Around the World in 80 Days Ben (Chorus)

by Eloïse and Theo This year’s Year 7 school production was “Around the World in 80 Days”. It is about a gentleman named Phileas Fogg who placed a bet with his friends that he could go around the world in 80 days. Before he departs, he finds a French servant who wants

“It was very well pieced together, it looked as though the parents enjoyed it. It was fun to be able to see it from the perspective of the audience and the actors.” Paige (Detective Fix)

obstacles that threaten to make him lose 20,000 pounds. Another thing that slowed him down was Detective Fix who was sure that Fogg had stolen 55,000 pounds from the Bank of England. He also makes new friends and finds his future wife during the journey. The main characters are of course Mr. Fogg and his servant Passepartout, Fogg’s ‘soon to be’ wife, Aouda and Detective Fix from Scotland Yard. We interviewed the actors about how the play went and about the characters.

The Work

Every student contributed to the play. It started at the auditions before Easter. Each person who wanted a speaking part had to audition and perform a paragraph (that was practised in Drama Club and at home) in front of the teachers who oversaw the play. The teachers then decided on who was best for what role. Even the people who didn’t want a speaking part took part, they sang and volunteered to make props. A lot of effort was put into this production by not only the students but also teachers who offered their own time during and after school to rehearse each scene more than once to get everything as good as it could be.

An Insider’s Perspective

In Drama lessons we practised multiple techniques that were also used in the play like voice projection and singing warm-ups to name a few. In Drama Club we practised lines and positions on stage. We also read through the whole script multiple times to form an overview of what happens. On The Night

On the evening of the production, everyone arrived half an hour before the play, to perfect every aspect of every scene. Eventually, the play got started, and it went seamlessly. Everyone got a huge round of applause after it finished. It was so popular even some SSV students came.

Leiden made cheesy garlic bread to start with (which was created by Adrian), then blue cheese and spinach pasta for the main dish was made by Archie and Alec. Ending with tiramisu created by Fidelis for dessert. The judges for this year’s Masterchef competition were Mr. Brooks (who is a teacher at ISH) and Mrs. Ulrich (who is a teacher at JSL). They enjoyed the meals quite a lot, and the student chefs were able to taste their own cooking as well as their friends. In the end after an agonising wait during the judging process, Gouda won, with the other 3 houses close behind them. The winners earned a handful of candy as well as a certificate proving that they has won the Masterchef competition.

SSL's first House Day by Emma and Yuri On Friday 5th of April we enjoyed our first House day at SSL! The house captains of Leiden, Amsterdam and Delft prepared a fun filled morning with games, a quiz and an extremely successful bake sale. Games included Jenga, Twister, Outdoor chess, spekhappen (try and eat the marshmallows off the high rope), a table football tournament and many more! Also, with an incentive of earning 1 house point when you win a game against a member of a different house. A game that wasn’t in the incentive system is the Rock, Paper, Scissors! Competition, a series of matches (3 games for 1 match) until one remains – Teachers were allowed to participate against the students-- , sadly there wasn’t a prize for the winner, but for the winning house (Amsterdam) of the table football tournament, they earned 10 house points!

Amsterdam also prepared a bake sale that day. Students and teachers could bake and bring in what they baked, like brownies, muffins, cookies and cakes, and sold them for 50 cents each to raise money for Right to Play! Leiden made a University challenge style quiz, where the house teams (Amsterdam, Gouda, Leiden and Delft) selected a team of four to represent their house. Leiden's house captains, Archie and Tomasz, got help from teachers for questions and acted as the quiz masters, while an individual from each house created their own buzzer using their Microbit. The winner of the quiz was Leiden who earned 20 house points, Gouda followed, earning 15 house points. Amsterdam came in third, earning 10 house points. Then finally Delft earned 5 house points.

BSN vs. Thomas's Battersea School by Paige On Friday the 3rd of May the Thomas’s Battersea school arrived in the Netherlands to compete against the BSN (British school in the Netherlands). Students from Year 5 to year 7 went head to head against the Thomas’s Battersea in many different sports. They played Ultimate frisbee and basketball on Friday and the BSN ended up in second place. On Saturday the participants played tag rugby, hockey and football. Later that day the students enjoyed the lunch that the parents had put together. The two schools mingled and held conversation while eating. In the end the Thomas's Battersea students made it to first place once again, but they did not leave without giving the BSN three cheers and one for good luck!

Issue 3: What couldn't make it to print Unfortunately, our reporters simply didn't have time to write articles for every event in the summer term. Sports day, the Outdoor Valley trip, the STEM project and wellness day during activities week all happened too close to publication date to be included. From all of the newspaper club, have a great summer holiday!
