Insight Summer 2017
It hardly seems possible that we have reached the end of another academic year – what a year it has been! Our International Baccalaureate Career-related Programme (IBCP) continues to give our students the tools required to forge entrepreneurial projects. IBCP student Usman Malik (pictured with me above) has not wasted any time in applying the skills he was taught into his new venture – a nitro coffee bar in the centre of the Hague. I wish him all the best and will know where to go for my coffee from now on! The launch of the BSN International Leadership Academy (ILA) shows the commitment the Board of Governors and myself have to the professional development not just for BSN staff but for the wider international school community across Europe. You can read more on pages 6 and 7 about the aims of the ILA and how, under the expert eye of Director Liz Free, it will be ‘rethinking education’. On top of the excellent academic work, our students have rolled up their sleeves to support many great causes and helped raise thousands of euros. There is so much to be learnt from taking part in charitable projects – personal learning as well as practical skills – as you will read on pages 14 and 15.

Our mission at the British School in the Netherlands (BSN) is to deliver academic excellence and create inspiring places for children and young people to learn and grow into confident individuals. In order to achieve this mission we need to recruit, maintain and retain a world-class workforce. From our facilities staff through to health and safety, our business
unit staff and our teaching and learning staff, we need everyone contributing to our collective endeavour for the benefit of our pupils.
And herein lies the role of the International Leadership Academy (ILA) which launched on 1st May 2017 to much acclaim with Dame Alison Peacock, CEO of the Chartered College of Teaching. The ILA is the learning and development hub for the BSN and the international schools’ workforce. Its function is to provide a dynamic and innovative centre of professional learning and development for international school staff, bringing world-class expertise to the heart of Europe.

Liz Free, Director of the ILA, says: “The international education workforce is entering a period of unprecedented change. From the fast-paced evolution of technology in education, our personal professional lives to global changes in curriculum, pedagogy and education practice alongside the evolving needs of our pupils for today and the unknown future of tomorrow. “Education is not standing still and neither are we. With the number of international schools doubling in the last five years alongside education staff shortages across the globe, we need to ensure that we are nurturing world-class staff who are at the forefront of education practice; constantly curious, pioneering and changing.” Working in partnership with internationally-renowned organisations, the ILA provides impactful programmes specifically designed for the needs of these international staff. Our partners include the University College London Institute of Education,
number 1 in the world for Education in the QS rankings, the Chartered Institute of Personnnel Development (CIPD), the British School of Coaching and Westhage Training to name but a few. There are four key strands within the ILA programmes, designed for the full breadth of staff in our school communities: ● Leading & Supporting Learning ● Leadership & Management Development ● Health, Safety & Wellbeing ● General Skills This hub of learning is rethinking professional education as we seek to develop impactful programmes that have been designed with international research evidence in mind about what works best. Our provision takes into account the outcomes of the ‘Developing Great Teaching: Lessons from the international reviews into effective professional development’ Report (TDT:2015) and the
Teachers’ Standard for Professional Development, Department for Education, London (2016), which states that: ● Professional development should have a focus on improving and evaluating pupil outcomes. ● Professional development should be underpinned by robust evidence and expertise. ● Professional development should include collaboration and expert challenge. ● Professional development programmes should be sustained over time. And all this is underpinned by, and requires that: ● Professional development must be prioritised by school leadership As we strive for global education excellence, we look forward to working with colleagues across the world as we rethink professional learning and development for 21st century schools.

What does home mean to you? British School mom Sam bought her favourite lamp from van Nierop sfeer & verlichting: ‘This lamp has become a symbol of home to me as it has travelled with us since our very first days as an expat family.’ At lamp boutique van Nierop sfeer & verlichting, Jhs Bildersstraat 71 in The Hague, you can either choose one of the unique lamps from their collection or have a lamp custom made. Go to www.vannieropverlichting.nl/bsn to view their collection of lamps and chandeliers for a cosy interior, or come to their shop with your own ideas and have them realized.
SCIENCE MATTERS It was a day of discovery for our Year 2s across all three Junior Schools as they continued their science learning journey. Our little scientists learnt how experimentation can solve a whole range of conundrums, as Junior School Leidschenveen (JSL) Year 5 became the experienced experts and ran a selection of scientific activities to challenge the Year 2 children. Armed with their science passports, they set about investigating how to make the biggest bubbles – with some bubbles almost as big as them! Science can produce many ‘wow’ moments and you can imagine the amazement on students’ faces
as they discovered the alchemy of secret letter writing! Using everyday household objects (paper, lemon, cotton wool buds and a hair drier
in case you were wondering) they quickly began writing invisible invitations to squeals of delight. As they moved from one science stand to another, they were ready for each new challenge that awaited them and learned that any puzzle can be approached scientifically and solved through team work. Cross-school activities, such as this one, are a regular occurrence, giving our students an enhanced social learning experience where new friends from the other BSN campuses can be made. Barbara van Duijne, Lead Teacher Science at JSL said: “The event, dreamt up by the cross school science team, was a huge success. It was amazing watching the older children work with the younger ones to help them learn. All students involved really rose to the challenge and showed what it was to be a young person at the BSN following their head, hand and heart.”

