Dear Parents is our strength, crucial in maintaining the quality of education and environment we all enjoy.

A casual scan through the school calendar on Gateway gives an idea of this quality in depth across the school. A huge number of activities and events have taken place this term. Our whole school choir’s contribution to the spectacular “Young Voices” concert at the O2 and the recent return of the ski trip are two examples, from many, of colleagues sharing their passion and commitment with our students. Both events were shared with our community very successfully and visibly via Twitter. With the hosting of the ISST Rugby Cup, new all-weather pitches planned, The COBIS games and a burgeoning fixtures calendar for the spring – it’s all go!

During these first two terms as CEO & Principal, I have been working on the vision for the future of the school. Following successful meetings with the Association and Governors, I will be sharing how these plans will further enhance your child’s experience at the BSN. Whether you want to call it late winter or early spring, there are definitely snow drops in my lawn and daffodils on the dog-walk. A year ago I was in the Netherlands on a BSN acquaint with my family.

I was in meetings with Martin Coles and the Board of Management and my wife and sons had a tour of SSV and met key staff. I can’t believe this was a year ago and how much has changed in this time.

It has given me a unique perspective on our community which is also often dealing with transition.

It’s not easy changing country, job and home with a family in one swoop but the BSN is spectacularly good at supporting staff, parents and students in this process; we have very much appreciated this as a family.

David Porritt has just come back from a similar experience in China; he begins his role as Headmaster of Dulwich College Suzhou in August. We should be proud that the BSN’s expertise and capacity leads to colleagues throughout the school taking their next career steps. I’m proud that this can lead to BSN colleagues being promoted from within also. Karren van Zoest came through a highly rigorous recruitment process to become Headteacher designate at JSL. Every successful organisation needs a balance of retaining cultural DNA and bringing in new people and Karren has some powerful plans for the JSL’s ongoing excellence.

Karren’s appointment means that we’ll be looking for a Deputy Headteacher at JSL. Recruiting the right people to roles is probably the most important thing we do and we’re very fortunate to have such a capable HR team with a discrete recruitment officer. This term we will also appoint a new whole school Head of Assessment and a Head of Security (see article later in this edition). Our people and their ongoing development

connected Internationally

Offering students a multitude of opportunities both in and outside the classroom is something on which the BSN prides itself. The school actively encourages students to follow an interest or personal hobby, whether it’s through the BSN’s extensive co-curricular programme, or in their own time away from school. Moreover the significant contribution these activities can make towards a young person’s all-round development, is something that is highly valued and recognised across the BSN.

Feeling at Home Media Crew This term a group of BSN students have been learning and developing an interesting and highly useful array of skillsets within the field of media and communications.

On Sunday 31 January the Feel at Home in The Hague Fair took place at City Hall, during which more than 4,000 visitors attended and over 160 organisations, including the BSN, were exhibiting.

The BSN presence on the day was enhanced significantly by the BSN Media Crew, comprised of

eight Year 12 students. Some of the crew members are currently studying for their IB and the work they were involved in leading up to and during the event, contributed towards the Creativity Activity Service (CAS) section of their course. With cameras and microphones at the ready, our team of budding reporters could be seen throughout the day amongst the hustle and bustle of the fair, interviewing visitors and exhibitors about their experience of the event.

When we get back to school we’ll be writing a news piece as part of our CAS project, in which we’ll reflect on our involvement at the fair”.

Norea and Nicole also explained how they became involved, “we initially found out about the opportunity to work for the Media Crew through our CAS Coordinator Mrs Kirkwood, who introduced us to the event organiser Claire Bishton. There was a list of potential activities on offer and we decided on Media”. Norea explained in more detail about their specific roles and responsibilities, “I’m really interested

in photography so I’ve been taking pictures and Nicole’s more into writing, so she’s been focussed on producing articles and has been interviewing people. We’ve also both been busy tweeting throughout the day and passing our material on for it to be posted live onto the Feel at Home website.”

