Burwood Lunar Chinese New Year Celebration
28 JANUARY Celebrate the Lunar Chinese New Year with Deakin!! Come and enjoy the free Chinese New Year snacks and experience cultural activities, including Chinese calligraphy, friendship bracelet making, Chinese board games, dice games, traditional decorative paper cutting, wishing tree and lucky Buddha! We have also invited the performers from Chinese Youth Society of Melbourne to present the Lion Dance show!

Pride March 2016 31st January
On Sunday 31 January 2016, Midsumma Pride March will celebrate it's 21st Anniversary and Deakin University will be there to show our colours, our pride and our support for the LGBTIQ community. Once again, we'll have the colourful Deakin car as part of the march. We want to get a big group of staff and students together to March behind the Deakin banners. It’s getting close to that time again!!! No matter when you plan on checking out, you MUST leave your room/studio apartment in a clean and tidy state. For those at BSV and the MB Shared Apartments, you will not only be responsible for cleaning your bedroom, but communal areas as well. Please see your RL for details on cleaning expectations.
If your room is left dirty or if you do not contribute to the cleaning of common areas, charges will apply and an encumbrance will be placed on your Deakin account. You will not be able to access your results or re-enrol until the charges are paid.
Report any damage/maintenance issues in your room. Any damage in units common areas will have the costs charged to EVERYONE in the unit should the person that caused the damage not come forward.
*Make sure your room/studio apartment is in a clean state. *ND NOT USE MB BIN CHUTES for large quantities of rubbish or any items that will block the chute. Please see a staff member and they will give you access to the rubbish room *Place any clean clothes/linen you would like to donate in the Salvation Army bins in the MB bike storeroom *Return your swipe card (and unit key for BSV). Failure to do so will result in additional charges
*Finalise your account. Make sure there aren’t any outstanding amounts owing. *Check your mail before you leave. Any uncollected mail will be returned to sender. *Check out is on the 8th February for those on 50 week leases unless you have organised an extension with reception. For all other residents, checkout will be on the 22nd February . No later that 10am. You will be charged an additional $50 for every hour after.

GMHBA FAMILY RIDE 29 January 5PM* Free Event The GMHBA Family Ride provides mums, dads, aunties, uncles, next door neighbours and kids the opportunity to ride a closed section of the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road course along the Eastern Beach waterfront with Cadel, and experience the thrill of riding through the Start/Finish gantry, a truly unique family experience. “In most cases we are the product of our upbringing, so to enjoy exercise and activity together as a family is so important for setting kids off on the path toward a healthy lifestyle.” — Cadel Evans
Come down on Friday the 29th of January and promote the benefits and enjoyment of being active as a family – while creating some lifetime memories in the process. Registrations are now open and the first 500 entries receive a free GMHBA Family Ride t-shirt.

Deakin University is a smoke-free environment. This includes all Deakin property, including: all land, buildings, vehicles, facilities and other property owned or leased by or under the control of the University. This policy has been implemented to create a healthy and safe environment for all Deakin stu-
dents, staff and associates. Residences however, carpark 13 and the basketball court. Residents may smoke in this area and ONLY this area. Residents found smoking outside of this areas will incur a fine and/or disciplinary action. Please be considerate of fellow residents down at the village when using the
smoking area and keep the noise levels to a minimum, especially during the night time .
The smoke detectors on res are incredibly sensitive and directly linked to the fire brigade. The resident responsible for a fire unit(s) calls out shall be liable for the cost and in cases where no individual is identified the Residence manager reserves the right to apportion the cost across all the residents of the unit involved. If ever you hear the evacuation tones, DO NOT assume it is a false alarm. You MUST VACATE IMMEDIATELY. The evacuation meeting points are: Up on the grass out the front of Building LA (MB guests) Gardener’s Creek (BSV guests)

CHEDDAR AND GREEN CHILLI STUFFED SWEET POTATOES
INGREDIENTS 4 (200g each) small orange sweet potatoes 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 green onions, thinly sliced 1 long green chilli, finely chopped 1/2 cup finely grated cheddar Sour cream, to serve
METHOD Step 1 Preheat oven to 200C/180C fan-forced. Place potatoes on a baking tray. Drizzle with oil. Season with salt and pepper. Bake for 45 minutes or until tender. Set aside for 5 minutes to cool slightly. Increase oven temperature to 220C/200C fan-forced. Step 2 Cut 1cm, horizontally, off tops of potatoes and discard. Holding 1 potato with a tea towel, scoop out centre flesh, leaving a 1cm border. Place flesh in a bowl. Repeat with remaining potatoes. Mash flesh with a fork. Season with salt and pepper. Stir in onion, chilli and ½ the cheddar. Spoon filling into potatoes. Sprinkle with remaining cheese. Step 3 Return potatoes to baking tray. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes or until heated through. Serve with sour cream. 11