A-Z
of BSN Trips
Speak to any of our students and some of their greatest BSN memories will be linked to a trip or two. From local day trips and short residential adventures right through to longer international expeditions, our students can experience many different cultures and customs, not to mention strengthen their friendships and learn valuable team building skills. Here’s a flavour of just some of the many BSN trip destinations and their learning outcomes.
Ardennes The ever-popular Year 6 residential trip challenges students with activities such as rock climbing, abseiling, archery and kayaking. Beijing Now in its 21st year, the BSN’s Beijing exchange programme selects student representatives to visit China as well as play host. Using chopsticks has, over the years, consistently been reported as a new skill for our students. Culture Experiencing the cultural heritage of another country through art gallery, museum and theatre visits broadens students’ knowledge further. Drenthe Year 5s can’t get enough of this three-day residential trip. Not only do they try landscape painting and canoeing but they also grow in independence as they take responsibilities in making decisions.

Educational Many trips are linked with a particular curriculum subject or topic, others are related to broader personal developmental aims of the school – providing opportunities for students to stretch and challenge themselves outside the classroom. Fun Our ability to learn increases when it’s enjoyable and fun. Having fun is a must! Germany From drama festivals to sporting events, there are plenty of opportunities for our students to hop across the border and interact with the wider international school community.

Nature Outdoor learning and getting close to nature feature heavily in geography field trips. OMG There are plenty of these moments! Paris Many sporting fixtures take our students to the French capital for COBIS and ISST competitions, whilst drama and language students have soaked in the Parisian culture to support their studies. Quest Plenty of challenges, achievements and goals are overcome and met much to the delight of our students. Russia International Baccalaureate History students visit Moscow and St Petersburg to see for themselves the places where major events took place. They enhance their understanding of the nature of both the Tsarist Empire and the Soviet State, as well as gain an increased understanding of contemporary Russia. Skills Life skills, practical skills, professional skills; there is so much our students learn about themselves and what they can achieve during a trip.

Walking Whether it’s scaling a couple of peaks, or tracing some cobbled streets, students can expect to record a fair few km during their travels. Ypres The stark reality of the Great War at this atmospheric battlefield always has a lasting impact on our History students. No matter where you’ve been, it goes to show there really is ‘no place like home’.

Sweet Charity Developing a Social Responsibility
Project Africa
This is why, at the BSN, opportunities to take part in charitable projects are numerous and accessible to all. Not only do they provide great learning outcomes for our students such as developing and implementing fundraising campaign strategies but they also offer an intrinsic sense of social responsibility – a quality students can take with them wherever they go as they progress through life. BSN students have done the school and wider community proud raising thousands of euros for many worthwhile causes. Here’s a few them…

There’s something to be said for that warm fuzzy feeling after dropping a euro in a collecting tin, or completing a JustGiving donation for a friend who’s about to undertake heroic feats of epic proportions such as climbing Everest or running the London Marathon. For the Herculean friend, the overwhelming sense of achievement is indescribable. Knowing that you’ve made a small difference to the life of someone else, or the environment, or an animal is an impressive act that needs and should be celebrated. 14
Project Africa Starting in 2010, Project Africa has had a significant impact in East Africa in a short space of time, building libraries, science and computer laboratories, classrooms, kitchens, water tanks and toilets, and planting avocado orchards. Since 2014, a Breakfast Programme has also been set up feeding 800 children every school day supplemented by a de-worming programme. This particular charity gives an extraordinary opportunity for our current Year 12 students to become directly involved in a charity project in Kenya’s Rift Valley, home to an incredibly diverse and abundant ecosystem, and also to people who live in abject poverty. The trip involves working extensively on a project which will directly benefit people who are in need and provides an opportunity for the students to experience Kenya

