Year 3 curriculum letter

Page 1

The children have settled back into the Spring term very well. We have much to do, lots of challenges, new experiences and hopefully plenty of fun along the way. In terms of curriculum, we will continue to make as many creative, cross curricular links as possible. We are working with the new national curriculum for numeracy, which provides lots of opportunity for practical experience as well as developing skills in the all the key areas. We will begin to focus on learning the times tables this term and I ask that you support your children to learn them as part of their home learning. It really is a vital part of their education and a life skill. There are plenty of ways to support them, not just learning by rote. Games can be played to make it fun. I will put activities on the numeracy page on our class blog as well to help. In literacy, we have started the term looking at instruction writing. We will link this with our DT skills and our topic. We will move onto fiction writing. We are currently finishing our Winter Wonderland topic, looking at the science of materials. When this is completed in the next week or so, we will move onto a new topic – Vive Le France. This will give the children an opportunity to have a greater understanding of the country whose language they are learning. As always the children will lead the planning through the questions they ask. In PE we have started with gymnastics, developing balance, coordination and performance. The children will continue to work on their assessment of themselves and their peers through oral contributions. Later in the term we will learn the skills for hockey. Our RE focus this half of term will be on Christianity, with a theme of Jesus’ Miracles. Key questions will be: Could Jesus really heal people? Were these miracles or is there another explanation for them? The children will be encouraged to ask questions, share their thoughts and form their own opinions. If you would like any more information on this or any other areas of school life, then please don’t hesitate to ask. Kind regards

Melissa Thomas, Paige Cooper, Jodie Miller, Debbie Walton-Smith
