BSG Yearbook 2016/17

Page 1

Mr. Mark Thomas PRINCIPAL This has been a hugely significant year for The British School of Guangzhou, with the announcement that we will be opening a purpose-built campus in August 2020. Although still three years away, we all know just how quickly this time will pass. In the interim years, we will continue to look for opportunities to improve facilities at our South Lake Campus as we strive to provide students with the best possible international education. We will of course keep parents fully informed once we have confirmation of any further expansion plans. Looking back over the last 12 months, I can confidently say that the staff of the British School have provided truly exceptional educational opportunities to all our students. There have been so many standout moments that it is very difficult for me to single any out. However, in December, we hosted our very first Primary Winter Celebration; a hugely successful collaboration of singing, dancing and instrumental performances that is sure to be repeated. Secondary students once again wowed everyone with their stunningly professional performance of Sweeney Todd. Our thanks to everyone who performed or helped Mrs Hughes to create such an inspiring dramatic masterpiece. This was also the year that our VI Form students finally made it to Tanzania. The photographs of them working alongside underprivileged children in Africa will remain with us for a long time. As I write this Yearbook message, our Primary students are busy practising for their own musical performance of Annie, which I am sure will be another huge success. Yet again, the year has been marked by the expansion of our extra-curricular programme under the leadership of Mr Dean, our Director of Sport. Our sport’s teams have made impressive progress over the last two years, and are now the team to beat in most inter-school competitions. Mr Dean remains ambitious for his sportsmen and women, and is confident that our first FOBISIA overall winner’s trophy is not far away.

This year, we will say goodbye to Edward Pearce, who is moving to a promoted position as Principal of one of Nord Anglia’s schools in Chicago. Edward has led a number of initiatives in our Primary School over the last two years, and we wish him and his family the very best for the future. Mr. Chris Wathern, an experienced UK Head, will replace Edward, and his wife Selina will work in our Early Years department. We look forward to welcoming Chris and Selina to BSG in August and feel confident that their two sons, Rory and Theo, will quickly settle into our school. As well as saying goodbye to Edward, I really do want to say well done to Garry Russell, who has had a truly exceptional first year as Head of Secondary this year. Garry was handed a strong teaching team by Iain Ruck, but deserves the credit for the positive atmosphere that he has nurtured within his team. Garry’s experience in leading the Secondary team at Regents has stood him in good stead, and he really does deserve a relaxing holiday. I will look forward to seeing new students on Tuesday, 15th August, for our induction day, and existing students on Wednesday, 16th August. Until then, I wish you all a relaxing and safe summer holiday.

“I can confidently say that the staff of the British School have provided truly exceptional educational opportunities to all our students.”

Mr. Iain Ruck VICE PRINCIPAL 2016-17 has been another exciting year at BSG as the school continues to grow in size and ambition. It has been particularly rewarding to see our students take advantage of a number of opportunities that they are given by the school. We are committed to helping to develop a ‘Love of learning’ within our students, and their involvement in a such a wide array of initiatives is evidence for this. I have been delighted to see an increase in the number of student leadership opportunities that are present in all phases of the school. These have included initiatives where older students support younger ones or their own peers, as in the case of the reading and literacy leaders, digital leaders, young translators and ASAs leadership modules. The student councils have become more effective and more directed to school improvement, and the International Award trip has included an ambitious cycling option. I am delighted that so many students are taking part in our ever-increasing sports programme. Over 70% of all Key Stage 3 students have represented the school in sport this year, and an increase in Under 19 fixtures and our ACAMIS commitments have further extended our comprehensive programme. It has also been a very successful year with Under 13 and Under 15 FOBISIA teams winning 8 trophies from 12. Three teams in particular have shone in the PRC competitions, with the U19 Girls, U14 Boys and U14 Girls teams winning or finishing as Runners up in all of the competitions they have entered. Well done to all the students involved and their teachers for supporting this programme. The school continues to benefit from our collaboration with The Juilliard School, including alumni workshops, concerts and staff development opportunities over the year. As ever, the school productions have provided some of the highlights of the year, with Sweeney Todd and Annie serving to showcase what a talented group of students we have here at BSG. The orchestra, choir and various ensembles have performed in a number of public venues and students have also had a chance to use the school’s recording studio this year. Finally, STEAM has been very evident this year as a new Nord Anglia initiative. A group of lucky students travelled to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) as part of our latest collaboration, after winning a STEAM-focused design challenge. Our students also reached the semi-final of the global Jaguar Maths challenge and we’ve had our first ever students visit to Tanzania, where we received rave reviews about the students’ experiences on this residential trip. Well done to the students that have made the most of the opportunities here at the school, and well done for another successful academic year.

