Ball State introduces offcampus housing initative Ball State University announced the launch of a new off-campus quality housing initiative program, the goal aims to prioritize student welfare by highlighting property management companies and landlords who commit to an established set of practices related to off-campus.

New YMCA facility coming to Muncie Elijah Poe Summer Editor For the past 14 years, Hearts and Hands United has hosted the Tools for School drive. Each year thousands of families are helped throughout the event. Tools for School gives out school necessities such as shoes, backpacks, school supplies and jeans. Hearts and Hands United also partnered with Safari Dental to give out free teeth cleanings and dental screenings, as well as partnering with Open Door for free immunizations and $25 sports physicals. Tools for School started as nonprofit organizations, Christian ministries, Muncie Mission and more. Churches dropped off and took care of one class for grade school donations. Kay Walker, the president of Hearts and Hands United, said they stayed afloat with lots of hands, help and big hearts. The first years of the event were limited to around 200 children helped, last year they helped
1700-2000 children. This year it helped 1589 children. “We take donations from all over Delaware County,” Walker said. “We have a big fundraiser kickoff fundraiser in May, at Amazing Joe’s, and we’ve been doing that for 10 or 11 years. We work with people in the community that will donate and volunteer.” Al Holdren and his family have been involved for the last 13 years in Tools for School. He and his wife took over the shoe side (there is a backpack side as well) for Hearts and Hands United. “When my wife and I took over, we [would] do fundraising for about 75% of the shoes that are given away and then also organize that area,” Holdren said. “We just really take over that whole area for them as far as volunteers, funding, logistics and purchasing the shoes, the whole bit.” Holdren said the day of the event is so special because of all the work leading up to the event is able to be showcased. He said weeks before, there is already a constant shoe shopping focus at Walmart, with people looking for shoes about four times a week.
Holdren’s goal is to make it easier for parents in need so that they might not worry about getting the things like backpacks, school supplies and shoes. Heather Koons took over the social media accounts for Hearts and Hands United in June, this is her second year on the board for Hearts and Hands United as well. She said she was trying to get as many people out as possible for the event. She also did a lot of fundraising in trying to get the community involved.

The City of Muncie and the YMCA broke ground on a new facility on July 18. The project will be an addition to the McKinley-Whitely Live Learn Neighborhood project. I know there’s a need.” Koons started as a teacher at Headstart, a lowincome preschool program. The families there did not necessarily have all the money to get school supplies, shoes and backpacks. She said going to this event showed her and other families that children do not have to be embarrassed about coming to school without a backpack or wearing old shoes. “I just enjoy seeing the joy on the kids’ faces,” Koons said. “That is just the best part.” While talking about partnerships like those with Safari Dental and Open Door, Koons said it was vital that more organizations are added to make this event even bigger and better. For Walker, a big goal and necessity of the event is to fulfill children with their needs for the school year. She said if a child has basic necessities for the start of school they will prosper, they need the tools, and Tools for School wants to make sure they get those tools. “It makes your heart swell,” Walker said. “It makes your heart swell to see that there are so many
good people in our community, and we take care of one another and I think that’s what living in a community is about. It is taking care of one another, and realizing the needs of your fellow neighbor, friend, or employee. You realize those needs and we just all come together to make it happen.” Holdren said the event is a blessing. A blessing for the community and the volunteers. He said a lot of communities do not have this and it is great to see people stepping up and really care enough about their community to make it better. “That’s all we’re doing, we’re making a little corner of it [the community] better, but it’s our corner and we’re going to protect it and we’re going to do everything we can,” Holdren said. The Brown Family Amphitheater (top left) is near its completion, with the inaugural performance free concert by Don McLean Sept. 2. McLean is known for his songs “American Pie” and “Vincent.” The amphitheater includes a stage, dressing room, control room, and loading dock, among other production elements. Work also continued on the Cooper Science Complex (bottom right). The renovation will bring the 56-year-old building in line with Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards for green energy buildings. Ball State has received 18 LEED certifications for newly built or renovated buildings since 2010. Further revitalization of the former LaFollete Complex (bottom left) space also took place this summer. MADELYN MOORE, DN Madelyn Moore Reporter She stands at 5 feet, 6 inches tall, with a pounding heart. There’s a moment of silence. Counts are whispered. She breathes, then, drumsticks are flying. When the question of ‘who’s good?’ was on the table, students at the Music For All Summer Symposium, held June 24 through July 1 on the campus at Ball State University, were quick to turn their heads and look at Evey Arleth. They spoke not only about their admiration for her talent but for her connection with music. Arleth, from Portland, Michigan, wears the title “musician” proudly. “I have connected to music since I was young, especially because my father and brother are drummers as well,” she said. Arleth was taught the basics of drumming by her father, but as she aged, she began to “self-teach” with his guidance. “Evey is dedicated to practicing regularly and

