While living on residence there may be times when you are required to communicate something to staff members that has annoyed/frustrated you. This may be a maintenance issue that hasn’t been fixed, reporting actions of other residents that have caused concerns, or even getting an update of what fees you owe. As it is outlined in the handbook, as well as just being courteous, it is important to use appropriate language when communicating with residence staff members and students. Often there is more to a story than what you know, or you may have had incorrect information accidentally passed onto you based on rumours. Particularly when you are communicating via email or any other written form, choose your words very carefully. Once you have sent an email, you cannot take it back. Make sure you have the full story before using words or phrases such as “incompetence” or “failure to complete your job”. If you are not prepared to say something directly to the manager’s face, I would strongly advise against putting those words in an email. We have a 24 hour reception at Burwood Student Residences, so it may be better to double check in person what is going on, rather than sending off an abusive email. If something “hasn’t been working for three weeks” but the office staff were not informed of it, then it is near impossible for us to rectify the situation as we do not know about it. Issues such as no hot water are often caused by a malfunction with a boiler. When this happens we get it assessed and fixed as quickly as possible. Sometimes things outside out control happen, such as the power surge on Sunday night, which then cause things to malfunction and stop operating as they should. We will not know about this once again until it is reported. The office staff will endeavour to keep you informed of progress of different works as much as we can. Sometimes we are reliant on contractors for repairs or to order parts which can create delays. While these delays are unfortunate, they are also beyond our control. Delays can be caused through waiting for contractors, through delays of residence staff and also through the residents not reporting issues. All maintenance issues need to be reported via a work request online. If you feel that the works have not been completed in an acceptable timeframe, please contact reception in person or send a constructive email asking for an update. It is an expectation that all residence staff treat all students and student matters with respect and courtesy, we also expect the same from residents.

At Burwood Student Residences, we like to reward residents who are regularly making a positive contribution to the Res community. For the month of May, this coveted award goes to the indomitable Lauren Hajro! Congratulations Lauren, you now stand as a paragon of the Res Community through your tireless efforts in the battle to keep Res clean and running like the well-oiled machine that it is. For this Res thanks you! As usual, prizes will be delivered in the mail.

This is just an early reminder that during Study Week and Exams (5pm Friday 29th May – 5pm Friday 19th June) there is a Noise, Guest and Alcohol Free period on Res. This can be a stressful time for some students and we like to make sure everyone has the best opportunity for academic success. During this time there are no guests allowed and no loud noise at any time of the day, not just after 11pm. This means that parties and alcohol are not permitted on res during this time. We will have more information in the following weeks, but please speak to your RL or a staff member if you have any questions.
