CAP ON Ball State community reacts to pandemic restrictions lifted for spring 2022 commencement.
Krystiana Brosher Digital News Editor Growing up interested in architecture, Katarina Antal chose Ball State because she knew it had a good program and offered her what she wanted. As a senior landscape architecture major, she knew she would be spending five years at Ball State because of the common curriculum program in the College of Architecture and Planning (CAP). Antal experienced college before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. She had a variety of class structures, both in-person and online. “[It] was definitely hard getting used to watching our teachers learn how to teach online,” Antal said, “but it’s now going back to everything being in-person. It’s been nice to meet with people face to face and have [an] in-person learning experience.” Ro-Anne Royer Engle, vice president of student affairs, said Ball State’s leadership has been guided by the Centers for Disease

Students are also free to invite as many guests as they want, contrary to a year ago when each spring 2021 graduate participating in commencement was limited to four guests who were socially distanced in Scheumann Stadium’s bleachers. Antal said she is inviting her parents and her boyfriend’s parents to commencement and is not too worried about anyone contracting COVID-19 because everyone she is inviting is vaccinated. She said she is excited to show her family and friends around Muncie, the place she’s called home for the past five years. “I’m looking forward to enjoying good food with them and showing them some of the work I’ve done throughout college,” Antal said. Antal said she’s had a lot of fun experiences at Ball State, with some of her favorites including the friends she made in CAP. “There’s a lot of excitement and energy on campus once the weather starts to get nice in spring, and I loved hanging out outdoors with my friends, hammocking, having picnics or throwing a frisbee around,” she said.

During summer 2021 commencement, graduates who were fully vaccinated were not required to wear masks, but people who were not fully vaccinated had to wear masks. During fall 2021 commencement, students were free to invite as many guests as they wanted, but everyone, regardless of their vaccination status, had to wear masks inside Worthen Arena consistent with university guidelines. Spring 2022 Commencement will be held Saturday, May 7. Angel Tuttle, assistant director of commencement and university events, said approximately 2,500 graduates are registered to attend the commencement ceremonies. The main ceremony will be held in the Quad at 10 a.m., and all ceremonies will be livestreamed on the Spring Commencement website. GRADUATION BLUES Managing feelings of post-graduation depression and anxiety.
Content Warning: This article contains descriptions and images related to anxiety and depression that may be triggering for some readers. Post-graduation depression is defined by Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) as “depression in young adults [that] often occurs right after they complete university coursework, often due to pressure to get a job right away or sadness leaving their college peers and life behind.” These facets of graduation, coupled with the fact college graduates have spent most of their
lives in a school setting, gives many a feeling of uncertainty post-college that can manifest itself in different ways. Some symptoms of post-graduation depression, according to SNHU, can be loneliness, sadness, decreased motivation, disorganization and a sense of hopelessness. However, there are ways to prevent or mitigate the effects of the shock that can cause post-graduation depression. Here are some factors graduates should take into consideration.
Stay connected, but branch out
Plan ahead and set achievable goals
One way to make the transition from college to the professional world easier is to stay connected with friends and family. Reach out for emotional support, even if you can’t see people regularly. A weekly phone call, text or video chat can make all the difference. However, you shouldn’t rely entirely on the friends you made in college — just as college is a new chapter after high school, your time after graduation is a new chapter after college. Make new connections and forge friendships with other people.
Students should begin considering their postgraduation career goals or higher education goals before they graduate. If you plan to enter the workforce after graduation, start looking into your job options and secure employment before the summer begins. If you plan to pursue graduate school, research schools and apply well before application deadlines. No matter your goal, explore housing options depending on where you would like to live after graduation or where your job will be taking you. Students can set small, achievable goals each day accomplishing little by little leading up to graduation.
Try to manage your stress and anxiety
Reach out for help if you need it
Stress management and self-care can be anything from exercising daily to eating nutritious food to simply making sure you get enough sleep. Meditation, breathing exercises and other activities can be used to slow down your brain and ease your anxiety, too. When your mind is relaxed, it’s much easier to create a list of things you need to do and prioritize.
