PLAYING

P I A N O has always been my passion since I was a little girl. It

was not only my hobby; my big family has always been supportive knowing that I could play in family gathering, such as Christmas. I was the only one who can play the piano proficiently. Since then, performing in front of people has always been the thing that I should be struggling with hence; I myself had realized that I should be glad and make the most of the talent for something useful like entertaining other people. Enjoyment of creative expression when pressing my fingers toward the boards while singing the melody inside my head is such an extraordinary matter for me. I have taken piano lesson since I was in Kindergarten at the age of 4.One thing that has supported me to finish this whole project is the astonished fact of how classic composer could create particular combination of rhythms, timbres and pitches, which lodged in people’s memory. Knowing the fact that our pulse will swell every time we hear parts of music piece. As long as I can remember, piano has played an integral part of my life.

When I was in grade 7, I discovered that music has been a personal getaway when

I couldn’t express something in words. Playing minor song in forte could relieved the pressure inside my head, especially when I feel angry. The keyboards and pedal are the perfect places where I could lay it on.

My main topic for the personal project is how to create a composition of music,

which could energize people to get happy. I expected the listener could perform maximally in their works after tasting the good feeling. It is obvious that the final composition should be able to undertake people’s mood. Owing the fact that this is my first time on making composition, I decided to use classic for its model and style considering my 8 years of my piano classic study. As a result of the long-term study in both practical, theoretical and a little bit of historical, I have the motivation to create this piece.

Classic might be the most tedious music genre to choose. Nevertheless, classic

has always been the music that has inspired me most of the time: skill, proficient technique, philosophy, and infinite varieties of each style. Classic music captures flow, harmony and often conveys emotion which especially make it sounds alive. It’s always been feels different for a teenager like me to have so much passion toward this genre. We all know that most of young people are currently listening to contemporary genre such as pop, rock and indie. My personal goal for this project is to challenge myself for inventing something new : to use my talent that could raise young people’s awareness in reviewing the kind of HOW CAN MUSIC AFFECTS PEOPLE’S MOOD 4

music they listening to. I am wholly concern about the different effects that music could give to our body, mind, and our life. Therefore, I believe it is very important to have a deep understanding; to know our needs, use it as advantages, and most of all: to enjoy the real art of music.

When first began this project, I visualized that this goal is going to be achieved by

making a piece of classic composition fully made with personal thoughts, experiences, theory and a little bit inspiration of different classic composers from the renaissance era. Throughout these activities, I aspire that teenagers could have higher comprehensions to identify of music, how music associate with themselves, develop life lesson knowledge to support, and accomplishing a good life.

The Area of Interaction that suits best for my Personal Project is Human Ingenuity,

seeing that it’s all about how I could make the composition by gaining new cognition and develop my skill through out process ‘learning by doing’. As consequences, resulted good mood of the composition will be my substantial achievement of my final product. I was also constantly creating, designing, producing indigenous ideas , as well as developing my understanding to music. I believe all the processes were altogether relates to this Area of Interaction. By the spirit of inquiry, a deep self-motivation, and enthusiasm to do things in excellence, I believe I could have been fully completed my personal project. HOW CAN MUSIC AFFECTS PEOPLE’S MOOD 5

“I don't know if it's a sign of all the chaos that is happening out there or not, but I've lately craved the structure and order of classical music, the balance and symmetry.” -Helen Reddy

T H E I N V E S T I G AT I O N that I carried out was divided into two different streams;

first, researching for the fact of music role for individual, society, different culture, and era. After further discussion with Mr.Chin and having enough visualization of how music effecting people, I choose to put more focus on the process and particular type of brain responses when we listening to different type of music. Part two was used for researching instrumental piano songs that could possibly fit as case study or inspiration as a starting point of making the product. These two researches are equally crucial because they complement each other.

