COVID COMMENCEMENT Ball State University prepares for spring graduation.
Fall 2019 Ball State graduates get ready to turn the tassels on their caps Dec. 14, 2019, at John E. Worthen Arena. Ball State’s spring 2020 graduation ceremony was postponed due to COVID-19 concerns, and those graduates were invited to attend commencement this semester. JACOB MUSSELMAN, DN FILE After a year with no inperson graduation ceremonies, Ball State is preparing to host more than 3,000 students who registered to walk at graduation in Scheumann Stadium.
Kathy Wolf, vice president for marketing and communications, said in an email the May 7 and 8 ceremonies will honor 2021 graduates. There will also be a separate ceremony May

approximately 900 will be at the 2020 celebration. Wolf said only two ceremonies are scheduled for spring, summer and fall 2020 graduates because of the number of reservations from students from the classes of 2020. Each student who registered for commencement was given four guest tickets. Overall attendance for the ceremonies is expected to be around 16,000. “This ticket allotment is based on the number of total people that we can safely accommodate based on the Delaware County Health Department COVID-19 guidelines for events,” Wolf said. When registering for graduation, students were given the option to select between the classes of 2020 and 2021. All of the 2020 graduates will be honored together May 15, but the class of 2021 will be split between different colleges. Commencement will be a series of small, outdoor gatherings organized by colleges to comply with state and local social distancing guidelines. - Staff Reports

Inclusive Education African American Studies staff and a graduating senior look to the future of the program.
TAYLOR SMITH, DN
Mackenzie Rupp Reporter After 2020 brought forth more conversations and raised awareness of racism and biases, senior interpersonal communications major Lauren Reynolds saw an opportunity to develop her skills in her future career. Reynolds hopes to become an independent anti-racist consultant after she graduates in May 2021.