“Over 70% of all Key Stage 3 students have represented the school in sport this year.”

Mrs. Katherine Weir-Davis HEAD OF EARLY YEARS As you would expect, life in Early Years is a busy, fun-filled one from the very first day, right up until the last day of the school year. With every year, I am always amazed at how much fun and learning we can squeeze into a single year. This year, we have continued to provide our youngest students with a rich learning environment that offers them opportunities and facilities to flourish in all aspects of their development. Through play-based activities and active learning, we aim for our children to become creative and critical thinkers. The positive attitude towards learning shines through in all aspects of the school, and the stimulating, vibrant atmosphere is very evident and something that all our staff feel very proud of. Year on year, it brings me immense pleasure seeing our tiny one and two year olds transform from shy, non-verbal toddlers into outgoing, confident individuals by the end of their time with us in Early Years, and this rapid progress just doesn’t stop. After being at the school for nine years, I often visit the South Lake Campus and see many Primary and Secondary students that were with us in Early Years. They have blossomed into mature, young adults, openly showing all the qualities of our school’s Core Values of respect, responsibility, commitment and integrity – a very fulfilling and proud experience to have. Not a week passes by in Early Years without some kind of event or charity initiative taking place. We continue to have our monthly bake sales, house days, trips into the community, Chinese celebrations, Christmas performances, Sports Day, Book Week, weekly assemblies, developing our gardens and outdoor learning environment, collecting recyclable materials, birthdays – you name it we celebrate it! All these events, celebrations and charity initiatives ensure we are offering our youngest students a broad, vibrant and creative curriculum outside of the classroom, which in turn encourages our students to celebrate cultural diversity, become environmentally aware and to develop a true love of learning. On a more personal note, this year was particularly special for me as we welcomed our second adopted daughter, Jasmine, into our family and the BSG community. It has been a reminder of how important parents view the education of their children and how it is imperative that we continue to offer a world-class education for all. Without a doubt, one of the most satisfying observations from this year has been watching the children grow, develop and progress in all areas of school life. The successes and outstanding achievements reached this year has been testament to the students’ hard work and determination. The aptitude and ability to deliver a high quality education from the teachers and teaching assistants never ceases to amaze me, and with every year that passes, I am eternally grateful to their commitment to your children, our Early Years department and BSG as a whole.

“We are offering our youngest students a broad, vibrant and creative curriculum.”

WELCOME TO PLAYGROUP! Mrs. Katherine Weir-Davis PLAYGROUP LEADER BSG Playgroup is now into its 9th year and continues to be an incredibly valuable resource for international families looking for a safe and stimulating place for their children to explore, play and develop. The Playgroup also gives parents a unique opportunity to meet other families from the community with whom they can ask advice or simply share experiences with — ultimately offering a crucial social network. Playgroup takes place in our Indoor Activity Room at our Early Years Campus, which is fully air-conditioned and heated with air purifiers to ensure the highest air quality possible. Complete with ball pool, role play areas, soft play area specifically for under twos, climbing frames, slides, cars, trikes and many other stimulating resources for little ones, it is the ideal place for a fun and developmentally challenging experience. The Coffee Shop that is attached to the Activity Room is of course the crowning glory for parents, with windows looking directly into the Activity Room. Where better to relax with an invigorating cup of coffee and a delicious snack whilst being able to keep an eye on your little ones! We welcome children of all ages, so if you have a new born baby to Pre-School aged, please do feel free to join us. BSG Playgroup is free and takes place every Thursday (excluding school holidays) between 9:30-11:30am. Please note that upon your first visit, you should bring your child’s international passport for registration. There is no need to book a place, you can just come along and join in the fun! In addition to our Playgroup, we also offer an exclusive Music Class led by our Early Years Music Specialist. Further details can be obtained once you register your child at their first visit to Playgroup. Please note that the Playgroup is not exclusively for BSG families, our doors are open to the wider community – the more the merrier! The Activity Room and Coffee Shop are also available for party bookings in the evenings or at weekends – a great place to have your child’s birthday party! If you would like further details about the Playgroup or party bookings please do not hesitate to contact Ms. Kathy at Katherine.weir@bsg.org.cn or send an email to playgroup@bsg.org.cn.