To begin this project, I have done variety different kind of research to get a deep

understanding about how music has a powerful role in people’s life. From individual, it’s affected human in many ways, through: brain, mind, vibration, and sound wave. I have read two books called ‘This is Your Brain on Music’ and ‘Beethoven 5th Symphony’.

‘This is Your Brain on Music’ has successfully interrogating the basic nature of hear-

ing and of music both figuratively and literally. After spent hours to understand the contain, I found out about the overall process when the vibrations of the sound or an instrument

firstly entered the ear, strike the ear drum and get amplified by tiny bones in the middle ear which continuously striking the cochlea. Then, the membrane that separates the different chambers in the cochlea varies in stiffness .The stiffness is what causing different section to vibrate at a different frequency. The vibrations then get picked up by tiny hairs inside the organ of corti , from this point the vibrations moved inside the head. It is make sense why sad or dissonant music directly starts the activation amygdala, which regulates human’s negative emotion, whereas happy or harmonic music can trigger dopamine release (works the same way like drugs).

It takes a symphony of neural signals to appreciate a symphony because music is

not just an aesthetic response, it’s a hardwired to what we feel. In addition the book includes the explanation of possibilities that neurons could make when it works actively once we receive vibration. Theres a lot of examples in interrogating the basic nature of hearing music which leads to amazing evolution that human brain could make in music, art, science and society. He uncovers fundamental ways of how songs communicate emotion and ideas, so music have built human nature. The Beethoven book has very good examples of how music has given effects to societies for the last 40 decades, applied in historical event. I found out the making of Beethoven 5th symphony that has significant meaning (special message contained in the first four notes in the intro). Another book source that I used to support this research are a music book called ‘John Thompson’s ’ . I was finally HOW CAN MUSIC AFFECTS PEOPLE’S MOOD 7

decided to used the book because it is clearly explained the technique that are used to play each song which came from different period of time, culture, and music development. This book was also contained the information about social life and culture background of world well-known composers such as Beethoven, Bizet and J.S Bach.

Researching for the inspirations itself was less stressful rather than reading articles

about how scientist have done hundreds of research in discovering how it affects people. Therefore, to support my online research I met some people and did live interviews. In this activity my aim was for getting to know the real life example about their personal perspective through music. By this activity I could understand why people seeing things differently about music, some of their ideas has helped me to supported the background idea of this project that: Music which was created by and for people has very significant effects and meaning in people’s life its showing feelings, emotions, culture and most of all it is also a form of art. However, persons that I had interview with, have their own talent, specified activity or hobby which involving music especially with the piano : a music professor, a student, a ballerina, a band owner and a musician who study music for healing. All in all, in order to know teenager’s interpretation for music in general, I have also made and distributed a survey in Google Docs to able to see their perspective of in seeing music as an important aspect of their life.

Watching a piano recital and a classic opera were one of the best parts of this

project. During my previous winter holiday I spent a couple hours to watched ‘The Phantom of the Opera ’. My intensity was on observing how the music flows and how it changes altogether with the acts. Throughout this activity I was able to identified why music has made effects in people’s life; when making the music, people think creatively of how they could creates the mood and perspectives, afterwards it creates the mood on stage which automatically processed human brain, the corresponding memories of people, and the music itself are inseparable . The extensive of resources that was available helped me to go deep in my topic. I started my research by Googling, then found out subjective website. I subscribed to Albert Franz’s educational website Key-notes, which has helped me in reviewing my theory understanding.

“Classical music's ability to translate emotional themes is fantastic.” - Alan Price

A C C O R D I N G T O M Y O B S E R V A T I O N I concluded that resulted good

mood from a composition could be created by making a music that able to release us from the cruelty and conscious thought. Brainstorming ideas were done before I started designing the composition. It is essential to put in my mind that the song should have these basic criteria: smooth, soothing, enjoyable, and overlaying excellence pace so people wouldn’t get boring. According to my research I found out that music for healing could be used in daily life for relaxation, to gain energy when feeling down, to dealing with emotional ways, and especially became a tool that could be helpful for our stress management. Merging this process with my own personal life situation, I realized that I was stressing out on school works, how to finish this project, and deal with peoples around me, so it is make sense why I choose to listening to some song which has slow tempo and flowing pace. As It was found that a slower tempo promoting a calm and meditative state. This is the moment where the brain are also enable to shift speeds more easily on its own as needed, means that music can bring lasting benefits to state of mind even after we’ve stopped listening.