UNICEF This year, BSN’s Performing Arts Week demonstrated to our students how much fun can be had
whilst campaigning for a great cause. Performing Arts Week is a time of musical mayhem when students, their families and teachers get involved with all kinds of celebrations of music and performance. Concerts and performances were held showcasing school ensembles and choirs as well as soloists and teachers who were busking around the campuses, before and after school. And whilst we got to enjoy the music, all the money raised went directly to UNICEF – an international charity working to defend the rights of children in 190 countries around the world. The infectious BSN feel-good feeling swept its way through JSD, JSL, JSV and SSV as the music department filmed students and staff singing to Justin Timberlake’s hit ‘Can’t Stop the Feeling’ and thanks to the power of social media the clip was viewed over 5800 times on the school’s YouTube channel. The Project Africa 2018 team will build on these past successes, aiming to build more classrooms to help reduce the number of students in each room, therefore further improving educational outcomes and providing a bank of solar panels to help the school become independent of the national grid. None of the above developments would have been possible without the tireless fundraising of the Project Africa teams and of course the supporters who have so generously put their hands in their pockets.

Spirit of Alumni The ‘BSN Spirit of Alumni’ is presented every year to a final year student at the Year 13 Assembly. We see our Alumni as ambassadors
of The BSN and we are proud of all they have achieved in their time with us. The BSN Alumni Association likes to recognise a student who represents the very best of The BSN through their continued contribution to the school both inside and outside the classroom. A student who served the school community with energy, enthusiasm and selfless dedication. A student who has shown such commitment to the BSN community that the school believes they will continue to actively support The BSN and its values long into the future – this student therefore represents the spirit of the BSN Alumni Association itself. This year The Spirit of Alumni was presented to Andrew Buglass.
BSN Connect. There were gasps around the room as they saw how the school has grown over the years. Once the presentation was over, it was time for some serious dance moves. Thank you to all who came and made the evening so enjoyable.
James Oxlade (Acting SSV Head Teacher) said: “Andrew goes above and beyond what is expected of a BSN Sixth Former. He is heavily involved in Ultimate Frisbee and the Running Club, he is a Year 10 Student Council leader and Gold International Award participant. He has represented the school in four ISST football tournaments. Beyond his contribution to the life of the school, he takes his work very seriously and is entirely positive and open minded. He is friendly, polite, supportive of his fellow students and always ready to lend energy and verve to the projects he is involved in. He embodies everything one could hope for in a young person setting out from the BSN.” Congratulations Andrew!
Looking back, moving forward 16
Huge congratulations go to BSN Alumnus Jon Brittain (class of 2005) who has scooped one of the most prestigious theatrical awards in London for his play Rotterdam, taking home the Olivier prize for Outstanding Achievement in an Affiliate Theatre for 2017. Jon now works as a playwright in London, however it seems clear from the play’s title that his time studying in the Netherlands has had a lasting impact. In an interview given to The Reviews Hub, Jon said of the title and reason for setting his play there:
Remembering Our Alumni Sadly, we lost a number of Alumni this year. It’s perhaps all the more sad that some passed at very young ages and others in tragic circumstances. However, what should be celebrated is that they all made a massive impact both in their professional and personal lives. The BSN pays tribute to them here.
Chris Bevington Class of 1993 Chris was Director of Global Partnerships for Spotify. He was a student of great promise. A quote from a reference written by the Head of Sixth Form in 1993 stated: “In English he is considered a student of exceptional ability. He is an exceptionally talented
“I moved to the Netherlands when I was 13 with my family and went to a British school near The Hague for five years. I love Holland and I wanted to write a bit about the culture and the place as it means a lot to me. However I also wanted to isolate the characters from support groups, friends or family. Rotterdam is a kind of limbo for them. It’s somewhere they ended up but not somewhere they ever intended to stay. I liked the irony that Rotterdam is a port, with lots of people and things just passing through, but these characters are stuck and can’t leave.” Rotterdam transferred to Broadway in May. sportsman and has represented the BSN in several sports on numerous occasions. If circumstances had been different (i.e. if he had not had to leave the school halfway through his exam courses) I have no doubt that he would have been contemplating Oxbridge applications at this time.”
