Where did re-thinking golf come from? Re-Thinking Golf came about from asking the question: How can we grow the game of golf? After a lot of research into the game of golf; from the history, the rules, and where the game is currently today, I came to the conclusion that we just have to Re-Think the game in order for it to sustain long into the future. It is not just one single thing that is wrong with the game of golf but rather a culture as a whole. If you want to learn more about my research into golf, it can be found in the book “How can we grow the game of golf?”

What is re-thinking golf? Re-Thinking Golf is looking at golf and trying to find ways to break and bend all the rules to find new and interesting ways to excite and entice a younger audience. We do not want to get rid of golf completely but re-think it and re-tool it for the current day and into the future. I wanted to find unique ways to play and learn the game that still kept the heart and sole of the game in-tacked. There is a wide range of things covered in this book and there can be many more areas that could be covered. But the ones I touched upon were in my eyes the most key points in order to growing the game of golf.

Why do we need to re-think golf? Golf is struggling to grow currently and is having a hard time reaching a younger audience. We need to change that by looking at ways to grow a wider and younger audience. If this does not happen, the future of golf may be very bleak. Golf is viewed as an “elitist” game and it tends to push many people away from it. I want to change that and bring a whole new vibe to the game, so that more people will want to play and learn about golf.

Who is the target audience? Re-Thinking Golf is mainly looking at a younger audience, more specifically the ages of 8 to 18 years old. But at the same time, Re-Thinking Golf looks to just widen the normal audience that plays the game. The reason it is more specifically geared towards that younger audience is because that group of people is what is going to help grow and sustain the game for the long haul. But at the same time I do not want to exclude anyone, because I want the game to be something that anyone can get excited about

Lets go play! 2

What is Teaching in Golf? Teaching in golf is the first touch point when it comes to learning about the game. That initial key points you need to know about before getting out and actually swinging a club. Such as the rules of golf and how to properly set up and swing a club. The other part to teaching golf is getting out to a wider audience, and getting to people that may not have had the opportunity to be taught the game. Teaching is a huge key in order to grow the game of golf, it is what is going to get someone first interested in the game.

Why is Teaching important? It is a key aspect to better understanding on how to play the game and the rules of the game. If someone may be interested in playing the game of golf, having a good understanding of how to play, swing and knowledge of the rules; that can make a big difference in whether they will end up playing or not. And if someone has no previous knowledge of the game or does not have the means to be taught the game, it can help with that problem and grow the game.

What is in the rules book? The rules book, is well the rules of golf. It covers everything from the basics of golf like how you play the game and the basic etiquette of golf, all the way to tedious and odd rules that are mainly used by professionals players only.

Why do you need the rules book? Just like any sport you need a set of guidelines that everyone must follow in order for the game to be fair and effective for everyone. In order to get the most out of playing golf, knowing and understanding the rules (at least the basic rules) is a massively important.

How does this help grow the game of golf?

Rules Book

5

With so many rules for the game of golf, it can become really confusing on what is what really fast. With previous rules books, they are presented in a clustered and hard to read way. This design is made to help people of all ages quickly read and understand the rules. Or easily find a specific rule when playing golf.

18 A Quick Guide to the Rules of Golf

A Quick Guide to the Rules of Golf This guide provides a simple explanation of common Rules situations It is not a substitute for the Rules of Golf, which should be consulted whenever any doubt arises For more information on the points covered, please refer to the relevant Rule.

General Points The game of golf should be played in the correct spirit and in accordance with the Etiquette Section in the Rules of Golf In particular: • Show consideration to other players, • Play at a good pace and be ready to invite faster moving groups to play through, and • Take care of the course by smoothing bunkers, replacing divots and repairing ball marks on the greens Before starting your round you are advised to: • Read the Local Rules on the score card and the notice board • Put an identification mark on your ball; many golfers play the same brand of ball and if you can’t identify your ball, it is considered lost (Rules 12-2 and 27-1) • Count your clubs; you are allowed a maximum of 14 clubs (Rule 4-4) During the round: • Don’t ask for advice from anyone except your caddie, your partner (i e , a player on your side) or your partner’s caddie; don’t give advice to any player except your partner; you may ask for or provide information on the Rules, distances and the position of hazards, the flagstick, etc (Rule 8-1) • Don’t play any practice shots during play of a hole (Rule 7-2)

Stroke Play

Definitions All defined terms are in italics and are listed alphabetically in the Definitions section – see pages 30-45. 3-1. General; Winner A stroke-play competition consists of competitors completing each hole of a stipulated round or rounds and, for each round, returning a score card on which there is a gross score for each hole. Each competitor is playing against every other competitor in the competition. The competitor who plays the stipulated round or rounds in the fewest strokes is the winner. In a handicap competition, the competitor with the lowest net score for the stipulated round or rounds is the winner. 3-2. Failure to Hole Out If a competitor fails to hole out at any hole and does not correct his mistake before he makes a stroke on the next teeing ground or, in the case of the last hole of the round, before he leaves the putting green, he is disqualified. 3-3. Doubt as to Procedure A. Procedure for Competitor In stroke play only, if a competitor is doubtful of his rights or the correct procedure during the play of a hole, he may, without penalty, complete the hole with two balls. To proceed under this Rule, he must decide to play two balls after the doubtful situation has arisen and before taking further action (e g , making a stroke at the original ball). The competitor should announce to his marker or a fellow-competitor: • That he intends to play two balls; and • Which ball he wishes to count if the Rules permit the procedure used for that ball.