She said the African American Studies program helped her learn about issues students of color face on and off campus. Reynolds was introduced to the African American Studies minor early in her college career. She attended a screening of the documentary “I Am Not Your Negro,” focusing on the life of James Baldwin, held by Associate Professor of English Emily Rutter and then-Assistant Professor of History Simon Balto in 2017. “I just fell in love with the way [Balto] talked about Baldwin,” Reynolds said. “I was like, ‘I really want to be a part of
[the minor].’” Reynolds said the minor has allowed her to discuss content that wasn’t taught in K-12 schools. “I did grow up in a Black household, and my parents did teach me some Black history,” Reynolds said, “but it was a further diving into it as a young adult, with the nuances of having more adult responsibilities and being around people my age who actually wanted to talk about it.”
I did grow up in a Black household, and my parents did teach me some Black history, but it was a further diving into it as a young adult, with the nuances of having more adult responsibilities and being around people my age who actually wanted to talk about it.” - LAUREN REYNOLDS, Senior interpersonal communications major Reynolds’ favorite class in the minor was a course on Black sociology, taught by sociology graduate student John Anderson. Reynolds said the program allowed her to discuss her experiences as a woman of color in a predominately white institution in a safe space where she “can feel comfortable” bringing up race-related topics. Reynolds said she hopes the African American Studies minor will eventually develop into a major. “I hope that Ball State evolves and is more intersectional and
inclusive,” Reynolds said. “As much as there are people who are trying to help, I don’t feel like they’re given the attention, or the platform or the time.” Rutter and Kiesha WarrenGordon, associate professor of criminal justice and criminology, are the current co-chairs of the African American Studies program. “If you go back and look at the history of African American Studies programs across the country, in the ’60s and ’70s, those programs were developed out of protest,” Warren-Gordon said. “In some situations, [these were] violent protests expressing the needs of the students and in terms of what they wanted to see in their education.” The African American Studies minor was relaunched at Ball State in 2017 because of “student calls for more coursework and programming about Black experiences,” Rutter said in an email. “More recently, there’s been student demand for classes that are specifically focused on antiracism and intersectionality,” Rutter said. Rutter said a survey sent out in the fall 2020 semester found student interest in a course focused on anti-racism, understanding race and intersectionality “was really high.” Due to this interest, the class, African American Studies 150, will be adopted into Ball State’s core curriculum as an option for humanities requirements. The course will be taught for the first time in spring 2022. Warren-Gordon said there are currently between 40 and 50 students in the African American Studies program, but Rutter and Warren-Gordon hope interest will grow when the AFAM 150 course becomes part of the university
course catalog. “There has always been a group of students who wanted to know more about who they are and to center their lives within their academic learning,” WarrenGordon said. Rutter said she and WarrenGordon want to make sure everything is in place to set the enrolled students up for success within the minor and future major. Reynolds said her time in the African American Studies program has allowed her to pick a career in which she can apply her new skills. “I don’t really want to be subservient to whatever system or job I have after I graduate,” Reynolds said. “I want to be able to talk about issues that I care about or that affect me because, if we don’t talk about them, then we don’t resolve them.” Contact Mackenzie Rupp with comments at msrupp@bsu.edu or on Twitter at @kenzieer18.
LEARN MORE ABOUT THE COURSE: In spring 2022, the class will be taught by Emily Rutter, associate professor of English and co-chair of the African American Studies program, and will be available for three credit hours Tuesdays and Thursdays. AN IMPROVED OUTLOOK
Ball State faculty and national statistics predict job market growth in COVID-19 recovery. Garrett Chorpenning and Grace McCormick Reporter and News Editor
More than 3 million students are expected to earn degrees from colleges and universities this spring, according to the National Center for Education Statistics. Those students will enter the job market as the nation continues to recover from the COVID-19-induced recession, which the National Bureau of Economic Research stated began in February 2020. However, new and recent college graduates may be in a better position than other candidates seeking new careers. “For recent college graduates, the COVID job market has mostly been reasonable,” said Michael Hicks, director of Ball State’s Center for Business and Economic Research. “Employment by income category among [high-wage workers], which are mostly college graduates, actually rose through 2020. The employment outcomes for those workers were reasonably good … For most college graduates, the job market now is a little bit better than a typical recession year, better than other workers, but not one in which job options are as plentiful as one would like.” Though college graduates are beginning to see more job opportunities, this wasn’t always the case during the pandemic. The Federal Reserve Bank of New York reported recent graduates ages 22-27 experienced higher rates of unemployment than the general workforce from March to October 2020. People with college degrees who are older than 28 have consistently recorded lower unemployment rates than the general population. Because the 2020 recession was driven by the COVID-19 pandemic, Chair of the Department of Economics John

Horowitz said, unemployment will likely recover at a quicker pace in the next few years than it did after the 2008 recession. “In previous recessions, you didn’t require people to stay home,” Horowitz said. “That’s why some economists talked about how the people who have jobs where they can work from home often have done better and have more disposable income … On the other side is people whose work has been shut down and they didn’t have money anymore, and, maybe, it took a little bit for them to get unemployment [benefits].” One of the most important strategies in searching for a job is networking, Horowitz said. He recommends students reach out to people in the job sector they are interested in for an interview or shadowing opportunity. “It helps to go out, and interview people, and ask them about what they do and ask for recommendations on who else to talk to,” Horowitz said. “A lot of times, that will tell you whether that’s something you want to do, and, secondly, it will tell them that you’re somebody who goes out and makes personal connections.” Developing job skills even after earning a degree is another job-searching approach Horowitz suggested.
“What firms tend to be looking for is people who can write, people who can speak clearly and concisely and are conscientious about getting things done and knowing the language of business,” he said. “A lot of these jobs want knowledge of computers or other software where you’re able to analyze different situations.” Though it is still more difficult than usual for graduating seniors to find a job, Horowitz said, networking and professional development can provide students

