Sociology at Maryland

From job interviews to first dates to diplomatic meetings, social interactions shape our lives. At the Department of Sociology at the University of Maryland, we study the micro and macro, from family organization to globalization, to better understand how societies function.
B E S O C I AL
We discover new knowledge by conducting revealing interviews and analyzing massive data sets locally and around the world, using novel research methods. We inspire Maryland pride by directly serving local constituents and by leading national dialogues on critical social topics through centers and projects. We are transforming the student experience through life-changing study abroad experiences and by offering rich opportunities to research and intern at government agencies and institutions. We work with funding partners including the National Science Foundation, the Department of Defense and the National Institutes of Health to turn imagination into innovation through research and programs that help veterans returning from war, families struggling economically and disaster victims rebuilding their lives.

“ Once you study a social science, you just see the world differently. You bring more depth to whatever work you do. You have a skill that sets you apart in the way you perceive things. My background in sociology made me more marketable. Everything you learn in sociology can be applied to putting together a good news report or newscast.” MARÍA LETICIA GÓMEZ, SOCY ’93 Emmy Award-winning journalist; evening anchor, Univision affiliate KDTV, San Francisco
