Why Elizabeth Grullรณn is

so Happy With Her Acting Roles

6 | BSM MAGAZINE | BSMANDMEDIA.COM

Actress Elizabeth Grullón has been busy appearing in a remake of the popular 90s show, “Party of Five,” and a part of the “Star Wars Jedi” video game series. Her body of work also includes guest starring on one of the longest medical dramas on television. Read more here. By: La Trisha M And La Tasha T. (Twins Of Media) Photos by: Ashley Nguyen

Q: You recently made a guest appearance on “Grey’s Anatomy.” What was it like booking the episode, and were you able to work with Grey’s veteran actor Ellen Pompeo and famed director Debbie Allen? I did! It was one of the most positive and rewarding experiences I’ve had in this industry. I didn’t work with either of the iconic women you mentioned, but I did get to work with a brilliant female director named Allison Liddi Brown as well as the incredibly talented Richard Flood. They were so supportive and present as we navigated those emotional scenes.

Q: You star in the brand new Freeform series “Party of Five” based on the 1994 Fox series of the same name. Have you had the opportunity to watch the original series as well? Also, tell us more about your character Theresa Sullivan’ aka “Sully.” I was a fan of the original series. I used to love watching it with my big sister. Sully is amazing - she’s a compassionate warrior who has devoted her life to the service of her community. She’s well informed, brave, and she leads with love. Sully becomes a friend and mentor to Emily Tosta’s character Lucia.

Q: Congratulations! You recently performed full motion capture for the highly anticipated video game “Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order” as the central antagonist ‘The Second Sister;’ aka ‘Trilla Suduri.’ You also have become a fan favorite and officially part of the Star Wars canon, including your very own action figure. Did you have any interest in gaming before this project came about? Thank you! It’s so surreal! I grew up playing Mario Kart, Super Mario Bros., Donkey Kong, Zelda, and things like that. The world of gaming has evolved a lot since then! I still enjoy playing, but I’m not the best, ha! JFO is so beautiful and cinematic; it’s an incredible experience!

Q: Our world is currently in a health crisis as we deal with the Coronavirus pandemic. First, how are you and your family doing? Secondly, what are some things you have implemented during this time of quarantine to keep up the momentum of positive thinking and self-care? Also, are you involved with any charitable organizations that you would like to speak about that can provide assistance to those in need? My family and I are healthy and I thank God for that. It’s hard to believe the devastation this virus has caused all over the world. My heart goes out to everyone suffering right now, in any way. I’m taking it really easy. I’m practicing gratitude, sleeping a lot, eating well, taking hot showers and long baths. That’s what feels right to me. Taking the pressure off to be productive or brilliant.

Q: Do you have any new projects coming up that you can discuss at this time? I am completing my directorial debut, a short film called Ash. Later this year, I will be shooting a feature film entitled Saturn, which is so exciting! I also have plans to meet many of my fans at conventions throughout the year, but we shall see. The Coronavirus has shifted everything for all of us, so I’m not holding too tightly to my plans. This is a time for us to be patient and find our centers while we wait for the future to arise. Rapid Fire Questions... Favorite Food? Arroz con pollo Favorite Hobby? Meditation, going for a walk, napping Favorite actor/ actress? Leonardo DiCaprio, Emily Blunt Favorite movie/ television show? I love Pulp Fiction & The Wizard of Oz. As for TV, The Wire was insane, Breaking Bad… too many to mention! The ELECTRIC

A

ntre’chelle The Electric Personality is a woman who says, “I’d rather people hate me for who I am than love me for who I am not.” The Houston native is a proud alumna of Texas Southern University. We caught up with the mom of a toddler who is a media force, unlike anyone that limits their star quality. Read more here.

Q: How is it raising your genius baby boy during these uncertain times? My son Axum Nova will be 2 years old in August and he's performing on a 4-year-old level. During these uncertain times, we have been keeping his routine pretty normal. He is focusing on building words as well as basic sight words. His father has started teaching him Spanish so that's really fun to watch. I'm more concerned if the daycare will be able to keep up with his high level of intelligence once everything gets back to normal.

Q: In what ways do you see yourself thinking outside the box to forge your path in media? I don't ask for permission or follow the normal traditional trends when it comes to media. I focus on projects that allow me to creatively express myself or the message that needs to be said. I refuse to ask for permission to convey my electric voice.

I direct messaged 25 women saying "Hey! I'm producing a show called Eating with Sis! (Sis is you.) I'm bringing you food, and we're gonna talk okay?" All the women responded with excitement saying, "YES! Can't wait!" or "I'm ready, Sis!" I was shocked! This random thought in my head became a reality before I could even professionally put it together. Now that I had their buy-in, I had to produce. Two weeks later, we shot seven shows in three days, and the response has been beyond what I was expecting.

“I don’t ask for permission or follow the normal traditional trends when it comes to media”

Q: Tell us how did you come up with the concept of Eating With Sis! A show through your Novaland media team? I was scrolling through my IG feed, and I realized that I'm following some very powerful women. I started thinking, "I would love to have lunch or drinks with her." Instead of wishing and hoping,

Q: Funniest interview you've ever conducted?