It’s also important to realize when and if you n e e d outside help. If your anxiety, stress or depression noticeably impact your life, it’s possible you might benefit from professional advice. Seek out therapists, counselors or other professionals in your a r e a through sites like Psychology Today or GoodTherapy. If you’re having a mental crisis, contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-8255 to talk to a trained crisis worker. - Staff Reports

Ball State’s next set of teachers prepare to enter school systems. Angelica Gonzalez-Morales Reporter With multiple parents and guardians around the nation attending school board meetings to complain about the teaching of sensitive topics, Ball State’s Teachers College is trying to prepare current students for what they may face in their professional careers. As Ball State’s Spring 2022 commencement ceremony approaches May 7, Linda Martin, chair of the Department of Elementary Education, said Teachers College faculty have emphasized the need for inclusive and accurate teaching. In Indiana, House Bill 1134 proposed to allow parents to have more control over what their students learn in the classroom before it died in the Senate in February 2022. Though allowing parents to review classroom material before it’s taught isn’t a reality in Indiana, Martin said concerns among parents and lawmakers over sensitive topics in the classroom are still prevalent. “It is affecting how you look at the children in a classroom ... and it’s a mixture of all kinds of people,” Martin said. “Those children all have a right to be respected and taken to feel pride in who they are. That should be a teacher’s responsibility.” Tavyn Smith, senior elementary education major, said she wants to make sure she makes all of her future students feel appreciated. Smith
said she knew for most of her life she wanted to become a teacher, but after a six-week program she attended at UCLA the summer before her senior year of high school — which was aimed to help “historically underrepresented students … become competitively eligible for admission to UCLA and other flagship universities,” according to its website — she knew for certain she would be an educator.

That should be a teacher’s responsibility.” - LINDA MARTIN, Chair of the Department of Elementary Education
“I learned of the inequalities that occur in the education system between minority students and white students,” Smith said. “I learned that this system wasn’t built to
see Black and brown students — especially African American girls — succeed. That is my driving force in wanting to be the best teacher I can be, the best role model and supporter for all students no matter their background.” Martin said each department within the Teachers College has discussed how to support students graduating into a field parents and lawmakers want to regulate more. “We’re working together but also individually within our departments with our faculty — everyone has their own concerns,” Martin said. “No matter how difficult or challenging the circumstance may be, we are here working together through it.” Smith said the Teachers College faculty and staff have prepared her and her classmates for entering a variety of school systems. “They have provided us many opportunities so that we will be successful in districts no matter the environment,” Smith said. “One piece of advice that I have gotten from a professor here at Ball State is to always remember your ‘why’ for going into education.” In addition to inclusive and accurate teaching, Martin said Teachers College faculty are trying to instill the importance of kindness and understanding where each student is coming from. “We try to teach our new teachers here to be reflective and to be sensible about what you’re teaching,” Martin said. “Be sensitive and sensible about what you teach — consider all the children in your classroom.” Contact Angelica Gonzalez Morales with comments at agonzalezmor@bsu.edu or on Twitter @angelicag_1107.

THE POWER OF UNDERSTANDING Ball State student-athletes use their experiences to open opportunities to help others.
BALLSTATEDAILY.COM • 11 Corbin Hubert Reporter Books. Pencils. Whiteboards. All three items are present in classrooms and used by teachers and students to learn, but educators plan their lessons and days outside the classroom. Ball State Cross Country and Track and Field senior runner Emma Cunningham gained this perspective firsthand growing up from her mother, who she witnessed plan lessons. “My mom is a preschool teacher and has been since I was 2, so that is all I remember her doing,” Cunningham said. “It was always fun to watch her prep for her lessons.” Cunningham is finishing her major in elementary education. She decided to attend Ball State to pursue being a teacher, like her mother. Ball State offers around 180 majors along with 18 intercollegiate sports, allowing for student-athletes to explore and create their own experiences. Cunningham narrowed on elementary education because of her background in helping her classmates and peers. Having formed many relationships in school before attending Ball State, she said she associates school with positive memories and took several opportunities to help younger kids as she grew older. In high school, Cunningham took advantage of an opportunity to coach gymnastics, which reinforced her love of helping people. She said it was one of her “favorite things ever” because of how much she loved working with kids and being in a school setting. At 15 years old, Cunningham also volunteered with summer camps for gymnastics.