it shows. She steadily gets better and better,” Josh Arleth said. Evey Arleth said improving while playing the snare feels like a reward or even an achievement. According to Drum Magazine, playing the snare requires patience and practice, which often prevents people from learning. Every detail matters even the way one holds the drumsticks. This never worried Evey Arleth. “The main objective of playing is simply to prove to myself and other people that I can achieve what I want to do,” she said. Arleth thought she began her drumming career with low self-confidence. Now, Arleth found herself playing extremely well in open-class Winter Guard International (WGI). An indoor competition, WGI is considered to be “prestigious,” Arleth said, and the experience introduced her to something new: selfactualization. She recognized her potential and found herself eager to continue her connection with music. She may have had something to prove,
but Arleth hoped to also “inspire people along the way” with her determination. Arleth not only spoke about her appreciation for music but the band camp itself. She believed coming to Music For All Summer Symposium gave her the opportunity to learn from musicians from other backgrounds. Being from a small town and school music program, she was thrilled to apply what she learned and push her peers to grow with her. “Just seeing how far I have come as a musician, performer, and person moves me to want to go further,” she said. Arleth doesn’t plan on making a career out of drumming, but she believes it is a major part of her life that will never leave. She hopes to teach drum lessons later in life so that she can push others to pursue their shared passion. “You do not have to come from big, to make it big,” she said. Addie Chester: How one small decision led to big achievements

Women’s golf announces schedule Zach Carter Reporter Since she was three years old, Addie Chester’s life was lived through the game of soccer. “I feel like as a kid, it’s just kind of what you’re good at,” she said. “If you’re good at something, you’ll keep doing it.” But when she was about to attend Delta High School, she was on the cusp of being done. “Anybody who’s played a sport for that long gets burnt out at different times,” she said. But it wasn’t just the fact that Chester was tired of running up and down the pitch or that she had been kicking a soccer ball since she could walk. So, what was it? It was what the sport had become and who she was playing with. “I was playing with Indiana Fire at the time, and they didn’t age switch,” she said. “So, the teams were by birth year now instead of by grade, so the team that I had been playing with for a really long time switched… It was just one of those things
where practice wasn’t super fun.” Still thinking of walking away, her parents thought it would be a good idea for her to play for Delta. Fast forward to now. Chester holds the Indiana record for most goals scored in a high school career and season, and she became the Eagles’ first Division One girls’ soccer player as she is now a sophomore athlete for the University of Louisville. But most recently, she helped the Indy Eleven, Indianapolis’s pro soccer team, become the 2023 USL Women League champions. Flying high with the Eagles The decision to join the Eagles girls’ soccer team became one of the main reasons that she stuck with the sport. To her, it helped that she did not have to worry about certain things that she did in club play. “I’d just show up to practice every day and hang out with my friends,” she said. “I just had fun and there was no stress.” But while she was “hanging out with her friends,” her ability to play the game at a high level never went away. In fact, she wasn’t just playing
well. Chester was dominating the competition. “Only being the athletic director for one year with Addie, I quickly witnessed how special of a student-athlete she is,” Delta athletic director Tilmon Clark said. “I’m not surprised by what Addie has accomplished because of her competitive drive along with her elite talent.” Chester scored 34 goals in her freshman season with Delta, which is tied for 27th in the state’s history. But she would only improve. She now holds the first, second, and third-place spots for most goals scored in a single season. Her junior season sits at the top with 59 goals. “Obviously, scoring goals is fun,” she said. All together, Chester holds the record for the most goals scored in a career with 201, 34 more goals than second place. But take away those records. Take away the fact that she had many accolades and accomplishments, including the Indiana Gatorade Player of the Year award she won as a sophomore. She credits the atmosphere around the Eagles for her success.

The Ball State Women’s golf announced their 23-24 schedule. The Cardinals are hosting two tournaments this season with one in Muncie and the other in Puerto Rico. Ball State is scheduled for 11 tournaments for the 23-24 season.