The funniest interview I've ever conducted wasn't funny to me until a year later. I was LIVE streaming the red carpet for a scholarship gala. I had a chance to interview a well-known restaurateur in the community. Before the interview, he seemed a little nervous, so I went over a couple of sample questions and made sure he was comfortable being on camera. Once the camera went LIVE, he transformed into a whole different creature. He started over talking me, pulling people into the interview, trying to take my mic out of my hand and just so many other ridiculous things. I was embarrassed. The interview is funny now, but I was mad for a very long time. Actually, I'm still pretty mad about it and that's what makes it all so funny to me. Catch episodes of Eating With Sis! Porter Ike

M

eet entrepreneur Ebony Porter-Ike who shares in this interview the importance of businesses being flexible post Coronavirus to survive and how people can find their purpose of living the life designed for them. Q: How are you and your family doing during the Coronavirus quarantine?

Happiness, and Fulfillment. Coinology® helps one to do just that! Meeting people all over the world who wanted to work with me, but didn’t have the time or the capital to do so forced me to create the book series, the Coinology® University and the One on One VIP sessions. Q: You also own the successful PR Conglomerate, The epiMediaGroup, LLC. What services do you provide, and how are you managing day to day operations during this time?

We are making it. It is a blessing that everyone is safe and virus free. We miss our previous lives, but we are also aware that we are blessed during this quarantine. Many families are suffering during this time: Physical- We provide Public Relations, Media Relations, Marly, Mentally, and Financially. keting, Event Logistics, Social Media Marketing & Crisis Management. It is basically derived from courageous people and brands. come up with strategies that will assist clients with obtaining their end goal with the new parameters in place. It’s important that we push our clients outside of their comfort zone if they want to survive in this new era. Not shifting or refusing to pivot during this time will be detrimental to any entrepreneur. For instance, many clients did not want to use Social Media to push and brand their businesses. Now they see during the Quarantine that social media engagement is a huge plus when marketing and making money for your products and services during this time. Not embracing technology and making your business as virtual as possible will be the #1 downfall in this new world. Q: You have written two best selling business books entitled: Coinology Series 1: Authentically You and Coinology Series 2: Intentionally Winning. Why should readers pick up a copy of the book series? If you are trying to figure out WHAT’S NEXT and how to get there, you should pick up these books. We unravel the onion in these books. We make you look at your true self and understand why certain decisions are made. Most of your decisions are based on your childhood perceptions of yourself. That comes through in our adulthood and haunt us from our greatness. Once you are aware of your hang-ups, it’s your job to do the work to fix and develop yourself. This is what Coinology does. We mix business intelligence with sociology to develop the best YOU there is. Q: What plans do you have in place should your business become impacted by the Coronavirus pandemic? All businesses will be impacted by the Coronavirus. Either positively or negatively. I am planning on offering more virtual services, looking at developing more courses, and developing virtual conferences. It’s important to be nimble, and flexible or you will become extinct as a company. I am also continuously looking for opportunities to increase my income streams. I’m always looking for products or services that can solve the problems of society as we transform into a new world. My favorite quote is “Solve a Problem and Become a Millionaire.” Q: How is your company helping business owners that are struggling to survive or forced to close temporarily? ACTION PLAN. I recently participated in the Don’t Rush Challenge. I had my daughter to help me by producing the video and, to see how our generations clashed was HILARIOUS. Q: What will you do first once the stay at home order is over? Head to my office and begin reaching out to all of the folks I had started having conversations with before the Quarantine. It will be GO TIME and time to plan and strategize success in the new world. Q: Any new projects you are working on that you can discuss?

I’m planning a major Christian Masterclass Movement and I’m working on my new book, Coinology Vol 3: The Rise of The Phoenix. We are also planning the 2020 epiConference. So, there are lots of fun and exciting things in the works.

G

Garcelle Beauvais doesn’t like to be considered the first black woman to appear on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills (RHOBH). The Haitian-American actress says it is because we are in every zip code. True given that Beauvais has enjoyed a long career in the entertainment industry that began as a fashion model. Best known for her role as Francesca “Fancy” Monroe on the television sitcom The Jamie Foxx Show, she was also on primetime as Valerie Haywood on the ABC crime drama, NYPD. This particular afternoon the mother of 12-year-old twin boys (Beauvais also has an adult son who recently became a dad) is relaxing at home because of the quarantine. The star shares she doesn’t mind the extra time indoors cooking and watching her preteens play video games. She is pleased she and her ex-husband, Mike Nilon, co-parent amicably, especially at times when family togetherness means everything. “He has one week. I have the other. It works out well.”

“I DON’T CARE HOW BORED YOU GET, DON’T TEXT YOUR EX.”