with more opportunities. The unemployment rate has recovered since the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported more than 11 million jobs were lost between February and August 2020 — but not to pre-pandemic levels. Fortunately, for soon-to-be graduates, Hicks expects to see opportunities become more widely available as the economy continues to recover. “2021 looks fairly strong,” Hicks said. “I think the expectation is significant growth in labor demand, particularly for educated workers, which has been the hallmark of the last two decades. So, college graduates, for the most part, are doing fairly well.” Hicks said he thinks college graduates will benefit from what he predicts will continue to be a growing job market. “We just came through a very long period of economic growth,” Hicks said. “It wasn’t fast, but college graduates did disproportionately well … So, even with this downturn, employment options for graduates remain fairly strong.” Contact Garrett Chorpenning with comments at gachorpennin@bsu. edu or on Twitter @gachorpenning. Graduates share their thoughts on entering the healthcare industry during COVID-19. Maya Wilkins Assistant News Editor After three semesters of attending classes and completing clinicals during the COVID-19 pandemic, senior nursing majors are ready to enter the workforce and put their skills to the test. Lauren Hamil is relocating to Alabama to be with her family after graduation and said she is in the interview process for two different nursing positions — one as an emergency room (ER) nurse and another as a pediatric nurse. When considering what her life will look like working in an ER during the pandemic, Hamil said she doesn’t anticipate things changing in the near future. “I think the healthcare industry will continue seeing the effects of COVID, even when the public
returns to normal,” Hamil said. Hamil said she thinks masks will still be in effect in hospitals for at least another year but
doesn’t know what working in a hospital will look like after that. “I know that employers are looking out for the safety of their

employees, so I trust that my future employer will help keep me safe so I can take care of my patients effectively,” Hamil said. She added that the pandemic has not changed whether she wants to be a nurse because, at the end of the day, being a nurse is about helping people and dealing with various diseases. She also believes members of her graduating class are “very aware” of the environment they are preparing to enter. “I feel like the Ball State [nursing] program does a very good job on preparing us to be successful in our career,” Hamil said. “They have taught us how to collaborate with others and how to ask questions.” Because of Ball State’s program, Hamil said, she doesn’t have any fears about entering the field but instead is looking
BALLSTATEDAILY.COM • 11 forward to her future in nursing. “I’m excited for all of it,” she said. “I’m excited to graduate. I’m excited to begin a career in something I’ve been studying for four years and just be out there and help people.” Like Hamil, Gabe Cochard is graduating in May. After graduation, Cochard will work at University Hospital in Indianapolis in the medical intensive care unit (ICU) and said he thinks his experience after college will be “interesting.” “I think we’re going into a field where [nurses are] definitely more appreciated now than we were at one point,” he said. “It’s also just weird because we started out school in this world where everything seemed normal, and, now, we’re going into a world where things are so different.” Cochard also said he believes nurses will have more respect after the pandemic because people have seen health professionals “risking their lives to save other people.” He said he always knew something like the COVID-19 pandemic could happen, so it didn’t make him want to enter the field any less. “Honestly, it just made me want to be in health care more because I was able to help make a difference in the lives of people who have gotten sick or have been changed because of this pandemic,” he said. Cochard said he has no fears entering the field after graduation because he trusts the COVID-19 vaccine will protect him and his family. He believes, once the entire population is vaccinated, life will go back to normal. “There’s no reason to fear the healthcare field,” Cochard said. “I’m sure there’s going to be new disease outbreaks that are going to happen, and, honestly, that’s just a driving force because I’ll be able to help make a difference and help be the change that I want to be.” Equipping herself to handle challenges is also a motivating factor for Emily Bastian, who will work at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis as a registered nurse after graduating in May. Bastian said she is excited to enter the healthcare field during the pandemic. “There’s a lot of new opportunities that we kind of have to come across, and that
revolutionizes our healthcare system, so I’m definitely looking forward to it,” she said. “It’s definitely an adventure, and I’m
ready to take it on.” Bastian also said she believes Ball State faculty has done a “great job” preparing her to be a nurse.
Honestly, it just made me want to be in health care more because I was able to help make a difference in the lives of people who have gotten sick... because of this pandemic.” - GABE COCHARD, Senior nursing student
I think it would have been different if I had graduated last year. We have done more research, and we understand more about the virus so that we can better handle it now.” - KAITLYN HANSEN, Senior nursing student
It’s all about helping people, and that’s what I want to continue to do. Even though the pandemic puts a damper on things, it definitely gives me more of a reason to go help people.” - EMILY BASTIAN, Senior nursing student
“We have amazing professors who are more than willing to sit down with you, and talk things through and prepare you for reallife examples,” Bastian said. She said she has always had a “strong drive” toward nursing, and the pandemic made her want to enter the field more than she had before. “It’s all about helping people, and that’s what I want to continue to do,” Bastian said. “Even though the pandemic puts a damper on things, it definitely gives me more of a reason to go help people.” Kaitlyn Hansen is another senior nursing student who is ready to graduate and help people in her field. Hansen is moving to Illinois after graduation and will work at a summer camp while studying for her board exam, she said, and will hopefully work in an ER or ICU afterward. Hansen said she is more excited than fearful about entering the nursing field after graduation mainly because she feels her classes and clinicals have prepared her well. “With classes all going online, the only in-person thing that we had as nursing students were our clinicals,” Hansen said. “We would show up and only see our classmates during clinicals once or twice a week, and that was kind of all the social interaction we got.” Hansen said she wasn’t treating COVID-19 patients until her last semester in clinicals. She had to sign a waiver saying she was allowed to treat those patients, and, if she contracted COVID-19, she could not hold the university liable. “I’m thankful that we were still able to get into the hospital, but it definitely was more limited with what we could and couldn’t do,” Hansen said. The pandemic didn’t make Hansen question whether she wanted to go into the nursing field or not because she “deals with sick people all the time.” She believes she was trained and taught to help those people. “I think it would have been different if I had graduated last year,” Hansen said. “We have done more research, and we understand more about the virus so that we can better handle it now.” Contact Maya Wilkins with comments at mrwilkins@bsu.edu or on Twitter @mayawilkinss.