In this stage, I strongly think about how effectively I could start and finish my composi-

tion remaining the deadline of the product and the exhibition. I precisely count and set the H O W C A N M U S I C A F F E C T S P E O P L E ’ S M O O D 10

timing in making the core of the song that included: exposition, climax, and ending. Therefore, in these last 4 months starting from the mid-December I spent any possible time to finish each part in 1 week. The idea for every part came randomly so I did not work on it in sequence. Indeed to make each part equally, I precisely 7 days to create each part.

My

method when doing the product was working at home at midnight where I could gather all my concentration away from the school works, which were done earlier in the afternoon. The 4th week was used to create the recap and then the next two weeks afterwards were used for final recheck focused on the overall flow of the song as well rehearsing for the performance.

The first 3 weeks was horrible. During the day, I always try to check my emotion every

time I have time to concentrate to listen to classic pieces. Spent my lunch time in the piano room were also a good time to do trials or even over-improvisation. Unconsciously, along with this process I could extended chords which creates unique sounded chords that could match with the melody neither major or minor. Obtaining different style of inspiration has helped me to stick the melody inside my head. At night, I spent hours and hours in front of the piano and tried to combine the notes with matched chords. As a piano learner I have no experts on making a real classic music piece. Since I found that this experience is a new thing, I decided to construct the left-hand part with breaking down the major, minor, extended and major seventh chords. The right hand part was developed from single notes to H O W C A N M U S I C A F F E C T S P E O P L E ’ S M O O D 11

some couple, triads notes, and mixture of them. Each part has different character and specification. For example, exposition is like giving the first impression to the audience. This part is fundamental, because the audience will get the perspectives from the first time my composition started. Therefore, in my final product I created a short, light intro , started from the quint perfect intervals high sounded, which represents cheerful yet calm impression to the audience.

In reviewing sound of the overall of composition, I should create 3 tiny part that could

connect each part harmonically. Those part last for averagely 5 seconds and could be in the form of either chord, single, double, triad, tetrad notes. Just like drawing, I first write the notes in sketch, in seeing the pattern and different path of where the song goes. The entire notation was recorded in separate different color sticky notes. With this, I could easily found the detailed of each part, its form, and specified difference to make it in different variation. The meaning of each part has illogical combination of style and sound, my work might be a combination of wild imagination from my own emotion. I used these methods to translate my emotions into notes that my unconscious mind could have been tried to express.

As I have mentioned earlier, playing piano is more than just performing music, but also

to show technique as well as convey a certain emotion, belief, and culture. While final polishing the composition I watched some videos on YouTube that explain brain responses when

hearing different level of sounds. Harmonious blending and rhythmic unity of balance are strongly needed to attaching the whole composition.

My first plan in writing the composition was using Sibelius student, a digital software

that could able us to write the note and check how it sounds like. Suggested from Mr. Chin, in the early December I got the trial pack of the software from Miss Allison. Unfortunately, the trial pack was expired once I was still in the holiday which means plan B was my only left choice. Nadia, who had the same guiding question of her personal project, suggested me to try Garage Band.

Before recording the polished finish piece, I spent another week to practice my piece

both at home and school. I was also play it during break and ask people’s feed back after listening to the composition. Most of them said that it was quiet good, but I have to strengthen the way I play it so the mood could be delivered clear but smoothly. Then I did a trial using MIDI, set different adjustment while pressing the keyboards because it was totally different with playing on the piano. Before recording the overall song, I check each part and did intense practicing just like what I did in facing a music final exam. After 3 times playing the song from beginning to end, I choose the best one and tried to edited some pedal part which wasn’t look make sense. Finally, I printed the final product with broken-white colored paper to make it looks good and the product was completely done.