The star admits she is single these days. Beauvais recently dated screenwriter, Michael Elliot, but announced on Instagram that the relationship ended in February. What are your thoughts now on love? “I am looking for my person, and I think being in quarantine, makes you reflect on your life and you can decide exactly what you’re looking for and what you want in a mate, and that’s what I’ve been able to do which is really great.” She adds, “I wouldn’t mind getting married again if it is the right person.” In the meantime, Beauvais has plenty to keep her busy with being a part of the Housewives franchise. Something she has not done before but

21 1

welcomes the change of pace in her career. “I’ve been a fan of the show for years and friends with some of the ladies. It was definitely a decision that I had to talk with my family and my kids about to make sure they would be OK with it.” For fans that may question her reasons to do scripted television in contrast to the other body of work she has done, Beauvais reassures them that she plans to bring nothing but her “fun sassy confidence” or what she calls, “my black girl magic.” And don’t worry, she is not straying too far from her acting roots. There is her upcoming role in “Coming 2 America.” The sequel slated for a December release picks up some 30-years later with original stars Eddie Murphy and Arsenio hall and some old and new cast. Beauvais laughs when she recalls during filming she had to go for a fitting with Ruther Carter

(famed costume designer) and decided to go to the set to see which scene they were shooting. “I was standing at the Craft Service Table, and I heard, “Is that Garcelle Beauvais and I turned around and it was Eddie Murphy. We gave each other the biggest hug, and it was like time stood still.” If you can recall, Beauvais played a rose petal priestess in the 1988 film. And though it is not known what role she has in the much-anticipated movie, anything with Murphy is sure to be entertaining. “Unwanted Face Time calls are the same as if someone showed up to your house unannounced,” Beauvais says when our conversation shifted back to the quarantine. AND… “If I see another Tik Tok video, I am going to scream,” she voices in laughter. But in all seriousness, Beauvais loves Zoom calls with her family and girlfriends. She, like others, does not know what the future holds, and it brings her comfort to stay connected through technology. However, she does maintain a balance of quiet time where she is not on her phone or social media and enjoys just being still. Beauvais then shared a funny thing that happened while she practiced social distancing. She dressed as a Ninja while out at the supermarket. “I’m so wrapped up, and I definitely make sure that other people are keeping their 6-feet away." She continued, "You know, I always keep it real, there are days that I’m positive, and I feel good, and there are days that it’s hard when I’m alone at the house because the kids are at their dad’s.” It helps that Beauvais uses the time to stay in touch with her wellbeing. “I go on a lot of walks and mediate. I catch up on TV shows and movies.” We asked Beauvais if she would be a part of The Jamie Foxx Show if it ever came back to television? I would in a heartbeat. But it is Foxx who is sitting on that idea, Lol. Beauvais says she also creates a task to put things like laundry near the stairs, so she has a reason to go get them. It is a simple exercise that helps her to stretch and remain active. On the creative side, she and her producing partner are working on a movie they wrote, and at the time this interview took place, the actress and author celebrated the 5th anniversary of her book series I AM. The re-release took place last month. The platform is for kids to have something positive to read when at home with their families at this challenging time. And I AM addresses identity issues many kids face today. It is this level of positivity that carries over to her social media. Just recently, she captioned a post that read, ‘Joy is the best makeup.’ We asked how does she live this daily? Her response: “The first thing I do when I open my eyes is to say thank you, I try and look at the things I’m grateful for from my family being healthy to something as simple as seeing a flower bloom. I think sometimes we miss the little things.” With the world living in chaotic times, we appreciate Beauvais' sense of humor when she says, "Next time I'm quarantined, I'd like it to be with a chef and masseuse and a housekeeper. We get it, Beauvais, but oh, let there not be a next time. But not even that tops her straight to the point advice for men and women twiddling their thumbs at home, and that is… “I don’t care how bored you get, don’t text your ex.” Yes, spoken like a true woman and RHOBH star who knows some chapters should remain closed even in isolation.

SAVANNAH KENNICK By La Trisha M. and La Tasha T. (Twins of Media) Photography by Henry Wu

Savannah Kennick is an actress and model seen in such high fashion publications like Italian Vogue. In this short and fun interview, she talks quarantine fashion advice and a memorable television role. Q: How are you and family doing during the Coronavirus quarantine? We are hanging in there! I’ve had lots of time to cuddle my pups and catch up on reality tv. With my mother being a healthcare worker, I am counting my blessing every day to have my family healthy and safe. Q: You have always enjoyed the fashion culture, so what is your at-home fashion choice during this time? Also, do you have any quarantine fashion advice? I’m not really a sweats kind of girl so this has been an interesting time for me. I’ve been living in biker shorts and band tees so I cannot wait for the day I can put on a baby doll dress and some lipstick and go out again! My best advice, comfort is key.

Q: Your television roles include playing the recurring character of Young Lindsay on “Arrested Development” alongside Jason Bateman (“Bad Words”), Portia de Rossi (“Cursed”), Will Arnett (“The Lego Movie”), and Michael Cera (“Superbad”). Name three things you learned while working with these particular projects? Working on “Arrested Development” taught me so much! It was the first television set I worked on. I had to learn how to prepare and be able to switch things up at the drop of a hat. Also, playing such a well-established and iconic character like Lindsay Bluth was a challenge. I had to absorb all of Portia’s wonderful work over the years but still make it my own. But, the most challenging thing for me was learning how to become a morning person, my call times were 6:30-7 am (depending on the day), and I do not like to be awake before the sun! Q: Are you currently working on any new projects you can discuss? My film DO NOT REPLY will be coming out soon!