Mr. Edward Pearce HEAD OF PRIMARY SCHOOL It is with mixed emotions that I find myself writing this year’s message for the yearbook. On one hand I am sad to be leaving the BSG community at the end of this academic year. However, whilst I am excited about moving on to a promoted post, my overwhelming emotion is gratitude. I feel grateful to have spent the past two years leading and partaking in many of the exciting and enjoyable opportunities that are such a part of this wonderful community. We started the year, as always, by welcoming a large number of new families to the school, and with the numbers within the Primary phase approaching 700 students, we have continued to grow successfully throughout the year. Those that are new to the school community quickly realise, as I did last year, that this is a truly unique place, full of amazing students, incredibly professional and dedicated staff and supportive parents who all work hard towards instilling and promoting a true love of learning. The children within Primary are encouraged to be personally ambitious through the promotion and exemplification of our school core values of respect, integrity, commitment and responsibility. They are encouraged to be socially ambitious in an effort to continue their growth as well-mannered global citizens, as well as being academically ambitious in striving to reach their potential under the support and guidance of our amazing academic staff. By being a part of a global family of schools within Nord Anglia Education, the world truly is their own to explore, and whilst I am moving on, I will be staying within the NAE group. I look forward to further collaborations with BSG as part of the exciting global opportunities available to us all. To the Primary parents of BSG, thank you for your ongoing support throughout the year and for taking such an active interest in your child’s education. It is a privilege to work with young minds, I have always felt this throughout my career, but the collaboration between home and school provides further opportunities to nurture and develop young minds in instilling the core values and attitudes that we all aim to promote. To the Primary staff, I thank you for your dedication, flexibility, passion, professionalism, support, spirit and from never deviating from your goal of providing the very best for all children, despite the many obstacles that appear from time to time. Finally, to the Primary students at BSG, I wish to thank you for your unwavering determination to promote our school’s core values and for making every day an enjoyable learning experience for us all. I wish you all the very best and hope to hear of your many successes in the future.

“To the Primary students, I wish to thank you for your unwavering determination to promote our core values .”

A Message From Our PSG The Primary Parents Support Group (PPSG) is a group of BSG parents with children attending the Primary School, who volunteer their time, services, expertise and experiences to the school in support of all children who attend. The objectives of the group include providing opportunities for parents to be involved and fostering greater bonds between school and parents. It has been a great year for PPSG. With the great support of the school and parent volunteers, PPSG successfully organized or provided support for many school events. Some of the highlights for the year were: Swimming Galas, Sports day, Halloween, Christmas, International Friendship Day, Teachers Appreciation Day, Children’s Day and Coffee Morning. The year kicked off with PPSG hosting the first coffee morning for the year groups 1&2. We had an impressive turnout of more than 100 existing and new BSG parents, who came together to share experiences and learn about how they can get involved in school activities. This was followed by the highly anticipated “SPOOK-TACULAR” Halloween party. Our amazing parent volunteers helped transform the BSG gym into a frightful and delightful place for our children to have a “GHOULISHLY” good time. We capped the calendar year with PPSG’s first Wishing Tree that gave the children an opportunity to give or leave a wish for a friend, teacher or loved one for the holiday season. Towards the end of the school year, PPSG organized the International Friendship Day and Children’s Day events that were geared towards celebrating friendships and honoring our children. We closed the year with our appreciation for our teachers by celebrating the Teachers Appreciation Day. For this event, our parents prepared home-cooked food and treats that were shared by all the staff and teachers. Once again, PPSG would like to thank all the volunteers for their continued support throughtout the year. We are extremely proud of everyone’s efforts. Well done!

Be Part of PPSG

Parental involvement is extremely important! It not only ensures that we have the people power necessary to put on school activities, a strong bond between the school and parents, and a positive school environment, that will definitely make our school a better place to be in! If you are interested in getting involved, need more information or would like to provide suggestions, please feel free to email to us at PPSG@bsg.org.cn.