Hardship and
friendship How two players from Ontario battled through adversity and grew closer
Senior defender Emily Simmons waves to the crowd as she’s introduced before Ball State’s home opener against Toledo March 4, 2021, at Briner Sports Complex. Both Simmons and Melissa Diceman grew up in Ontario, Canada, and played soccer on the same club team together. JACOB MUSSELMAN, DN Ian Hansen Sports Editor It’s the first game of the 2019 regular season. The Cardinals are preparing to face Eastern Illinois, and the public-address announcer calls out Melissa Diceman’s name as a starter — 11 months to the day after the then-junior midfielder tore her ACL. Her teammate, then-junior defender Emily Simmons, couldn’t help but smile — not just because Diceman recovered, but because she was Simmons’ best friend on the Cardinals. “I got super [excited],” Simmons said. “I was just very, very happy for her because I
know, coming so far away from home, especially dealing with all of her injuries — it’s just huge for her to be able to step up, and earn a starting spot and get to actually play because her and I both came here for soccer.” Diceman and Simmons grew up in Ontario, Canada, and the two briefly played together on the Toronto Blizzard, their club team, in 2017 before coming to Ball State. Both Diceman and Simmons have always been in love with soccer and had aspirations of playing in the United States. Diceman came to the U.S. in 2017 with previous experience competing in her neighboring
country, as the Blizzard would take road trips to Ohio and Indiana for tournaments, where she learned quite a bit about a different style of play. “The opportunities and the showcases in the States were huge,” Diceman said. “The tournaments we played in were always so exciting. I always remember those trips and going on the bus. With the Blizzard, we played at a lot of university schools, and it was good to see how different the soccer was.” Simmons took a different path, as she played her freshman season at the University of WisconsinGreen Bay in 2017 but said she
didn’t fit the culture there. While she was named to the Horizon League All-Freshman Team, the Phoenix went 4-11-1 for the season, and she wanted an opportunity to win. “I didn’t come all the way down here and separate from my family to be a normal college student,” Simmons said. “My goal was always to play soccer at a high level.” After her freshman season, Simmons talked to Diceman and asked her questions about Ball State’s program. As the only Canadian player on the team at

Diceman was happy to have a fellow Canadian on the team. “When Emily came, it was nice,” Diceman said. “We had our dorm rooms right beside each other. Driving home and having someone you can personally connect with from the same country was almost like a nice piece of home.” As a transfer, Simmons said she came into the program with a chip on her shoulder and had to work harder than some of her fellow teammates to prove herself. Ball State head coach Josh Rife said he believes Simmons has grown into a better leader over time, as she always holds players accountable and helps her teammates in their best interests. “I think Emily has grown in being more intentional with players,” Rife said. “That goes such a long way when you are willing to invest in your teammates a little bit more. It just strengthens that bond amongst the group. She is willing to dig a little deeper and sacrifice more for her teammates.”

