outlet/National Trust property visit in April and the various competitions we are entering. We closed with the Treasurer's Report and an update on the recent Planning decisions affecting Moreton Hall followed by coffee and cake.
To highlight the current 'Keeping Time' exhibition which will be on display until Summer 2011, Ian will reveal the secrets of the tools of the trade required for keeping timepieces in working order. The history of timekeeping is the story of the search for ever more consistent actions or processes to regulate the rate of a clock. The exhibition includes clocks and time pieces from the renowned Gershom Parkington collection together with exhibits from St Edmundsbury's own collection, and one that fans must not miss.
Next month is a talk on Gardening and new members are welcome. We meet the first Wednesday of the month, 7.30pm in the Community Centre. Elizabeth Morgan

Abbeygate ceremonial secured
Heat-loss diagnostic discount for businesses
Photo opportunity: Thursday 6 January 2011, Abbeygate, Angel Hill, Bury St Edmunds. Work begins on construction of an inner tunnel.
West Suffolk businesses are being offered a dramatically discounted opportunity to prevent energy waste thanks to an initiative by St Edmundsbury Borough Council and West Suffolk Green Business Forum.
Work has begun to ensure that a historic monument at the centre of arrangements for a homecoming parade will be open to the public. Abbeygate, a historic building dating back to 1327, was closed for inspection on 24 December, when mortar and masonry damaged by recent cold weather began falling from the structure. It is an important gateway between the Abbey Gardens and Angel Hill used by thousands of people, and on Saturday 15 January, by 1 Squadron RAF Regiment who are due to march through it at the beginning of their homecoming parade.
The infra-red thermal imaging survey gives a detailed picture of where a building is losing heat and wasting money. The survey company, IRT Surveys (East Anglia) Limited, also uses the imaging to estimate the cost of the heat waste both financially and in CO2 emissions.
To ensure that disruption is kept to a minimum, St Edmundsbury Borough Council is having an inner tunnel of scaffolding constructed, which will allow the gate to be used while English Heritage, the organisation responsible for its maintenance and repair, undertakes any remedial work necessary.
More information is available on the council website at: www.stedmundsbury.gov.uk/sebc/live/ThermalImage.cfm
Cllr John Griffiths MBE, Leader of St Edmundsbury Borough Council said, "Bury's unique heritage adds greatly to the town's quality of life and St Edmundsbury will continue to do everything it can to both preserve and protect it. We are happy to be working with English Heritage to make sure that the Abbeygate continues to be enjoyed not only today but everyday, and for generations to come."
A limited number of places are available on a first come first served basis for snapshot external surveys at a cost of ÂŁ100 excluding VAT. The usual cost is in excess of ÂŁ250. To book a discounted survey, please email your purchase order to andrew.oswald@stedsbc.gov.uk using the e mail title "GBF Thermal Imaging Survey". Please make your purchase order out to St Edmundsbury Borough Council, Environmental Health and Housing Services West Suffolk House Western Way Bury St Edmunds Suffolk, IP33 3YU If you require any further information or wish to discuss any points raised, please contact Andrew Oswald on (01284) 757622.