7

Rule 3 51

Before returning his score card, the competitor must report the facts of the situation to the Committee. If he fails to do so, he is disqualified. If the competitor has taken further action before deciding to play two balls, he has not proceeded under Rule 3-3 and the score with the original ball counts. The competitor incurs no penalty for playing the second ball. B. Committee Determination of Score for Hole When the competitor has proceeded under this Rule, the Committee will determine his score as follows: (i) If, before taking further action, the competitor has announced which ball he wishes to count and provided the Rules permit the procedure used for the selected ball, the score with that ball counts. If the Rules do not permit the procedure used for the selected ball, the score with the other ball counts provided the Rules permit the procedure used for that ball. (ii) If, before taking further action, the competitor has failed to announce which ball he wishes to count, the score with the original ball counts provided the Rules permit the procedure used for that ball. Otherwise, the score with the other ball counts provided the Rules permit the procedure used for that ball. (iii) If the Rules do not permit the procedures used for both balls, the score with the original ball counts unless the competitor has committed a serious breach with that ball by playing from a wrong place. If the competitor commits a serious breach in the play of one ball, the score with the other ball counts despite the fact that the Rules do not permit the procedure used for that ball. If the competitor commits a serious breach with both balls, he is disqualified. Note 1: “Rules permit the procedure used for a ball means that, after Rule 3-3 is invoked, either: (a) the original ball is played from where it had come to rest and play is permitted from that location, or (b) the Rules permit the procedure adopted for the ball and the ball is put into play in the proper manner and in the correct place as provided in the Rules.

What does the swing breakdown cover? The swing breakdown covers everything from your set up, all the way through your swing. Giving you quick and easy to understand graphics to help you make sure you get the best out of your game. Whether you are just learning how to play the game or need a quick reminder out on the course.

Where can I find this information? You can find these graphics in two places: on the training games and in the Re-Thinking Golf app. The main use of them would be on the training games because that is a key place where someone would be learning how to play the game of golf. But also always having the access to them in the app, is important so you can always remind yourself the proper way to swing.

How does this help grow the game of golf?

Swing Breakdown

9

Currently there is no simple and easy ways to visually see how to go through a proper set up and swing. Having that and having the easy access to them can help grow the game because people can have an easier way to learn how to swing, which makes the golf a much more exciting game to play.

How does the public golf work? The goal of the public golf is to offer golf to anyone and everyone. Just having a single short par 4 hole placed in a public park. No fees, just go out and play. The hole would be made out of turf, to eliminate high maintenance on it.

How do you play without clubs? The idea would to have some type of teaching session once a month, where volunteer coaches would come out with some clubs and golf balls, to give people that may not always have the chance to play, try the game of golf.

How does this help grow the game of golf?

Public Golf

19

Golf is viewed as an elitist sport and does not reach a huge part of community because of that. Having a free and open way to get a taste of the game; this would make it easier to reach a larger community that could make a huge impact on growing the game of golf.

What is Learning in Golf? Learning golf is learning and understanding the fundamentals to golf. Getting out there and actually playing the game and working on how to properly swing and working your way up to different shot types and other little nuances of the game.

Why is Learning important? This is probably the most important part of the game. If you do not learn how to swing and play the game right, you will never be able to fully grasp the game. This also is the most exciting part of golf, where you actually get go out and actually play and learn new things that you probably never knew before.

How does the drive game work? There is a touch screen between the two hitting mats where you can choose to go through the different swing breakdown screens. You then hit golf balls at the various targets in the back. When you make it through a target, the arrows for that target will light up. There is a ball return system, under the game that sends the golf balls back to the holding area in-front of the hitting mats. You can also set the game up to only light up specific targets to aim at.

What can I learn from playing? You can learn how to set up and swing for your drive shot. You can also start to learn how to play different types of drive shots as you get better. This is a fun way to learn one of the key fundamentals of golf.

How does this help grow the game of golf?

Drive

23

Traditionally the way to learn how to drive a golf ball is by going to a driving range or working with a coach. But by bringing something that is new and different, it will draw a younger and wider audience in. You still learn how to drive a golf ball the right way but in a much more fun and exciting way.