Sophie Miller Class of 2008 Sophie was a popular and highly intelligent student who went on to study at Selwyn College, Cambridge and then at Trinity Hall. Upon completion of her doctorate she moved to Copenhagen and was a researcher into stem cells at the university there.
Curt Eysink Class of 1980 Curt was originally South African and joined the school, with his brothers, Konrad and Paul, in 1973. DON’T PANIC!
WORLD IN CRISIS DAY
History at Junior School Vlaskamp (JSV) went to a whole new level as Year 6 students practised the art of diplomacy as part of an experiential take on the History unit: ‘World in Crisis’. This unit looks specifically at a range of conflict based historical events, such as the impact of World War 2 on women’s rights, through exploring sources. Various aims and skills were identified, including:
18
● History skills – evaluating, comparing and analysis ● Other skills – compromising, persuading, lead/follow, problem solving, empathy and awareness of global challenges.
The Year 6 teachers then ingeniously breathed life into the unit by creating a fictional world made up of countries with a distinctly Greek mythological theme. Students assigned themselves ministerial roles and negotiated on issues of health, education, finance and defence. In preparation for the day, students had researched diplomatic life and teachers played the role of diplomatic experts throughout the day to guide them if needed. As the ‘world conference progressed’ teachers surprised students with a range of crisis events, such as an invasion, infection or flood. Also, investments and trade meant they received some support and ‘tokens.’ By the end, two elected student leaders closed the conference and reflected whether the agreed goals of harmony, equality and togetherness, had – to a degree – been achieved. It was great to see students working together to solve the global problems through astounding maturity and compromise.
Let Your Child’s
Confidence
Every summer, while BSN students and staff take a well-deserved break, The BSN Language Centre is busy preparing to welcome hundreds of children to take part in its popular Summer School. Held over two weeks and at various BSN campuses (this year, Junior School Leidschenveen will be hosting for the first time), the Summer School is a great way to support children whose first language is not English to develop their language skills in a fun and supportive environment. Summer School welcomes children of all levels of English, from absolute beginner to advanced.
Language barriers are quickly broken down by both experienced English as an Additional Language (EAL) teachers and Activity Teachers. This year’s activities will include outdoor exploring, percussion, drama and gardening. The theme of this year is The Great Outdoors! The Summer School’s main aims are to develop students’ fluency and confidence in English
“I met some nice people and learned a lot of new words”
Facts ● First began in 1987 – Happy 30th birthday! ● 250 places each year ● Different themes each year ● Open to ages 5–16
“The best week of my life!” alongside their vocabulary and cultural understanding. But on top of these learning goals, there is also an invaluable outcome that teachers witness every year: friendships. For many students, this will be their fifth or sixth year of Summer School. They return each year not only because of the excellent teaching and fun they have experienced with us, but also because of the friendships they have made.

SCHOOL
REPORT
Students at Senior School Voorschoten (SSV) showcased their journalistic skills on the global stage as they took part in The BBC School Report. The BBC initiative provides students a chance to ‘report on real news’ and the content they produced in 24 hours was nothing less than astonishing.
The aim of the project was to give students the opportunity to be creative, explore the world of journalism and work as a team with like-minded individuals. The team’s first task was to think about possible topics they would like to report on and during their weekly meetings, they began scheduling their news items, just like a real news desk. On the actual day, reports flew in on life in an international school, the local community and the recent Dutch elections, as well as our environmental responsibilities. Furthermore, as the School Report fell on the same week as Equality Week, our journalists highlighted the incredible work SSV had done to address this subject by interviewing students and staff about their thoughts on equality, diversity, gender, and mental health issues. It was a great team effort and you can see all their reports on our BSN Voices blog voices.britishschool.nl/ bbcschoolreport