The name Nocturne was chosen because of the linking idea from my inspiration and

situation, happened during the process. My inspiration, Chopin was a classic composer which well known for his virtuous romantic compositions using piano as his special character. He had rare gift of a very personal melody, expressive of heart felt emotion that bring the listener into the secret place of his heart. He stated ‘Play the way you feel’ which altogether matched with the meaning of the word Nocturne: a practice music piece generally calming, often expressive, rather gloomy and dreamy character of night. Seeing the background, I decided to use the word Nocturne as the title of my composition.

the exhibition with my composition. I was nervous and made slight mistakes in some little part. Thankfully, most of the audience responded positively. Preparing to be aware with the overall view from the audience, I have created a simple survey on the GoogleDocs so at the end of the day, after the first day of the exhibition I could send the link to the whole grade 10 plus some teachers that have visited my booth.

For the second day I provided sticky notes so the visitors could be able to give

feedback or evaluation. Most of them were responded positively for both days. In the exposition, I brought up light intro and clear melody, which could be the fundamental pattern for the whole composition. I put mono-thematic exposition, which means that my composition have identical opening and closing theme. If we hear it closer, the whole shape of the composition is like a circle: it starts and closes with a same little part that formed them like a cycle/circle. In order to raise the mood into the climax part, I wrote some double variation of note combination. I also use multiple combination of octave interval with different stress of tempo. This part was combined with major seventh broke up chords that was matched

with the rhythm of melody part. More over, the recapitulation has rearranged the order of the theme and mood determined. Audience could clearly hear the emotion development through out the whole piece; from calm, confusedness of problem that leads into sadness, climax of issues, solution, and back into the calming outs.

I’m pretty satisfied with the application I work with which is the Garage Band. Al-

though I wanted to make each bar to be divided equally, rather than unstructured. I should have been also added the key signature (#) because my composition is in the G major key. The mess and wrong counted rhythm give different impression to the reader of the music score. In performing, I should have also played it more neatly because in some video I could hear the over-bearing echo. It was caused by the wrong counting in using the pedal. This mistake make the melody sounds wrong, hard. Harsh which interpret different moods .In addition I should have also play it a little bit slower to make the emotion more alive.

Against the specification stated on the introduction, the composition should make

people happy. I honestly wasn’t fully felt happy when listening to the composition. Although, I believe that my composition could be very useful for those who need relaxation for controlling mood with it nightly effects from the title. The soft texture of my composition is enjoyable for those who enjoy romantic music; It has different parts, which symbolized it as different types of feelings all in one piece. The smoothly flow which moves ahead through out the song is compatible to deliver the message about the emotion that could H O W C A N M U S I C A F F E C T S P E O P L E ’ S M O O D 16

be delivered through the art of music. Even if I couldn’t deliver the perfect happy mood toward the audience, I had used excellence quality of material: book, classic song, method and skill in making this song. With these evidence convinced that the information does relate to the goal of my project: making a composition that could affect people’s mood.

I HAVE MADE SOMETHING FROM THE HAND TO THE EAR,

from me to the

audience. I enjoyed the silence when trying the combination of melody with chords part which required silence for optimal concentration. Throughout the process I developed my knowledge of how music affects people in many ways.

First of all, I have learned how sound of music went through the instrument, to the

air, and to our body. The vibration, frequency and resonance paralleling tied in each other. Secondly, I learned why have musician invented those written theory; the frequency when the string being stroked by hammers has been counted for designed and complement each other in harmony. The major, minor, and other specific rule of combination which then could affect the mood of the song. Third, I have learned how musician around the world could celebrate their genius creativity and passion to express their feeling as well as helping other people to make good music that can change our outlook and affect our soul. It is said that a positive outlook on life can change the happiness that people feel. Believing in that change music can have on emotion and behavior can lead to a more productive positive outlook on life.

