An alphabet of reasons to love the Orchestra’s annual festival of fun. By Maria Blackburn
We’ve made our list, we’ve checked it twice and it has nothing to do with who’s been naughty or nice. It’s not one of those tiresome to-do lists so ubiquitous at this time of year; the holiday season already has too many of those. The list you’ll find here is an A to Z inventory of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s Holiday Spectacular, the annual fiesta of seasonal festiveness that blends music, dance, song and stories into one neat little present. Unlike that hideous sweater that Great Aunt Gertrude gave you, this holiday gift won’t need to be returned.

C
apitol Quartet, the vibrant saxophone ensemble and BSO
special guest who will perform such classic holiday tunes as “Winter Wonderland” and “Here Comes Santa Claus.” “The saxophone was originally intended as a classical instrument, but it came to be used in America as a jazz instrument as well,” says tenor saxophonist David Stambler. “This gives us a nice opportunity to put a jazzy spin on some Christmas favorites.”

opera singer who joins the show this year as a special guest soloist. Okulitch, who recently played the role of Sparrow in Washington National Opera’s production of Peter Grimes, first attracted national attention in 2002 on Broadway as Schaunard in Baz Luhrmann’s production of La Bohème. Reviews of his performances rarely fail to mention his sensitive bass-baritone voice and commanding stage presence.

ours, as in many, many, many of them. BSO musicians and
the Holiday Spectacular cast and crew members spend 10 to 12 hours per day in rehearsals during the week leading up to the show’s premiere.

Designer Gregory Hill is mum on the details but we did get him to ’fess up to how many Santas fit in the 40-foot-wide Santatizer. “It houses at least 20 slim Santas or about 10 bowl-filled-with-jelly Santas,” he says.

resent. Callaway has a gift for Holiday Spectacular audiences: an original song they’ll help her create about what makes the holidays in Baltimore special. These improvised songs are a signature part of her live shows and she’s looking forward to hearing what the crowd comes up with and performing it with the BSO. “The humor that’s in the song is usually pretty outrageous,” she says. Now then, what rhymes with “sauerkraut?”

eindeer puppets leaping through the audience and onto
the stage. Artist Barbara Thompson says when she made the puppets featured in the “’Twas the Night Before Christmas” number, she was going for a “soft and huggable” look and a cartoon style. The puppets are made out of yarn, cardboard, foam and wood and are surprisingly heavy. So to make sure the pairs of reindeer sail 10 to 12 feet overhead, their handlers balance them on a wooden rod that rests in a belt they wear around their waists.

ery tight space. Once you pack 100 musicians and performers, eight not-so-tiny reindeer, a bunch of Santas and the rest of the production on the Meyerhoff stage, there’s no extra room. Baltimore Symphony Orchestra 2009-2010 Season
Marin Alsop, GRANT LEIGHTON
Music Director
Hailed as one of the world’s leading conductors for her artistic vision and commitment to accessibility in classical music, Marin Alsop made history with her appointment as the 12th music director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra. With her inaugural concerts in September 2007, she became the first woman to head a major American orchestra. She also holds the title of conductor emeritus at the Bournemouth Symphony in the United Kingdom, where she served as the principal conductor from 2002 to 2008, and is music director of the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music in California. In 2005, Ms. Alsop was named a MacArthur Fellow, the first conductor ever to receive this prestigious award. In 2007, she was honored with a European Women of Achievement Award, in 2008 she was inducted as a fellow into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and in 2009 Musical America named her “Conductor of the Year.” A regular guest conductor with the New York Philharmonic, The Philadelphia Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra and Los Angeles Philharmonic, Ms. Alsop also appears frequently as a guest conductor with some of the most distinguished orchestras around the world. In addition to her performance activities, she is also an active recording artist with award-winning cycles of Brahms and Barber orchestral works. Ms. Alsop attended Yale University and received her master’s degree from The Juilliard School. In 1989, her conducting career was launched when she won the Koussevitzky Conducting Prize at Tanglewood, where she studied with Leonard Bernstein.

EDWARD PATEY AND EDWARD HOFFMAN share more than just a first name. They’re both military veterans, they both like to run and they both have a lifelong love of music. But the biggest thing Patey and Hoffman have in common is their friendship. Violinist Patey (right) and trumpeter Hoffman (left) have played in the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra for a combined 69 years. Patey, 69, joined the BSO in 1968 after spending three years playing piccolo in the U.S. Army. Hoffman, 65, came to the BSO from the North Carolina Symphony in 1981. For the last few decades, they’ve shared the stage and a locker room, toured the world with the BSO and made each other laugh. (Their well-oiled comedy stylings go something like this: Asked about when their friendship started, Hoffman deadpans, “We’ve never been friends.” Patey, ever the straight man, agrees. “No never,” he says, shaking his head.) Given the fact that Ed and Ed have shared so much over the years, it seems somehow fitting that they are retiring together, too. Holiday Spectacular will be their last concert with the BSO. The parting is bittersweet. “I’ll miss the camaraderie of playing in the BSO,” Patey says. “I’ve really enjoyed making great music here.” Hoffman agrees. “I’ve been happy here. Playing in a great orchestra with excellent musicians has been the treat of a lifetime.” Yet they’re also looking forward to the opportunities that retirement brings. Patey, who has completed a dozen marathons, hopes to devote more time to running. In addition, he’s thinking about writing a book about his experiences with the BSO. “I’ve collected a lot of interesting anecdotes over the years,” he says. Hoffman plans to continue teaching at the Peabody Conservatory and traveling to Hong Kong in the summer to coach trumpet students who play with the Asian Youth Orchestra. He also wants to spend more time painting, taking photographs and fly fishing. “My fishing friends can’t wait for me to retire,” Hoffman says. He pauses. “Neither can my colleagues.” He looks over at Patey and they share a laugh. —Maria Blackburn