Some of them are old enough to understand what track is, and some of them even run track for the elementary school’s track team. I feel like it makes me a little bit more relatable and a bit cool.” - EMMA CUNNINGHAM, Ball State Cross Country and Track and Field senior runner
“I found that I was really good at it,” Cunningham said. “I always got really good feedback, and even though I was young and inexperienced, it came really naturally to me.” As she grew older, Cunningham coached older kids and said her teaching performance comes from her ability to explain things clearly for people who may not understand. She credits her time as a gymnastics coach as the moment she experimented with different strategies in different age groups to see how they learn and respond. As a student-athlete, Cunningham sees herself as a more relatable figure for those she coaches and works with as a student teacher in her third-grade classroom in Muncie Community Schools (MCS). “Some of them are old enough to understand what track is, and some of them even run track for the elementary school’s track team,” Cunningham said. “I feel like it makes me a little bit more relatable and a bit cool.”
As Cunningham participates in student-teaching, athletics and classes, Ball State Track and Field head coach Adrian Wheatley said her ability to balance several commitments simultaneously is what makes her stand out. “The exciting thing about Emma is that she brings a competitive mindset and energy to training sessions while being in the school of education and student-teaching, which is not an easy thing to do,” Wheatley said. Like Cunningham, Ball State Softball senior outfielder Faith Hensley also experienced a lifechanging moment that led her to choose a double major in premedical preparation and biology. Instead of inside a gymnastics studio, though, Hensley made her discovery in a doctor’s office. “I was a competitive gymnast [when I was younger] in addition to playing softball and also very clumsy, so I was always getting hurt,” Hensley said. “I broke around 12 bones when I was a kid, and a lot of the time, doctors did not understand me or what it was

like being a gymnast.” After several bouts of wrist injuries prevented her from participating in gymnastics, Hensley went to see Roger Cornwall, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital pediatric hand and upper extremity surgeon. That visit was the spark that ignited Hensley’s desire to serve in the medical field. “I remember he explained so well to me what my injury was, how to heal it and my limitations [with the injury],” Hensley said. Since the visit, Hensley has remained intrigued by science and became obsessed with knowing what made everything work, making her decision on a college major easier. Earlier in her collegiate career, Hensley shadowed Michael C. Albert, Dayton Children’s Hospital chief in the division of pediatric orthopaedics, and Kate. E Berz, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital pediatric sports medicine physician. Both experiences offered Hensley a new perspective on doctors. “It was a really cool experience to follow [Dr. Albert and Dr. Berz] and see their everyday lives and what they do and how they navigate problems,” Hensley said. Hensley thinks her time with Ball State Softball, which will continue into the 2023 season due to COVID19-related NCAA eligibility rules, has prepared her mentally for her professional future post-graduation. “The team-building and leadership skills that you acquire from the grind that is sports prepares you thoroughly for dealing with and solving problems once you enter the workforce,” Hensley said. Kris Ball poses for a photo April 22 in front of Woodworth Hall. Kris Ball is a 2000 graduate of Ball State and now works at Woodworth Complex. RYLAN CAPPER, DN
Ball State graduate, dining worker and author discusses her books and the experience that helped create them. Elissa Maudlin Associate Lifestyles Editor Kris Ball started writing when she was 6 years old — poetry, song lyrics, short stories. Ball said in the opening of one of her books that, sitting at the foot of her bed, her Aunt Janice — a woman 10 years younger than Ball’s “handsoff” mother — encouraged her to write and “would listen to [her] stupid poems.” “She always said, ‘Well, that’s really good. You’re a really good writer,’” Ball, 2000 Ball State graduate and dining worker at Woodworth Complex, said. “I was this dumb, little kid, and she’d always [say], ‘You need to keep writing. You should keep writing.’” As a first-grader, Ball performed a play she wrote