News from
The Family Association We have all experienced situations where time flies and we suddenly realise that days, weeks, months or years have passed in the blink of an eye. We look over our shoulder and what was a Junior School pupil, now is a Senior School student. Flashes of faces and names fly though our memory, recalling the many people we met on our journey. This is where I find myself, after five interesting years at The BSN and embarking on a new chapter in another country. Looking back at my time in the Family Association (FA), I am proud of the team we have developed, capable of running a diverse number of activities across the four campuses. Together, we have achieved a lot, and to me the most important achievement is we have given the FA a new and faster pulse, a strong will to do good in our community and to embrace across all interests. One excellent example is the creation of the Family Safety Net, a team supporting new and existing
22
families during extraordinary situations. Only a strong, open and solid community is able to offer this kind of help, fuelled by volunteering parents. Other examples are the FA’s two hallmark events, the Summer and Winter Fairs, attracting hundreds of parents and students, which financially enable the FA to make meaningful contributions to the community, giving back to students, parents and teachers alike. Alone in the past school year the FA made donations exceeding EUR 14,000, in addition to which donations have been made to local charities working with vulnerable children. FA activities, such as those mentioned and the dedicated work of our Welcome Team as well as our regular Coffee Mornings, have created a strong link across campuses, binding four sites into one FA. This has facilitated the creation of an active community where everyone knows the FA and its members. This is something I also take pride in as the Family
Association today is known for its energy, positive approach and openness in welcoming new families. As I move on, I hope that the FA will continue its current, positive trajectory, and a steady flow of volunteers will continue to take part and invest their time for the greater good of the entire school community. Thank you, Lisa Lisa Brunslev
Q&A with the International Team Name Irina Candina Country Russia
Q A Q A
How long have you been at BSN? My oldest daughter started in F1 in September 2016.
Is it important for a school like The BSN to have an ‘International Team’? I believe it is imperative for The BSN to have an ‘International Team’ since we all come from different countries with such diverse cultures. It is important nowadays that our kids will grow very respectful to each other, with a full understanding of the world and consideration to its diversity. They are part of a multicultural environment in which each person is respected, regardless of his or her background. They need to be exposed to the global ideas and easily transfer those ideas to the world. And I believe The BSN International Team promotes and supports these endeavours.
Q A
Do you socialize with parents across campus from your country/group? I started volunteering for the Russian speaking community in January 2017 and since then, we are meeting on a quarterly basis. Sometimes we have newcomers to The BSN from Russia and it is so important to provide support, especially if
one of the parents speaks only Russian. We do our best to participate in the school events, especially the FA fairs are a lot of fun. Of course, there is more to be done but we take it one step at a time.
Q A
Is it fun to join The BSN Summer Fair? This year was the first year that Russia participated in the Summer Fair. It was great to play a part in it.

Do you think the FA in general is important to our community? I believe yes! Parents always play an important role in the school life: families are better acquainted, feel more connected to the school, and have opportunities to volunteer and support the advancement of the school.
FA events coming up The FA Sessions Team regularly organises talks and workshops for BSN parents and staff members on topics that focus on factors influencing the lives of internationals and parenting issues.