THIMUN Press Team During the week leading up to the Feel at Home in The Hague Fair, 3,500 students from more than 200 schools and 74 countries descended on World Forum in The Hague for the 48th edition of The Hague International Model United Nations (THIMUN). The majority of the entire

cohort of BSN Year 12 students participated as delegates, with many others performing the very important duties of Administrators.

Two Year 12 students, Laura and Isobel worked in very specific roles as members of the THIMUN Press Team. Demand for these positions was extremely high and both Laura and Isobel were required to submit a motivation letter together with a teachers’ recommendation, outlining exactly why they were interested in the role. Isobel explains further, “I heard about the opportunity from one of my friends who did it last year, by the time I found out there was only one day left to apply, I then mentioned it to Laura and we applied together.” Laura further adds,

“it was quite hectic but we really wanted it and being quite creative, I relished the idea of working in a position that involved photography or art.”

The entire Press Team comprised twenty five students, some of whom had previously worked in the Press Office at other Mini United Nations events across the world, however for most students this was a totally new experience. Laura and Isobel were two of the new starters and were assigned very specific responsibilities, as Laura explains, “in my role as a photographer, I need to take pictures of the delegates enjoying the whole THIMUN experience.

I’m also assigned articles for which I need to capture images each day.

For example one student was writing an article about an NGO who visited THIMUN, so I took photos during the interview. I also snapped a nice selection of reportage photos to go into the THIMUN Mutiny newspaper that’s printed at the end of each day.”

Isobel’s responsibilities were rather different as she describes, “I work as part of the layout team and our job is to put all of the material that the reporters, photographers and artists submit into a document, which is then sent off to the printer. It’s a challenge because at the start of the

process we only have a vague idea of what the pages are going to include, but we have to create the template before the material and information is received, so it’s often not the correct size. We have to rearrange everything at the end, so we’re the ones who can’t leave until everything is done. To give ourselves a challenge each day we try to recreate the style of a famous newspaper from somewhere in the world. Yesterday for example the paper was in the style of La Prensa which is a Spanish paper, today the publication will be in the style of a Chinese publication, this makes our jobs far more interesting as otherwise it would be more or less the same each day.”

An ever expanding industry As a result of the ever evolving world of the internet, social media and the growing demand for instant reporting, the communications and media sector is set to continue to thrive.

This in turn has the potential to open up a range of career opportunities within the media world. Whilst many of the BSN Media Crew and THIMUN Press Team may still be weighing up their future career path options, Laura certainly recognises the value of the experience she gained whilst working at THIMUN, “ It’s definitely been interesting, I’ve really enjoyed the work and it’s opened up a few doors.” Nicole was also asked if press and media is an area she’d consider taking further “yes definitely, I’m interested in media, communications and journalism, so this has been a great experience for me and it is an area I’d like to pursue at university.”

Security and safety Keeping students safe has always been a priority for the BSN. Student safety and security is an ongoing partnership between BSN staff, students, the city authorities and our parents – and we all have a role to play in this responsibility. The BSN consults

10

with city officials, independent contractors and local police, to review best practices. It is through these discussions that we are able to identify areas for enhancement of our school security, road safety and emergency procedures.

Road Safety In 2010 Traffic Officer WJ De Gelder began working with the BSN community to create a safer flow of traffic at Junior School Vlaskamp, both on the campus driveway and on the main roads in front of and behind the school. This first phase saw the implementation of one-way traffic through the Overbosch Zwembad parking lot, the JSV driveway and also created an improved bus flow.

A zebra crossing and school zone markings were installed in 2015.

Since that time, Officer De Gelder has completed four training sessions for the staff and parent volunteers who act as the ‘lollipop’ traffic brigade during the busy mornings and afternoons.

In December 2015, Officer De Gelder also brought about some initial changes to safety at Junior School Diamanthorst, by moving the buses to the rear gate, thus keeping

the front entrance free of the additional bus traffic.