about talking animals for the kindergarten class at her school. Now, she is a published author with a poetry and prose book and two children’s books, the latter featuring a brown-haired bear in a Pendleton sweatshirt, jeans and Nikes as the “author.” Max the Bear was a stuffed animal Ball’s almost 31-year-old son, Adam Lawson, would sleep with as a child. However, after Ball took Max to Pendleton Elementary School during her janitor shift, she and Max were asked by teachers to read for classes. “I was taking Max with his clothes and his wagon, and I was reading to the kindergarteners and the second-graders and the preschoolers and the special needs kids, and they just loved him,” Ball said. “I would read to this class, and teachers in the next class over would hear about it. They’re like, ‘Hey, can you come and read to our class tomorrow?’” After a teacher at Pendleton encouraged her to write a book, Ball wrote, “How To Survive A Stuffed Bear Attack,” through the perspective of Max the Bear. She said this decision came from her experience reading to classes with children who believed Max was alive. However, the book, which she
wrote just to make people laugh, began to have a life of its own for one teacher at the school. “[The teacher] goes, ‘No, your book has an important message,’” Ball said. “And I said, ‘It does?’ And she said, ‘Yeah, this book is about love.’” Max the Bear once again came into the spotlight for Ball’s second book, “Bears Against Bullies,” but, without the backing of a publishing contract, the glossy and illustrated pages from the first book turned into photographs Ball took herself for the second book — including a park in the town she lived in, a family-used daycare and other locations. Even the name of one of the characters, Froggie Nelsons, came from Ball’s own life. “My nephew would play football with his bears and his frogs … And the star quarterback frog was named Froggie Nelsons,” Ball said. “So, my brother-in-law and my nephew said if I ever wrote a book with a frog in it that the frog had to be Froggie Nelsons.” For her third book, though, the “endearing” qualities of Max the Bear and Froggie Nelsons that had previously encapsulated her pages disappeared. Instead, the first page depicts a bear cast away
in the shadows, and the reader is greeted not by childhood innocence but by a woman screaming through cobwebs on the front cover. This was not a children’s book. Ball knew her book would be titled, “Screaming in Autopilot” from the beginning and said she wrote the book because “[she] wanted to be heard.” “[The title of the book] is how I feel in my life, like I’m not in control,” Ball said. “Like I’m in autopilot, like you’re screaming, like you can’t say anything. Like you don’t have any control, like somebody else is in control.” Lynn Lamb, the book’s graphic designer, interacted with Ball through social media as they were both part of the virtual writing community. Ball reached out personally to Lamb to be the designer for “Screaming in Autopilot.” “The first thing that caught my attention was that amazing title,” Lamb said, “and my brain just blew up with ideas of what I could do with that title for a cover.” The book depicts poetry and prose from Ball’s life, created over the last 20 years, and features a trigger warning for “incest, child abuse and trauma, suicide and/or death, depression
BALLSTATEDAILY.COM • 13 and alcoholism,” before some chapters. Ball was abused as a child, and it remained unreported by her family. She said some of the pieces in the book were written when she was still angry, and she wants people to see the freedom in working through anger. In one poem titled, “Letter To My Son,” she wrote that her anger kept her “living as a sibling” to her son as he grew up. “I was 30 years old — I [will] never forget,” Ball said. “I woke up one day, and I was like, ‘You know what? My parents don’t care if I’m angry at them. They don’t care. I’m not hurting them. I’m hurting me, I’m hurting Adam.’” Ball also included some humorous written pieces in “Screaming in Autopilot” because she wanted to lighten the mood of the book and not make it too sad. Skyler Petro, 2018 Ball State graduate and close friend of Ball, said humor is part of Ball’s personality. “[The book] made me cry,” Petro said. “I thought I knew her before, but when I read that, I was like, ‘There’s things that I didn’t know — she shouldn’t have had to go

through that.’ But then her sense of humor comes out, too, and you’re like, ‘Yep, this is Kris.’” Ball wants people to believe they can achieve hope and peace in their lives. She thinks the book helps people who are hurting and is relevant because she believes there may be many people who go through situations that aren’t reported, like she did. “I think [the book is] very
relatable,” Lamb said. “Many people have been through what she’s been through, and she’s very brave to put it all out there.” Despite publishing her book, Ball said she “feels like [she’s] barely dipping her toes in the pool,” and admires the bravery of the generation of students at Ball State who she serves as a dining worker on campus. “I look around, and I see the
kids and nobody’s afraid to be themselves,” Ball said. “I’m like, ‘Man, I wish I’d been that brave when I was that age.’ Like, where does it come from? Where does that bravery come from? … If I had been that brave when I was that young, imagine what I could be now.” Contact Elissa Maudlin with comments at ejmaudlin@bsu.edu or on Twitter @ejmaudlin.