The songstress uses her hypnotic voice to guide listeners through those days when you need to be reminded you’re a badass and that no one can make you feel like you don’t deserve the best, both in life and in relationships. “Replace You” was written in December 2019 during an argument Dare was having with an ex-boyfriend revealing “I came into the studio the next morning with Michelle Buzz (Dare’s co-writer and producer) and told her ‘this kid is 26 | MAGAZINE BSMANDMEDIA.COM MAY-JUNE 2020 | BSMANDMEDIA.COM 26 | BSM

acting like he isn’t replaceable, I’ll show him,’ and that’s the start of how we wrote ‘Replace You.’” “The single is about coming to grips with the fact that you’re in charge and never forgetting where you stand in your life. The song talks about all the possibilities life, or a relationship, can throw at you and choosing to show your worth, independence and most confident self.” The sultry, empowering single was co-written by Dare and musician Michelle Buzz, who also produced the song, in the laid back environment of Buzz’s Los Angeles home studio. “Michelle Buzz has been by my side throughout this journey of me finding my new sound, and has helped me evolve emotionally into who I

am today. Without her, so much of my music would not be where it is today,” Dare says of her relationship with Buzz. As one of the brightest young voices in both the musical and digital influencer space, Halston Dare is known for her Cover Monday Instagram series. Her talent was immediately noticed, leading to Dare opening for Danity Kane in summer of 2019 and the release of her previous singles “Something Special” and “Drowned Love.” Connect with Halston: Instagram | TikTok | Facebook | Spotify | Youtube Article by Dead Horse Branding Photography by Shaider Divina

JONATHAN MCREY Grammy-Nominated Jonathan McReynolds Delivers Songs to Set “People” Free During Lockdown With New Audio & Visual EP People

30 | MAGAZINE BSMANDMEDIA.COM MAY-JUNE 2020 | BSMANDMEDIA.COM 30 | BSM

YNOLDS Entertainment One celebrates the release of GRAMMY-nominated, multi-Stellar Award winner, author and philanthropist Jonathan McReynolds’ latest effort, PEOPLE. PEOPLE doubles as a full-length visual album - the first for the genre of gospel music. PEOPLE boast incredible collaborations with Mali Music, The Walls Group and Pastor Mike Todd and is available now wherever music is sold and streamed at all major digital outlets. McReynolds’ new EP offers an unconventional approach for God’s people to strive to live a better life. The album’s central theme is to focus on God’s promise and one’s own self-control in order to live eternal life. Proof of this can be found on the EP’s second single “Movin’ On” with Mali Music (RCA Inspiration) in which the two sing, “I am forgetting what’s behind me, I have decided I’ll be moving on.” PEOPLE also includes fan favorites “Grace” and “He Knows“. On “He Knows” he reminds the listener “there is nothing that we can hide from God,” On “Grace” he pens, “I needed your grace more than I thought I ever would.” The track urges listeners to lean on God to deliver us from the self-righteous people that surround us. “This EP is more proof of God’s sovereignty. He gave me songs for our predicament before we could ever imagine such craziness. This is a collection of songs that are way too relevant - a soundtrack for getting free during lockdown,” shares McReynolds. Jonathan has released three full length studio albums and one EP. His last full-length album Make Room debuted #1 on Billboard Gospel and garnered a historic 1.3 million streams in the first week, while the EP also birthed McReynolds first #1 single, “Not Lucky, I’m Loved.” Jonathan holds a master’s degree in Theology from Moody Theological Seminary and is currently an adjunct member of the Columbia College faculty. He is also the founder of Elihu Nation, a nonprofit organization that promotes wisdom and recently awarded $30k in scholarships. He was recently named a new member of Mensa, an international high IQ society, as well.

As an author, McReynolds’ first book, Make Room: Finding Where Faith Fits, draws on testimonies in scripture and from personal experiences to invite readers to make room for God in every area of life. McReynolds emphasizes that readers make room for God in public and private, mentally and spiritually in order to experience the fullness that can come only through an authentic relationship with God. Make Room: Finding Where Faith Fits is available now on Amazon.com. Jonathan McReynolds’ manager, Walter Thomas (A22 Entertainment) shares, “Our message with Jonathan has always been to help people experience Gospel music in a different way. This has probably been one of the most different projects we’ve had and one of the most rewarding. PEOPLE is a record that shares Gospel music but can reach people wherever they are. We began the year knowing we would have to approach music differently and even our delivery to consumers. I’m glad to see that it’s translating well and given us the opportunity to connect with people universally and in unorthodox ways.” Omega George, Director of Marketing, Label Relations and Strategic Partnerships for Entertainment One shares “Jonathan McReynolds has to be one of the most profound sonic narrators of our time. His creativity transcends ethnicities and impacts cultures abroad. During this time of uncertainty, crisis and social distress; it is with great honor that we present this phenomenal body of work to the world. We all need hope and comfort during this time. I believe that his message through each song will provide us all with just that, hope.” Jonathan McReynolds’ new EP PEOPLE is available now wherever music is sold and streamed at all major digital outlets. Diana Ennen Business Opportunities Available During a Pandemic– Virtual Assistants in Great Demand