In March 2016 a zebra crossing will be added in front of JSD and staff/parent ‘lollipop’ volunteers will be trained to man the crossing which is very important especially because this road is particularly wide.

The city has significant road improvements planned for the road in front of JSD in early 2017, and this will include a complete overhaul of the infrastructure of the road and bicycle paths, all of which will include input from the BSN. When asked what parents can do to assist in road safety, Officer De Gelder shared: “Parents should never let children out of the car in the zebra crossing – I witnessed this again this morning – it is not safe. I also see children on bikes that are too big for them, also with heavy bags – this is very dangerous.”

Officer De Gelder will be conducting a BSN Family Association Sessions Team talk on “Road Safety in the Netherlands”: it is open to everyone and will take place on Monday 25 April 2016 from 19:00–21:00 at Junior School Vlaskamp.

Ensuring the ongoing safety and wellbeing of our young people is truly a partnership and as such it requires the cooperation and commitment of staff, parents, children and the local authorities alike. Staff and parents remain the best surveillance system in the school.

It is also important that parents teach their children how to keep themselves safe – whether it be road safety, personal safety or e-safety.

“It’s worth repeating that we all have a role to play. For example, when entering any of our facilities we must challenge anyone following us in or ‘tail-gating’ –

The BSN is recruiting for a Head of Security to take the lead in this crucial work across our campuses, with an appointment expected before Easter. This professional security expert will work alongside the BSN Environmental Health and Safety Committee (EHS) which is responsible for reviewing, evaluating and implementing appropriate actions to further augment overall safety and security. EHS Committee Chair and JSD Head Teacher, Angela Parry-Davies shares: “We cannot teach a child who is not happy and safe – so this lies at the very heart of what we do. We have a wide range of safe-guarding documents at each campus, which outline everything related to offsite evaluations for trips, supervisor ratios, guidelines for the Nurses, lockdown procedures and more.”

There are many physical security enhancements (both seen and unseen) which have been implemented and planned, in addition to the clear policy and guidelines about what to do in an emergency.

Communication is a crucial element of managing these issues with confidence but the best security plans remain confidential in nature – so as not to undermine the very goal we seek to achieve.

We can assure everyone that there are significant processes and protections in place, which have been coordinated with the input and guidance of the appropriate authorities.

this won’t be seen as being rude, it’s just about being aware and safe.

We must also make sure that we sign in and out of campuses, an important security and safety process. We’re pleased to be bringing in a discrete professional role to reinforce our culture of safety. Children, parents and staff will take great comfort from this, I’m sure.”

Internet security E-safety and Digital Citizenship is taught throughout the computing curriculum by the Learning Technology Manager (LTM) team. Children learn how to use technology legally, and appropriately. In addition, there are web filters to block the viewing of inappropriate content.

As digital citizens of the world we are encouraging our children to learn skills that will

help them to judge what they see and make careful choices to keep safe. This process develops gradually in an age sensitive way so that we guide them carefully and appropriately. Sharing our wisdom with the children is essential in this process.

Here are some common sense essentials from a Digital Parenting guide:

Second-hand uniforms Making school uniforms more sustainable!

We all realise that school uniforms never really wear out, and other families could benefit from them. We also feel badly about throwing out something that can still be used – especially because it is not good for the environment!

Therefore, the Second Hand Uniform team receives and sells good-quality, used uniform pieces which others still can use.

Let me start out with best wishes for a summerly spring to all BSN families and a special, warm welcome to new families. I hope you and your family will find the summer ahead full of joy!

The Family Association is all about building a strong school community, across school, teachers, parents and students. Many of us live abroad and have less of a family network who can back us up.

Therefore, we are particularly proud of our new initiative: the Family Safety Net, which offers support from other families in the case of an emergency. Details can be found on The Family Association pages on Gateway.

The Family Association is only as good as the feedback you provide, and during the spring you will receive a survey, which will

ask for your input, opinions and feedback. The survey results will help us be better – so please share your opinions by taking the time to fill it out! It matters to us.