How does the chip game work? There is a touch screen between the two hitting mats where you can choose to go through the different swing breakdown screens. You then hit golf balls at the various targets in the back. When you make it through a target, the arrows for that target will light up. There is a ball return system, under the game that sends the golf balls back to the holding area in-front of the hitting mats. How does this help grow the game of golf?

Chip

29

Traditionally the way to learn how to chip a golf ball is by going to a driving range, a chipping green or working with a coach. But by bringing something that is new and different, it will draw a younger and wider audience in. You still learn how to chip a golf ball the right way but in a much more fun and exciting way.

How does the putt game work? There is a touch screen between the two hitting mats where you can choose to go through the different swing breakdown screens. You then hit golf balls at the ramp and then into the various targets across the board. When you make it through a target, the arrows for that target will light up. There is a ball return system, under the game that sends the golf balls back to the holding area next to the hitting mats. You can also set the game up to only light up specific targets to aim at.

What can I learn from playing? You can learn how to set up and swing for your putt. You will also start to learn the different speed swings that you will need when actually playing golf. The key point to putting is learning the subtle motions that go into putting and that is what this game is set up to do in a very different way.

Putt

35

How does this help grow the game of golf? Traditionally the way to learn how to putt by practicing on a putting green or on a putting mat. But by bringing something that is new and different, it will draw a younger and wider audience in. You still learn how to putt properly but in a much more fun and exciting way.

What is Practicing in Golf? Practicing golf is taking what you have learned and applying it to your game. Repetition is key for things to stick and for you to grow as a golfer. Having simple ways to help you as reminders when you are practicing can make a big difference.

Why is Practicing important? If you do not practice your golf game, you cannot grow as a golfer and improve your skills. The more you know and the better you are at playing the game, the more fun the game becomes.

How does the home practice work? The home practice game is a combination of the drive, chip and putt games but without any of the electronics or swing breakdown screens. It is designed where you can practice your driving, chipping and putting at home in a fun and exciting way.

Why use the home practice? Like the drive, chip and putt games it brings a different way to look at how you practice your golf game. Because the target audience is a younger generation, this would be something that they would get excited about and want to go out and practice on.

How does this help grow the game of golf?

Home Practice

55

Traditional ways of practicing at home are not that extincting and are not going to attract a younger audience to wanting to practicing at home. This gives you a whole new way of looking at how you can practice at your home. The other flip side to home practice devices is that the good ones are very expensive. This device tries to bridge that gap of having something fun and exciting to play at home but not completely break the bank.

Putting Targets

60

What makes this different? Having better visuals and targets to judge your distance and your accuracy helps big time. Most driving ranges have random markers or flags that are hard to get a good judge of distance and accuracy. Also having something a little different visually than what is out there also helps.

What can you learn? Use of a driving range is mainly used when warming up before you play a round of golf, and so having a good judge of how you are hitting can make a huge difference when you get out and start playing. This can also help get you dialed in on accuracy before you go out and play.

How does this help grow the game of golf?

Driving Range

61

This not only helps you better warm up or practice but it also brings a different vibe visually to a golf course. The biggest thing with golf is really pushing the bounds visually to bring in a new audience. This driving range design does that while still being a better range than current ones out there.

350 300 250 200 150 100 50

62

What makes this different? Most chipping greens are just a green and sometimes have bunkers around them. This design gives you not only gives you starting points to hit from but also gives you targets around the green to aim at. The targets are designed to give you a quick and easy response to judge at how well you are chipping.

What can you learn? This chipping green gives you more of a target to aim for and will give you a quicker and easer to understand response. Having that quick response, means that you can quickly adjust to what you are doing right and wrong.

How does this help grow the game of golf?

Chipping Green

63

Again this really brings a different look and feel to golf, which is sorely needed in the game. But it also has a more effective way to practice and warm up for chipping.

64

What makes this different? This putting green is designed to help to read and understand the greens for that specific golf course. The hardest thing when putting is understanding the subtle differences in the depth of the green and slopes around the green. This color coats those differences to better give you an idea of where they are.

What can you learn? When warming up for your round, you can get your mind in a better place for seeing the differences through out the green. If you feel confident about reading greens before you go out and play your round of golf, you are most likely going to go out and play better and have a fun time.

Putting Green

65

How does this help grow the game of golf? Putting is arguably the most important part of the golf game. And it is also one of the hardest things to do. Reading a green is always not that easy to understand. Having colors showing you those different changes through out the green, can help you start off your round right. And make you more confident about your golf game.

66

How do the smart clubs work? The smart clubs have sensors in the both the head of the club and also in the shaft. This gives you information about your swing, that gets sent directly to your Re-Thinking Golf app in real time, where you can view the information to better help your game.