W

ith the unemployment rate skyrocketing, social distancing the new norm, so many not working and financial security at an all-time high, desperation is stepping in and many are looking for ways to make money working at home. Even those who felt they had secure stable jobs are suddenly jobless. But there are good opportunities during this time including one business that should be considered not only for a temporary fix, but also long-term success, a virtual assistant business. Virtual Assistants have been around since way before the turn of the century and today are recognized as great businesses gaining in popularity every year. Virtual Assistants (VAs) provide administrative support and specialized services to businesses, entrepreneurs, executives, speakers and coaches, and others. Examples of services a VA can do include administrative tasks, PR and Marketing, book marketing, meeting and event planning (focusing now on online events), social media support, bookkeeping, web design, video creations, business start-up consultations, and most importantly now figuring out all things virtual and how to remain connected with not only your employees, but your customers as well. And with today’s pandemic, they are even more valuable than ever with their ability to provide off-site support to businesses that need them most as all work can be done virtually. 32 | MAGAZINE BSMANDMEDIA.COM MAY-JUNE 2020 | BSMANDMEDIA.COM 32 | BSM

Businesses are going to have to figure out the new normal (hate that term!) and being in the office or wherever they work (at least for a while), might not be in the cards. The good news (and we need that today) is that a virtual assistant will be able to not only do the work, but probably do it better than it had been done previously. For businesses now being able to still connect with their clients and continue to keep their brand positive is essential. And a virtual assistant will be able to do all that and more. What is required to be a virtual assistant? Well it seems so simplistic but mainly a computer, good internet, and the right skills. Now this isn’t to say that anyone with a computer can become a virtual assistant. Nothing can be further from the truth. You absolutely have to be skilled at the services you hope to provide. But with so many opportunities available today, many already possess the needed skills. Consider what you did at your job and think about how that can apply to what businesses need today. Say you processed orders for a company or were the one who helped with email or document creations. Companies today still need to do that and also when things open back up. Perhaps you were in charge of helping your boss create PowerPoint presentations or videos. Yes, here again, virtual

assistants thrive doing these. What about those who worked for realtors and helped with marketing, scheduling showings, processing paperwork, or even doing virtual online tours? You guessed it! A virtual assistant would absolutely be able to do that. Small businesses and other entrepreneurs today are especially in need of help. They need assistance with marketing and figuring out how to still market today being mindful that it’s not like it has been done previously. Compassion, understanding, and really providing help is what needs to happen. We’ve all gotten those emails. They start out talking about how bad things are and how sorry they are that it’s happening. And then they go right into a sales

pitch. Those just are sole crushing and usually get an immediate delete. But marketing still does need to be done today and when done right it feels beneficial and helpful. One other consideration is that currently there are millions of virtual assistants who are already open and running successfully. Businesses can easily find them and get the support they need. And many virtual assistants hire subcontractors to help with their business. The bottom line is there are great opportunities to still make money today working from home.

There is no denying that these times are hard, harder than most of us have seen or will see in our lifetime, but there is hope. And that my friend, is what gets us by each day. We will get through this together. And hopefully this helps someone who needs it now. “Make cooking and eating fun; be creative with recipes”

34 | MAGAZINE BSMANDMEDIA.COM MAY-JUNE 2020 | BSMANDMEDIA.COM 34 | BSM

AGATHA ACHINDU

Agatha Achindu is a wellness, entrepreneur, speaker, and educator who specializes in helping families thrive, by transforming the way they live and feed their children. A Certified Integrative Nutrition Coach and yoga instructor and founder of Yummy Spoonfuls, she discusses how she is helping people stay healthy during the global pandemic. Q: Tell us about your self-titled Agatha Achindu Moms Group on Facebook? This group, in my heart, is ‘my coming back to me’ group. Here is a little background. When I moved to the US in the early 90s, the first thing that caught my eyes outside of the beautiful cars and houses was how lethargic people looked. I didn’t see the vibrancy and vitality I was used to, then, I went to the grocery store and was completely shocked because there was very little fresh food. For the first time in my life, I saw cooked sweet corn in a can with a two-year shelf life. I couldn’t bring myself to eat such food. In all my frustration, I started helping friends tweak their recipes, bake instead of fry, less cheese, cook rather than takeout, etc. Before I knew it, I was the go-to-person for healthy recipes and healthy living tips. Then, I started hosting workshops. That group grew to over 45,000 mothers around the country. In 2006, I founded my first company, and over the last 14 years have spent the majority of my time working on growing the brand. While I continue to share recipes and tips as much as possible, it has been a challenge to respond to the thousands of messages I get on social media from parents, especially mothers asking for help. Some days, I would receive as much as 300 messages just on Instagram. I started because I wanted to help my community, and starting a business was never a part of my plan. All I wanted to do was make a difference in my community by sharing my knowledge and experience. In 2019, my brand finally made it into Walmart; Lord, I give you all the praise. For the first time in a very long time, I had a little extra time on my hands to give back to my community, so