Working with different people has definitely shown me another perspective of Human

Ingeunity. What used to only mean ‘something that is man made’ is now extended into something much more powerful and most of all influential. I believe that by collaboration and solid teamwork, people could be one step closer into putting something ‘big’ together. Throughout the past few decades, we see new inventions and technologies that have creH O W C A N M U S I C A F F E C T S P E O P L E ’ S M O O D 18

ated an impact to the society. All of this goes back to having a good idea, but making it great by teaming up with people that are able of developing them. Seeing world as the environment, using reliable source and design effective strategy has helped me to develop learning behavior skill. Communicating with supervisor and doing interviews helped me to communicate better in explaining my ideas in vocal. Unexpectedly, the part I enjoyed the most is being able to meet new people. They have opened my thought to the new horizon of understanding music. To be perfectly honest, I don’t have any regrets in the decisions I made for the overall process. Therefore, If I am able to restart this project all the way from zero the only thing I would change is my time management to make an even better quality of this project.

The Personal Project is a valuable opportunity that brought the best of my self. Not

only I was able to showcase my talents, but I also realized that it was also a time to share the learning experience. It’s crucial on how to continuously maintain my commitment and responsibility to work on something that requires deep understandings. I am very happy for the exhibition, not only celebrating my work, but also to meet people and tell them about the valuable learning process. It was such a satisfactory performance to give pleasure to myself as well as people around me. In explaining my work I have also learn how to improve my self-confidence , being a reflective learner that has full understanding in the product itself. Although the hard work paid off with once in a lifetime experience. This project has help me to brought up the balance between the left and right brain. Not simply a well-done personal project but also I realized that this project has become profound experience of my selfinvestigation, development and improvement for the future.

A true music lover understands the transformation what music does to us. People

needs to embrace this and pay more attention to the effects of the music they listen to in

their lives, Not all music lover out there utilize the calming affects of music and should launch into the life changing effects that music can do.

`As my conclusion, I believe that I have answered my guiding question: “How can

Music Affects People’s Mood?”. A good music should help people to get daily life for relaxation and reap the positive affects and desire it invokes, to gain energy in order to Keep the optimism in higher levers could also bring other benefits afterwards. Music a universal language which could be enjoyed by all people around the world. Even more, the music we enjoy should be expressing our inner self-thought or emotion. We should use music as an artistic media that could be used to transform the culture around the globe.

Honestly, this project has opened my mind to choose music as one of the possibility

major in the university. However, I’m still curious about my future career, and proceed in learning classical music might be one of my best choices. All the hard work became worth the struggle after actually witnessing that my project could grow into fruition and triumph. Being able to share something I love to give advantaged to a group of people is not just something to be proud of, it is a one kind experience that one would cherish for life.

1. What is your product going to look like/be? My final product is going to be •

One free composition of my free creation.

My research result

Which will be in an e-book/ scrapbook •

My self-perspectives about music and my learning outcomes after finishing the product

(Form: iMovie/ Presentation) 2. What techniques are you going to use to make/complete the product; you may list a variety here and then choose one •

Taking some part of classic song I like which have the mood that would fit in the mood of my composition and move to the key of my composition and mix up with the other part of the song

3. Explain the stages that you will need to go through to complete it Composition 1. Choosing the key for the composition 2. Choosing the tempo and beats 3. Making the intro, middle part and outro part. (The structure of the composition) 4. Sketching the melody starting from the last part of the song (the very important part which conclude all the moods I have in the song) 5. Fit in the notes bar, draw the notes and make sure the entire symbols needed are right in place. 6. Move to the Sibelius 6 Students (make it digital) 7. Make sure everything right in place •

The mood: happy, sad

Research Result I’m going summed up all the main information which is really important and needed to make my product. It will be easier for me to make it in the form of scrapbook. So in the exhibition I’ll explain the audience how i design and make the work. H O W C A N M U S I C A F F E C T S P E O P L E ’ S M O O D 12

Really showed the Major and minor, listener should be able to identify the structure of the song

Building up

Main song (middle part)

Finishing part

Asking other people perspective, asking for feedback and comment to make some evaluation to the song.