Mock General Elections
International Festival Celebrates 80 Nationalities The International Festival is a BSN community event held every Spring that showcases the unique diversity of The BSN. With the assistance of the Family Association’s International Team, families and staff of The BSN coordinate and plan an evening filled with performances and food as a way to share their culture with each other. It’s a perfect harmony of diverse cultures brought together with entertainment and a lot of delicious food. Before the performances began, the halls of Senior School were filled with children adorning various international costumes of China, Spain, Portugal, Germany, South Korea, Israel, and India as they all prepared to enter the stage for their performances. The excitement in the air was contagious as they eagerly awaited their turn to stand in the spotlight after months of planning and practice – which was evident in their performances as they were all executed with absolute brilliance. Once the curtains drew on the last performance, and
24
the hosts of the evening shared parting words, the audience was invited into the atrium turned international café as families from 22 different countries set up stands of authentic cuisine and drink of their home countries. From curry to dumplings to mince meat pies and as many cakes as one could dream, it would be really difficult to leave the International Festival hungry. The BSN is proud to be the school of families from over 80 nationalities – we believe diversity and cultural understanding enhance the learning journey of students. And it is because of our Community and Family Association that events like this are possible.
As the UK voted on Thursday 8 June, so too did the Senior School students and staff in a mock election organised by Year 12 student, Isaac Ortlipp, and a team of Year 10 Business Enrichment students. To convey the idea of each political party’s values, Isaac explained them as applied to a BSN context. Hence the Conservatives would like to see stronger discipline, the Liberal Democrats would remove the school uniform, the Labour party would invest in even better pastoral welfare and so on. With 29 classes (constituencies) in Years 7–10, one Year 12 and one staff constituency, the Liberal Democrat party were ultimately victorious gaining a clear majority by winning 20 seats. With a 46% turnout this was a great insight into the democratic process for many students, as with 45% of the votes, the Lib Dems won 65% of the seats due to the ‘first past the post’ system of the UK voting system. Sadly for many hoping for the Liberal manifesto to be applied, this was just a mock election. Although as students woke up to the real election result the following day, ironically Friday was indeed a non-uniform day at school.
Challenging casual stereotyping, racism and other forms of social inequalities were the focus at Senior School during a vibrant and educational ‘Equality Week’ event. Starting on Wednesday 15 March, each day tackled a specific theme, notably: ● Equality ● Sustainability ● Identity ● Race and Ethnicity ● Justice ● Gender Challenging themes indeed! However, each one was organised brilliantly by Student Leaders and Assistant Headteacher for Student Leadership, Ms Clare Smith.
As Ms Smith explained: “Equality Week was borne about after an inappropriate joke was overheard and subsequently challenged by a BSN sixth former. The BSN believes in equipping our students with skills and confidence to not only make these challenges when needed but to also make a difference and turn negatives into learning opportunities. And they did just that!” The Atrium was full of engaging activities that were fun, but with strong messages behind them. For example, during Gender day, students wrote on gender specific figures the typical stereotypes that are often associated with males and females. Phrases such as “Man up!” for men and “Make me a sandwich” for women emphasised the unfair pressures society places upon both genders.
Don’t miss… The BSN Beginner’s Morning This is an open day especially for families with children in the Early Years (ages 3–5). Visit the campuses, meet the teachers and see how The BSN provides the best start to your little one’s education.

There were other events throughout the week including lively inter-school debate between The BSN and The American School in the Hague. It was great to see it so well supported. Our Student Leaders should feel very proud for organising what has to be a highlight in the SSV calendar.
Big Bold World 9 November 2017 We live in complex times – globalisation is changing our perspective of identity, safety, relationships, and life in general. How do we harness/embrace this shifting environment, and what role do we play in its evolution? How do we find solutions to the challenges we face or do we simply embrace the benefits of an ever-connected world that is simultaneously bringing us together and pushing us apart. Some of us might (re)connect the dots to find their own path, while others freely navigate the world – the question is, how can we build towards a shared solution? We are currently selecting/ curating speakers and entertainment for the event, so if you or anyone you know has a talent, a skill or an idea that they want to share on our TEDxYouth@BSN stage, please send an email to TEDxYouth@britishschool.nl with a brief outline of what they have to offer our Big Bold World.