Both Simmons and Diceman are graduating in the spring, and Rife said he has seen plenty of growth from them in their time at Ball State. “There is definitely a blue-collar mentality to both of them,” Rife said. “They are two young ladies who show up and train hard and work hard. They both have different stories on how they got here, but they both revolve around hard work and working through adversity.” Contact Ian Hansen with comments at imhansen@bsu.edu or on Twitter @ianh_2.

every second After being granted an extra year of eligibility, Ball State Softball’s fifth-year seniors are taking in every moment. Charleston Bowles Reporter When COVID-19 concerns canceled Ball State Softball’s 2020 season after 27 games, the Cardinals’ seniors were left questioning if they had played the last game of their Ball State careers. A few weeks after the cancellation, the NCAA gave an extra year of eligibility to all spring student-athletes March 30, 2020. None of the Cardinals’ five seniors thought twice about returning for an additional season. All of them — pitcher Alyssa Rothwell, infielder/outfielder Gabby Magnifico, outfielder Haley Dominique, infielder Janae Hogg and outfielder Kennedy Wynn — were thankful to have the opportunity to play one final season in the cardinal and white. “I knew that the way everything ended — it didn’t feel right for MADELYN GUINN, DN
any of us,” Wynn said. “We just wanted to be back in our safe place, which is softball. We wanted to end in the right way and just enjoy the moment with our teammates.” Despite an abrupt ending last season, the pandemic served as a chance for the Cardinals to grow closer and develop a deeper trust in one another. Rothwell said having an additional fifth year has allowed them to build on their friendships that will connect them forever. “Even after we’re done here, these are the people that are going to be in our weddings,” Rothwell said. “The bonds we’ve created and those relationships — we get to carry that on after college.” Wynn said their togetherness comes from the relationships they have built off the field while looking up to the four pillars of their program — family, gratitude, hard work and toughness. “We’ve been able to really

Graduate student pitcher
Teammates cheer on graduate student infielder/outfielder Gabby Magnifico (middle) after she hit a home run April 23, 2021, at the Softball Field at First Merchants Ballpark Complex. After the Cardinals’ 2020 season was cut short due to COVID-19 concerns, five seniors were granted a fifth year of eligibility. MADELYN GUINN, DN realize to never take anything for granted,” Wynn said. “Anything we’re doing as a team — even outside of practice or softball — we’re making sure we’re taking in those moments and taking care of one another.” Head coach Lacy Wood said all five players have different roles and qualities, and the contrast of their personalities makes their leadership extremely helpful. “I think that’s been key,” Wood said. “They’re not a group that they’re all the same — they’re different in the way they connect with everybody on the team, which is so huge.” Dominique is one senior who said she has developed in areas off the field during her fifth year. She said her confidence has grown tremendously since first joining the program in 2017, which will benefit her in multiple areas of life moving forward. “When I came in as a freshman, I was not very social,” Dominique said. “Now, I’ve built my confidence and grown a voice to where I’m not really afraid to say what’s on my mind.” Wood said she understands many programs do not have the luxury of having as much
experience as her team does, and she is thankful for how this group of fifth-year seniors represents Ball State. “They’re really guiding us right now,” Wood said. “They’ve been battle-tested and know what it feels like to compete. It’s what we want to be about in this program.” Rothwell, Hogg, Magnifico, Dominique and Wynn didn’t hesitate when the opportunity of a fifth season presented itself, and they have made the most of their final ride so far. The Cardinals’ 15-0 start in Mid-American Conference play marked their best single-season MAC win streak in program history. With no conference tournament this year, the Cardinals recognize the importance of every matchup to help them achieve their ultimate goal: a MAC Title. “Each game, whether it’s midweek or over the weekend, is super important,” Wynn said. “We’ve been really focusing on each game one at a time because we know that every game matters. Our record is going to win us the MAC.” Contact Charleston Bowles with comments at clbowles@bsu. edu or on Twitter @cbowles01.