Mr. Garry Russell HEAD OF SECONDARY SCHOOL Whether you are a teacher, a parent or a student, when you move to a new school there is always the fear that you might not fit in; the concern that all of the good things you have heard about the school may not be true. I must admit that having worked at excellent schools throughout my career, I did have some sleepless nights before arriving at BSG in August. I needn’t have worried! Not only have I (and my family) been welcomed by the whole community, but I have also had the privilege of being part of a dynamic and exciting school that never seems to take a breath. It is fair to say, from my perspective at least, that this year has flown by at BSG! I do wonder how we fit everything in. Perhaps it may be best not to stop and think too long about all of the events, activities, trips and fixtures that have taken place — let alone the fantastic day-to-day lessons that go on inside our classrooms. What is clear is that there are so many opportunities for our students and staff to get involved in at BSG. The Yearbook is such a great way to capture a snapshot of this — to reflect upon, smile, and perhaps shed a few tears over memories that we have shared as a community. Sometimes it is the big major events that stand out: MIT Trip, Tanzania Expedition, Careers Fair, FOBISIA Competitions, The Prom, International Award, Arts Celebration Evening, Sweeney Todd. Sometimes it is the ‘ongoing’ things that spring to mind: Year Group Assemblies, Lunchtime Reading, Hopeful Hearts. Whatever memories matter most to you, there are sure to be many of them encapsulated in this wonderful keepsake. It is also great to see the growing number of connections our staff and students are making with our sister schools all over the world. Whether online or face-to-face, the Nord Anglia Education community really does stretch across the globe…and it can only get bigger! The opportunities this presents are endless and the experiences for our students can only aid them as they develop as Global Citizens. The end of each year is also tinged with sadness as Year 13 move on to new challenges at university or in the world of work. No doubt they leave us with excellent qualifications, but also with the knowledge that they have BSG in their soul. I hope they also feel that they have the confidence to seek out and harness new opportunities, not in an arrogant nor aggressive way, but rather a compassionate and collaborative way. Good luck to all of those who are leaving us and do stay in touch. We also say goodbye to several of our teachers. Whatever pathway lies ahead, I wish you all the best and thank you for your dedication. Of course, for Ms Troughton and Mr Cornish, the joys and challenges of parenthood are just beginning — good luck! It has been a real pleasure to serve as Head of Secondary this year. I have been so well supported by an amazing group of teachers and Senior Leaders who are clearly passionate about everything they do. Examination results and resources are relatively easy to measure, but schools are about people, relationships and community — none of which may be easy to quantify, but in which we clearly excel.

Sigmund Freud was an Austrian neurologist and the founder of psychoanalysis. He is one of the most influential psychiatrist of the 20th century.

BRIEF HISTORY Sigmund Freud was born in Jewish family on May 6, 1856. His family was settled in Vienna and educated in there. In 1873, he started to study medicine. In 1885, Freud went to Paris as a student of the neurologist Jean Charcot. He claimed the theory that says human is unconscious in sexual and aggressive impulses. After WW1, he concentrated on his theory. In 1923, he published ‘The Ego and the Id’ theory. He had been diagnosed with cancer in 1923 and he died of cancer on 23 September 1939.

CRITICISM Freud’s theory is not good at predicting behaviour. His theory is unfalsifiable, for example, the unconscious mind is difficult to test and measure objectively. In addition, most of evidence that Freud used is unrepresentative sample. He mostly studied himself, his parents and his only child. Freud may also have shown research bias in his interpretations. He ignored information and other explanations that did not fit the interpretations. Fisher & Greenberg (1996) found little evidence of the Oedipal conflict and no support for Freud’s views on women’s sexuality and how their development differs from men'.

SELIGMAN’S ATTRIBUTION MODEL

Family, twin, and adoption studies suggest the involvement of genetic factors. The prevalence of depression in the random population (about 7% for major depressive disorder and 1% for bipolar disorder) is the baseline against which the concordance rates can be compared.

It suggests that depression is a form of learned helplessness. It occurs when people conform to giving up if they have only experienced failure.

MONOAMINE The decrease in monoamines such as serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine. Haase and Brown 2015 supports the monoamine hypothesis caused by depleted levels of norepinephrine.

CMD The cognitive model of depression suggests that making changes to thinking patterns can help a patient cope with depression. Distorted thinking is, at least part of, a cause of depression.

NEUROGENESIS Depressed patients seem to have a smaller hippocampus than general population, and their hippocampus also appear to be smaller during periods of depression. The neurogenic hypothesis suggests that depression is associated with a reduction in the birth of new neutrons in the hippocampus.

HIS WORKS The Unconscious mind & The Psyche Human’s mind is structured by three different parts; ‘Id’, ‘Ego’ and ‘Superego’.

Defense Mechanism Including repression, denial, projection, displacement, regression and sublimation Dream Analysis Analyses dreams in terms of unconscious desires and experiences. Psychosexual Stages 1) psychosexual development 2) Oedipus complex

BIOLOGICAL EXPLANATION FOR SCHIZOPHRENIA

THE DOPAMINE HYPOTHESIS

Dopamine is one of the chemicals in the brain that causes neurones to fire. This hypothesis originally stated that schizophrenia results from an excess of dopamine. This causes the neurones that use dopamine to fire too often and, therefore, transmit too many messages. This ‘message overload’ may produce many of the symptoms of schizophrenia.