Practice until the exhibition

Why did you choose this way of showing your product, is it going to be successful Because I found myself work better with my hand than directly using the software and with trying the new chords for many times will make me find more interesting combination of chords which will make the sound as I wanted. I’ll get used to the song and as I keep going making the composition, I’ll get usual with the writing system, notes connection etc.

Making the core of the song will directly guide me to build up the melody, as I wanted which is match up with each part. In addition I will build up from the intro, middle and outro part so the mood will become more real. How will these techniques help you show your understanding of the area of interaction? Through these techniques I’ll think how to entertain the listener and how to make them interesting in my creation. And also with this step I will learn how to create the product connecting back to my AOI.

Interview with national harpist, studying music for healing: Maya Hasan. October 24th 2011 (Live) 1. Why are you enjoying music as your passion as well as your job? With Music we could express everything .When I feel sad, lonely or even happy I play music either with my instrument or shuffling song in my iPod. However, music was used to be only my own general hobby . Lucky me, now its became my job and a part of my life. I’m so glad that I could play the Harp. I am so glad that I could play harp.I’m now following my passion which other people appreciate it.

2. What kind of genre do you play? Is there any specification? Through out my career until now I have been played Classic, Pros over , Pop, rock,Indonesian Traditional, Irish, and Jazz. I always change my genre accordingly to my mood. You couldn’t forced yourself to listening all kind of music, only listening to the music you enjoyed the most.

3. Why did you choose harp? Is there anything special about the instrument you played with? Well actually,I don’t know. There’s something about the sound itself. I have

re-

searched on internet and some of the book. Base on science ideas: the way of the H O W C A N M U S I C A F F E C T S P E O P L E ’ S M O O D 22

string plugged into the body part of the harp has the same idea of human body. I have also heard according to a science research it explained that: Harp have the most perfect sound wave than the other instrument. The sound enharmonic perfectly. A harp of string have complete spectrum and there is no resistance. Why I love it the most because, I just love it the sound of harp is perfect. It is like a diamond, sounds crystal clear to my ear. Harp is the most mythological link instrument.

4. Why is it “mythological?”

Because the structure of the instrument is base on the human body. The shape is also supporting the quality the sound. So all in all, as a musician I’m very happy because I can stay fit and healthy as well as feel happy at the same time!

5.Could you explain more of how the body connects with sound, frequency and vibration? If you talk about sounds and human body, it needs years and years to basically understand. Before I took a extended course about the Music for Healing. I learnt that every human body organs and its link to instruments as well as sound wave. Every single organ in our body is linking with each different frequency. Our own body is a frequency. For example when we are blinking our eyes, tapping our foot, our heart H O W C A N M U S I C A F F E C T S P E O P L E ’ S M O O D 23

beat, our blood circulation and the peristaltic movement of our tongue. Again, every organ has its own frequency and of course a different kind of special sound.

When we hear the sound of harp, all of our body part are corresponding. Smooth because our body is in one line thats why its symmetric

( our body divided into 2

parts) . Human body supposed to be pure clean and healthy . It has to be pure. That is why musicians are often tuned their instruments before they start playing. Unconsciously, the instrument itself could be a damage to our own body,

6. How does the body respond the sound?

Associating any kind of connection with sounds, it should be ear as the first organ to process the sound wave. Seventy percent of human body consisted of liquid. Therefore, through liquid the sound and brain wave transformed. The result is 5 times faster comparing to air or solid.. Scientifically, a good quality of sound will transform “good wave” which be produced transformation in a good way. All of these things, happen frequently and human often unconsciously.