and work life. As a child, LeBlanc would often climb trees, play in creeks and discover creatures under logs and rocks. For as long as she can remember, she said, nature has played a significant role in her life. “My family modeled and encouraged this passion with growing our own food and spending time outdoors,” LeBlanc said. “We had many houseplants too. I met my first native orchid when I was 9 years old in my backyard and have continued to find them and other native plants on all of my backpacking forays.” For 28 years, LeBlanc has worked as curator at the Dr. Joe & Alice Rinard Orchid Greenhouse, where she waters thousands of plant species, feeds frogs and goldfish, re-pots plants and collects data to maintain the appropriate growing conditions of each plant. Because the greenhouse also serves as a museum, LeBlanc maintains the facility for the public by interacting with visitors, teaching docents and volunteers, giving guided tours and fundraising. LeBlanc said her favorite part of her job is educating and sharing the collection with visitors and students. Before working at Ball State,
LeBlanc attended SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry in Syracuse, New York. While she was in college, LeBlanc said, she worked as a student assistant in greenhouses. From 1987-91, LeBlanc worked for the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Division of Nature Preserves. She also received her master’s degree in plant ecology in 1988. LeBlanc was hired as a part-time curator for the Rinard Orchid Greenhouse in 1993. When the greenhouse opened for the public to visit in 2014, LeBlanc began working there full time. Although most of the students who stop by the greenhouse already have an interest in nature, LeBlanc said, she believes she has helped some students foster and further their love for plants. “I have a number of former student employees who have gone on to have a career in nature-based jobs, and I maintain communication with many of them,” LeBlanc said. “Many of the student visitors who show an excitement about nature and plants will return to the greenhouse repeatedly, and we always share stories about our love of plants and nature.” Senior advertising major Kaylan Simpson was a student assistant and social media

Simpson said one of her favorite memories with LeBlanc was when she helped LeBlanc find Tess, a turtle who went missing for two weeks. “Cheryl told me she tore apart the greenhouse looking for her but still couldn’t find her anywhere,” Simpson said. “I went to the goldfish pond to feed the other turtle, Michelangelo. As soon as I put food into the water, Tess stuck her head out from under the bridge as if she hadn’t been missing for two weeks. I scooped her up like a hamburger and took her straight to Cheryl, who was so relieved.” Since August 2020, sophomore stage management major Hannah Coffman has worked as a greenhouse assistant. She said she likes working in the greenhouse because she knows what the day will bring. Until she graduates in 2023, Coffman said, she looks forward to continuing to work alongside LeBlanc and experience how hardworking she is. “One day, I came in, and Cheryl told me to get the net to catch the bananas,” Coffman said. “Cheryl climbs up on the ladder, but it is too far

This was just one example of how hardworking and badass Cheryl is.” Coffman said she is grateful to work alongside someone close to her family, as LeBlanc and her husband, Dave, knew her father. “Cheryl is one of the best people that I know, and she has clever humor and a big heart,” Coffman said. “It’s cool that Cheryl can mentor me in the way that Dave did for my dad.” Outside of work, LeBlanc’s love for plants continues at her home, where she has a small vegetable garden for her own “farm-to-table lifestyle.” LeBlanc’s outdoor perennial garden includes orchids and other plant species that encourage wildlife, birds and pollinators to visit. “As a plant ecologist, nature education and plant ecology is my passion,” LeBlanc said. “I am fortunate to be able to have a way to share that love through the most interesting group of plants — the tropical orchids.” Contact Grace Duerksen with comments at gvduerksen@bsu.edu or on Twitter @gracie_duerk.