SHAFER TOWER
FROG BABY
As one of Ball State’s staples lining McKinley Avenue, it’s a must to take a photo in front of Shafer Tower. Posing in your cap and gown near the tower gives your photos the perfect Ball State backdrop, showing off the main road through campus and some of Ball State’s most iconic buildings. Consider taking some photos underneath the tower, too — showing that now, as a graduate, you no longer have to worry about the Ball State myth that it brings bad luck.
Centered in University Green near Alexander M. Bracken Library, Frog Baby is one of the many popular stops on Ball State’s campus. It is one of the most common areas for students to hang out and study. Because of that, consider taking your photos with one of Ball State’s most iconic landmarks. Many students will take photos in the fountain with Frog Baby, posing up close with the statue.

The Curtain Call Emily Hunter is a senior journalism major and writes “Speak Out” for The Daily News. Her views do not necessarily reflect those of the newspaper. A word of warning to communications underclassmen: Professors will try to scare you into joining student media. From the moment you step foot in your JOUR 101 classroom, they will drill into your head that journalism is a competitive field and joining student media will give you the experience employers are looking for. They’ll quote statistics about how students involved in student media are more successful than those who aren’t — like you’re wasting your time and money if you don’t join. But if you’re anything like me, student media can become a giant looming over your college career, swallowing you in its shadow. You’re constantly battling your social anxiety, signing up for Slack channels and email chains, but never actually stepping foot in the Unified Media Lab (UML). There is truth to what they say: Student media looks fantastic on a resume and allows you to build your portfolio. But you shouldn’t join because of fear of what will happen if you don’t. You should join out of excitement for what will happen when you do. I decided to join student media at the beginning of my sophomore year because I felt like I had to. I wasn’t completely interested in writing, but other than my classes, I didn’t have any journalism experience or connections to people in my major. I wasn’t sure where to start, so I prayed for a sign. When I checked my email less than an hour later, I had a message from The Daily News in my inbox. I can confidently say that joining student media changed the trajectory of my life. I went in questioning my major and came out with a passion for journalism I didn’t even know I possessed. The Daily News allowed me to nurture my love of copy

and my urge to get involved with Byte overruled. After a full semester recording episodes of what came to be known as “Roll for Immersion,” I’m happy to say that leap was unquestionably worth it. The hours spent in the studio laughing and rolling dice quickly became one of the highlights of my semester.

I took a leap with Byte during my senior year by responding to a call-out for students interested in recording a “Dungeons & Dragons” (D&D) podcast. The growing confidence student media gave me pushed me out of my comfort zone in the best way possible. I created content I was proud of and sent my parents pictures and links of every story I wrote. No matter how many stories you publish, the excitement of seeing your work in print or online never goes away. I am also incredibly grateful
to student media for the friends it gave me, because I didn’t have many before. Whether they be fellow editors or podcast cohosts, I am truly blessed to have them in my life. In times where I was doubting myself and my abilities, they gave me the extra push I needed to be the best possible version of myself. To them, I say thank you, from the bottom of my heart. All of this is what makes it so hard to be graduating this year. It’s never too late to get involved with student media, but my one regret is that I didn’t do it sooner, especially since I am graduating in three years instead of four. My time was already limited. So, another word of warning to the underclassmen: the semesters will pass by quickly. Take advantage of the amazing opportunities you don’t even know you have. Ball State student media has left a beautiful legacy that’s rich with history and talent. I feel honored to have left my mark on it, just as it has left its mark on me. Give yourself
Significance
John Lynch
Columnist, “Fine Print” RYLAN CAPPER, DN
BALLSTATEDAILY.COM • 17