Interview with s band member digital recording composer: Reuben Nathaniel January 26th 2012 (via Facebook Chat)

1. What is your personal definition of music you? Okay, Music is a of things to me. The key word is expression. I remembered when we learn about people basic characters with one of junior high school teacher). When you hear someone's song don't you feel like you know a bit of the writers character. That happens because when you write a song and play music you also transfer your feelings to it. Some people make songs to impress, to persuade, to make people think, to refresh themselves, sometimes you make music when you're too embarrassed to be seen talking to yourself. Music to me is our expression of things and honesty.

2. Tell a little bit about your instrument and genre you've ever played. Well, my first instrument was obviously Angklung that I got from Tirtamarta, my kindergarten.. Haha to be serious I was also played a small pianika but when I first got in to a music course I was taught of classic piano. There was a lot of theories in there and as a lil' kid i think its natural that I quickly got bored. Then I saw my cousin play classical guitar and I liked the idea of playing it. When I asked my teachers they actually said that my fingers are suited to playing bass at first. I studied a bit of guitar with my cousin and mom home beH O W C A N M U S I C A F F E C T S P E O P L E ’ S M O O D 25

fore i take another course to pick up more skills. I have tried them all really. But as it's more 'portable', guitar's my main instrument right now, I think portable is also the reason why many people play and learn guitar quicker. Talking about Genre, again I have played them all. even dangdut!! That's the way I am always taught to play by my teachers. To them it's important to "know" all the genres, how to play them, and their feel. 3. Did u learn by yourself or join a course? Is it your personal decision/someone else told you to? I don't know whether it was my, parents decision? It all happened so quickly and randomly even. It was God's decision.

4. When did you usually enjoy music? I enjoy music every time. But I gotta be honest that certain music are more suited in certain situations. In my opinion, for example Bruno mars' "lazy song" is not suited to lazy times

5. Did you prefer to use music as background (like when working on something) or you just listening to music .Tell me why plus your favorite artist. Some of my class mates study better with music in the background. That doesn't happen to be the case with me. Latter one. It's just because it makes me lose focus I guess.. my favorite artists are TheScript, Kris Allen because of their voice and Coldplay's Chris martin as he's a Musician with character. I like acoustic music.

6. Did ever music affecting your mood? If yes, what kind of mood?and please tell me little more detailed about it

Music does effect your mood. But once again that happens more to some people. As a musician, other people's music doesn't really affect my mood directly. It a ffects my music. I like listening to Christian Music every day on my way to school on the bus. Because it'll help set my mindset that He's given me another day not to be wasted. Then when i walk to school i'll sing a more positive words will come out of my Mouth in to my songs for the day. Your own music affects your mood. Like (Other music >effects>My music>effects>mood>day) that's how it's related in my opinion.

6. How your band was firstly made? who's your inspiration? Last but not least.., could you give me any inspiration/ tips to make a good music composition H O W C A N M U S I C A F F E C T S P E O P L E ’ S M O O D 27

This is what i told you before bi.. none of us planned this.but my mom prayed when we first got our piano course report that we want to glorify Him through our music (actually i was ranked no.1 that day!! haha) I do believe that He's got a beautiful, unique plan for each one of His Sons. Us all Inspiration can be taken from anyone really. especially now in the day that everyone is so easy to reach. But i have to tell you that my Biggest inspiration is always Jesus and the bible. i believe He always wants to say something to us, and why wont He use me? Before i make songs with my band we pray.. i dont have any specific tip to give but bringing up a topic is a good way to start your lyric. than the usual brainstorming proccess (usually done by jamming together singin or spend some time alone talking to yourself. we have songs within Ourselves waid.. Tip 1> Dont ever feel satisfied after you finished your song draft. alwaysthink " what i can do to make it better". p 2> make the other listen to it as neutrals. ask for comments tip 3. edit and think whether youve sent youre "messages" or not... thats all for now bi youre very welcome. Nite