Friday night lights Looking ahead to Delaware County high school football Zach Carter Reporter The 2023 Delaware County high school football season is right around the corner as week one will begin August 18. While some teams are looking to continue with what they worked on last season, others are going to have new looks. But the three goals that are the most prevalent are making their school proud, being the best in the county, and making a run in the playoffs. Yorktown One season removed from their sectional championship season, the Tigers are looking to run it back. “For us, it’s just our goal [to win],” Yorktown head coach Mike Wilhelm said. “We want to win championships every year and when we don’t, we’re disappointed.” It is no secret that one of the Tiger’s best weapons graduated last year in Kolton Nanko. Nanko led the Tigers with 80.9 receiving yards per game and finished the season with 16 touchdowns. But starting quarterback senior Mason Moulton thinks that the team’s explosive offense will continue to shock their opponents. “I think we have a lot of athleticism and speed,” Moulton said. “I think we can just have a lot of fun and use a lot of big plays… [Those] plays are going to set the tone for our season and lead us to a lot of wins.”

Moulton finished last season with 19 touchdown passes and a 71.6 quarterback rating. Besides Mouklton, senior Jalen Thomas will be returning after a big season. Last season, Thomas led the team with 96.5 rushing yards per game and 18 touchdowns. To Wilhelm, both Moulton and Thomas will be the guys that set the bar for their teammates. “You want your best player [Moulton] to be your hardest worker and he is,” Wilhelm said. “I think everyone sees that and it’s his leadership… Jalen [Thomas] is the quiet guy who leads by example and I think he just does things the right way.” The Tigers will open week one at home as they will take on Anderson. Muncie Central Some of the biggest news of the off-season was the fact that the Bearcats were getting a new turf field and a new stadium. To second-year head coach Kyle Padgett, the team is ready to show why they deserved the upgrade. “The community’s excited about things and they’re buying into the kids,” he said. “ I told the kids, they’re investing in us. Now it’s time for you to invest in yourselves both on and off the field and go out there and put out a good product.” Last season, the Bearcats went 4-6 overall, with a 4-3 record in conference play. That is the best Muncie Central record since the 2016 season. “They proved that they believe in themselves and believe in what we’re doing,” Padgett said. “And I think that kind of led to what our offseason has been because we had a really good offseason.” But the other big difference for Muncie Central is the amount of athletes that showed up. Padgett mentioned that they had doubled their attendance from last season. With the new stadium and new players, the atmosphere is what excites senior Marvin McClinton. “It’s just really the atmosphere that we brought in from the summer, from spring ball, and from winter lifting,” he said. McClinton was a factor for the Bearcat defense last season. He led the team with eight quarterback hurries and caused two fumbles. To him, the biggest component of the season will be discipline. “As long as we become more disciplined and stay disciplined, we’re gonna win more games,” he said. “The more disciplined you are, the more teams won’t be able to get to you.” Another returner, senior Leo Boyd, talked about the state of the team during the summer practices. “Our offense started off a little rocky,” Boyd said. “But we’re getting better every day. We had to go through a whole bunch of new offensive linemen and people move on positions. But on defense, we’ve been locked in and ready since spring.” The Bearcats will start the season when they visit the Delta Eagles Aug. 18.

Wes-Del Muncie Central was not the only school in Delaware County to receive upgrades to their football field this offseason. This season, The Warriors will be the third Delaware County team to have a turf field. “Our superintendent and our administration, we’re pretty big on getting our kids to have pride in what they have,” head coach Matt Nuckols said. “...So being able to get some of that for our kids, I think that’s big just for them to have some pride in their school.” Last season was Nuckols’s first season as head coach. The Warriors ended the year with a 1-9 record, and with most of last year’s roster returning, Nuckols wants to build upon that. “That’s probably the most exciting thing to see is how much more ready we’re going to be on a Friday night,” he said. “With just our kids having that extra year of development and getting in the weight room and getting into those varsity bodies.” One of the Warrior’s standout players from last season was senior Trey Adams. He led the team with 33.7 receiving yards per game and 32.1 rushing yards per game.

Continued from Page 10 “I think [playing for Delta] made me more confident when I went back to club soccer,” she said. “I’m really happy that I ended up playing for Delta.” It wasn’t just her teammates or the Delta community that encouraged and supported Chester. It was the whole county. “I think that Delta has been a really good community for me to grow up in,” Chester said. “It hasn’t been super soccer-focused all the time, which is super nice. But Delaware County has always supported me.” For Clark, the fact that Chester regained her enjoyment for soccer because of the blue and gold represent what high school sports should do for the students that partake in them. “My goal for Delta Athletics is to create an environment where student-athletes can learn life lessons, while also being coached to accomplish goals,” he said. “I want Delta Athletics to be known for preparing student-athletes to go out into the world to be difference makers and to be good human beings. I hope Addie can look back on her time at Delta and be thankful that she was an Eagle.”

