Congratulations to the Bowie State College 1972 Football team, coaches, and cheerleaders as they return to where it all began 50 years ago. As the chair of an outstanding group of administrators, staff, alumni, and friends, I am humbled and very pleased that this anniversary reunion is finally here. In order to get to this day and assemble a group who, in some cases, have not been back to campus and may not have seen each other in almost 50 years proved to be a labor of love that was worth every ounce of energy it took to bring this event to fruition. There is no way an event of this magnitude could happen without the support of more people than this space allows to mention, coming together to plan and execute a common vision and goal.

This reunion would not have gotten off the ground without the support of Mr. Brent Swinton, VP for Institutional Advancement, and Mr. Clyde Doughty, Jr., VP for Recreation and Athletics. They both believed that telling the story of our beloved alma mater is more than important but essential. They put the full force of their respective offices to work to make things happen, and we are forever indebted and grateful. My 50 year love affair with Bowie State began as a member of the 1972 football team. Subsequently, I got involved in student government, pledged Groove Phi Groove Social Fellowship, earned 2 degrees from Bowie and a third from George Washington University, and served as an adjunct instructor at Bowie, first in the history department and then in the college of education for 20 years. I then served as President of the Bowie State University National Alumni Association for 4 years, 2012 2016. Over these 50 years, I’ve had the pleasure of meeting hundreds of alumni and friends that know the value of Bowie State University and love it as I do. Today we celebrate a bit of our history as we commemorate and celebrate 50 Years of Football at Bowie State in the modern era.

Before players could take to the field in 1972, the school needed to hire a coach. Cleophus C. Hatcher, former head coach at Cheney State in Pennsylvania, was recruited to coach the team. BOWIE ST. POISED ON EDGE OF BIG FOOTBALL ADVENTURE

Reprinted by BSU Sports Hall of Fame 08/01/2022.

Bowie Staley Jackson is about to start on what he thinks of as a long adventure, perhaps a lifelong adventure. For over a year, Jackson has worked to organize, recruit, equip, and field a varsity football team at Bowie State College On Saturday, Bowie plays its first football game ever at Virginia Commonwealth “Everybody over here is on the edge of their seats I think I’m more excited than the fellows I can’t walk across campus without people stopping me to ask about the team,” he said Bowie State students have a right to ask the coach questions They are paying for the team. “The student activities fee was increased to finance the team,” says Jackson who was named Howard University’s athlete of the decade on graduating in 1965. Bowie students decided several years ago that the liberal arts college needed to improve its “male image.” It originally established its reputation as a school specializing in training women for elementary education. Because of Jackson’s recruiting, about 85 per cent of Bowie’s 60 man squad is freshman. During his year of setting up the football program, Jackson spent “one whole month talking to over 200 players. I sent letters to every Washington and Baltimore high school Every single one ” Consequently, there are many local starters: Robert Cross, Cardozo end; Don Williams, Dunbar back; Don Ball, DeMatha’s all metropolitan guard; Rusty Baker Bowie linebacker; Tom Kelsic, 280 pound Roosevelt tackle, and William Valentine, Eastern safety, among others BY THOMAS BOSWELL WASHINGTON POST STAFF WRITER

“Right now everything happy. We scrimmaged the Howard University freshmen and played them even. Our defense held them to almost no yardage And we moved the ball even though we didn’t throw a pass ” Does he hope Bowie will be as good as Howard when his freshman are seniors? “Weeeeeelll, something like that,” he confesses

“On top of that there are so many girls out here that even the guys on the last string have instant popularity I have to constantly be on the lookout, you know, to keep ‘em on a straight line It’s a lot of freshmen to handle If this all doesn’t work out,” Jackson concludes, “it won’t be because I haven’t worked as hard as I could I’m here at 8 a m and leave at 9 or 10 at night. Sometimes I look at an old well known coach and I wonder what this’ll all be in 10 or 15 years. Something to be proud of or a big bust. But I guess it’s too late to be thinking about that. I just have to keep truckin’.”

The coach is finding that his problems, instead of going away after all his work, are still increasing. “You work like hell to get ‘em in, and now you have to work like hell to keep ‘em in. That will be the key to our program keeping our players in school. I have to stay close on ‘em. Kids won’t tell you things are going bad. They’d rather quietly flunk out and disappear. You try to help them before they get in so deep nobody can pull them out.”