Why use the smart clubs? The hardest thing when out playing golf is to understand what you are doing wrong with your swing. But having clubs that can give you a good breakdown on your swing, and how you are hitting the ball can be a huge advantage.

How does this help grow the game of golf?

Smart clubs

67

One of the big problems with golf is that is too hard to play. This helps with that problem, by allowing people a better insight into what they are doing right and wrong and be able to play better and have more fun.

68

How do the smart golf balls work? The smart golf balls work similar and best in conjunction with the smart clubs. They have a microchip in them that will give you real time information about your ball speed, flight path and distance.

Why use Smart golf balls? Again the more information that you can have about every aspect about your swing is beneficial. This helps you get better and be better at adjusting your game when you are out playing. You can never have enough information about your swing while you are out playing golf.

What is Playing in Golf? Playing is actually getting out to the course and playing golf. This is what golf is all about. Getting out in nature and actually playing. Putting everything you have learned to the test. And seeing how well all the practice payed off.

Why is Playing important? Without playing the game, there is no more golf. And that is the ultimate thing we are trying to avoid, the end of golf. You can practice and play the learning games all you want, but without actually going out and playing the game of golf, it cannot grow.

How do these hole markers function? Hole markers are letting you know where on the course you are and the basic layout of the hole. Hole markers also should give you a basic information about the distance from each tee box to the center of the green.

Why use this type of design? Hole markers are mainly used as just a quick reminder where you are, so bringing a different look and feel to them helps to start tie in the golf course with the rest of the designs across the board. We can only push golf so far, unless we really push the designs into the golf course itself.

How does this help grow the game of golf?

Hole Markers

73

The biggest thing is starting to push the look and feel of golf courses and what they could potentially look like to help try and draw in a younger and wider audience. This is just a small and easy thing that can be done to help with that.

Why do these tee boxes look the way they do? Two big things with these tee boxes; they are not only pushing the bounds of what a golf course could look like but also give the player an easier way to know the distance from tee to green.

How does this help improve your golf game? Trying to figure out the exact distance from tee to green is sometimes tricky and there is not always good markers but this helps give you that and very easy way to read and understand that; by having painted distances in the tee box.

How does this help grow the game of golf?

77

Again the biggest thing is starting to push the look and feel of golf courses and what they could potentially look like to help try and draw in a younger and wider audience. This helps not only with telling the player how far the green is but also look and feel around the golf course.

78

79

80

Why use spacial graphics on a golf course? Spacial graphics cannot only help boost the look and feel around the course but also can start to help identify specific points and targets around the course. You can really push the spacial graphics as far as you want. You can also start to think about how you could use spacial graphics to brand courses in different ways (Courses could put their logos or have themed courses if they wanted).

How does this help improve your golf game? What you can get is specific distances to certain targets, where you should be aiming or even highlight targets to aim at or avoid. You can really push these spacial graphics to not only look cool and fun but also give you extra help with your golf game.

83

84

Why these specific designs? These courses really push the bounds of what a golf course could look like. Most golf courses do not really push the bounds of what it looks and feels could be. And with this it is the capstone to the whole Re-Thinking Golf project.

How does this help improve your golf game? These course are also designed with specific ways you should play. Forcing you to think about each shot and how it is going to be played. Most of the holes are also designed to make you choose exact points on the hole to aim at, in order to help improve your golf game.

How does this help grow the game of golf?

Golf Course Design

85

There is nothing like this out there and it could really get more people interested in the game. Golf has been the same for so long now, it really needs a fresh start and re-thinking what a golf course could look like and pushing that to the limit is exactly what the game needs.

Final Thoughts 105

What is next? The next step would be actually putting the ideas of Re-Thinking Golf out to the public. See what happens when we build a golf course in a public park that anyone can use. Making arcade style games that teach you the fundamentals of golf. Golf is an amazing sport and needs to stick around until the end of time. There is noting else like it out there. It really is a unique experience being about to go out and play in nature. But we need to push the bounds of what golf is, in order to make sure the game stays around.

What else can be done? There are so many other things that I did not cover in this book, not because they are not important but I did not think they were the most important points that needed to be covered as far as golf goes. Other things that could be done are creating children’s books that help to try and get kids interested from a very young age. Looking at how we can lower the price of equipment and green fees. Dress codes at golf courses and how we can change that are even get rid of those standards. These are just a few of the many other things that could be looked at in order to Re-Think and grow the game of golf.

What is being done currently? A lot has changed even in the time that I worked on this project. Companies like Nike are pushing the way golf looks to entice a younger audience to go out and play. Younger players on the pga are also helping bring that younger audience into the game of golf. But it will only go so far is there is not a drastic overhaul of the game and the way it is presented. Things are starting to head in the right direction but until there is a complete culture change, golf’s future may be bleak at best. But my goal is to make sure that day never comes!

How can you help grow the game of golf? 106