Generation Abs traction If we try too hard to google the answers for our lives, we miss out on the process it takes to get there.
MAGGIE GETZIN, DN
BALLSTATEDAILY.COM • 21
Life isn’t like Google. It’s an entire journey where you don’t get your answers until later down the line — if you get answers at all.”
Elissa Maudlin is a sophomore journalism news major and writes “Abstraction” for The Daily News. Her Elissa views do not Maudlin necessarily Interim Opinion Editor, reflect those of the newspaper. “Abstraction” I am a part of Generation Z, the generation most renowned for having advanced technology and the internet at our fingertips our entire lives. We are the generation that received the tools earlier generations worked hard to create. To some, we are the lucky ones who can get anything we want with the click of a button. I’ve lived with this mentality all of my life. I’ve typed numerous search phrases into Google to answer my most obscure questions and watched more YouTube videos than I can count. My screen time ranges from seven to eight hours a day, and I take pride in being part of our world’s future, not falling behind and reminiscing about its past. Yet, I can’t help but feel like this internet era is hurting us and not in the way previous generations sometimes soapbox us about. The internet gives us a direct outlet for one of our biggest problems — our own impatience. When we can get the world’s answers with the click of a mouse, it’s hard to not expect
the rest of our lives to follow suit with this quickness. It’s hard to not want all of our problems solved in a minute’s notice, our identities and life paths figured out in a week. The problem is life doesn’t work this way. Life isn’t like Google. It’s an entire journey where you don’t get your answers until later down the line — if you get answers at all. Life’s processes are often very slow. Giving birth to a child, finding your soulmate, getting a high-paying job, etc. all feel like centuries because that’s the way life works. One of the most tiring life processes is finding your passion and what you’re meant to do in the world. Most college freshmen don’t wake up knowing exactly what their purpose is, and, for some people, that doesn’t change much as a college senior. The process is tedious and exhausting, with dead ends and plot twists at every corner, and, no matter how hard people try, it doesn’t go any faster — that’s not the way finding your passion works. If big life processes take time, people should be willing to journey through them and explore themselves in the meantime, right? Yet, that’s not at all what I see from myself and others around my age. I see people rush to find their soulmates and hate themselves if they aren’t married at 22. I see students put themselves through debilitating stress if they don’t have their career plan mapped out after college. I see people run
circles around themselves for things they cannot control, the things life unfolds naturally when the time is right. The fact that we’d google all the spoilers to our life rather than experience them maybe isn’t something exclusive to just Generation Z — perhaps, we are just a byproduct of the same need for control previous generations felt as well. Technology is a tool civilizations have used for centuries to improve society — at least, that’s what many history classes drilled into my brain growing up. Humans created the internet, which fixed our problem of things being slow and filled our need for fastpaced lives. Our impatience was already there from that first technological invention, and we are just the generation that serves as proof of it. For myself, this has been the monster I’ve had to face multiple times in my life and continue to face as I get older. My own impatience impacts the way I live my life and makes me feel like I’m not actually enjoying it at times. I’m so worried about figuring everything out that I don’t stop and smell the roses. I’m too focused on climbing the mountain ahead of me that I don’t see the small pit stop next to that mountain with water and food I could enjoy. If all I ever do is climb mountains and search for the next ones, I’ll climb the rest of my life and never stop — that’s terrifying to me. The whole point
of climbing a mountain is to conquer it, but the secret no one tells you is that there will always be another one. If you never stop and rest, you’ll climb forever. We have created a world with our bare hands that doesn’t adhere to the basic principles of living. Living takes time, things come slowly and revelations occur at a snail’s pace. This directly conflicts with the digital world we created, which has trained us to expect answers in seconds. When we want the answer so quickly, we miss out on the journey it takes to get to the answer. Part of what makes life so wonderful is the learning that comes with it, the funny moments that surprise you and the curveballs that shock you. We miss out on all of that if we skip the process. The truth is maybe we are all a part of what I like to call Generation Google, a group of people who feel like they’re falling behind and want to know where they’re heading before they take the first step — people who willingly sacrifice the journey just to get to the answer. If you’re a part of Generation Google, you are so worried you aren’t doing life right that life passes right by you before you even notice. I am a part of Generation Google, but I’m tired of skipping out on the process and needing all the answers. I just want to enjoy my life and actually live.