And then it really only took a couple of phone calls to realize that her character matched what we were looking for as well.” - KAREN FERGUSON-DAYES, Louisville head coach Big decisions When Chester was ready to decide between playing collegiately, the Cardinals were not in the picture. After her freshman season, she verbally committed to play for the Nittany Lions of Penn State University. But after making that decision, doubt started to set in. “It just didn’t quite feel right.,” Chester said. “It was one of those things where I was kind of not looking forward to going. That’s where I realized, okay, maybe I should probably be looking forward to where I’m going to college.” One of the negative factors that loomed over her head was the distance between the college and Muncie. With that in mind, she wanted to pick a
school that was closer than the one that was about five and a half hours away. But Louisville was not her first choice. She was 95 percent sure that she was going to be a Boilermaker and suit up for Purdue. But then she had a phone conversation with Louisville head coach Karen Ferguson-Dayes. “I wish I could bottle up what I told her [during the phone conversation],” Dayes said. “I know we did a PowerPoint presentation and kind of showed her a little bit more in-depth about the university. But [Chester] is a woman of few words, right? She is a listener and she’s a thinker. I really need to ask her because she’s never told me why the first conversation was so impactful.” But before that phone call, Dayes watched Chester and valued her skills. And when Chester decommitted from Penn State, she hopped on the opportunity. “For us, the two pieces that are super important are character and talent,” Dayes said. “[We knew] she had the talent at that point after seeing her play. And then it really only took a couple of phone calls to realize that her character matched what we were looking for as well.” After deciding to spend her college career with the Cardinals, Chester left for the university a semester early. This is a choice that she still agrees with to this day. “I just kind of decided what would help me more long term,” she said. “And I think that it was huge because as a freshman playing the ACC in the fall, it’s really hard to adjust quickly enough with the month you have before the first game.” This decision also helped Chester connect with her teammates as she roomed with some of them. “I had told [Dayes] if I’m not going to be in a dorm with my teammates, I probably won’t come early,” she said. “Just because I would be more uncomfortable when I could come in the fall and be with my teammates then.” In her freshman season, Chester played 15 games and started in 12 of those. She recorded two assists and two goals. She rates her performance in her first collegiate season with 70 percent. But Dayes believes she did it a bit better. “She gave herself a C-?” Dayes asked, chuckling. “I’d give her a B-... “We’re getting the young guys developed and we’re getting more developed as a team,” Adams said. “I feel like we’ve been a lot better [in practices this summer] than the previous summer.” To Nuckols, senior quarterback Triton Blevins was one Warrior that looked great in summer practices. Blevins threw for 425 passing yards and had a touchdown pass last season, and is ready to improve this season. “Some of the receivers and I have been going around and running routes just on our own free time,” Blevins said. With both Adams and Belvins graduating after this season, they are excited to compete one last time on their brand new field. “It’s just a nice feeling,” Adams said. “ I’m happy for the young guys that get to play on it for the rest of their careers.” Delta Last season did not end the way the Eagles or their fans wanted. Their last-second sectional loss to Yorktown is something that head coach Chris Overholt wants them to use as motivation. “I think anytime you go [through something like that], either that’s going to break you or motivate you going into the next season,” he said. “And I’ll tell you, our captains and our leaders, starting January 1, had the mentality that we are going to move on from it. It was going to make us better and it was not going to hinder us for this upcoming season.” But there is something different about this season’s team. Senior Kaiden Bond has been the starting quarterback the last two seasons, but
the Eagles plan to use junior Bronson Edwards alongside Bond this season. “We’re excited that they both [Bond and Edwards] kind of bring something to the table,” Overholt said. “Bronson’s accuracy down the field has really come along.” To Edwards, the energy that the Eagles have shown this summer is something that can carry them through the season. “I think energy right now is great,” he said. “I love playing with them and we just all feed off of each other.” But there is one apparent thing. The Eagles lost many talented players and leaders due to graduation. Names like Palmer Samuels and Caleb Elliot are just a few. “We have some great three-year starters for us,” Overholt said. “And guys just keep showing up. We’ve had great attendance over the summer and guys are coming along and we’re still getting better each day.” After their 3-7 record last season, the Eagles ranked third in Delaware County record-wise. This is something Overholt wants to change for his ninth season as Delta’s head coach. “There’s gonna be a big focus on retaking the 765 because that’s something that we are proud of,” he said. “Delaware County football has gotten so much better in the last three years, and it means something to be the champion of the 765.” The Eagles will open up the season at home against Muncie Central. ‘Play fast, play forward, play together’ Ball State Field Hockey comes into the season with high energy Elijah Poe Summer Editor After a first-round exit in the MAC Tournament in their 2022-23 campaign, Ball State Field Hockey came to its first practice of the season with fire in its eyes. Sticking to the team motto: “Play fast, play forward, play together.” “We’re keeping that team mentality of playing hard and playing for each other,” head coach Caitlin Walsh said. “Our motto is play fast, play forward, play together. So I think just sticking to our identity, and coming out strong each and every game.” Walsh said the team came in with a lot of energy in practice for the upcoming season. She said they have quite a few returners and are ready to go. “You can tell they have put in the work and are hungry for this year,” Walsh said. “So I am super excited.” Last year was Walsh’s first season as head coach of the Cardinals, and she said she learned a lot from
her first year. “I think just understanding the team better (on what she learned in her first year), I think now knowing our vision, our goals and kind of where we want this program to go,” Walsh said. “I think the team is on board with it. Having that experience and being able to take it to that next level.” Walsh said the team has set the bar high for themselves, making it a standard to get into the MAC tournament. She also said the challenging non-conference schedule is going to help the Cardinals prepare for the MAC tournament. Senior goalie Hannah Johnston said that after the MAC tournament loss last year, the team has been more open-minded and brought a new level of excitement to this season. Johnston said she is focusing on building her strength back up after being out last season due to injury. The return from injury will also be her senior season as a Cardinal.