We invite you to make frequent use of our regular Drop-In Coffee Mornings across the four campuses, in order to catch up with other parents. The details of these events can be found on Gateway under the Welcome Team.

In this issue we present our Second Hand Uniform team as well as our Bring and Buy team.

The Family Association has planned a number of events for the coming months and you will want to review them on the Gateway calendar.

Several times per year team leader Kirsty Modry (and a group of fantastic, parent volunteers; Iree Softsi, Marlen Ryser and Sharon Kerr) open the Second-hand Uniform “doors” at different campuses.

During the last sale 870,000 euro was raised and donated to a local charitable organisation, ‘Stichting van Het Kind’, which supports children who have been abused by their parents or guardians and are moved into foster homes.

Friendships have developed as a result of being in the FA, and I frequently get to meet new parents and staff members“, Kirsty shares: “The funds raised by the FA allow the wider community to be supported and the BSN children to benefit from gifts enhancing the school program. In my opinion it’s very important to give something back and to be part of your child’s school community.”

2 | Marlen Ryser Marlen has had two children at JSL since September 2015, and at their previous school she was also involved with the second hand uniform sale. It was a natural progression for her to volunteer to join this FA activity.

“I’m really enjoying working with the team, and the fact that I can meet parents from the other Junior campuses and Senior school, is a huge plus for me”, Marlen highlights.

Simply pack it in your car and bring it to the campus where a dedicated team from FA will help you sell any goods in good condition at our regular Bring and Buy events at the different Junior campuses.

The team help you sell anything – clothes, shoes, household goods, toys, books, but we do not do furniture or cars.

Any unsold items, at the end of the day, will be donated to one of FA’s designated charity groups.

At the last event we supported ‘The Orphan Feeding Foundation’ and at our next event ‘Terre des Homme Nederland’ will benefit from the sales.

Connecting the singing talents of BSN junior school students with those of the Senior School, to create the BSN Concert Choir has been one of the primary focuses of Joanne Kilpatrick, Head of Junior School Music and Alex Jarrett, Senior School Performance Director.

The cross-school Concert Choir is comprised of Year 4 to Year 8 auditioned students and has created a transitional bridge between the junior and senior schools. The choir is in its inaugural year and it will continue to grow with more auditions at the start of the new school year. Concerts and performances include The Winter Fair and All Staff Christmas Borrel in December, and the Gala Performances in March.

Young voices The highlight of the year for the choir was in January, when Y6, Y7, and Y8 members set off for London to take part in the Young Voices concert at the O2 Arena. During their four-day stay the children took part in a number of vocal and instrumental activities. On the first day of their visit they were treated to a fantastic workshop of shared singing and performance skills with professional vocal ensemble Apollo5 at the Gresham Centre. The two hour session ended with a mini concert featuring the two choirs together, singing a diverse range of songs including Uptown Funk and a round of spirituals.

The following morning everyone was up early to take part in a walking tour of the highlights of London. From Convent Garden to Big Ben, the touring choir took in the major sights

help of a member of the Lower and Senior Choirs, for a morning of fantastic singing at JSL! It was the annual Joint Singing Day and, this year in particular, there was lots to do.

The day began with a warm up including some solfège and beatboxing and then the singers got to work on the choral items for the “Music Shall Live” BSN Gala Concert on the 8th of March.

The children sang brilliantly and it was such a pleasure to be supported by the older children to add harmonies to the pieces. The morning ended with a mini-concert and Mr Porritt was able to show everyone that by engaging in music they were actually making their brains grow! We always suspected musicians were geniuses; now we have proof!

Junior Gala The afternoon featured a wide range of talented BSN junior school students. Performances included individual and combined junior school choirs; the joint junior orchestra; the JSV Ukelele Group; instrumental solos; the BSN Concert Choir; the JSL Theatre Club, and Shine JSD Performing Arts Group.

