Year 3 summer curriculum letter 2014

Underground Base Dear Parents, I really can’t quite believe that we are now into the summer term. Where has the year gone? I’m hoping that the weather will be kind to us and we will have lots of opportunities to take our classroom outside (to be honest, we’ll make the most of every opportunity)! We will be covering three different topics this term, to complete the Somerset skills which underpin our approach to learning. Our first one is ‘Our Wonderful World’, which we begun right at the end of last term. It will have a heavy focus on geography and science, but will also include art and ICT skills too. Immediately after ½ term, we will have our international arts week, but then we will have a Football World Cup topic (slightly indulgent on my part). Finally we will have a ‘party planning’ topic – which I hope will be a big hit! Again, we will be making lots of cross curricular links. In literacy, we have started looking at myths and legends. We have just begun to read some Greek myths and will create our own mythological beasts and heroes, before creating our own stories. We still have a poetry unit to cover and need to look at play scripts too and then we will recover some non- fiction writing. In numeracy we are ploughing ahead with the new curriculum through the Hamilton scheme of work. It has a heavy focus on arithmetic and the children are coping well with the challenges presented to them. PSHE continues with the Rainbow scheme and this term focuses on relationships. RE will return to Hinduism considering and questioning the belief that Brahman is everywhere and in everything.

We will pick up our French again this term to develop a greater range of vocabulary, some basic conversational skills and slook at writing simple sentences. PE will concentrate on athletics to start with and then move onto striking and fielding activities. We will be holding our sports day on the final Friday before we break up for ½ term. In KS2 we use the PE lessons to both teach technique and run heats for certain events. Sports day runs affectively as the finals. However, all children do get the opportunity to participate and we very much encourage them to. Finally I’d just like to thank you all for your support over the year so far. The children have made such good progress, both in terms of maturity and academically. As always, please don’t hesitate to come and see me if you have any concerns about anything. Our door is always open.

Kind regards

Melissa Thomas, Jodie Miller and Debbie Walton-Smith