In the grand scheme of things, everything lacks significance until you provide it. John Lynch is a senior journalism major and writes “Fine Print” for The Daily News. His views do not necessarily reflect those of the newspaper. On my mother’s side of the family, we have a saying that has guided us for the last three generations: “Do it, do it best.” Coined by my greatgrandfather, that dedication to a strong work ethic has driven my family’s endeavors in our family business for 50 years. Work ethic is everything to me and my family; when I turned twelve, I received my first work permit so I could pitch in at the machine shop we run. That work ethic has served me well in the world of journalism — which is why I was so nervous when I struggled to find the right way to write my final column. Unfortunately, there are a finite number of things you can say about graduating from college. That’s the trouble with being an opinion writer and editor — not only do your ideas need to be good, they have to be new. Readers like satisfying beginnings and endings. One of the earliest tricks I try to teach my opinion writers is to end their stories where they start them. It’s a simple but incredibly effective trick, one that I think reflects a very human need for symmetry in our experiences and stories. But reality is not like our stories, much as our expectations would like to suggest otherwise. More than anything else, we want our actions to have significance, no matter how small, and, in truth, writing for a college newspaper feels
small. However, in relative terms, so does everything else. But isn’t that lonely? Loneliness is a feeling that came to dominate my college life, creeping its way into my mind through every tool at its disposal. COVID-19, anxiety and living in a new state for college made making connections difficult, but working at The Daily News patched those holes for me. There isn’t a professor or class in this university that has taught or given me half as much as The Daily News has, and if you’re a journalism
watch your old friends move on to more interesting places and parts of their lives. But, if anything, we give ourselves the gifts of significance in everything we do — college paper included. The Daily News has given my college life a feeling of significance. It’s given me experience, tools for my career and plenty of stories beyond the ones I’ve shared on the page. During my time at Ball State, I’ve written more than 80 stories for the paper, from my earliest article on David

However, in relative terms, so does everything else. But isn’t that lonely?” student, get the actual value out of Ball State’s Department of Journalism by joining a student media organization. It’s a small start, but one you should value and hold tightly to, nonetheless. Yes, it can feel small, biding your time and working for a paper like The Daily News, even in its 100th year of operation. It can feel small completing years of your college education from the confines of your bedroom or living room, even if you pass the classes. It can feel small living in Muncie, Indiana, while you
Letterman from before I even started college to this farewell column you’re reading now. I’m known to be a person who says “yes” to most things, and I think that’s evident in the way my storytelling abilities have improved and impacted the community around me. It hasn’t always been easy — I’ve had my share of setbacks and downright nasty comments on my columns and articles — but overcoming those struggles has only made me more driven to improve and prove myself. That feeling was tremendously important to
me during the worst of the pandemic in particular. I could be dying of social isolation and drowning in self-pity over the college experience that was being taken from me by things beyond my control, but there The Daily News would be with another story for me to cover or deadline to meet. More than anything, though, The Daily News has given me a sense of place. I wouldn’t be the journalist or person I am without the people around me who shaped me. My social circle may have shrunk, but my colleagues and family at The Daily News were always there for me, whether we were face-toface or miles apart. Success, value, the love between friends and coworkers — these are gifts we don’t know the value of until they’re gone. To a certain point, that will be missing from my life once my time at The Daily News is over in just a few short weeks. But I know I won’t ever really be alone again, thanks to the family I’ve found here. You’re not alone, and neither is your voice. It just needs the right people to lift it up, the way The Daily News has lifted mine. Thank you to my amazing fellow editors, my wonderful opinion writers and everyone in my life who said I could do it if I just pushed a little harder. Thank you, the reader, for reading. Thank you for making me feel significant, when nothing else did. I hope my best was enough. Contact John Lynch with comments at jplynch@ bsu.edu or on Twitter @ WritesLynch.

My Daily News fairytale ended happily ever after because I found my confidence again.