Full STEAM Ahead The end of Spring term saw Junior School Leidschenveen executing its first ‘Get Steamed’ learning experience. An event that used all areas of our curriculum and involved the whole school developing their understanding under the umbrella of one theme – the world of animals. Every year group had a different project or area of study, specialists got involved creating lessons for special days, the Dutch department and EAL took the focus of animals into their language teaching. The result was a diverse range of learning activities that produced some stunning results. See the birds and fish hanging around the school, look out for the giant animal heads of endangered species and watch how the popularity of the bug hotel grows amongst our bug community!
26
The fun and learning did not stop there. As part of the experience we incorporated two house days for Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 activity days. The children had the opportunity to continue learning about animals in mixed age groups and get to know each other better. Incorporated into this were visits from the ‘mathmagician’ and author, Adam Bushnell, who shared their expertise and enthusiasm in Maths and writing with the children. The animal man also played his part sharing his reptiles with Year 2 and Year 4. We also had a range of visitors in school sharing their knowledge and expertise about animals. A number of parents and a student gave talks about animals and caring for pets to the children. The local community also got involved, a local vet came in and our BSN bee keeper visited Year 1. The local dieren ambulance came in to talk to the students about what they do and the students also collected useful pet items to help them in their work. It was fascinating to hear about the animals that need our help in Namibia from Stichting Spot. A group of Year 5 boys were so inspired that they took it upon themselves to do some fund raising. They raised around 300 euros for the cause. The highlight of the week would have to be the kinderboerderij in the playground. It was lovely seeing old and young bonding with the animals and finding out more about them.
World Book Day All over the globe people participated in World Book Day on 2 May. A day that celebrates all things literary – from the authors, illustrators, to the publishers, and of course the books! World Book Day spanned across two days here at the BSN and no detail was overlooked. Special storytellers were brought into Junior School Leidschenveen to delight and enchant the students in a living story, students dressed the part of their favourite book (or possibly even movie) character at Junior School Diamanthorst, and students at Junior School Vlaskamp created a set of fictional character Trump cards. It was magical to see students take ownership of their costumes and become their characters – truly being the example of what World Book Day is really all about.
THIMUN
Drumtastic JSD Junior School Diamanthorst was a sea of orange on Friday 5 May – Liberation Day. Bevrijdingsdag marks the anniversary of The Netherlands being freed from occupation in World War Two. It is a national time to remember those who have been lost in battle and to celebrate being able to live freely. The pupils of JSD, all dressed in orange, enjoyed an uplifting and energetic assembly led by our Dutch teachers, Juf Sandra and Juf Klazien. A day of activities then followed including traditional games, fruit kebab making and much singing and dancing. The highlight of the day was the Drumtastic workshop. This involved the pupils drumming on enormous exercise balls and following dance moves. It was a brilliant experience that everyone enjoyed immensely.
The whole of BSN’s Year 12 took part in The Hague International Model United Nations (THIMUN) at The World Forum in The Hague. The theme for this year’s THIMUN was ‘Borders in a Globalised World’. BSN students worked alongside 3,500 students from over 200 schools and 74 countries to debate and formulate peaceful solutions to many of the world’s problems. Our BSN student delegates represented the countries of Japan and Azerbaijan, including four student officers: Patrick Shepherd, President of the General Assembly; Lem de Vries, President of the Security Council; Sebastian Kolby, Assistant President of the Disarmament Committee; and Thomas Bathgate, Assistant President of the Environment Committee. Of course, all other students performed duties as Administrators – a role that involves a great deal of legwork! The Model United Nations (MUN) is an academic simulation of the United Nations that aims to educate student participants about current events, topics in international relations, diplomacy and the United Nations agenda. At The BSN, we believe that education extends beyond the classroom, this is why we offer students a wide range of leadership opportunities and community involvement projects.

IB Art exhibition International Baccalaureate Art students displayed their final exam pieces in a stunning exhibition at Senior School. The exhibition was a culmination of two years’ hard work for Ilona Haldemann, Josephine Lauferts and Kassidy Dawn who have been experimenting with different mediums and styles throughout the course, and now means they will leave the BSN with an impressive portfolio of work. All three students spoke about how proud they were to see their art on display and were excited about their next chapters once they leave the BSN this summer. University beckons with offers at Warwick and Utrecht for Josephine and Kassidy whilst Ilona is still considering options but one thing she is certain about is a career in garment design.

Just as the Summer term began, the Senior School Performance Choir took to the stage one last time. The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) hosted a week-long symposium for Women in Chemistry and they extended a special invitation to the BSN Senior School Performance Choir to welcome attendees on the first day of the event. As the panel meetings ended, the attendees were serenaded in the atrium of the OPCW by the acoustic cover of Imagine by John Lennon. The group’s harmonies floating through the room had an entrancing effect on the crowd. Once finished, they received a warm round of applause and a special thank you from the director of the OPCW.

