EFTPOS machine now at reception We are happy to announce that our Resi Reception can now accept payments via credit card and/or EFTPOS cards! We can accept these payments over the phone or in person for your convenience.

Please note, some EFTPOS cards have a $500 or $1000 limit per day so you may need to pay your monthly fees in a few instalments. If this is the case, please allow a few extra days to ensure your payment is received before the due date. If a friend or a family member pays your resi fees, please let them know that they can now contact us directly to make a payment.

Intercampus Clash The Intercampus Clash is on Sunday 11th May in Geelong!

If you are interested in playing or spectating, please sign up at resi reception ASAP! At the time of registering, please specify if you are coming to play or spectate and whether you will require the bus.


Basketball Coach Needed! A basketball coach is needed for an Under 12 team!

They train on Fridays locally in Ashburton 3.45 -4.45 and play at Waverly Falcons stadium 10 minutes from campus, on a Saturday afternoon. Parents pay approximately $400 for the season. It is not a huge time commitment and they are all keen young players. Looking for someone who plays basketball and enjoys teaching and working with young boys. Needs a working with children check and it would be helpful if you have transport. If you are interested, please contact Kim: 0438553166

Resi Girls Football There will be a resi girls football match next Monday 5th May at Bennetswood Reserve. It will be starting at 4.30pm as we may be struggling with light towards the end of the game.

Grocery Deliveries If you have organised for groceries to be delivered to residences reception, please note that we can keep your delivery behind the desk like a normal parcel. We will, however, not refrigerate any of the groceries so please pick them up from reception as soon as you receive your notification email.

Reporting Maintenance Issues Despite our reception office operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, maintenance staff are only at res Mon-Fri, between 9am-5pm. If you require something in your room to be fixed, please submit your request as soon as possible in order for maintenance staff to address it during these business hours.

If you have an emergency maintenance issue outside of business hours, please still contact reception in order for us to assess the best possible action.

Film Competition! Are you an aspiring film producer or perhaps you just want to share your Deakin experience with the world?

Grab a camera or smart phone and show us your Deakin World. Great prizes to be won, plus the chance to have your film shown at the My Deakin World Film Festival on 1 September 2014 at Deakin Edge, Federation Square. Keeping Laundries Clean It is essential to keep your laundries tidy at all times. For the benefit of your fellow residents, please remove your clothes from the laundry as soon as you have finished washing and/or drying them. If clothes are left in laundries for too long, they will be removed and given away to charity!

Global Citizenship Awards The Global Citizenship Program is aimed at supplementing your studies at Deakin and involves a combination of different international activities such as:      

international study experiences participation in internationally focused units seminars on international topics international internships international-centred volunteering foreign language studies

Applications for the 2014 GCP Award will close on August 10. The award ceremony will be held in October before the Trimester 2 exams. If you’ve accumulated the 100 points, please get your application in now. If you are close to the required points, please keep an eye on the site, or Facebook for opportunities to gain those extra points. Drop-in Station: Study Support Time is flying! Trimester 1 is more than half over, and the work is flowing in fast! If you want to discuss your studies with an experienced student, or if you have questions about anything related to studying at Deakin, ask at the Students Helping Students Drop-In Station. Peer mentors at the Students Helping Students Drop-in Station pride themselves in helping other students, whether the issue is academic, practical or something else. Just go to the drop-in station at The Learning Space, Building H, Level 1 or contact a peer mentor online. DUSA DAY TRIPS Wilson's Promontory Wilson's Promontory is Victoria's natural wonderland. Located at the southernmost point of the Australian mainland, Wilson’s promontory is arguably the most loved national park in Victoria. When: Saturday 10th May Time: 7.30am Pick Up Where: Deakin University, Burwood Campus, Gate 1, Holland Street, car park area Cost: DUSA Gold/Silver: $85 All others: $105 Includes: All transport, picnic style lunch * You will need to have a reasonable level of fitness to enjoy the natural wonders on show. Please remember to bring a waterproof jacket, good walking shoes and money if you would like to purchase food and souvenirs.

Mornington Peninsula On this trip we head straight to Arthurs seat where you will have morning tea and take in the remarkable views of the Mornington Peninsula. We then visit a working strawberry farm, Cape Shank National park and then Mornington Peninsula hot springs. Volunteer Expo! Thinking of Volunteering? The Jobshop team is hosting Deakin's annual Volunteer Fair on Tuesday 6 May 12 - 2PM at The Atrium (outside Deakin Central and Caffeine). A huge range of non-profit organisations will be there on campus to talk to students about their volunteer opportunities. There will be something for every student! Volunteering is good for you and GREAT for your career! The feeling of making a positive contribution to your community is amazing, so grab a friend and come along to find out what opportunities are out there. Recipe of the Week One-pan chicken and chickpeas Ingredients (serves 4) 

4 (500g) chicken schnitzels (uncrumbed)

1 tablespoon olive oil

 2 tablespoons coarsely chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley leaves 

2 garlic cloves, crushed

3 green onions, sliced

400g can chickpeas, drained, rinsed

1/2 cup chicken stock

2 tablespoons lemon juice

80g baby rocket

Lemon wedges, to serve

Method 1. Combine chicken, oil, parsley and garlic in a glass or ceramic bowl. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes. 2. Heat a large frying pan over medium-high heat. Cook chicken, in batches, for 3 to 5 minutes each side or until browned. Transfer to a plate. 3. Add onion and chickpeas to pan. Cook for 2 minutes. Add stock and juice. Bring to the boil. 4. Return chicken to pan. Reduce heat to medium. Simmer for 5 minutes or until chicken is cooked through and chickpeas are heated. 5. Season with salt and pepper. Serve with rocket and lemon wedges.
