Welcome to the BSG Orchestra

Music Department Mission: “To create a lifelong love of music.

Aims & Objectives The British School of Guangzhou’s music department seeks to promote and celebrate music through individual and combined artistic expression. We strive to reach out to the student body by providing educational opportunities within and beyond the curriculum. It is our aim to expand individual strengths within music and provide an inspirational, positive and supportive environment that will encourage imagination, expression and artistic excellence. Welcome to the BSG Orchestra! The BSG Orchestra aims to inspire and engage students by promoting a wide range of musical and educational opportunities.

Why do we need an Orchestra? Over the past few years, music at BSG has grown considerably. We currently have three choirs who have had the opportunity to sing at many prestigious and high-profile venues across Guangzhou. The next step for the music department is to develop ensemble playing across the school. Many students have instrumental lessons both inside and outside school. In order to allow these students to develop and improve their performing skills, we would like to give them the opportunity to be part of the BSG Orchestra!

The Endangered Instruments Scheme Throughout the school, there are many students who play orchestral instruments to a high standard. While this is very positive, we need to extend the range of instruments available. Some orchestral instruments are more popular than others and therefore some orchestral instruments are in danger of being forgotten about! This also leaves the school with some gaps in the development of the orchestra. The Endangered Instruments Scheme has been established to address this issue by encouraging more students across the school to take lessons on the following instruments:

• Viola • Double Bass • Cello • Oboe • Bassoon • Clarinet • Trumpet • Trombone The scheme is open to everyone, including those who know an instrument already. It is very common in the UK for students who already have instrumental lessons, particularly pianists, to start a second instrument, as they already have the note reading ability and enough musical knowledge to advance to a good standard.

Benefits & Expectations

When you sign up for the orchestra, you will be provided with an endangered instrument and free group tuition from a specialist teacher. As part of the orchestra, you will enjoy the benefits of performing at many prestigious events in local, national and international venues. To build an orchestra takes time, dedication and hard work. Students who are currently members of the orchestra will be aware that rehearsal time is very short, as we are only able to meet for one hour per week. To address this, we invite all existing members and new members to attend an extended rehearsal every Thursday after school, running from 3 to 6pm during term time.

In order to facilitate these rehearsals, we kindly ask support from parents for return transport home after these sessions. What happens during the extended rehearsal sessions? A typical rehearsal consists of sectional practice and endangered instrument group tuition, followed by a break (refreshments available at the coffee shop) and a whole orchestra rehearsal.
