This lecture on the great Irish poet will trace the development of his spiritual philosophy and describe how it drew upon influences from India, Japan and Arabia.

Suheil Bushrui is a distinguished author, poet, critic, translator and media personality, well known in the United States, Europe, and the Arab world. Widely recognized for his seminal studies in English of the works of W.B. Yeats and for his translations of Yeats’ poetry into Arabic, Professor Bushrui is also the foremost authority on the works of Kahlil Gibran. At present, Professor Bushrui – who holds the title of Research Professor Emeritus – is the Director of the George and Lisa Zakhem Kahlil Gibran Chair for Values and Peace, and Senior Scholar (Peace Studies) at the Centre for International Development and Conflict Management at the University of Maryland. Professor Bushrui’s publications are extensive in both English and Arabic; his work, particularly on Gibran, has been translated into several languages. In addition to his many books (in both Arabic and English), he is the author of numerous scholarly articles on topics such as Arabic and English literature, inter-religious understanding, intercultural communication, conflict resolution, and global issues. With Professor David Cadman he is the co-editor of Selected Speeches and Articles of His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales (University of Maryland, 2006), which he has translated into Arabic under the title Al Amir Yattahadath (Beirut: Al Saqi, 2010). His most recent publications are: Volume 2 of Selected Speeches and Articles by His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales: Harmony – A Crisis of Perception (co-edited with Professor David Cadman) (University of Maryland, 2009); The Spiritual Heritage of the Human Race (co-authored with Dr Mehrdad Massoudi) (Oxford: Oneworld, 2010); and its translation into Arabic under the title, Tourath al-Insaniyya al-Ruhi (forthcoming, 2011). He is also the author of the Temenos Academy Papers A Defence of Poetry (2000) and The Sacred in Literature (2010). He is a Fellow of the Temenos Academy.

Tom Durham is an actor with a particular interest in the performance of challenging poetry – soul acting – and has read many times for the Temenos Academy. His CD David Jones – A Selection from his Writing was issued by the Temenos Academy last year.
