BALL STATE SET THE STAGE, NOW WE NEED TO PERFORM This will likely be the last thing I ever write for the Ball State Daily News. After four years of writing, reporting and putting together around 300 different stories, editing other reporters’ work on a nightly basis, leading a staff in the best way I could and making sure this newspaper covered what mattered to its audience, I’m done. I think we all have experiences in college that define ourselves as students. There are nursing majors that wake up at ridiculous hours in the morning to take clinical shifts every week, education majors that student teach at different schools around Muncie and art majors that strive each day to just make people tap into their deepest feelings through something they created. By the end of our time in college, we all hope to be satisfied with how prepared we are for our career. I know the countless interviews and long nights in the newsroom will pay off for me. But I still regret a lot about my time at Ball State. My senior year especially showed me that. We as students were lucky enough to have events like Fun., Life in Color and Dave + Oprah come to Ball State throughout the year. And those are only the highlights. Sure, I went to a few of those. I even paid $100 to get a ticket to see Oprah when I realized I would hate myself if I didn’t go. But I only made the commitment to see and do as much as I could during my senior year, when I didn’t have much time left to enjoy those experiences. As a member of the Daily News, I often made excuses to avoid going to shows or hanging out with my friends. At the time, it was either doing that or

getting a couple extra hours of sleep. Guess what? I don’t care about any extra hours of sleep anymore. But I do care about the memories, or lack thereof, I made at this school. And no matter what year you’re in, you should, too. It’s obvious that Ball State is trying to build a better identity for itself by hosting such high-profile events in the past few years. Students’ apathetic attitudes have been a problem at Ball State for decades, and the university wants to end it. If you need an example, just look at the physical changes that have been made recently or will be made soon. Residence halls have been renovated and built, and new athletic facilities are scheduled to follow. The renovations made to North Quad still look beautiful, so I’d expect the same for the ones made to the Applied Technology Building and Teachers College. Ball State is trying to beautify this campus. It’s trying to develop pride in its students, and push them to like going to this school and to get involved. My parents once told me that college would be the most fun of my entire life. It has certainly lived up to that billing, but I feel like it could have been so much better if I had taken some time to just enjoy it. As watered down as it may sound after hearing it from your own parents for years, take it from a graduating student: Don’t make the same mistakes I made. This is our time to get the most out of life. The administrators at Ball State have given students more ways than ever to make lifelong memories. It’s up to you to make them happen.

MUNCIE GRAS BARES IT ALL

A woman is cheered on as she flashes her breasts while riding the mechanical bull at Muncie Gras. In Mardi Gras tradition, men and women who flashed the crowd, despite the nippy 40 degree weather, were thrown beads. Downtown bars, such as The Heorot, The Silo, Columbia Theatre, Doc’s Music Hall and Fickle Peach, fueled the night with domestic drafts and craft brews.

LATE NITE CARNIVAL

MUNCIE ZOMBIE WALK

DN FILE PHOTO JONATHAN MIKSANEK

Students wait in line for the Ferris wheel during the Late Nite Carnival. The ride closed for a stretch of time due to bad weather. While Late Night Carnival is a spring event, it resembled more of a winter wonderland on April 21. On-and-off showers of freezing rain, snow and ice pellets had rides shutting down throughout the night. However, the fair-food vendors, rides, games and live musical acts brought 5,140 attendees to the event. Senior public relations major and Late Nite Carnival publicity coordinator Kelsey McPheeters said normally 8,000 students attend the carnival.

John Lee stares down the camera while in make-up on March 23. However, this make-up wasn’t about beautification; it created the appearance of an undead epidemic. There were several species of zombies, such as jocks, nurses, soldiers and TV hosts, during the walk. The Muncie Zombie Walk was hosted by Scarevania Haunted House and Grace Village Campus Ministry.

Participants in the 2013 BSU Dance Marathon dance during the 24-hour-long event on Feb. 16. Dance Marathon raised twice as much in 2013 than it did the previous year. The event raised $196,228 for Riley Children’s Hospital and 1,316 students participated, compared to 719 in 2012. Those that had been treated at Riley Children’s Hospital spoke throughout the event.

About 220 participants dance in the middle of the Scramble light on Feb. 13 to film a “Harlem Shake” video. Students gathered include Ball State in recreating the popular viral video. Charlie Cardinal, a cut -out of the Dos Equis “Most Interesting Man in the World” and a giant banana were all in attendance, flailing to the “Harlem Shake.” The video has more than 71,400 views. It isn’t Ball State’s only crack at the “Harlem Shake.” The swimming and diving team did an underwater frenzy and BSU Tonite raved in a classroom.

Oprah Winfrey laughs at a joke David Letterman made during their talk on Nov. 26, 2012. Tickets for the event in John R. Emens Auditorium were sold out, and the conversation was streamed in Pruis Hall and the L.A. Pittenger Student Center for those who didn’t receive tickets. Before the 4 p.m. talk, Letterman and Winfrey arrived at the David Letterman Media and Communications Building to greet students and record an interview for Winfrey’s show, “Next Chapter.”

LINING UP FOR OPRAH The overhang in front of the Emens Auditorium Box office is packed with sleeping students as they camp out for tickets. Tony Proudfoot, associate vice president of Marketing and Communcations, said all students who waited in line overnight were assured tickets to the event. The University Police Department was called twice during the evening, once for an intoxicated girl who became sick and once for water balloons that were thrown at people in line. Oprah Winfrey dances on stage after the talk with David Letterman. More than 3,000 students attended the conversation at John R. Emens Auditorium.

BOSTON BOMBING Emergency personnel assist victims at the scene of a bomb blast during the Boston Marathon on April 15, 2013. Two bombs exploded approximately 10 seconds apart at the finish line of the marathon, killing three people and injuring more than 170. On April 19, Watertown, Mass., authorities captured suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev a day after his brother Tamerlan was shot and killed during an exchange with police. In initial interviews following his capture, Dzhokhar said he and his brother were motivated by extreme Islamist beliefs. MCT PHOTO

The name of the project is “Cardinal Committed.” Of the $20 million goal for the project, more than $12 million has already been raised. Ball State plans to run the campaign through December 2014. All of the money will come from donations. Ball State looked to other Mid-American Conference schools for inspiration on what to build. Some of the announcements are a new practice facility for the basketball and volleyball teams, allowing private practice for one of the teams at any time.
