Aims of the course

IWelcome to the Year 9 German course which helps prepare students for the GCSE course in Years 10 and 11. We will continue with the online Pearson Studio course which gives students constant access to the student book, listening files and online tasks.

Details of the course

In Stimmt! 3 Rot students are introduced to in-depth vocabulary to promote greater levels of achievement and linguistic competence. The vocabulary reflects the world pupils live in, using contexts familiar to them in their everyday lives and teaching them the vocabulary that they need to communicate with young German peers on topics that interest and stimulate them. They are introduced to young German people and given insight into the everyday life and culture of Germany and other German-speaking countries, encouraging intercultural understanding.

Grammar and vocabulary

Pupils will be taught to: ●

l Identify and use tenses or other structures which convey the present, past, and future as appropriate to the language being studied.

l Use and manipulate a variety of key grammatical structures and patterns, including voices and moods, as appropriate.

l Develop and use a wide-ranging and deepening vocabulary that goes beyond their immediate needs and interests, allowing them to give and justify opinions and take part in discussion about wider issues.

l Use accurate grammar, spelling and punctuation.

Linguistic competence:

Pupils will be taught to: ●

l Listen to a variety of forms of spoken language to obtain information and respond appropriately.

l Transcribe words and short sentences that they hear with increasing accuracy. l Initiate and develop conversations, coping with unfamiliar language and unexpected responses, making use of important social conventions such as formal modes of address.

l Express and develop ideas clearly and with increasing accuracy, both orally and in writing.

l Speak coherently and confidently, with increasingly accurate pronunciation and intonation.

l Read and show comprehension of original and adapted materials from a range of different sources and provide an accurate English translation of short, suitable material.

l Read literary texts in the language to stimulate ideas, develop creative expression and expand understanding of the language and culture.

l Write prose using an increasingly wide range of grammar and vocabulary, write creatively to express their own ideas and opinions, and translate short written text accurately into the foreign language.

How will the course be assessed?

Differentiated Stimmt! 3 Rot is written for those pupils focused on progressing as quickly as possible through the levels in Year 9 with the target of working at level 7 by the end of the book. Formative assessment in the form of online tasks with feedback provides students with regular feedback and there is summative formal assessment Unit by Unit in all four skills each term.

Wider learning: The Stimmt! 3 Rot Workbook is made available and online platforms as Quizlet and Kahoot are used for wider and more diversified learning.

Enrichment German

The enrichment course will continue to focus on deepening the understanding of the grammatical structures needed to reach a higher level 8-9 for the year 10 and 11 GCSE preparations. Added to this the students will be working on German literature to widen their communicative competence. A book list for further reading will be handed out in the course.
