Flexible Work at the BSN

Flexible Work

at the BSN

What is Flex Work? Flexible workers play an integral part in the BSN community and contribute to the school’s success. Staff on our ‘Flex Register’ will usually be called for a specific role. These roles are divided into two groups: • Teaching staff - this includes not only teachers but also Teaching Assistants and Learning Support Assistants; • Support staff and non-teaching staff, such as student supervisors, office staff, concierges and exam invigilators. Our schools and offices arrange cover for the different campuses in the instance of staff absence, for example, staff training days or school trips. Naturally, not all cover can be preempted; therefore a level of flexibility is much appreciated when it comes to working days, locations and short notice requests.

Where The BSN has four locations: three Junior Schools based in and around The Hague as well as one Senior School in Voorschoten. There are around 175 staff members on the BSN Flex Register to date. We have various groups of flexible working staff specialised in their own unique field, such as language lessons (BSN Language Centre) and oneto-one music lessons (on all campuses). We have around 2300 students and around 500 fixed contract staff divided over each of the four campuses.

“Never have I come across

so much diversity in my role as a flex worker. There are over 80 different nationalities, yet we all feel a sense of belonging within the school”

Process

What next?

We aim to offer all future staff the same fair recruitment process. Therefore, we ask for all applications to come in through our recruitment portal: bsn.homerun.co. From here, Deputy Headteachers or managers shortlist candidates for a short video interview. For this, we use Sonru. Candidates who have completed a succesful Sonru interview will then be invited for a faceto-face interview and/or test at one of our campuses.

Your first day at the BSN is always exciting, especially if your first time is an unplanned cover. Fortunately, our staff will be aware of this and will therefore do their best to help you feel settled and welcome. In return, we expect a professional attitude in which education of children has a central place. We have a digital Staff Manual on our staff intranet pages where you can find all the information you may need while working for us.

Upon appointment, our Human Resources team takes over, ensuring all the necessary paperwork is in order and then generates a contract. Everyone employed by the BSN receives a contract; as a flexible worker you will receive what is known as a zero hour contract, since cover is on an ‘as and when needed’ basis. New staff are invited to attend an Induction day at one of the campuses three times a year - this invitation is also extended to flexible workers. This is a great opportunity to get acquainted with both the school(s) and your new colleagues.

“The staff at the schools

are very organised and helpful when providing cover work. There is a lovely atmosphere at the schools and you are always made to feel welcome. I love the variety that supply work provides me”

Support, benefits and development The BSN offers support to all staff members and flexible workers are no exception. We have an online IT helpdesk and on-site IT assistant at every campus, a wide range of learning materials teaching staff can use and friendly colleagues who are eager to share best practices with each other. As a flexible worker, you will be entitled to our many benefits, such as: • Reimbursement of gym membership fees (sports clubs); • Grants for training or courses through our Great Programme Fund; • Joining one of our numerous well-being initiatives; • Attending in-house courses; • Continuous Professional Learning (CPL) opportunities through our International Leadership Academy.

Opportunities The BSN encourages staff to sign up to our Job Alerts to stay up to date of any internal vacancies. Each year, a number of our flexible workers are offered a part-time or even fulltime role in one of the schools. There are plenty of opportunities for those who are ambitious!