It was a packed hall and the children exhibited their enthusiasm as well as their talents!

of England’s capital and were even treated to a musical performance by the marching band of the Coldstream Guards as part of their daily march from St James’ to Buckingham Palace.

In the afternoon everyone moved to the Southbank Centre where the students and staff were treated to an expert session in Javanese Gamelan, in which they learned about the instruments and customs of traditional Javanese music. By the end of the two hour session the choir were confidently performing a piece known as the “Chaotic Cow Pen”.

On Wednesday morning everyone was gearing up for the main event of the tour: the Young Voices massed choir concert at the O2 Arena. Everyone arrived nice and early with time for photos and a look around the impressive building then set about rehearsing for the show that evening. The children sang in a choir of almost 8000 children from in and around London to an audience of over 16,000. The BSN even got a shout out from the conductor as the only international choir in the performance. It was a huge achievement and everyone had a fantastic time. We are already planning next year’s trip!

The Music Shall Live Gala, a real ‘music marathon’ featured more than 300 performers across the BSN who performed two separate concerts in the JSL Sports Hall. Both concerts included numerous crossschool performances, and a variety of choral and instrumental ensembles; they were a reflection of the focus on expanding music performance opportunities across the BSN.

Senior Gala The Senior Gala featured all the Senior School ensembles: Lower School Choir; Senior Choir; Performance Choir; Orchestra; Swing Band; Ensemble 12. The Concert Choir also performed in the evening concert, as did the Community Choir. A number of Y6 students were also invited to play with the Orchestra and to sing with the choirs. There was a rousing massed choir performance of ‘When You Believe’ from Prince of Egypt, and the concert finished with ‘Music Shall Live’, a combined piece for all the instrumentalists and singers.

There are clearly a significant number of musically talented students across The BSN, and an outstanding array of instrumental teachers and music staff that have worked hard to foster these talents.

We look forward to watching these talents grow as they move through the BSN.

Instrumental initiatives JSD hosted this year’s annual whole school instrumental day featuring almost 100 musicians from all four corners of the BSN who worked together to perform two pieces of music from scratch.

The first piece they played was a gypsy folk dance which featured

Konstantin, the saxophone teacher, adding a wonderful solo over the top. The second piece was a pop piece called Pie, Mash and Peas.

Joanne Kilpatrick explained the process: “All the children came in having not looked at the music at all and learned it in about 45 minutes, with help from the music teachers and some children from the senior school. It was a great morning of music making!” This is a great illustration of students from all over the BSN working together – well done everyone!

In addition to the cross school instrumental day the development of the instrument programme continues with Year 2 violin programme at each junior school and string ensembles for KS2 to

ensure the learning continues out of class music sessions. The BSN Year 2 violin programme for all three junior schools began last year and has been well received by both parents and children. There is also a Cross School Orchestra in the works for 2016–2017.

The Instrumental and Vocal Lessons Programme is now in its third year; there are over 500 students having lessons in all four BSN schools, with 50 teachers.

Examinations are available through the ABRSM and Trinity/Guildhall to help provide further challenges for our students.

Plans are in development for a half term Music Camp which would be open to all students – offering both singing and instrumental lessons”. Stay tuned for more information on musical opportunities at the BSN!

ISGA The annual gymnastics trip to the Independent Schools Nationals is a very special weekend for everyone involved. It’s a test of competitive nerve and a real team effort from start to finish.

As far as the results were concerned, the standards were as impressive as ever. Any medal positions achieved are a massive

reason to be proud of our teams.

Special mention to Sara Graeber who achieved a highly credible 3rd position in the Voluntary Floor Under 13 Category; Ella van Zoest who came 3rd on the Voluntary Vault in the Over 13’s, and Claudia Del Rio who finished as runner up on the Set Vault in the Under 15 age group.

medal, huge well done. The Over 13 team, who have been plagued by injuries also medaled in 6th place in the synchronised group sequence, and top-scored on synchronisation. The Under 15 team came 5th and the Under 11s exceeded all our expectations, with their huge improvement.