I created the Agatha Achindu Moms Group as a safe space where moms can all come, ask questions, share, learn about all things related to wellness issues without the fear of being judged. Q: How important is it for families to prepare healthier meals while quarantined? Here is the truth, until there is a cure or vaccine for the Covid-19, we have to fully rely on our immune system to help in protecting us. Yep! We have a ferocious virus that has already taken the lives of over 42,000 Americans and counting. We are now fully responsible for our lives and those of our family members. While some of the best ways to boost our immune system include regular exercising, reducing stress, taking vitamins (not the synthetic ones), washing our hands frequently, better quality sleep, etc., proper nutrition is still the most important. Eating nutritious foods is paramount now more than ever. I tell my clients to eat and feed their families as their lives depend on it because it truly does. Q: What is a commonly asked question within your women’s group? How do I get my family to eat more healthful foods? Q: Healthier meals are more expensive than processed foods. What are some ways a household can make sure they are eating well, even on a tight budget? It is no secret that income is a barrier when it comes to eating healthy, but here is what I know from personal experience. If you | BSMANDMEDIA.COM | BSM MAGAZINE | 35 MAY/JUNE MAGAZINE 2020 MAY-JUNEBSM 2020 BSMANDMEDIA.COM | 35

can find the time, cooking at home is by far the most effective way to eat healthier on the smallest budget. Back in the day, I have had to choose between fueling my car or walking 12 miles to and from the grocery store and then use the fuel money for groceries. Here is the truth, even if eating healthy was more expensive (which it doesn’t have to be), it would still be worth it down the line. This is because poor health as a result of poor eating comes with medical costs, drugs, and even reduced work capacity. Here are a few tips •

Buy generic brands within the stores

Buy in-season or frozen fruits and vegetables

Buy foods that you eat a lot in bulk (beans, legumes, brown rice, oat, millet, quinoa, etc.)

Make a meal plan and shop only items on that plan

Cook in large batches (saves both time and money)

Buy whole foods

Stop spending money on junk

Buy fewer meats – replace meats with other less expensive proteins like legumes, chai seeds, canned tuna, etc. Stock your pantry with healthy options when on sale

Pack lunches (for work/school)

Don’t spend money on sugary drinks and save money on empty calories

Start a little garden if possible

36 | MAGAZINE BSMANDMEDIA.COM MAY-JUNE 2020 | BSMANDMEDIA.COM 36 | BSM

Don’t get tricked by coupons to get the unhealthy food home, use them wisely

On the occasional time, you buy meats, get the cheaper cuts.

Q: Name an easy recipe most anyone can prepare on the spot? I say pasta Q: Have you ever had a meal fail, and what was it? Yes, almond flour biscuit Q: Advice for parents who are trying to come up with healthy meal choices for kids who are over being cooped up in the house? Make cooking and eating fun; be creative with recipes; try new recipes; look for age-appropriate kitchen tasks for everyone. Kids take pride in helping out in the kitchen. Don’t emphasize healthy eating, which to some kids equals boring. Talk tasty – let’s add basil, garlic, ginger, a little finely sliced spinach for that St. Patrick’s green glow. All children care about is that food is delicious. As an adult, we know that so much of their health and wellness depends on the food they eat. This is the time to make your own bread; you will be amazed at how easy and delicious it is. The fact that it is super healthy is the bonus. Homemade bread typically uses 3-5 ingredients (flour, yeast, salt, honey, and water), compared to the 15-30 ingredients on storebought bread. Most importantly, remember children are only as good as the options available to them; don’t bring home junky pro-inflammatory snacks that have them eating every hour. Follow @agathaachindu

T

he WNBA honored Giana “Gigi” Byrant, Alyssa Altobelli, and Payton Chester, March 17, as honorary drafts picks for the WNBA. The news was a welcome announcement to the family members of the three young basketball athletes who lost their lives in a helicopter crash on January 26, which also claimed Lakers legend, Kobe Bryant, and five other passengers. Among them were the parents of Altobelli, the mother of Chester, the team coach, and the pilot. Cathy Engelbert, the League Commissioner, of the WNBA began the 2020 draft with a tribute to their legacy. “These athletes represented the future of the WNBA. Players who were following their passions, acquiring knowledge of the game, exhibiting skills that were way beyond their years,” Engelbert said. “They represented the next generation of stars in our league, maybe what might have been called the Mambacita generation.” The WNBA pays tribute to the lives of Alyssa Altobelli, Gianna Bryant and Payton Chester by selecting them as honorary draftees in the #WNBADraft 2020.

