Blandford St Mary School enjoys being a part of the local and wider community. As young members of the local community, it is good to see our children venturing further afield, meeting children from other schools and taking responsibility for their behaviour and learning. One of the advantages of being members of the Blandford Schools Network is that we can participate in competitive sport and other activities at local Primary and Secondary schools. We have been busy this month! A big thank you to Teachers and Support Staff for their willingness to participate in these out of school events. Earlier in June, Years 5 and 6 visited the Shaftesbury School for a mixed cricket event. Mrs Thomas was very proud of our children as they persevered with overarm bowling, showing maturity and developing skill. Reaching out beyond our maintained schools network, Year 5 enjoyed a Cricket and Rounders tournament at Claysmore. It was a real treat to experience the extensive grounds there and they loved the lunch, I’m told! Learning how to win and lose gracefully, challenging yourself, supporting your team and others as they give their best, is a life lesson. The reports from the staff accompanying our children is that they have taken the events in their stride and behaved really well. Downlands School hosted an IT event last week designed to enable children to experience a broad range of hardware and new software programs. 8 of our children represented the school and again, Mrs Walton-Smith reported that their behaviour was exemplary and they enjoyed meeting children from other schools, as well as trying out the IT activities. Our Year 4 children had a wonderful experience at Leeson House last week. For some, it was their first time away from home without their families, for all it provided the opportunity to be themselves in a different environment. Mrs Rees, Mrs Green and Mrs Cooper were very pleased with the way the children socialised and encouraged one another. Year 6 have been further afield on the Isle of Wight, with Miss O’Sullivan and Miss Walton, over the weekend and have had a very exciting time. The activities were challenging for many of the children (and staff!) and support and encouragement were key to everyone’s success and enjoyment. Our Summer Fete this Saturday is our chance to open the school grounds to our local community and I hope that it is already in your diary. Please invite your family, friends and neighbours. The day promises to be full of fun and your support would be greatly appreciated. Friends of School are working hard to ensure that there is entertainment, food and activities to suit all ages. Gates will be open at 12. All offers of help to set up on Friday 27th late afternoon/Saturday morning or run stalls for an hour or so, to Trevor Keep please, as there is lots to be done. trevor.keep@hotmail.co.uk I look forward to seeing you there. Best wishes Carol Brown