MANZAR

ventricles and childhood experiences causing stress,
therefore we can only have a limited understanding of the cause of
schizophrenia. ‣ Correlational evidence: the evidence which supports the dopamine
hypothesis is only correlational. They show that dopamine is linked to the
positive symptoms, but they can't be used to support the idea that
 dopamine activity is the cause
 of the positive symptoms.

Thematic Analysis

What is thematic analysis? *

*

* The end report (after the analysis) can include ideas from the reflexive journal Thematic analysis is a widely-‐used qualitative data * The readers can judge the ‘accuracy’ of the analysis method to focus on identifying patterned analysed data presented in the report meaning across a dataset. * The reflexive journal can log how coding is done, thoughts when doing the coding, ideas that During the thematic analysis, the researcher uses develop about themes during the coding coding to group the data and, from the coding, process, and ideas that relate to the research develop a limited number of themes. Instances of question, ready for the part of the analysis that the themes can then be counted, turning links to the aims of the study. qualitative data into quantitative data, and then calculations can be carried out.

Phases in thematic analysis

Phase 1: Familiarisation with the data * involves reading and re-‐reading the data, to become immersed and intimately familiar with its content Phase 2: Coding * worked through to group together the ideas and the ideas are considered to see if they are common enough to become a theme, or whether ideas have to be grouped into one theme * coders identify the ideas in the data, and not to interpret the data into ideas * coding must be done without preconceptions about what will be found (coder who does not know question or aim / more than one coder / researcher-‐another coder) Phase 3: Searching for themes * involves examining the codes and collated data to identify significant broader patterns of meaning Phase 4: Reflexive journal * a record of the whole process, from starting with the raw data (original data)

Evaluation of thematic analysis STRENGTHS

WEAKNESSES

Community & Fundraising By Gemma Campbell, Events & Charity Manager Part of my role as the school’s Events Manager has involved working very closely with our charity committees and helping to drive initiatives throughout the school community. It has been a responsibility that I have been quite passionate about, especially since the relationship with the school and Hopeful Hearts was established 2 years ago. Hopeful Hearts are an unequivocally commendable charity that supports the life-saving heart operations of children from impoverished families. It has been an absolute pleasure working with Helen (Hopeful Hearts President), Tanya (BSG parent/Hopeful Hearts Liaison) and their team. They have enabled the transparency that has provided an insight into the way the charity works and where exactly every penny is spent. We have witnessed the process from the moment they first meet a potential ‘case’ to the point when a child has received their operation and are then discharged from hospital. This year, Hopeful Hearts have funded the successful surgery of 10 children/ babies. 5 of these were supported by the money raised from the BSG community i.e. parents, children, staff and friends. It is amazing to see how the benefits of every donation made, no matter how big or small, combined to help save the lives of those less fortunate.

In addition to raising funds, the charity enables the school to support the affiliate hospital in other ways too. Our Secondary School’s charity committee has been able to visit and deliver gifts to children who were unable to return home for Chinese New Year. The committee hopes to develop this community service in future years. As I leave this role at the end of the year, I look forward to continuing to support the school’s charitable initiatives in other ways. I would like to thank everyone for your continued generosity and support in helping to keep young hearts beating. 5 Hopeful Hearts Cases Supported Using BSG Funds All of the families were of low income, and for various reasons, were unable to afford the entire cost of the vital heart operations and hospital care to save their children. Hopeful Hearts accepted their cases and used the funds raised by The British School of Guangzhou’s community to help each family with the cost of their life-saving surgery.

Lu Le (5-year-old boy) He was first diagnosed with heart disease immediately after he was born, but doctors thought it wasn’t urgent to operate at that time. At 5 years old, he began to develop a fever and was admitted to hospital. It was recommended he receive heart surgery to prevent a life-threatening condition in the near future. Jiang Zi Sheng (1-month-old boy) Shortly after birth, he was diagnosed with pneumonia. Once in the intensive care unit, they found out he had a heart defect. Zheng Zi Hao (1-year-old boy) This case was very serious. He was born with his heart on the right-hand side instead of the left and had many other complications. He had already received one heart operation and now needed a second one. Bai Yu Ruo (5-month-old girl) Born in Hainan, she spent 3 months in the intensive care unit. She was too ill to be moved and the local hospital lacked specialist skills to help her. All they could do was keep her alive. As she grew, her condition became stable enough to move her to Guangzhou, where she could receive the required treatment. Chen Yunyang (3-month-old boy) He was submitted to hospital with pneumonia, was extremely underweight and weak and urgently required heart surgery. He had other associated health conditions that will require medical intervention once the heart surgery is done.