They are the best, I know I can trust them, so that’s the most important.” Sophomore forward Fluer Knopert is coming off an All-MAC and Freshman First-team and is expected to be a key player for Ball State again this year. She said learned how to better position herself and make more effective passes coming out of her highly awarded first year at Ball State. Yats Adding a completely different flair to The Village, Yats is a cajun restaurant that offers something high quality for those who want something they can’t find anywhere else in their food and restaurants. Spicy foods litter Yats’ menu, meaning there is no better option for someone who likes their food to pack a punch.
Pita Pit Much different than anything else in Muncie, Pita Pit seems to be an underrated favorite by many who attend Ball State. Whether you want to create your own pita or order one of the predetermined choices, or even a bowl, Pita Pit has a wide ranging and healthy selection.
Muncie, Indiana may offer many of the same restaurants as many mid-sized towns in Indiana would, however, that doesn’t mean they aren’t great options. At HotBox, you’ll walk in to flame painted walls, cartoons on the TVs and a chance to order many unique kinds of pizza that come with a Tootsie Roll! At Greek’s, it’s more of your traditional pizza place, where you can order classic pies with a red sauce that offers a sweet flavor.
Roots Burger Bar
Roots not only offers a great selection of food, but it offers a fun array of weekly events from Trivia Night to Music Bingo, if you choose to go to Roots you’ll have a good time and your taste buds will too. While their burgers are their calling card, Roots offers something for everyone with great appetizers, salads and sandwiches (hot and cold).
Puerta Vallarta
One of two absolute Muncie classics, across three locations, Puerta Vallarta is a favorite for anyone who decides to eat there. Along with their infamous chips and salsa, Puerta offers a large selection full of Mexican favorites. Whether you visit Puerta on Tillotson, Broadway or Wheeling, their food and atmosphere rarely disappoint.
Pizza King
Of course, this listicle wouldn’t be complete without Pizza King. In Muncie alone there are nine Pizza King locations, making it clear that this classic pizza restaurant is beloved by the Muncie community. Although their pizza is clearly what people come for, they also offer great breadsticks and tasty salads and subs.
Twin Archer In downtown Muncie, Twin Archer is similar to Roots and Brother’s in their menu, but you’ll find they make their food different to where they are still able to be unique. The atmosphere at Twin Archer is a fun one, with drawings from customers all over the walls and great servers. Start off with one of their delicious appetizers and you’ll be sure to stay for the main course.
Sitara Indian Restauraunt
In the plaza near Payless off Wheeling, Sitara Indian Restaurant offers Muncie locals and Ball State students something different from the norm. Though they have unique hours (11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. and 5-9 p.m. Sunday, Tuesday-Thursday & 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. and 5-9:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, closed Monday), Sitara can not only fill your hungry stomach, but it’ll do so with foods and flavors unique to Muncie and the surrounding area.
Chava’s Mexican Grill
Many students at Ball State may find their sleep schedule is completely different from what it was during the summer. Days where homework keeps you up into the wee hours of the night and you’re hungry because you haven’t eaten dinner means only one thing; a trip to Chava’s is in your near future. Chava’s is open until 3 a.m., making this late night gem for those who always crave Mexican food. For those who don’t plan on going in the middle of the night, it’s just as good during normal lunch or dinner time.