As much of a cliché as it may sound, we’re genuinely proud of every single one of our gymnasts.

BSN gymnastics vs BSB In January both Junior and Senior gymnasts competed against British School of Brussels (BSB). There were some very good performances from our girls.

This BSN team in this youngest age group included three Year 2 girls for the first time in our gymnastics history.

The first Sunday in March saw the largest ever BSN contingent of staff, students, and

participating in the CPC Den Haag Loop 2016. With 55 staff and 129 students from all our schools who competed in either 1k kids run, 2.5k youth run, 5k, 10k and half marathons – Team BSN was out in

full force. And it wasn’t all about

quantity, there were quite some personal bests met on the course by many staff and students.

A couple of noteworthy examples were that of JSD Year 6 student Callum Lochhead, who completed the 5k in just over 20 minutes and JSV Deputy Head Christopher Bailey who had a personal best of 38 minutes for his 10k run and Joe Masterson who finished his half marathon in 1:24! On a day filled with a variety of seasons: rain, hail and some lovely sunshine – all in all it was a superb day of fitness and team spirit. Congratulations to all runners and a heartfelt thank you to all the volunteers who made it all come together!

New pitches Half Term ski trips During February half term students from across the BSN were off on two ski trips.

A selection of Year 5 and 6 pupils from the BSN Junior Schools set off on the first ever junior school ski trip. The children were varied in their winter sport experience from those who ski/snowboard annually, to some who have never experienced snow before. With ski school every day, evening activities and a slalom race at the end of the week everyone came home exhausted and happy!

38 Senior School students also hit the slopes in Austria on their own BSN ski trip – ski lessons all day and entertainment in the evening, meant students and 5 members of staff were busy all week.

On both accounts the weather was fabulous and everyone enjoyed themselves immensely!

The School is pleased to announce that plans are currently underway for two all-weather pitches to be placed at Senior School. The largest will be a full sized floodlit 4G for rugby and football pitch on the main field, with a smaller multi use games area (MUGA) suitable for hockey and other sports.

The current fields are highly dependent on good weather as they are prone to flooding and freezing. With the new pitches the school will be able to provide for year-round multiple sports at the BSN for all students. The new pitches will also provide more opportunities for extra-curricular activities, house based sports, COBIS Games preparations and competitive fixtures.

These exciting new facilities are expected to be available in September 2016.

BSN Hosts ISST Rugby in the sunshine This year, we hosted the ISST Rugby Cup – the five team tournament saw schools from London, Brussels and Paris compete in two days of top quality games played at Diok Rugby Club in Leiden.

The competition was a huge success on all fronts with The BSN doing exceptionally well.

The BSN faced the American School in London (ASL) in the first game which was close but our team hung on and won 12-10. Facing the British School of Brussels (BSB) in their second game, our boys again showed fantastic spirit to win the game comfortably 19-7. Elsewhere, ACS Cobham (Cobham) were the team to beat, running up easy

Girls ISST Basketball Team take on Paris Our Girls ISST Basketball Team headed to the American School of Paris (ASP), to compete for the Division II title. Following a solid season in the Dutch league, spirits were high.

The first game against the American School of Israel boosted morale, as hard work led the girls to victory. Unfortunately, their next match against Zurich International School proved gruelling and after a battle, Zurich won 40-31.

Day two saw Cobham build on their early dominance, seeing off both The BSN 29-3 and then ASL 317. The BSN was tied with BSB going into the last game – ASL vs BSB. BSB needed to win and score four tries to secure third place – after 40 minutes of hard rugby BSB took the win 10-5 but were unable to claim a bonus point, meaning The BSN claimed third overall. The quality of The BSN team was noted through the ISST All-Tournament selections for Nick Russell, Adam Kus, Matthew Moss and George Green-Hix. This was a great tournament that was only made possible by the efforts of the whole BSN community. A special thank you goes to all parents and families that hosted visiting students during the tournament and the support

The second day saw the toughest game yet, against hosts (ASP) – and despite pressure from the home team, BSN won by 3 points in the last 30 seconds of double overtime to qualify for the semifinals. Unfortunately, fatigue from the ASP game led to our exhausted girls lose to Munich International School.

