BSOS Annual Update 2017-18

A Note from Dean Ball The College of Behavioral and Social Sciences (BSOS) at the University of Maryland is a premier institution of academics, instruction, research, innovation, community building and entrepreneurship. From every angle, across our many disciplines, BSOS students, faculty, staff, alumni and partners address the critical issues of our times—from the root causes of racism and poverty, to climate change and food scarcity, to economic and social injustices. Leveraging our unique location in the D.C. metro area, BSOS engages in national and international dialogues on critical societal challenges and solutions, and influences meaningful change through federal faculty appointments

The College of Behavioral and Social Sciences is home to 10 diverse, interdisciplinary departments and many programs, all committed to investigating and improving the human condition. Spotlight on Students Fostering Student Leadership Meet Feyikemi Ajayi, SOCY Senior Sociology major Feyikemi Ajayi spent a semester studying abroad in Pau, France. There, she volunteered as an English teaching assistant at local elementary and high schools. Feyikemi has made the most of her college experience by getting involved on campus; she worked as a research assistant in the Children of Color Lab in the Department of African American Studies, and is a part of the Maryland Crew.

Through the Dean’s Student Advisory Council (DSAC) and the Dean’s Graduate Student Advisory Council (GDSAC), BSOS fosters student engagement and activism. Members of DSAC and GDSAC— which are composed of representatives from each department—advise Dean Ball, Associate Dean Katherine Russell and BSOS senior leadership on the issues that matter most to our students. BSOS Ambassadors assist with event planning and community-building efforts.

University Career Center @ BSOS To help students gain career readiness skills and experiences that will assist them after graduation, the College and the University Career Center & The President’s Promise established the University Career Center @ BSOS. Staff members create customized career exploration resources and develop programs aligned with the College’s priorities, and also integrate career development into the academic experience. The Center also coordinates and supports exploration and networking events for students in departments and across the College: go.umd.edu/UCCBSOS.

After completing her undergraduate degree, Feyikemi aspires to work at the U.S. Census Bureau. She also is considering becoming involved in education reform. “I see myself as a lifelong learner, always asking questions and open to learning about different cultures and people,” Feyikemi said.
