2013 Welcome to the Birmingham School of Architecture end of year celebrations in what is our last time at Gosta Green before we move into our new home in Eastside. It’s been a very exciting year in the School with some fantastic work at both Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels and a real sense of community and pride within our staff and students. We are delighted to announce the appointment of Professor Christian Frost to the School in the capacity of Director of Cultural Context. The post was made possible by the incredible generosity of alumnus Dr. Albert Hong who has sponsored the Professorship in the name of former Head of School, Oscar Naddermier. Our Co-Lab projects lead by Alessandro Columbano have gone from strength to strength with students having opportunities to work on projects including re-imagining
the Tectons at Dudley Zoo, refurbishing one of the School’s first ever live projects from the 1960s at the Stonehouse Gang, and working alongside Ash & Lacy building products to develop aluminium façade systems. All of these opportunities, along with a number of paid mentoring schemes supported by BCU’s Centre for the Enhancement of Learning and Teaching put the School at the forefront of industry engagement and student employability. We are also delighted to have announced that we have launched a new Masters course, the MA Zero Carbon Architecture and Retrofit Design which will be lead by Professor Lubo Jankovic and we also have plans to relaunch our MA Urban Design course. There are certainly exciting times ahead! I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of our supporters. We have incredibly generous support
from a number of people, practices, businesses, and organisations who help make the School what it is. There are too many to name here but our End of Year Review will contain a complete list. Particular thanks must go to Willmott Dixon for their assistance in allowing our students to visit our new building whilst it has been under construction and to Network Rail for allowing our students to visit the redevelopment of New Street Station, both fantastic opportunities. I hope that you enjoy the work on display and take the opportunity to network with staff, students and colleagues from the profession.

Co.LAB
Co.LAB is a cross-disciplinary architecture & design initiative within the Birmingham School of Architecture. We focus on ‘live’ projects where our students and staff engage with real clients, delivering outcomes across a range of scales and formats. The initiative has expanded considerably with the recruitment of five graduate mentors, ten new projects, launch of the new website and featuring in numerous articles including BD Online, Architect’s Journal and Arch Daily. This year students from both undergraduate and postgraduate students from Architecture and Landscape students participated in a number of projects with further collaborations with students from BA (hons) Fashion Textile and BA (hons) Art & Design. What We Do Co.LAB Module {part of the undergraduate and postgraduate architecture teaching programme} Co.LAB Office {the collective structured organization running Co.LAB} Co.LAB Projects {the portfolio of ‘live’ projects undertaken within or outside the teaching curriculum} Co.LAB Space {a co-working place between the school of architecture, off site, and the city} Co.LAB Events {an annual festival of collaborative projects with the school and local practices} find us online: w: brimingham-colab.org fb: facebook.com/birmingham.colab tw: bham_colab bl: http://liveprojectsnetwork.org/

The Challenge of Live Projects by Jordanna Holton, Year 2 BA (Hons) Architecture student excerpt taken from Co.LAB module submission “As architecture students we are provided with projects that often deal with the initial parameters of design briefs – a list of requirements that we are expected to meet in order to achieve the project outlines. What is the budget? Who is the client? What is the purpose of the project? All of these issues are often answered within our project briefs – we design for the imaginary client that right from the word go have a clear intention, strictly adhering to their original ideas. The imaginary client is essentially perfect – often with loose budgets and even looser conceptual framework. This is where live projects significantly differ from the standard studio project – we deal with real clients, real situations and real budgets. Every aspect of the design has to be considered, justified and rationalized – and even then, after so many adjustments have been made to meet original requirements, the client or the economic situation of the project can change and drastically alter all of your best laid plans. Take, for example, a cushion for a seating structure. Myself and two other students were given the task of creating cushions for a cinema-style rake. Within the design studio realm such a task would have been relatively simple – select appropriate materials and methods with clear justification, and then
decide on qualities and quantities of the product. The live project, however, made this a much more difficult task. Over the space of 3 weeks the design restrictions shifted and altered so much that the final outcome will no doubt be entirely different from our original intentions; the shape, size, quantity and quality have all been compromised several times. Retaining concepts also proves to be quite difficult in live projects, when budget, construction, or health and safety restrictions mean that the idea you have consistently followed is no longer viable. Live projects were a shock to most second year students, used to the relative stability of studio design. But they both have their benefits, and both teach us fundamental skills in design culture. University studio projects often push our creativity to the limit and can challenge our perceptions of art and design, whilst live projects remind us to be grounded and learn to adapt to changing climates (of economy, relations and project intentions). Both aid our development, resulting in a much greater understanding of our roles as designers.”
PG Dip ARCHITECTURE (RIBA Pt.III)
The updated Part III course came on-line in September 2012 and it continues the success of the previous version by attracting students from across the country from Cambridge to Manchester. Split equally between academic study and analysis of practical experience and structured to fit in with the demands of practice workloads, the course is excellent preparation for entry to the profession.

RESEARCH/PRACTICE
Academic staff and students at the school continue to develop their research interests in areas of material innovation, sustainable technology, humanities and architectural pedagogy. Activities are organised around two centres of research: 1. Academic :: wellbeing/ political space/ urban futures/ architectural pedagogy 2. Practice :: zero-carbon/ collaborative practice/ social mobility/ urban transformation and artistic thinking. A selected overview of recent research activities this year: • • • • • •

Zero Carbon Architecture and Retrofit Design MA From September 2013, the School of Architecture is pleased to announce the launch of a new MA Zero Carbon Architecture and Retrofit Design. The new course is a result of the significant contribution Prof. Lubo Jankovic has made in the area of zero-carbon design and retrofit. This course develops a new type of professional, educated to rise to the challenges of climate change, and can deliver both new and retrofit design for zero carbon buildings or facilitate their procurement and approval. The course unifies design with technical, social and economic aspects of building performance. It is an extension to a career of an architect, whilst engaging with other related disciplines so as to provide a holistic combination of multidisciplinary skills.
