Trivia & Multi-Cultural Food Night Come to the MB Rec Room TOMORROW (Thurs the 8th of Jan) from 6pm to approximately 10pm for a night of trivia fun!

You can indulge in a series of different cultural foods whilst partaking in a series of Australian Trivia Questions!

It will be a very relaxed vibe and great way to meet some of the new international students who have just arrived and are staying on res for the next few weeks. All residents welcome!


DVDs, Board Games and Sports Gear Want to watch a movie? Play some Monopoly or kick a soccer ball? Come to resi reception! We have a variety of DVDs, board games and sporting equipment to borrow from the office. Just bring your Deakin Student Card to leave with us until you return the items.

Keep it Clean! Deakin University employs cleaning staff to clean all apartments within the residences (once a week for studios and twice a week for shared apartments). Throughout the period of occupancy the resident is responsible for maintaining their room at a standard of cleanliness and tidiness acceptable to the Campus Residence Manager.

In order to adhere to these health, hygiene and safety requirements, residents are NOT permitted to refuse the cleaners entering their apartment at any time—whether this be communicated verbally or with a sign on your door. Apartments left in an unhygienic condition are a health and safety risk so the residences management team reserves the right to make any intervention deemed necessary to return a unit to an appropriate level of cleanliness. Residents who have concerns with cleaning should contact the Residences Office. 3


Guest Policy A guest is defined as a person who is invited to stay in your room overnight once approval has been sought from the Residences office. You must obtain approval for a guest by going to the reception desk and getting a Guest Pass form from reception.

The following restrictions on guests apply: 

A resident may apply to have one overnight guest three times a week

Any non-resident who is present without a guest pass after 11pm will be required to leave the residences and the resident responsible for that visitor will incur a $50 casual accommodation charge per person, per night.

All overnight guests must be registered with the administration office.

The guest is to stay in the room of the person who has signed them in, not just anywhere in the residences and not in the lounge or other common areas.

A particular guest may only stay in residences for three nights per week (beginning Monday and ending Sunday).

Residents are responsible for the proper conduct of their guests and accept financial responsibility should their guest damage residences or University property.

A ‘guest’ must be known to the resident.

Why have an overnight Guest Policy? 

Fire safety - in case of a fire we can track all potential occupants and to control the numbers who need access to fire safety exits in the case of an emergency

Security - any people staying on residences are known to at least one person who will take responsibility for their actions and can vouch for their movements.

Protect the privacy & comfort of residents - not everyone enjoys sharing their home with a, larger than necessary, group of people.

Recipe of the Week Roast vegetable, haloumi and rice salad Ingredients 2 cups brown medium grain rice  1 large eggplant, halved lengthways, cut into 2cm thick slices  1 red capsicum, cut into chunks

 1L Campbell's Real Stock Vegetable

 1/2 cup fresh oregano

 Cooking spray

 1 lemon

 3/4 cup pitted Sicilian olives

 250g haloumi, sliced

 1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil

 2 zucchini, thickly sliced  5 garlic cloves, sliced

Method 1. Place rice and stock in a large saucepan. Bring to the boil over high heat then reduce heat to medium and cook, covered, for 25 minutes or until cooked and stock has been absorbed. Remove from heat and stand, covered, for 5 minutes. Fluff up rice with a fork. 2. Meanwhile, preheat oven to 220C (200C fan-forced). Place eggplant, zucchini, capsicum, 2 sliced garlic cloves and ¼ cup oregano on a large oven tray. Drizzle with half the oil, season and toss to coat. Roast for 30 minutes or until tender. 3. Toss rice and roasted vegetables in a large bowl and arrange on a platter. 4. Peel rind from lemon in large strips. Juice the lemon. 5. Spray a large frying pan and put on medium heat. Cook rind, olives and remaining garlic and oregano, stirring for 3-4 minutes or until garlic is golden. Set aside with a slotted spoon. Cook haloumi in same pan over medium-high heat for 1-2 minutes each side or until golden. 6. Return olive mixture to pan with lemon juice and swirl pan to coat. Top rice salad with haloumi mixture, making sure you pour the pan juice evenly over the rice.