As this was their last performance, they truly wrapped up on a high note.
And in the Junior Schools… When all campuses come together with the exceptional musical talents of students and teachers – magic happens! That’s the best way to describe the 2nd annual Junior Schools’ Music Gala at Junior School Leidschenveen. The joint choirs from all three Junior Schools kicked off the evening with a tribute to the late George Michael singing the uplifting song, Wake Me Up Before You Go Go. It set a great energy for the entire event, as they went on to play exceptional performances from soloists on the guitar, clarinet, and violin; the joint orchestra; and the junior and show choirs. The audience heard everything from classical pieces of Robert Schumann and
Jock McKenzie to more modern renditions of Ben E. King’s Stand By Me and Try Everything by Shakira. As the gala concluded, every performer came together with a showstopper from the Songs of Sanctuary: Adiemus by Welsh composer Karl Jenkins. With the accompaniment of the orchestra and the chants and melodies of the choir, the finale was absolutely marvellous. A better song could not have been chosen to sign off this momentous evening.
Drama
And in the Junior Schools… JSD Year 4 pupils treated parents and staff to a fantastic performance of a comedy musical entitled ‘Porridge’. The story followed a private detective, Jack Sprat, as he tried to solve a trail of crimes in Nurseryland. Full of well-known traditional nursery rhyme characters, the children sang and danced in unison as well as performed their jokes with excellent comedic timing. JSV Year 6 students enthralled audiences with their imaginative and thought provoking retelling of Roald Dahl’s classic story The Fantastic Mr. Fox. Set in the local forest Het Haagse Bos, and with a distinct Dutch flavour, audiences were transported to a world where talking animals forget their differences and band together to fight injustice and inequity. The teamwork,
co-operation and commitment to excellence was evident in the quality of the production. JSL Year 3 students put on an amazing performance of the Dutch traditional tale “Vrouwtje van Stavoren” – or, The Lady of Stavoren. This well-loved story tells the tale of a wealthy lady who lived in the prosperous harbour town of Stavoren in the Middle Ages, and wanted to find the most precious object in the world. The children had learned about the story as part of their topic on European countries and were very excited to be able to act and sing it out to their audience. Every child spoke, sang and danced with real enthusiasm, and they all put together a really enjoyable and accomplished show.
Insight Summer 2017
The BSN’s reputation for nurturing acting talent continues to grow after Year 13s performed their exam pieces with great depth of character. First up was an excerpt from Playhouse Creatures by April de Angelis, which required all four actresses to take on the roles of strong feisty females trying to survive in the harsh world of the 17th Century theatre business. There were some wonderful comic moments, excellent delivery and accents! As each character faced their fate it was done with beautiful poignancy. After a quick scene change, the audience were treated to the students’ own imaginatively devised piece. Audience members were asked to stand around the actors throughout and be involved, giving the performance an extra intensity. The showcase was an opportunity for the students to perform their pieces before being examined. With great characterisation and polished performances the examiner was in for a treat.

Day 2 Athletics
COBIS Senior Games 2017 After seven months of intensive training the time arrived for the COBIS Games squad to head to Sheffield, UK and compete in the COBIS Senior Games. Here’s a round-up of the three days.
Day 1 Swimming The competition was tough, with some outstanding swimmers from other schools and the team battled their way
30
through the heats. Morgann De Jong and Syazmin Shahasir made it through to the 50m individual breaststroke finals and performed excellently but sadly just missed out on a medal. Similarly, Callum Lochhead made it through to the 50m individual backstroke finals and achieved a personal best time! The girls’ medley relay team and the girls’ freestyle relay team both made it through to the finals and both teams achieved a personal best time! Overall, by the end of the day – the BSN placed a respectable 10th place out of 27 schools.
This was the squad’s strongest event and they turned up determined! Mateo Mouanda received a gold medal for his triple jump performance and broke the COBIS games record with a huge jump of 9.90m! Next was the girls’ 400m race with Giulia Alippi who received a silver medal after winning her heat and battling it out in the finals. Julie Vergoosen won the gold in the girls’ discus and Noortje Mol won the gold in the girls’ shot put – both incredible throws! Morgann de Jong won her 100m heat by a mile and just missed out in the final by a few milliseconds and came 4th. However, she won the silver in long jump with a massive jump of 4.38m and a bronze in the girls’ 800m race. The boys’ relay
the gold! Julie Vergoosen had an excellent start pulling away from the crowd, followed by Syazmin Shahasir building up speed in the 2nd leg, then Sara Graeber took the lead in the third leg around
the bend and Morgann de Jong powered down the finish to win the race! Overall, the BSN achieved 2nd in athletics out of 27 schools! A fantastic achievement!
Day 3 Football The boys played six outstanding games to win their group and move onto the quarter finals. They comfortably beat Dubai College 4-0 to move to the semi-finals. Unfortunately, the flamboyancy and skill of the Spanish team outdid us and the boys placed a respectable 4th out of 27 teams! The girls had a rough start to the day and came 5th in their pool. However, they pulled it back, displaying their sheer determination and won the remainder of their games in the round robin tournament. All the COBIS Games students should be incredibly proud of their achievements. The commitment and hard work the students have shown over the last seven months sets them apart as outstanding athletes. The students have had a fantastic trip and made life long memories. The team bond and spirit between the students throughout the games was inspiring. The team placed an impressive 6th overall out of 27 schools – a fantastic result!