Good luck finishing your project. hope it helps. Gbu

Interview with music professor, teacher, composer, music arranger , a music school owner: Tjut Nyak Deviana Daudsjah. February 4th 2012 (Live )

1. What is Music? Well if you ask me about music, we have to go back and start from history. The history of music was started from a title of Greek mythology. The muses were the Goddesses of the Arts and Literature and were also the daughters of Zeus (the central god of the Greek pantheon) and Mnemosyne (the personification of memory). They spent nine nights together and that is how the muses were created. They are the entire brother hood from Apollo. In Greek mythology, they believed that the Ninth Muses are the one who protect sciences and arts.

The word muse probably derives from an Indo-European word for “mind.” Words deriving from the Muses’ connection with the arts and learning include music and museum. That moment, all the civilians they were often to praise the Dionysus Gods which were believed as a God of through theater performance. The Greek mythology that time was base on the Pythagoras theory which was transform to the art, dance, drama and music. They

used the word muses then as time goes by they change the name into muziki, and the word we know today, music. So, music literally is the art of composing melody. And why they called it music? because, we know music from Pythagoras. Pythagoras was invited from the universe or cosmology, which all basing on mathematics. For example note C has the frequency of the sun, the tone of the sun. So I can say that music is God’s . Music is not easy to define the understanding of music; all the things in the universe are just like music. Therefore, a professional such as a doctor, astronomy are often easier to study music because they have to be expert in understanding of mathematics. 2. Wow, that’s a lot. And how about classic music itself? There are many people out there who said that the root of any genre of music is classic. Could you please tell me about it? If you ask me about classic music, we should look from its era devition . The Middle Ages : - After the collapse of the Roman Empire in the 5th century AD, Western Europe entered a time known as “The Dark Ages” — a period when invading hordes of Vandals, Huns, and Visigoths overran Europe. These years were marked by constant warfare, the absence of a Holy Roman Emperor, and the virtual disappearance of urban life. Over the next next nine

centuries, the newly emerging Christian Church came to dominate Europe, administering justice, instigating “Holy” Crusades against the East, establishing Universities, and generally dictating the destiny of music, art, and literature. It was during this time that Pope Gregory I is generally believed to have collected and codified the music known as Gregorian Chant, which was the approved music of the Church. Much later, the University at Notre Dame in Paris saw the creation of a new kind of music called organum. Secular music was performed throughout Europe by the troubadours and trouveres of France. And it was during these “Middle Ages” that Western culture saw the appearance of the first great name in music, Guillaume de Machaut. 1. 11th century, there was a memorable figure Guido de’ Arizzo He was a pastor who invented easier ways for the worshipers to sing in church. He became music theorists who invented the 5 lines in the piano bar from the hand line . Still with the mixture of Pythagoras theorem he was the one who figured out the musical notation. He composed a song for Johane. The melody sulabut do,re,mi. Those kind of notation then was changed into English phrase: Do,re,mi . 2. Do-mine is Jesus Christ. A.D The year of the Lord. B.C Before Christ. After the Romanian Empire.

3. That moment, the only people and society who were abled to learn about those music is only the pastors , Christians. Since the musical notation was invented a lot of people want to learn about those music. The Renaissance: Rebirth 1. That was the moment of improvisation of the using of music. 2. Ballet was invented and developed 3. Galileo Galeli and Da Vinci were also invented their creations in this period of time 4. Christian no longer having much restriction through the music 5. A lot of compoer born from that era 6. The period from the end of the 15th century has become known as the High Renaissance, when Venice and Rome began to share Florence’s importance and Raphael, Leonardo da Vinci, and Michelangelo were active. Renaissance thinking spread to the rest of Europe from the early 16th century and was influential for the next hundred years. The Baroque Era: •
