Welcome to the Birmingham School of Architecture
Welcome to the Birmingham School of Architecture end of year celebrations which are being held in our new home at Parkside for the first time. The new building has added an extra dimension to the School with greater transparency and connections to other courses in the Faculty, better facilities, and a design which encourages new ways of working including the use of informal breakout spaces. Our new spaces have engendered a new studio culture in many of our students, resulting in some very exciting work at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, whilst the new workshops have given rise to even more model making and experimentation through making. This year we also had our RIBA validation visit which resulted in unconditional validation for Parts 1, 2 and 3, with the School receiving four commendations for best practice and distinctiveness. Part of this distinctiveness is an enhanced relationship with practice which is characterised by the incredible number of practitioners who support our tutorials and design reviews, our M.Arch Teaching Practices, and for the first time, practices who supported a work placement scheme for our second year BA students. Almost 50 practices support this initiative ranging from local and regional practices, large and small, to renowned practices in London such as Stanton Williams, MAKE, AHMM, and Hawkins Brown. We hope to get the same support next year, and also plan to extend the scheme for our BA Landscape students. This year also witnessed the launch of our MA Zero Carbon Architecture and Retrofit Design course led by Professor Lubo Jankovic which promises to play a significant role in the future of the School and the wider profession. I’m also delighted to announce that we have recently validated a new course MA Conservation of the Historic Environment led by Professor Christian Frost which will focus on the theoretical and practical aspects of conservation architecture whilst offering IHBC accreditation. This coming year will also see a revamped BA Landscape Architecture programme and the relaunch of our MA Urban Design course. It’s certainly an exciting time at the Birmingham School of Architecture. At the end of this academic year Professor Jim Low will retire after over 20 years of service to the Birmingham School of Architecture and University. In his former capacities of Head of School and also Dean of the Built Environment, Jim’s influence on the School is palatable, having also been instrumental in its survival in more difficult times. Jim will be back as a visiting tutor next year but leaves full time service with our deepest gratitude. I would also like to thank those people, practices, businesses, and organisations for their continued and generous support this year and for helping make the School what it is, a regional centre for Architecture and Landscape, and a key part of those professional and social communities. I hope that you enjoy the work on display and take the opportunity to network with staff, students and colleagues, and now that the industry is in full recovery, recruit our students to work with you and continue their professional development. Thank you. Professor Kevin W Singh RIBA FFB SBID FRSA Head of School

The New Meriden The New Meriden, the active landscape of Castle Bromwich, is the blue print for a perpetually sustainable landscape and an environmentally responsible infrastructure. This project extrapolates existing technologies into programmatic, tectonic and environmental concerns for the New Meriden. This speculative project embraces proposed diversions of the River Thame to the production of hydro energy in order to power and sustain the New Meriden as an active infrastructure and to aid Leisure, social engagement, Observstion and mobile structures of faith and worship. A public space that provides infrastructural links, food production and spaces to enable well-being. The old Meriden was steeped in history of christianic faith, I propose to incorporate mobile chapels in order to create this social cohesion. All programs of the New Meriden aim to create and extend social cohesion between two suburbs of Birmingham. Key Precedent: Parc des Iles by Ilex landscape architecture, June 2005