before I sat in my bright red plastic chair, lowered it as close to the ground as possible and powered up my desktop in the Art and Journalism Building’s Unified Media Lab to print my first edition of The Daily News as editor-in-chief, a former editor-inchief and the big sister I never had told me sitting in that chair would get lonely. It’s not necessarily that I didn’t believe her, but at first, I couldn’t possibly see how I could feel lonely in a room I considered my second home, surrounded by people who had become my best friends over the past four years. I knew the job wouldn’t be easy, but I had my chosen family behind me, and they were all I needed. I was three months into the job when I felt it for the first time. The more stories I edited and pages I sent to the printer, the lonelier I began to feel, and I couldn’t figure out why. An editorial board of more than 20 friends and coworkers gathered in the conference room every Monday and Thursday night to plan the week’s paper as a team, and I spent nearly 12 hours every Wednesday dodging Nerf footballs and hitting 10,000 steps running around to help everyone who needed me. The first three months were a nonstop adrenaline rush. Every hour I had went to The Daily News, and if I didn’t have any left, I pulled the time from somewhere else. My experience as a student journalist taught me the newsroom is a second home for a lot of people, and when you spend that much time together, you become a family in the best and worst of ways. I was never alone, but when the only company I had was Slackbot letting me know I had another problem to solve and yet another friend to disappoint at 2 a.m., the following four
hours of my night that I spent overthinking were some of the loneliest I have ever felt. Those nights are partially on me, because despite the support system I had behind me in former editors, professors and an adviser who always had my back, the biggest challenge I faced was in supporting myself, and that’s entirely natural for a college student still trying to figure out who she is. I’m pushing my bright red chair in for the last time days after writing this piece — my final goodbye to The Daily News. After publishing more than two dozen editions from the same seat my “big sister” sat in two years before me, I finally understand what she meant when she warned me I would feel by myself sitting there, too. I also realize it’s because I had the opportunity to sit in her seat that I can say I do understand, so how can I expect anyone who hasn’t done the same to understand the position I am in now? There is nothing I wouldn’t do for a single person on the editorial board, and I did all I could to prove that for longer than I’d like to admit. I turned a job I dreamt of performing as a freshman news reporter into an endless chain of lose-lose situations. I no longer just felt alone. I felt like a failure, too, and while those who did support me constantly reminded me I was succeeding, I have never been the type to see the glass half-full. When my lock screen went days without a single text notification and I knew a decision I made turned friends into enemies for the time being, I turned to a handful of emails from another former editor-in-chief I’ve collected in my inbox since late last August. Compiled, they’re long enough for me to turn into a little book. While I appreciate every little critique and note the sender of these emails
took the time to include, the fact they took any time at all to remind me they had my back mattered to me most, and I felt less and less alone every time I got to star a new email to keep forever. I didn’t hold onto those emails because I had no one else to talk to, but because I felt there were only so few people who understood what I was going through and believed in my ability to come out on top, and sometimes, all I needed was a reminder that someone else just like me came out on top, too. Communication between both of those friends and I hasn’t been consistent, but it’s because of our one common newsroom experience as editor-in-chief that it doesn’t have to be. No matter when I reach out, they are always there. It’s because of their willingness to share their experiences as editor-in-chief with me, and the support of a handful of others along the way, that I not only made it through my time in the role, but am ending it as confident as I have ever been in who I am as an editor, a writer and a person. The freshman news reporter I was in 2018 felt blood rush to her cheeks every time one of her editors complimented her stories, not out of humble embarrassment, but rather an overwhelming fear of stepping on the toes of those around me. The sophomore lifestyles reporter I was in 2019 didn’t expect to become managing editor instead of lifestyles editor either, but just because no one expected it doesn’t mean she didn’t deserve it. And she definitely didn’t need to hear that she didn’t deserve it for another two years after getting the job and proving that, actually, maybe she did. I am happy to say I no longer feel the need to prove myself to those who don’t believe in me because I have learned to care more about the incredible