The families of the teammates thanked the commissioner and the WNBA for honoring their loved ones. Siblings of Altobelli, the father of Chester, and mother of Bryant, and wife of Kobe, Vanessa posted videos to her Instagram included in Engelbert’s tribute to the girls. It was an emotional moment for all. “It would have been a dream come true for her,” Gianna’s mother, Vanessa, said. “Kobe and Gigi loved the WNBA. Thank you. I want to congratulate all of this year’s draft picks. Congratulations. Work hard. Never settle. Use that Mamba Mentality.” Engelbert also mentioned the first ever Kobe & Gigi Bryant WNBA Advocacy Award. It recognizes “an individual or group who has made significant contributions to the visibility, perception and advancement of women’s and girls’ basketball at all levels.” “Kobe was an incredible champion of women’s basketball and Gianna shared his passion and dedication to our game,” Engelbert said in a statement. “The Kobe & Gigi Bryant WNBA Advocacy Award will honor their legacy and reflect Kobe’s commitment to mentoring the next generation of players, promoting the game and giving back to the community.” The presentation of the inaugural award will take place at the 2021 NBA All-Star Game by the WNBA and Bryant family. Vanessa Bryant will be instrumental in assisting who the recipients are every year at All-Star Weekend. Gianna Bryant made it known she wanted to be like her dad and play professional basketball. The father and daughter duo loved to attend games and support the players both on the college and WNBA levels. Bryant had her sights set on attending the University of Connecticut (UConn), and Altobelli and Chester had dreams of playing college ball as well. Altobelli, in particular, hoped to play for Oregon, where three of its players were recently drafted in the first round, including Sabrina Ionescu, who was the No. 1 overall pick for the New York Liberty. A family friend of the Bryant family, Ionescu applauded the WNBA for honoring what would have been undoubtedly a talented trio coming out of the class of 2024. “I think it was a very beautiful thing that the WNBA did to be able to draft those three girls,” Ionescu said. “They deserved it. I know they’re looking down and smiling and really excited.”

The TV & Film

Renaissance Man

John Marshall Jones Critically acclaimed TV and film renaissance man John Marshall Jones, best known as the loving father from the 90’s hit comedy show “Smart Guy,” makes a dynamic return to television opposite Josh Hartnett and Bridget Regan in Parmount Network/Spectrum Originals’ highly anticipated new drama series “Paradise Lost.”

Q: How are you and your family doing during the Coronavirus quarantine? We’re doing fine and staying close to home. In a way, it’s given us a chance to reconnect emotionally. Everyone was so busy that we were getting out of touch. Thankfully, everyone is healthy.

Q: When did you discover your passion for acting? When I was at Northwestern University, I was about to drop out of school when another student asked me to audition for “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown!” It was the most fun I’d ever had. I booked the role of “Schroeder” and never looked back.

Q: You starred in “The Morning Show” opposite Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, and Steve Carell. What was it like working with the other actors? Most of my work was with Reese Witherspoon, who was amazing. We see her as a star, but she’s also a mom. Very down to earth. We talked a lot about our families and our hopes for them. Then the lights came on, and we got after it! It was a lot of fun.

Q: Among the many roles you’ve played, which one have you identified with the most? I loved the role of Floyd Henderson on “Smart Guy”. It made it cool for a whole generation of young black men to be smart. I meet them every day because they are adults now. It truly had an impact.

44 | BSM MAGAZINE | BSMANDMEDIA.COM

Q: What has been the most rewarding moment in your career? It was winning the Audelco Award for Best Actor. The Audelco is the “Black Tony Awards” in New York, the pinnacle of American theater. Denzel Washington has an Audelco. Morgan Freeman has an Audelco. So I’m in pretty good company.

Q: What has been the most challenging role you had to prepare for? The role of Terrance Haggard in the multiple award-winning play, “The Guest at Central Park West.”

“ I loved the role of Floyd Henderson on “Smart Guy”. It made it cool for a whole generation of young black men to be smart.”

Q: How does your theatre experience influence your career? I LOVE theater. It’s so pure. The discovery process is something you do as a team, and when you find it, the truth of the scene, there’s no other feeling like it.

Q: Without giving too much away, what projects can we expect to see from you soon? Well, right now, I’m starring on “Paradise Lost” (Spectrum), “50 States of Fright” (Quibi), and “For All Mankind” (season 2) on APPLE TV+

Q: What inspired you to create Kappa League TV? Kappa League is the official national service project of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. It is the oldest and most successful African American male mentorship program in U.S. history. I started Kappa League TV to let the world know that we are here and moving forward with providing mentorship opportunities for young men all across the world.