The girl’s admirable work ethic and grit, meant that the team secured the bronze medal for the second year in a row. Their 16 point win against Frankfurt International School was an enormous victory and reflected the team’s cohesion and attitude. A special mention goes to Benedetta Sechi for being selected for the ISST All-Tournament award.

March is the highlight of the swimming season and signifies the end of those dreaded early morning starts – it’s also a time to test whether those endless miles of training in the pool were really worth it. This years’ ISST Swimming Championships were jointly hosted by the British and International Schools of Brussels (BSB and ISB). Twenty BSN swimmers competed in the hope of securing a medal or two and if all was well maybe even a trophy.

Day one saw 11 of our swimmers qualify for finals in individual events with three of our four relay teams making their finals too. Emma Berry claimed the first medal by winning gold in the varsity girls 200m Freestyle and Tom Hare won a hard fought bronze in the junior boys 100m Breaststroke.

Kassidy Dawn defended her title and won gold in the varsity girls 100m Breaststroke and grabbed silver in the varsity girls 50m Freestyle. Both the junior boys and the varsity girls

Boys Basketball The boys ISST basketball team travelled to Vienna to take part in the Division 2 Boys championships.

The team went into the tournament with confidence having had a good season and beaten local rivals ISH comfortably. The team’s first game was against basketball powerhouse St. John’s from Brussels and the boys started slowly and were unable to make up the difference losing a tough game 58-14. Disappointed, the boys rallied in game two and turned this disappointment into a fantastic victory, beating the British School of Brussels 56-42.

Day two saw the team face the tournament favourites in Cairo American School in their last division game. Although BSN started brightly the speed and height of the Cairo team showed and the BSN lost 7430. The team refocussed in their next match against ACS Hillingdon and showed great character by taking an

Day two saw 6 BSN swimmers reach the finals, with both the junior and varsity girls, as well as the junior boys progressing to the finals in their relays. In those finals, Ignazio Nunzi, got off to a great start, swimming his way to a bronze in the junior boys 100m freestyle. Emma Berry then won back-to-back gold’s in the 100m freestyle and 100m backstroke before the junior boys ran Cairo American college close to win silver in the freestyle relay. Not to be undone the varsity girls went on to win a second silver in their relay, ending a very successful campaign for the team.

In all, BSN swimmers achieved 63 personal best times and won 11 medals in the 33 events entered (4 Gold, 5 Silver, 2 Bronze), placing BSN 3rd overall on the medals table. Additionally, Emma Berry set new school records in the 100 and 200m freestyle as well as the 100m backstroke and Kassidy Dawn broke her own 100m breaststroke record once again.

The BSN Swim Team finished a surprising 6th out of 14 on the points table. In the individual divisions, the

junior girls did well to finish 7th and the varsity boys, decimated by injury and illness, were unfortunate not to place. Both the junior boys and varsity girl’s team’s did however do the school proud, bringing home two second place trophies for their individual competitions, a truly exceptional result!

COBIS Senior Games 2016 The COBIS Senior Games 2016 squad and supporters were at Dubai College this year. Thursday was an early start for the opening ceremony and the swimming event, held at the world class Hamdan Sports Complex.

This was the biggest challenge for the BSN team, despite the students’ commitment during their 7am swim training in preparation for the games.

Noortje Mol won her 50m butterfly heat, making it to the finals and

placing 6th and the girls’ medley relay also made it to the finals, ranking 8th. Overall – a fantastic result as we were ranked 11th.

Friday’s venue was Abu Dhabi New York University Athletics facilities where our students impressed with their individual heat results and many made it to the finals. Ezinma Herler placed 3rd in the 100m finals, 2nd in long jump, 3rd in 800m and was also in the girls’ 4x100m relay finals who finished 3rd overall. Similarly, the boys teams made the finals and placings within their heats but sadly the 4x100m

relay team just missed out on a medal placing 4th overall and Gerald Izkaboh received a medal for 3rd place in long jump.