people who do, but I carried those discouraging conversations in my already too-heavy tote bag in and out of the newsroom with me for two years before I decided to replace the weight of their words with advice I had from two former editors: “It doesn’t matter if anyone else believes in you as long as you believe in yourself.” The bright red chair sitting at the first desk in my pod of computers haunted me at the end of every print night as I turned to leave the Unified Media Lab — forever representing the more capable, confident people who wouldn’t doubt every decision they made, only to inevitably spiral into a state of overthinking in which even I convinced myself I didn’t work hard enough to earn the opportunities I’ve received. Now, when I push in my chair’s bright high-back at the end of the night, I know I earned it all. The Daily News may have taught me almost everything I know about journalism and writing and editing. It may have helped me figure out what I want to do for the rest of my life, and it became my purpose all throughout my college career. But the most important thing The Daily News did for me was help me find my self-worth, and after 22 years of endless doubt in myself, there is simply no possible way for me to express how thankful I am for everyone and everything that helped me find my confidence again — through passion, paper and the long-overdue acceptance that not everyone will always believe in me and what I do. What matters most is that I believe in myself. After years of believing I didn’t deserve to lead this paper, I am proud to say my story has a happily ever after, because now, I finally believe I deserved it all along. The pandemic has unfortunately become so ingrained into everyone’s experiences that I think a lot of us would rather not think about how life could have gone without it.” affected by the pandemic. When I talk to my parents and their friends, they often tell me how they wish I had the opportunity for a better experience, but the reality is I have no idea what a better college experience would have looked like. The pandemic has affected the entire globe, and the virus itself has killed more than 6 million people worldwide. I’m lucky enough to not have personally known anyone who died from COVID-19, so I have no objection to sacrificing parts of my college experience when so many people have it a lot worse. Throughout these past three years, I have always had the option of throwing pity parties for myself and focusing on what I’ve missed or lost. I sometimes think about how my life would have been different without COVID-19, but I can never form a clear picture in my head. I would have gone to Washington, D.C. in spring 2020, to Mexico City in spring 2022 and have had the opportunity to attend in-person award ceremonies for the Department of Journalism. Would those additional experiences have made my life better? I don’t know. The pandemic has unfortunately become so ingrained into everyone’s experiences that I think a lot of us would rather not think about how life could have gone without it. If not for COVID-19, I probably could have developed closer relationships with my coworkers if we had been able to safely gather and travel outside of the Unified Media Lab. I can choose to remember how I lost that when I leave The Daily News in May, or I can remember how the editorial board still had a team spirit when I first became a news editor in fall 2020. Beyond the pandemic, I can
choose to resent my professors for assigning time-consuming homework or resent myself for taking 18 credit hours each semester, but I don’t want to spend time wallowing in negative emotions. I know I have immense privilege to be able to do this at all, but I’ve chosen to remember the highlights and good things that happened in college in spite of the pandemic. I have experienced this hopefully once-in-alifetime event with my friends and family, and we’ve relied on virtual communication to get through it together. Obviously, I can’t just wash away the bad memories from college, but I can be intentional in which experiences I document in photos, notes and friendships.
I have my whole life ahead of me to reflect more on my college experience, and I’m sure I’ll wonder how I accomplished everything I did during the pandemic. I’m sure no one wishes they entered, experienced or graduated college amid a pandemic, but it’s a reality we all have to deal with. In most cases, I find I can still be grateful for something, even during hardship. Choosing gratitude amid challenging times might not be easy for everyone, but I would encourage you to do the same, no matter the unexpected circumstances life throws at you next. Grace McCormick is a senior journalism news major and writes “Mother of Muses” for The Daily News. Her views do not necessarily reflect those of the newspaper. As I sat in front of 15 of my close friends in a dimly lit hotel room, I was sure I would cry. I had been thinking about what to say to these people, a group who have made every interaction I have with them fantastic, a group of friends who I will no longer see multiple times a week after I graduate. But instead of feeling sad to leave, I felt energized and happy for all the memories and friendships we’ve cemented. Instead of crying while speaking to them, I laughed and expressed my appreciation for everyone’s dedication and love. This was two nights before my friends and I competed at the 2022 National Forensics Association (NFA) tournament. Ball State’s speech team placed in the top 10 teams in the nation and advanced multiple speeches to phases of the final elimination rounds. I can’t express in words right now how proud I am of my teammates for their spirit. Speech is the only activity in my college career that I’ve felt consistently welcomed, appreciated and celebrated, so saying goodbye to it was hard. On the van ride back to Muncie, I remembered the 2020-21 school year of completely virtual speech tournaments and how difficult it was to only see my friends in profile picture boxes on Zoom. Having an in-person tournament to cap off my speech career while the COVID-19 pandemic continues was far from normal, but it seemed like a metaphor for my entire college experience. Each of the three years I’ve been at Ball State have been