KAYLA YBANEZ How CEO Kayla Ybanez is Helping Entrepreneurs During Covid-19 Kayla is a business strategist for network marketers and online coaches/service providers who want to build a sustainable and scalable personal brand online. Ybanez built her business from her daughter’s hospital room. The place where her daughter fought for her life and where she and her family lived for 436 days straight waiting for answers for her medical mystery diagnosis and watching her daughter undergo a bone marrow transplant in January 2019. Q: How are you and your family? We are doing well! We have developed a routine that works for the kids’ school work. I balance doing so with my projects and my husband’s job that he is working from home. We have found that balancing a routine with regular activities breaks up the feeling of “Groundhog Day” every day. It has helped! Q: How is your daughter today, and where did you gain the strength to start a business during one of the most difficult times of your life? She is doing so well, medically! We are very grateful for her miraculous recovery and for the continuous care provided by her medical team to keep her well. When it was clear that her hospitalization was going to be a long

haul and that we had no idea when there would be a light at the end of the tunnel, I knew I had an opportunity to make something of the time we spent waiting. I didn’t want everything our daughter went through and what we went through to be in vain. I wanted something life-changing to come out of the other side. I also knew this opportunity was presented to me for a reason because I spent too long playing the victim of circumstances in my life, and knew our financial wellbeing was something where I did not have full control. Q: How did you turn your passion into a $300k a year business? While sharing my daughter’s journey on Instagram, I started to study and learn all I could about the platform because I wanted her story to reach far and wide while we were looking for answers for her mystery disorder. After a while, people started asking me how I was doing certain things on Instagram, and it made me realize that I had a knack for it and was naturally good at creating content and storytelling. I realized the skills I had were something people were paying for! I started to offer one-on-one

consultations, which turned into group programs and courses to be able to teach business owners the specifics of what I was able to do. I created my own system of teaching business owners how to use Instagram to make sales authentically. Q: You have said that Millennials aren’t the only ones leveraging Instagram to make money during COVID-19. How are you helping non-Millennials to leverage their business? Generation X and Boomers are moving from Facebook onto Instagram. Partially from curiosity, but they are also looking to escape the doom and gloom that often populates the feed on Facebook. As a result, I am helping business owners from these generations target their counterparts on the platform using curated content and hashtags to build genuine relationships with their prospective customers. Q: How does your company help business owners grow their Instagram without spending money, and what are your tips on how to make an income? Especially right now, content that entertains and educates is performing very well! If you create content that someone is likely to save to look at later or send to their friends, this tells Instagram that

your content should be sent to more people on the platform, and you are likely to perform better in your hashtags and land on the Explore page. A solid hashtag strategy helps you get in front of more people organically without having to spend money on ads. It’s important to use hashtags that your ideal customer is likely to be 1) using in their own posts or 2) are likely to be looking up (like using Instagram as a search engine). I also recommend using hashtags with under 200,000 photos in them to increase the likelihood of someone seeing your content. If a hashtag is too popular, content is buried within minutes. Q: What are your tips for starting an online business through social media during and post quarantine? When starting a business during this time, it is important to pay attention to people’s priorities, what is important, and how much they are paying for it?

These are things that are drastically differ-ent in a lot of cases than they were prequarantine. When you position your product or service, make sure you’re show-ing how it solves a problem or fits a need that they have right now. People are online and are ready to spend money, but it has to be on something they deem important for their life in this current climate. Q: Why is now not the time to put your business venture on hold? Leaders are emerging on the other side of this pandemic. Your audi-ence will remember who was there for them during this time with en-tertaining and relevant informa-tion. They will know who enter-tained and distracted them from the bad news, and who provided a product/service that fits a need that they have. This is also a time when people are slowing down and taking the time to consume con-

tent in ways they never have before. Now is the best time to develop and introduce something to the market because people are much more likely to see it. Q: How are you and your family staying active during this time? With the weather changing in Chi-cago, we can go outside and go for walks together. We recently moved into a home with a big backyard, and we can run around with the kids. I also invested in a Peloton, which has been a great change of pace to break up the days of social distancing. Dove puts medical workers front and center in the ad “Courage Is Beautiful” Dove’s “Courage is Beautiful” ad showcases the healthcare hero’s hard work in an inspiring video with some pretty emotional photos. The 30-second ad titled “Courage is Beautiful” shows images of doctors and nurses in their protective goggles and masks, placed on their necks and heads. You’ll notice that in each photo of the healthcare professionals, they have painful, indented marks on their face from the protective gear they are required to wear hours on end assisting patients. This ad by the famous “body-positive Real Beauty campaign” brand, brings a new meaning to what beauty and courage look like. Doctors across the country are sharing their battle scars to show other doctors that they are not alone in this fight to keep patients alive. Italian nurse, Nicola Sgarbi brought attention to this painful side effect of working on the front-line last month when he had to work 13 hours in the ICU. In his Facebook post, he wrote, “I don’t love selfies. Yesterday, though, I took this photo. After 13 hours in the ICU after taking off all my protective devices. I don’t feel like a hero … I am a normal person, who loves his job and who, now more than ever, is proud and proud to do it by giving

all himself on the forefront lines together with other wonderful people (doctors, nurses, oss, technicians, cleaners).” In addition to honoring the health care heroes, the personal care brand promotes the importance of washing your hands in a 20-second countdown ad with the message, “We don’t care which soap you use; we care that you care. For you. And for all.” Dove partnered with Vaseline to donate 2 million dollars to the nonprofit Direct Relief providing medicine and ventilators for the healthcare heroes on the front-line. Also, the owner of Dove, Unilever, donated 108 million dollars to help with the COVID-19 relief. In a time where we don’t know what will happen next, we are glad to know that healthcare professionals are showing up to work in their heroic capes ready to help us fight this virus.