On Saturday, the BSN squad were in football mode which took place at Dubai College. The girls’ team battled through injuries and made it through to the second tier semi–finals and the boys battled for a respectable 4th place.

The BSN team placed a highly creditable 6th out of 20 schools – it was a fantastic experience for the students whose team spirit throughout the games was inspiring.

NEWS The value of the BSN Alumni – Student Connection The BSN Alumni Association is committed to creating and fostering networking connections at any stage in the career of our alumni.

Providing internship opportunities for our emerging alumni is especially gratifying – here is one recent story.

During last year’s inaugural Careers Network Dinner, an event which offers our Sixth Form students the opportunity to meet with BSN Alumni to discuss career and university options, alumnus Edward Pleeth (Class of 2001) met Christopher Smith. Whilst discussing a potential career in Law, Edward offered Christopher an internship with his firm in London to help him with his discovery and insight into the field of Law. Christopher shares thie value of his experience: “On 26 June 2015, I attended the first ever networking dinner organised by the BSN Alumni Society. The event hosted 14 BSN Alumni, current 6th form

students and I was privileged to be seated with Mr. Edward Pleeth, now a leading Barrister in London. My choice of subject to study at University was Law, so the Networking Dinner was an excellent opportunity for me. I subsequently began my Law Degree at the University of Reading in September. During the evening, Edward kindly offered to give me a one-week internship; the arrangements were made and I arrived at his Chambers in Fleet Street on Monday 4th January.

During the course of my Internship with Edward Pleeth, I had the unique opportunity to work on real cases, such as a death in police custody whereby I was also able to go to Court. Working on actual cases on a day-to-day basis brought a new dimension to studying Law and kept me captivated. Applying the Law to the unique circumstances of each case was fascinating. Additionally, I had the chance to meet with the individuals involved with each case and share discussions with other Barristers about the way in which they formulate their arguments for court.

In my view, the most rewarding part of my internship was the benefit of learning how a Barrister operates, but then being allowed to go on to work in Chambers independently. From this, the work that I did was used

by Edward in court after my internship finished.

I am extremely grateful to the BSN Alumni Association for facilitating this internship opening, as it has fuelled my enthusiasm for studying Law and brought an insight into the world of Barristers, that few get the opportunity to witness, to the extent that I did”.

We wish Christopher all the best as he pursues his future career in Law. We also would like to thank Edward Pleeth for his support of current BSN students.

Remembering Mark Wynne to him teaching was an inspiration, to go with him on any of his many fieldtrips and skiing holidays was unforgettable, to hear him enthusing about his rugby teams was to know what true passion means. And on top of it all he was great, great fun. The flood of messages which have come in gives some indication of the affection and gratitude felt by countless alumni from their twenties to their sixties all around the globe.

Over 150 of Mark Wynne’s friends gathered at BSN Senior School on Sunday for a Memorial to remember this BSN ‘Legend’ and former Head of Geography.

Friends included current and former staff and students of the BSN as well as a large contingent from Leiden Students Rugby Club.

The ceremony was officiated by Revd. Ruan Crew – the Chaplain of St James Voorschoten – and tributes to Mark were made by his old friend and colleague, Mike Weston; a representative and friend from LSRG, Rob van der Linden and finally

by Mark’s nephew, Nick Edwards.

Nick spoke of Mark’s wish to have his ashes scattered in Engleberg – one of his favourite places on earth and the site of many, many BSN Geography field trips.

We at the BSN were shocked and saddened to hear of the unexpected death of Mark Wynne.

Mark joined the staff of the then English School way back in 1971 and was Head of Geography for nearly 40 years until his retirement.

It would be no exaggeration to say that he was one of the most committed and gifted teachers to have passed through the staffrooms of our school. To listen
